What did you decide? Inquiring minds want to know!

Traded, shipping on Monday, also bought a Strapcode super engineer II bracelet to go with it along with the stock oyster.

Will look like this on bracelet.

Nice, a few years back, I went from watch collecting to every few years getting a really nice piece.

The Omega will carry me over until I can get a Luminor, or a Navitimer.

I really like those Seiko's, Mike, the bracelet and the recessed hex screws make the watch look like a tank! And if I'm not mistaken those are titanium too which is cool, very cool.

Remo
03-01-2015, 02:15 PM
Ya, that one is Titanium, great look and size. My orient will tide me over for awhile :tu

mosesbotbol
03-02-2015, 12:34 PM
I like Titanium watches, but they can scratch a little easier. Omega has 3-4 different Titanium color blends. Saw an awesome Titanium Planet Ocean on bracelet at one of the Omega boutiques. They are quite rare; not as many are buying Titanium watches like they did in the 90's.

Does Rolex make a Titanium watch? Not that they need it as most are already quite light by design.

RWhisenand
03-02-2015, 08:07 PM
I've seen a few of the titanium Omegas in pictures only, I have a Seiko titanium Quartz watch my wife bought for me some years ago, it's color is really an eye catcher, I use it when I play golf (isn't much anymore) because I hardly feel it there!

That spring drive movement is supposed to be extremely accurate, one of the best automatic movements out there, don't have one yet but I certainly gave a hard look at some of Seiko's Ananta line before pulling the trigger on the Omega.

Good luck on the search for that Grail Mike!

I keep checking on delivery, still a few days out...

A lot of stores in Singapore are selling the Grand Seiko and they are nice looking. Not that expensive when compared to similarly sought after Swiss watches. The styles are pretty conservative so you'd get a lot of life from the watch and be played out a decade later.

Are the two off center links (on your Omega) multiple pieces or is it one piece that is contoured? Is the left "button" an escape valve or something else?

RWhisenand
03-07-2015, 07:01 AM
The button on the left of the face is an escape valve with a date wheel corrector integrated into it. The off centered links appear to be one piece with a machined contour.

I'm looking for a pocket watch that I can tweak.
I'd like it to be faceless, transparent on both sides to view the clockwork, and cheap (but reasonably durable.
Ideally it wouldn't have any face, but I'll likely have to pull the hands and remove the face. That's fine.
I may also engrave the bigger gears.
It's just a fun project I want to knock out for myself.

Both covers will be cut out, inlaid, and 3d.
Once I've done an inexpensive pocket watch I may do another more expensive one?

Any suggestions?
Links?
I found some on Amazon but figured you guys would know what's best for my money.
I'm thinking around 50 bucks?
Help me with the price, too, if you will.

Nice. That is a model that will last you a long time. The Bentley Breitling (and the like) are not going to be the style for long.

High end brands are scaling down the diameter just as fashion houses are toning down logos on their bags, etc... Asian market, especially Chinese are preferring the more conservative styling and they are the driver's seat for both trends. Just as well; I don't want a pocket watch on my wrist.

If you ever get to Grenchen Switzerland, the Breitling plant is really cool looking.

If you can set up auto bill pay to complete the payments before the interest comes, you won't notice the bill.

I don't foresee a new watch for me this year. Buying a 2nd home right now and want to save for a sedan in the semi-near future. That could change when I am back in Singapore this fall... Watch fever sets in and any responsible decision takes a back seat. There's a couple of particular watches on my hot list, but I can't say I have really "earned" them yet.

There's a cool Breitling boutique in Singapore; 1 of 2 in SE Asia.

My most recent experience with Torneau (T) came when I bought my wife a watch last Christmas. The watch she wanted at T was retail. They were unwilling to negotiate. We went to another shop with better stock and bought it for 20% off MSRP. Same warranty, plus I'm set to negotiate for our next one. I paid with a cc and got the miles to boot. So, to me, buying a watch at T for MSRP is not worth it. JMO in LA.

I thought they doubled the manufacturer warranty? I've only bought one pre-owned watch (from Torneau) they did 2 year warranty where ever other pre-owned place did one year. They also included insurance on the watch and I had it totally re-finished the watch after I bought it. Took like 3 months, but came back like a new watch.

A the older style Sub's had those hollow links, the watch felt light, and the band would stretch. I'd rather have a Titanium watch if I want light instead of hollow links.

Rolex has stepped up their game over the last decade in terms of delivering what the consumer wants.

Which is your other?

I am thinking of picking up a Ball the next time I am in Singapore in a couple of months. I saw one model that had a similar mesh style bracelet like the Brietling Super Ocean for around $1200 that seemed like quite a bargain. I just looked on their site and did not see a watch with that bracelet. I found in general that some watches, the dealers have more options than what is shown on the site. Especially for Rolex; there's too many variants for them to post all the combo's online.

Ball does a great job on the finishing. Seems like Middle East & Asia are their main markets. In Singapore, tons stores sell them; then again Singapore is the watch capital of the world by a long shot.

Typically, the mid level kind of stores where Breitling, Ball, TAG would be their highline brands. I couldn't find a quick picture of the Ball mesh bracelet, but it's exactly like the Breitling which is super comfortable and en vogue right now.

Being that my last name is Ball, I have a little collection of them... here's a repost of a pic earlier in this thread:

and my vintage Ball:

I like that vintage a lot. I wanted an Omega Aqua Terra but it was a bit too expensive. The red label looks very similar to an aqua terra and at a fifth of the price of an omega, I couldn't resist.

Any pictures of the movement?

Big thing on old watches is the dial which looks good on your family heirloom. As long as the dial is good, the rest can be fixed or serviced.

There is a small crack in between the 3 and the 4 on the dial. I had it serviced and new crystal installed, and the thing is running like a tank now. It is my everyday carry watch. I have tried wrist watches many times, have a number of them scattered throughout the house gathering dust, but just don't like them on my wrist. This watch is perfect for me.

Thank you very much. My great grandfather was a railroad conductor, and it was his that was issued to him by the railroad. My understanding is he was not allowed to set the time on his watch, only the railroad could, and they fined him if he let his watch wind down.

I just purchased a Hamilton Pilot Automatic with the black face - wanted to save the $18 shipping so I won't get it 'till next week - pretty much a bargain on Jomashop with $10 off with their promo - similar style as the IWC Pilot (not near as nice) and $600 vs $6000 - retro leather band that I might replace. This makes watch number 23

Are Shinola watches any good/collectible. Worried it's just hype - I know nothing about watches.

Wife's family is nuts - she bought a Shinola Arganite 705 w/ 20 mm bracelet for her brother as a peace offering for Christmas. Huge fight last month and I now have it. She can't return it now, but I don't wear watches.

Shinola's been around only a few years - I don't own one but like the styles - I did notice Costco in California just started carrying them in the last month or so - that speaks to Shinola's ability to handle both volume and returns - doubt it'll be collectible - if you have to, there's always ebay - turn the watch into cigars!

Sorry about the family feud - life is way to short - maybe a vintage cigar with your brother in law - Good luck! -(P

Are Shinola watches any good/collectible

I owned one and then sold it a year later. Got it on a Disney cruise two years ago. I really knew nothing about watches.....still don't really, but I know what I like and what I don't like more than I did when I bought that watch.

It was a bit big for my liking and honestly, today, I could never see paying that kind of money for a quartz watch. I prefer my Orient all black Mako a lot more, and for a fraction of the price......just something about knowing it doesn't have a battery in it....old school.

I'd say treat it like anything. If you like it and you like wearing it....then keep it....if you don't and its just going to sit in a drawer....sell it.

On another note, I purchased, about 6 months ago off eBay, a seiko pepsi diver from 1977 (my birth year). Seller sells quite a few refurb seiko's there and said what he had done, but like anything, he does it as a side job/hobby and can't guarantee....plus he's in Australia.

Anyways, if I take it off for any longer than about 9-10 hours, it will stop.....I also have noticed a few times in the last 6 months, that after a day where I may not have worn it much, it may be ticking when I put it on, but may stop later that morning....like it just isn't winding as much.

Any place you can suggest I send it in for a complete service/repair? I found a local guy who has a great reputation, but he does it out of his house and everything is by appointment only. I'm kinda afraid I'll be in the same boat if something happens a year from now.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I have the "Colonel Pogue" Seiko 6139 chronograph. My Dad bought it on R&R in Hong Kong when he was in Vietnam.

http://blog.dreamchrono.com/2013/11/seiko-6139-pogue/

I cannot keep that thing from running slow, the date/time Windows being off, the stop watch not resetting, etc etc. I am not going to spend any more money trying to get it repaired. I just wear it as a bracelet sometimes. I love the look of it but it just is not reliable.

Moses, I am very pleased with my Steinhart. If you Google Steinhart Ocean 1 you will see many rave reviews of the watch. I think the fit and finish are excellent. It is Swiss made with a well regarded Swiss movement. The watch is rated water resistant to 1000 feet, and the bracelet is well made and heavy. The crystal is domed sapphire. If I had to name one improvement to make, the lume could be brighter. I bought directly from Steinhart - I ordered on a Monday and received the watch that Friday. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased.

Here's my new watch; Steinhart Ocean One in Titanium. Great watch for the money. Detailing is solid, well made. ETA movement, sapphire crystal, screw down crown, etc... 42mm and doesn't look big, so has a classic non-trendy look. Screw in links and ceramic bezel. Hard pressed to find a new Swiss automatic that has as much for the same money. Bought factory direct. This our 2nd Steinhart watch.

My other watches are all being serviced right now, so I was out of watch and wanted a Titanium dive watch is getting harder find. Planet Ocean Omega is like the only other one of note from I can see (albeit a lot more money).

Google also provided quite a few with the keywords "watch winder pillow" and "watch pillow"

http://www.swisstgallery.com/heiden-watch-winder-pillow-wide-black.html

http://www.buywatchwinders.com/watch-winder-accessories-c-9.html

The square pillow design is not a bad one. I know it's not what you want, but it may be cheaper and it would provide a slimmer profile. I don't think it would cost much at all do have done by someone who makes cornhole bags or the like.

I got the Wolf 456002 Watch Winder from Amazon about a year ago, and it's been great so far. Super quiet and looks very stylish. It's a bit on the pricier side but totally worth it. Here's the Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/WOLF-456002-Viceroy-Single-Winder/dp/B002S0NM3C)link and a good review (https://thewatchsnob.com/watch-winder-reviews/)for people who wants more info.

I just have a Apple Watch but my mom and grandma both have Rolex’s. My uncle has about 10 in a safe that he never wears. My mom has a Tag too but never really wore it after my dad got her the Rolex for their 10th wedding anniversary in like 2004.

These are my two latest. Seems I just discovered Orient watches and I love them; 21,600 bps, hacking and hand winding in-house movements. Sorry I haven't had the chance to photograph my actual pieces. I think I got the last Maestro available online. You can't tell from the pictures but the hands and markers are a deep cobalt blue. I took the bracelet off of it and put on a vintage style coffee brown leather strap. Actual photos to come.

How are you enjoying the MontBlanc, Julian? I've had one of their XXL GMT Chronos for a around 15 years now and always liked it.

And good call on the Orient, Darren. For the money, they are hard to beat. I've been wearing one of theirs with a blue dial as my pool/vacation watch for a few years. It's by far the best value watch I own and I've recommended them to a lot of folks.

Not sure who makes the MontBlanc, but as a part of Richemont, there are plenty of good shops who can produce a nice watch.

Does MontBlanc have a dedicated manufacture for watches or just a run from one of their other factories?

I was just reading that it's an in-house movement; pretty impressive. Here's a link: https://www.watch-wiki.net/index.php?title=MB_R200

Didn’t get it... couldn’t find it locally and have been too busy to travel to see it. While I love the unique face layout I started to think I might prefer something more classic. I was also reading mixed opinions about the quality of Montblanc. Another strong contender was this: https://www.glashuette-original.com/collection/pano/panomaticlunar/1-90-02-42-32-05 ... Thanks James, I've come to love them. Since then I've gotten a Hemel Track with the bead blasted case and a pretty decent Miyota movement:

Oops, ROFL at how useless the tiny picture is - just looked on a full monitor for the first time.
Doesn't show the guilloche or tourbillon very well but google for "pro" photos (it's different than the previous big picture I embedded).

Anyone know if a tourbillon tends to be noisier than other movements?

Ok, that is a different watch then his. His is not Tourbillon. I'd think you'd hear/feel some more noise & movement considering the additional parts turning.

Have you looked at used pilot style watches on watch forums? You should be able to buy a cool automatic like the Seiko for under 1K. Plenty of manufacturers make similar watches and some time. Just a thought as the Breitling is up there in price.

One Breitling I'd recommend as soon as you can find one is a Quartz Navitimer. Has the look, just hair smaller and it's a Quartz. Always ready. Great price too, but are rising in value.

Well, it’s not quite right watch- you can tell by the face layout but also to the sides of the crown. I’m nearly certain it’s actually this watch:
https://www.tourneau.com/watches/pre-owned-breguet/marine-dual-time-stainless-steel-automatic-5857st-12-sz0-VBR00623.html

I emailed both authors but got no response. Maybe just sloppy, but it seems so obvious I have to wonder if it’s just a more sensational story at the higher price...

Sadly, no but I kinda like the brown leather strap, which is really nice quality. I'm also looking at a dark brown rally strap. I just haven't decided between large holes or small. Problem is the 23mm lug width.

Hirsch is a popular brand for straps. Is it a deployment buckle? Some of the rubber straps are really fantastic and comfortable.

I believe Alpina a brand manufactured by Frederique Constant, right?

I checked out Hirsch but they don't have much in 23mm. I bookmarked them for future reference.

It's a pin buckle, but a nice one. It's reminds me of the buckle on a garrison belt; kind of an over-under arrangement. I usually replace pin buckles with deployment clasps or butterflies but I like this one.

I've read that FC acquired Alpina in 2002 but I don't know if they are made by them or if manufacture is separate. At any rate, the Alpina is currently keeping to about +1 s/d and the fit and finish is beautiful. I got an insanely good deal on it; only $820 (MSRP $2795) as a "Factory Recondition" but it came in the usual high end box with papers, etc. I don't think it was "reconditioned" per se, but I saw a review that showed the subdial hands on the wrong dials; the red hand on the running seconds instead of the 30 min. counter. What I suspect happened was that the factory accidentally installed them wrong and then had their authorized service centers swap them when retailers noticed it. I bought it from one of these centers on eBay (they have more). I never would have been able to afford it otherwise. What I like about it is the 70's style cushion case and that it's a mono-pusher; which is kind of unusual and hard to f*** up.

It doesn't say if it is a mens watch or womens, but even if it is a woman's watch, I would still wear it if it wasn't too small, and someone bought it for me. No prices are listed anywhere, but I'm pretty sure it is a case of if you have to ask, you can't afford it. I also am not sure I want to know.
