I love Steinhart. A great value and they have beautiful styles. If somehow I could grow my wrist, I would be wearing this one right now. But at 44mm and 16mm thick, it would look pretty goofy on my small arm.

GORGEOUS STEINHART!!!! I have been eyeballing these hard lately. Pretty damned good value for what you get.

Is it an automatic? Looks like a classic pilots watch with a onion crown, kind of like a Big Pilot chrono. 47 mm is huge!

Like IWC's Big Pilot Chrono, the Steinhart Nav B-Chrono is based on the B-UHREN watches (http://www.calibremagazine.com/node/305) that 5 companies, including IWC, produced for Luffwaffe bomber pilots and navigators before and during WWII. Steinhart also makes a line of pure pilot watches that much more closely resemble the B-Uhren's. The diamond crown on the watch I ordered is actually historically accurate, the onion/pumpkin crown is a more uniform/round shape and is a modern addition to the pilot watch.

All of Steinhart watches (http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/) are mechanical, some manual wind and some automatic. The one I've ordered is a mech auto chrono using the Valjoux 7750 movement. 47mm is on the larger side depending on your wrist size, but it's the 16.7mm height that's the large dimension on this watch. I have a 19.5cm wrist and find that anything under about 42mm looks lost on my arm. While obviously not my arm, this person is wearing the 47mm on a slightly smaller 19cm wrist:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f275/399002d1299350202-seeking-thoughts-steinhart-nav-b-chrono-47mm-dsc_1773_resized.jpg

Depending on how this purchase goes, and I have no doubts that the watch quality will be just as good as the watch forums say it is, I've got a feeling I'll be ordering this marine chronometer inspired manual wind as a dress watch. Hard to go wrong for 383Euro shipped.

47mm is large, no matter how you cut it, but it's whether it looks foolish or not is the question. You have the wrist to carry it off. It would look out of place on me.

Looking at their site, I can't figure out where they are manufactured. It says Switzerland, but I can't find the factory address beyond just Jura. That's a well priced watch considering the movement alone may cost them $150-200 unfinished.

mithrilG60
08-16-2012, 11:29 AM
Ya I'm not sure where exactly in Jura their factory is. They're also a small company so I would expect they contract to factory(s) which makes the pieces per design spec then ship them back to the small workshop in Augsburg, DE where Steinhart is based out of for final customizing/finishing and shipping.

Although growing quickly, Steinhart is still definitely a cult/boutique brand that doesn't have the presence or size that many of the other well established brands do. That comes with some perks though as the owner has also collaborated on several occasions with various watch enthusiast forums to create customized special editions for their members.

Just ordered one of these this morning; Steinhart Nav B-Chrono 47mm on brown leather strap with polished Pre-V as were as a second black leather strap with polished Pre-V. Now the waiting begins.... I have a feeling this will feel similar to when I ordered my Aristocrat from Bob.

Nice watch

I've been eyeing up a Laco recently

Laco makes some beautiful pilots too, closer to historically accurate than the Steinharts as well. I looked at Laco's but just couldn't justify spending 1600€ on a watch right now. You do get what you pay for and the Laco's are better quality again, but it is what it is. As it stands my Steinhart will cost almost the same as my Aristocrat did last year. Thank god my wife doesn't blink at these things... her exact comment was "Would you stop obsessing and just order the damn watch already!!". The one thing she did have me change was to requested the satin/brushed finish buckles instead of the polished :r

Hoping to get a FedEx number on Monday and if all goes well I should have it sometime mid to late next week :noon

Shane everything on shop NBC is on flex pay so you're looking at $40 a month x 6 months. Just saying

That 3 watch set's a good deal but I'd only wear one cuz i dont like the gold or rose gold color so that'd be a waste

It's promised to my son when he graduates next May, so I don't wear it much anymore. I'm looking for a diver style watch with an orange face. I've been looking at the Seiko Orange Monster. I buy and wear wristwatches for fun and not investing. I do invest in old pocketwatches, especially when I can save one from the gold melters. Here is a 120 year old 18s Waltham in 14k that was destined to be melted down for the gold. I couldn't let that happen to this beautiful case. It's so fine that I think it spent most of it's life stored away in a sock drawer. You just don't see them in this condition anymore. The cost to recreate a case like this today would be outrageous and I just can't believe that anybody would be willing to destroy this piece of history for greenbacks. That's me though, I'm different.:)

Well there are a few marques if you buy them right, you won't lose money I should've said. Replacement cost are higher than when originally bought. Heck, I can sell my IWC used for more than I paid for it 15 years ago...

It'll be interesting to see how the market goes with Eta remaining exclusvie to Swatch group brands. Several marques have been scrambling to find replacements that'll be a direct fit. Tooling for a new case, and movement parts are $$$.

I think I agree with dont buy a watch as an investment. While I cant afford a $10k fashion statement (yet), there are many things that appreciate faster than watches or even Gold. Ferrari's come quickly to mind the used ones often sell for double what they were new 2 years ago.

Which one's would those be? Considering ownership costs including insurance, salex tas and yearly excise tax... Maybe only the top of the range models could be true, and it's certainly not double.

This is based on what I read and was told by a former astronaut David Wolf and a former CEO for Conseco. In 2008 they both got on the new car waiting list. They did not share which models they were waiting for only that the new car price with applicable taxes and fees would be around $110K each and that resale on the cars were around $180K to $210K. A quick search for current prices shows a less positive move but the 458 italia 2010 model retail new $225k and used resale $264k. Excise tax is state dependent since not all states have excise tax on licensing auto's. Sales tax I am sure they did not include. However since that is a constant and based again on the state you live or register the car in can range from 0% to 10% or even more it would be very difficult to factor in.

Sorry misquoted the new car price for the 458 Italia. Invoice price was actually $191K current MSRP is $225K and current used retail actual price $264K still not quite what I was told several years ago but also not bad.

The other problem, even if one were to have 200K handy, it's not so easy to just buy a new Ferrari at the dealer. Their market cap allows them to be choosy who gets to buy new cars and how long the minimum ownership can be. If everyone just bought a new Ferrari and flipped it, the dealer would just increase the price.

If you want to hold something for several years, Cristal and Dom Perignon always increase in value and everyone can buy at it the same price when current at Costco, etc... See how much a 20 year old DP goes for compared to a current offering!

Very few US Ferrari dealerships have new Ferrari's and it still allows them to be very picky with their clientele. Typically a prospective buyer would need to contact Ferrari sales directly through the manufacturer and decide to apply for the wait list and if it will be a dealer pickup or a factory pickup. The few Ferrari owners I have been able to converse with have stated that typically the factory encourages them to remain on the new car wait list even after purchase and to trade in the approximately 2 year old car. Typically this results in the owner being paid for their used car between 8 and 50% more than original sticker price. Dom or Cristal both are also subject to the year to determine the price both new and aged. This is determined by the acidity of the grape based on the rainfall and relative humidity fluctuations in the region. Too much moisture can cause the grape to be too sweet making the flavor flat too little can make the grape too tart making the wine too sharp or dry. Or maybe I have those backwards.

Big watch. It has the main goodies you want in a watch. I wonder how long ago it was made? I thought ETA stopped supplying non Swatch brands. It could be that many manufacturers have good stock on movements still.

ETA stopped supplying unfinished movements to non-Swatch Group companies, they still sell completed movements. "3rd party" companies like Steinhart still buy and use them, it just means more work if they want to put out special editions with highly decorated and/or unique metal finishes in the movements as the movement has to be disassembled and refinished.

Ouch. What's are issues with it?

Oil dried up and seized the movement I think, probably due to the case not being properly sealed after the last battery change (done at the same place) but I'm sure there's no way I can prove it to where they'll make it right.

mosesbotbol
02-27-2013, 08:45 AM
Dried up oils does not mean a ruined movement unless sprockets have chewed teeth or something like that. They'd have to most likely disassemble the movement, parts wash it and reassemble.

If you don't mind me asking, how much is the watch worth in LNIB condition? How much was their quote? Was it Tag or an indy watch repair that gave you the quote?

MurphysLaw

The lady on the phone wasn't exactly sure and I was in shock at $695 for the repair. I think the watch MSRP'd somewhere near $1100 but I bought it at a authorized retailers liquidation at a deep discount. I took it to another authorized retailer who sent it out for the service, so I'm not sure if it went to Tag or not.

mosesbotbol
02-27-2013, 08:58 AM
For a quartz service, that sound really steep. I'd write to Tag corporate and tell them the whole story. Their authorized service did not service the watch correctly and because of their failure, your watch is in this state.

What do you want do of this? Would you spring for another watch at a big discount, or just want this one fixed? Do you have receipts for the battery change?

MurphysLaw
02-27-2013, 12:28 PM
I'll send them a letter and see if it gets me anywhere. I probably have the receipts stored somewhere, honestly I just want my watch fixed, but if that's not possible I'd probably spring for a replacement if the price was right. I'm going to try another authorized retailer/repair outfit too, they did a great job on my wife's Rolex after she dropped it, and charged a very fair price.

Last resort is to see what kind of "trade in value" you watch as is has on another watch. Hardly ideal, but have to consider all avenues available to you.

I have a Technomarine that is not working; ETA quartz. Brought it Switzerland and had a master horologist work on it. As soon as I got back, broke again... Frustrating because an nickel more in expense and it's not worth it to me.

What's the story with that watch? Is it an auto or quartz? Has classic styling and not too big. Nice.

It's from the Seiko "Premier" line, they are kinetic direct drive watches. Meaning they use a combination of quartz and automatic movements. The complication on the left is the power reserve, and I can definatly feel the winder moving when I move the watch, even more so than my Breitling SO, so it is driven from movement, but power from the movement is feed into a quart movement. The second hand 'ticks' like a quartz, it doesn't sweep like a good auto. I am rambling a bit due to not yet knowing a lot about this movement. It has an incredibly high quality leather band and clasp. The only other watch I have with a leather band is a Lum-Tec and I switch bands regularly, and this one feels better. It also has a Sapphire crystal, which is a must for me.

So far I like it even thought it is a lot dressy-er than any other watch I own, which I think was my wife's intention...

My Laco is 42mm and with my little wrists I wouldn't want to go much larger than that.

Stopped at the jeweler Monday to pick up my Tag, told them how upset I was and that I'd be taking my business elsewhere. They made a couple calls and were able to track down the last service on it they had done. After talking it over, they are going to send it directly to Tag, and are going to eat some of the repair costs. The movement wasn't completely seized as I was able to move the hands using the crown, but I couldn't check the chronos since the battery was still dead. Hoping for a much better estimate this time around...

I didn't know where else to post this except here. Anyone ever got a rash from their watch? I got my Invicta this past Christmas, and like all my jewelry I do not take it off (for showers or sleep or anything). Well for the past 2 weeks I have broken out in a rash. I have put some hydrocortisone cream on it, but it doesn't seem to be going away. It doesn't itch, it's just gross to look at lol.

Any suggestions to get rid of the rash or a remedy to not have this happen again, I love my watch and I want to wear it. I spoke to a coworker and a doctor at the shop (gyno not dermatologist) who both said to try clear nailpolish, I did a google search and have heard clear glue and tape as well. Is there a band or something I could put on my wrist instead of doing this or what do you think about this?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

mithrilG60
04-19-2013, 07:37 AM
How tight are you wearing the watch? This sounds to me either like a reaction to a metal used in the band/case back or your skin reacting to extended pressure and a lack of breathability under the strap. If it's either of those simple hydro-cortisone (or similar) steroid creme and leaving the watch off for a few days should clear it right up. If it's the breathablity issue than just take your watch off at night and that should prevent it from recurring. If not get a referral to a dermatologist and consult an expert ;)

No, I leave my watch loose, I like it to move for the very reason my other watches I have had were too tight and the sun couldn't get to my skin and it would cause a white irritation and flakiness, am I just doomed not to be able to wear a watch? I am thinking I am having an allergic reaction to the nickel to the steel as I have been reading. I haven't had the watch on for 2 weeks now, I even switched wrists to see if I was allergic to the nickel or not and the stems stabbed my hand, so had to ditch that idea.

mithrilG60
04-19-2013, 08:42 AM
A nickel reaction is what I was thinking too. Could also be cobalt as that's another binding agent that some people have sensitivities to. Why not switch to a different strap, leather or nylon, and see if that helps?

Let me throw this out to you. Do you wear sunglasses? Imagine how dirty they'd be if you wore them to bed and in the shower. Keeping your watch clean will prevent residues from building up and giving you a rash. Think about what happens to your shower if you don't clean it for months. It gets soap scum build up and bacteria. :2

This is my Bernhardt Officer's Watch, made as a limited edition for the Badger & Blade forums. It has a Swiss Unitas movement, and Swiss components, but assembled in the USA. Once I've got some more play money I'd like to get one of Bernhardt's Binnacle Anchor watches.

I am loving this watch but I keep forgetting to wind it up. Not used to a hand wind.

Here is a new band, I tried to distress it but when I waxed the leather it covered up most of the patina. You can see the forced wear on the last picture the best:
