I've got a Breitling Navitimer and my grandfathers Patek Phillipe. The Patek is my best watch!

But for some reason I've been wearing a Frank Muller Conquistador Tourbillon Knock-off! Because I tend to bang them around at work.

I don't really collect watches, but I have more than one now and I would love to have a couple more. So, I guess I could qualify as a collector. My everyday watch is a Breitling B-1 and my "special occassion" watch is a Breitling Montebrilliant Legende.

Earlier this week I was at a Breitling client appreciation dinner and was able to try on a couple of limited/special edition Breitlings including a Breitling for Bentley Flying B which was all yellow gold and diamond encrusted. I believe the retail value on that one was almost $200K.

That dinner must have been quite some gala...
Glad that you could go..
200K on your wrist....
whew..
I love to play off watches now and again. I seem to lease them as I turn them over fairly frequently..
I just had this Glycine Combat relumed at IWW.
Wonderful watch.

No big collection but I do love and appreciate fine watches. I do have 3 Hoyers (Pre-Tag) that I cherish but one of them no longer works and can't get parts. BOOO TAG, would not invest a large sum in one if they are not going to provide long-term parts availability.

I'm a wristwatch junkie...pocketwatches too, but for collecting, this is my only wristwatch that I would consider collectable. An original Elgin BW Raymond from the 60's. It's new old stock with original box, papers and the signed leather band. The band now is stiff from age and will crack if it's bent. Original price was 79.95.

My first (expensive) watch was a TAG, then Rolex, then Breitling. Considering the Anniversary moon watch from Omega right now.

Rolex Datejust, 2-tone
Rolex GMT Master II
Omega Speedmaster
Cartier Tank
Boliva Tank, 1943 14k rose gold
Tissot T-touch

Most purchased in the early 70's when wrist watches were much more affordable. Tissot is the newest but it's 5-6 years old and is my everyday watch.

My everyday watch is a Citizen Titanium Chronograph (Solar Powered)
Had it for over 10 years and no batteries.

I also have an older Pulsar Chronograph that I no longer wear. About 15 years old.

I wear this one when we go out.
http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/P10674461.jpg

I couldn't find pics of my other 2 watches. And the pic I tried taking with my phone looked blurry.

Just realized all of my watches were gifts from my wife. 2 before we got married.

And I have one that I received for my 5 year anniversary at work. I wear it when I don't want to break or lose me other watches.
Not a bad looking watch, but it was free.

Bobby, I got the cabinet at Bombay Trading Co. They are in a mall near you.

Ucubed, the top case is a winder box. Not a good one, but it works most of the time. Got it at an on-line discount store. I ordered/paid for a smaller one, but they messed up so they sent me this one instead, I think it was about $130. A good winder is going to cost $$$. I'd like to introduce two cool things to those who want to learn about them... the tourbillon and the minute repeater...

Tourbillon...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj2Ia0KWxN0

WHAT IS A TOURBILLON
When it comes to time, accuracy is everything. Nobody’s going to take a watchmaker who can’t tick the talk. The gravity of the situation was not lost on the watchmakers of past who realised that the pull of Newton’s forces did have an effect on the performance of their timepieces. In the normal course of use, a watch goes through a variety of positions as your arm swings. This is great for the automatic movement. However, with the pocket watch, it tends to be kept in a vertical position, and we all know how gravity loves to play with that. The result is small changes to the accuracy of the timepiece.

In the beginning
Many may just brush it off as trivial, but others are bothered by it to the extent it’s more than dust in the eye. For instance, back in the 18th century, sailors’ lives depended on the accuracy of their ship’s deck watch or marine chronometer. Ingeniously, it was Abraham-Louis Breguet, ticked off enough about the fact that he was losing time this way, who decided to bridge the problem in 1795 by inventing the régulateur à tourbillon.

The tourbillon (whirlwind) device has the escapement parts in a mobile cage that rotates in one direction, driven by a fixed wheel. This eliminates the effects of gravity on the balance wheel movement, and restores accuracy to the timepiece.

Piece de resistence
The tourbillon, patented by Breguet in 1801, is one of those complications that many watch manufacturers strive to produce as a piece de resistance of their collection. Others wonder why they bother since it doesn’t seem to serve a practical purpose. The main reason for this dissenting perspective is the difficult nature of their creation and the resulting high cost. Extremely precise mechanical tolerances are called into play – not too much weight, nor friction, or the entire system could wind up just looking pretty on your wrist while you seek the time elsewhere.

Marrying art and craft was Constant Girard-Perregaux’s aim as he created the Tourbillon Sous Trois Points d’Or, in 1867. The three-bridge design he invented for his pocket chronometer has been copied since, eventually finding its way onto wrists in 1991.

Mechanical marvels
The difficulty of manufacturing chronometer tourbillons fostered more innovative thinking, and Bahne Bonniksen, a Danish immigrant to England, came up with the karrusel (derived from carrousel). Patented by him in 1892, the karrusel has a movement that rotates at a slower rate than the chronometer tourbillon, but is more robust.

In the 1920s, Alfred Helwig, the Glashutte master watchmaker, invented the flying tourbillon regulator, which is pivot mounted on one side with no supporting bridge.

The arrival of the wristwatch resulted in watchmakers trying to find ways of miniaturising this already complicated movement. In 1930, the tourbillon regulator made its appearance in a wristwatch. Not too many tourbillons are in existence, and the quartz oscillator put an end to these mechanical marvels in the late ’60s. But the rebirth of mechanical watches has seen several companies taking up the miniaturisation process all over again.

Creative Applications
F.P. Journe’s Souverain Tourbillon is one of the more creative applications, while Blancpain seems to focus intensively on using these technical marvels. Omega has a self-winding Central Tourbillon which is produced in limited quantities, and has the movement as the centrepiece, while Patek Philippe swings in the other direction with its Sky Moon Tourbillon which has 12 complications and uses both
sides of the watch.

Whether it’s just a case of one-upmanship or practicality, the tourbillon is still an integral part of watchmaking and still causing a whirlwind of activity.

I love watches, but my wallet won't support my habit. My current daily wear is a Tag Aquaracer. I get quite a bit of wear from my Luminox F-16 Series also. Others that spend more time in the box than on my wrist include a Movado Museum Series, a Tiffany, a titanium Seiko chronograph and several Tommy Bahama casuals. The only Rolex in the house is on the wife's wrist; they are too heavy for my taste.

I really like the looks of the Oris in Larry's post. (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showpost.php?p=562262&postcount=34) Which collection is that from?

I have three watches with rubber straps - a Tag, a Luminox, and a Lacoste GMT. I like them for different reasons than leather. I don't consider any of these to be dress watches. For that application, leather straps (or metal bracelets) are preferred. For day to day wear, I really like the rubber strap. In fact, I bought my Tag with a stainless bracelet and replaced that with the rubber strap.

I guess they aren't for everyone. I don't like the heavy weight of a Rolex while others do. That's why there are so many watches (like cigars) - so we can all have our favorites.

Hate to say it, but this is a fake. Not a Brietling band, the main seconds hand has no Breitling B on the short end of it, bezel is defintely not a typical trademark Breitling style, the knobs are not trademark Breitling flairs, a number of other fake elements...

1. The bracelet (or band as you call it) is a ProII
2. I've never seen the "B" on the main seconds hand of a Breitling super avenger, Only Breitling for Bentley motors watches
3. BEZEL is the correct bezel.... for a Super avenger, are you thinking of the Breitling for bentley 6.75
4. The "knobs" as you called them are technicallly called "pushers" and they are legit, as is the whole watch
5. Please tell me the "number of other fake elements" as you put it.

would you like to see the 4,000 dollar proof of sale from the legit local authorized dealer i bought it from? would that convince you? or do you want to bust my balls some more?

I wear Breitlings daily for who knows how many years and know every model they sell pretty well. For the record, a while ago when Rolex hired a lawyer to go after fake market, the Rolex he was wearing in the meeting contained a fake band, bought from a reputable Rolex dealer (receipt and all).

Been wearing and buying the likes of Breitling, Chopard, Genta and Zenith way back when USA market didn't even know what they are (back then both Zenith and Genta were "grey" market only).

Not trying to establish my "watch red", if you're convinced the watch is not a fake, no issue on my side, it just looks strange to me.

whats wrong with quartz?

Nothing really. They are more acurate. There are a few quartz watches that are very sought after:

IWC Flieger Quartz
Rolex Oyster Quartz
any JLC Quartz
Omega X/33

We use many of workshops that create the fanciest watch brand parts out there. In Biel, everything and everyone is watch manufacturing business. Sounds fancy, but it is not, they are manufacturies and machine shops.

Part of a watch's allure is from their distribution and marketing which makes the same watch as someone else seem more esteemed or something. There's a lot of marketing BS when it comes to major brands of watches. They turn them out like nothing. Rolex, Omega, Breitling... they make 800K+ watches a year... How much hand finishing do you think really goes into them?

Here's a picture of Rolex leaving the driveway of one of the shops we use...

One thing you might want to consider if you have a lot of watches is to PVD coat it. I think we can do most watches for around 500 CHF. It looks pretty cool and if you have a sporty Rolex will set it apart from the rest.

Oh I agree totally, I have a Zodiac quartz that is the most accurate watch I've ever owned... it literally gains about 3 seconds over 9-10months lol. Incredible. My Invicta with the Miyota movement is still gaining 5-8 seconds a day, but its only a couple months old.

I was just asking because of the way driftking said "although it is quartz", as if there is something wrong with quartz.

I think most people would be really surprised to learn who actually makes the movements in certain brands, and what other brands share the EXACT same parts....

What happened? I blacked out.

And Thrak, the Arabic dials were the original release, then came the batons and the split arabic. All style are available at any vendor for BNIB purchase in 2009 as long as thats the one they got in... and the one you want.

As my local Breitling authorized dealers stated.... They don't often know what they are gettign in new orders. apparently they just spend their designated purchase per month and stuff comes in. Do i neccesarrily believe that... No... Hence why they always try and sell you whats there at that point in time.... so they wont have to special order it in.

It is possible that vendors sell NOS if it didn't sell well initially and space-in-the-case is limited... But that isnt the case because the Super Avengers "fly off the shelves" and the case that they are in is HUGE. I will check my COSC when i get home though just to make sure.

They are referring to the black face with black subdials, that was new for 2009.

The hour markings are known as "batons" and those were intro'd in 2006 IIRC. the arabics were intro'd on the original release of 2004, and the split arabic was late 2008 intro.

IWC's are good watches. Ususally understated and no one is going to cut your hand off for one or ask if it's real. A watch for when someone wants a time piece, not a status symbol as no one outside of watch people would ever look twice at them.

I've had this watch since '98. Been serviced twice. The most recent service last year, I replaced the bearing on the swing mass. It some play want wasn't winding the watch correct. I also had the 15 minute indiactors, and hands done again with luminova. When the service was done, my watch was within a few seconds a day acurate in 5 positions. I have the ticker tape somewhere. Very impressive job my friend did on the service.

This is a question right up my alley. I am not familiar with Tag Bands. However, most OEM bands are usually made to withstand a little more mistreatment than an aftermarket one. That's because they are usually not 100% leather.

If you smoke with it on it will take on an odor. And no amount of conditioning or treating will get it out. Sorry to say, but that's the truth of it.

I would think that a leather watch strap would be like leather funiture: won't hold smoke odor. Plus, unless you are blowing smoke directly on your strap or are smoking in a very poorly vented room, how much smoke is actually going to get to it ?

They are Homage watches...basically a copy of the original...many manufactures do it...some people call them expensive knock-offs. Looks like a nice Panerai Homage.

True but I don't have 4 grand for a Panerai. Plus you get to pick all of your components and can make it look however you want. From what I've read they are pretty nice pieces.

An actual Luminor Marina or Radiomir from Panerai is very expensive.

SisWatch727 is a brand called Getat. They make watches that look like Panerai (among others) but are significantly less expensive. Its not a bootleg because they dont claim to be a Panerai. There's no way a getat will every reach the $5k+ mark.

I will be ordering one (probably a power reserve in a brushed case), but dont expect it to be NEARLY as high quality as an actual Panerai. Its 1/50th (?) the price. But they are a great value for an excellent looking watch that you get to customize. :D

For all of you looking for deals. Check out some of the Russian made watches. Many of the now have ETA movements and are priced really well. Actually, I think ETA owns several of Russians brands (since the last few years).

Daniel Jean Richard is a great value brand. It's Gerrard Peregaux's second watch line.

Mido & Certina are great watch lines that are barely sold in USA, but certainly available. Quite popular in Switzerland and offer excellent value.

No kidding! Haven't read an issue of CA in years! The best Russian watches to get are the fairly simple aviator ones. There is a big titanium industry in Russia, so a titanium case could be nice too.

We just got a wicked cool Zenith Power Reserve Calendar watch in Gold. I think it has moon phase too. We are having it fixed by our watchsmith. Very thin gold case. Not kind of watch I would buy, but would like to be in the position to afford one... It's not winding, probably a bearing issue on swing mass or spring issue.

That does not mean much. You can buy a basic ETA movement for like $40. It's the polishing and finish work on the movement that drives the price up. All the blue screws and hand work can add up. The 8 day power reserve costs like $70 alone and needs a lot of finishing to be in a high end watch. Not to say that the profit margin on Breitlings and Rolex would leave a sour taste in anyone that owns one. Watches are one of the most profitable items in sense. World wide shipping and distribution costs nothing. It's all about the sales network and not discounting too much.

I was told that on a stainless watch, that the case, dial, bracelet/strap only account for 10% the watch's cost. Don't take this to the grave, just something I was told a while back.

That percentage sounds about right. Take into account the amount of money spent on promotion alone, it will drive the cost up. I was merely pointing out that even in some of the "high end" watches ,the guts underneath are all the same. Finishing is one thing, but building is another. I mean heck Seiko and Omega even have in-house movements (Seiko's spring drive is just amazing). To me the higher end watch makers need to at least make their own movements. I used to think AP's were grossly overpriced. But after watching their vids that they put out on making of a watch, you come to a new appreciation of the work involved. Where as some of the other makers are just putting a nice face on a $40 movement.

However, a lot of that will change in the future with the news of ETA not making movements available as they once did. A lot of maker's will be forced into in-house movements.

I heard a little about ETA scalling back how much and who they well movements to. I thought they wanted to sell their own completed watches?

Moses, ETA has been part of Swatch group for some years now and as such, per Swatch plan actually, decided not to sell movements to outsiders. Even prior to the decision, they only sold ETA movements as "finished" for a few years, as you can imagine the price went up accordingly. As is, these days of you want an ETA movement watch you will need to buy a Swatch product (a good number of brands under that umbrella).

Swatch's decision "forced" a number of houses to design and make their own movements, a good thing in my book.

Watch industry just went through a round of consolidation and there are just a few independent companies left at this point.

not to my knowledge, a breitling (let's use my watch as an example, so a super avenger) dial is about 400.00 and i know the case is 1100.00, the breacelet is also 550.00....

Now in terms of MFG cost i'm sure its MUCH lower.... and probably about 10%... but as far as the R&D that it cost to get them made... well, that goes down with every watch they make ... right???

Only if you buy them as separate parts similar to any other product such as a car. New car price, $15K, buying each part separately makes it a $50K product, just ask any body shop or insurance claim adjuster.

Breitlings, in particular, can be had at 30-40% discount, I've seen Avengers sell in the $2200-2400 range, but I do have connections in NY. Come to think of it, if you know where to buy, pretty much any watch can be had at a good discount. The only models that sell at or more than MSRP are those that are artificially controlled by manufacturers, some Pateks, one or two Rolexes, and a few more here and there. As an example, I could have had a (Zenith Primero) Rolex Daytona in either gold or gold/SS combo at a steep discount while that same model in all SS sold for 10-20% markup over MSRP.

I was stupid enough not to buy a brand new Zenith Chrono for $1400 when they were still a grey market item, these days they are much more. Instead, I did pull a trigger on a Genta Gefica (Chrono) for that same price, so you win some, you lose some...

I can tell you they are getting dials for a couple of dollars and cases are $25 probably even less. You are looking it at as a consumer, not a maufacturer that is making 800K+ watches a year. They can stamp out cases and mill them like no tomorrow. Tooling for one watch model is probably like 50K and from there they can crank out thousands year. Bracelets are usually done at a bracelet factory and different end links and clasps are designed. It may well be polished somewhere else, but maybe not.

Moses, I shop on 47th in NYC :-) Pretty much any watch you want even including extremely allocated Patek/Rolex pieces with waiting lists of 2+ years. The only time I could not get a good discount was when I was looking for a SS Daytona and had to pay 10% over MSRP, the gold one was offered at $12K (at the time a $21K watch) and I passed on principle.

If you can get the money to Switzerland in an hour, perhaps a prototype Rolex could be a possibility! It's not that often they come around. I haven't checked into them in over a year.

I could get you a Deep Sea no problem at MSRP if they are hard to get. The domestic watch market in Switzerland is no deal, you'd think it would be.

The hottest thing is PVD coating your Rolex Dive watch. I looks super sharp and not that expensive. I want to say like $500-600 to do. Watch has to be totally disassembled. The bezel, crown, and case back would be natural, alon with the springs and screws for the bracelet.

I now I see I probably answered your question incorrect. I am not sure if they are prototypes of current or upcoming watches, or watches they are considering producing. I have not seen one in person.

One kind of Rolex that is alittle more dubious are the ones that employees "build" out "borrowed" parts and built over months. In the end, they have a "Rolex", but not one I would bring a dealer to get fixed- if that makes sense. Employees at Omega have done a similar things. I suppose it happens everywhere.

Rolex has very tight and specific employee purchase program. It's like one watch a year to the employee only that can't be sold but a relative can have I think.

I'll let you know what I think about quality. If I have a good experience, I'll probably be buying another in stainless or Ti instead of PVD next. I could see myself have about 3 of them eventually.

I customized some stuff, and shipping is $20 if you want the fast shipping. All together mine was $147. I could have gotten a similar one for under $100 shipped had I not done fast shipping and not added some stuff. My next one will be under $100 or close to it at least.

are these made in the United States?

Getat's and Jackson Tse's watches are made in Hong Kong. Their manual winding watches are apparently very accurate. Apparently their auto's are hit or miss at times.

I like it. It's busy, and I'm sure it is far too big for me, but it's cool.

That reminds me a lot of my Breitling (except black and the bezel looks like it came off a Bently series watch)

http://www.watchesonnet.com/images/product/large/1810_1.jpg

Is that one of those homage watches you guys were talking about at one point?

Also, what's with everyone's obsession to paint things black these days? First I saw cars with black wheels (yuck! looks dirty to me). Next I see cars with flat black paint (REALLY stupid looking if you ask me). Now black watches?

I will say 20 years ago when I was 13 I had a black and gold Seiko that I LOVED. The black paint chipped off SO fast. I was so mad.

The watches that are pvd, aren't painted black unless they aren't truly pvd. Pvd is a chemical process and it shouldn't come off easily, if at all. IIRC

That's good to know that PVD watches are more durable than my old Seiko. I still don't understand why everyone wants everything to be black. Maybe it's my low intellect but I like shiny things. :r

Here is a good write-up on PVD process:

http://replicawatchfaqs.blogspot.com/2008/06/physical-vapor-deposition.html

It is supposed to make a watch less apt to corrosion. It's being used more frequently in diver's watches but has made it's way into fashion watches for the "black out" look.

Most PVD watches do not look as shiny black as s15driftking's. IMO the better looking PVD watches have a sort of sandblasted treatment done first. The one that s15driftking almost looks ceramic (which some watches have been made from and Rolex has been using ceramic in it's bezel's). Stuhrling's seems to have a few models which are made to look like other popular makers, Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Hublot, etc. So I can understand the comparison.

s15driftking is your quartz or automatic? And does the 53mm measurement include the pushers and crown? I ask because it does not look that large on your wrist.

It loooks like the watch is anodized.

Just picked this up this past week. I now have the bracelet version and the strap version. It came with a canvas strap but it was really uncomfortable and didn't adjust well. Decided to buy a Hirsch strap to put on and now I absolutely love this watch. Fairly cheap and just a great watch.

Alright, I can see that some of you guys are way bigger than me. 53mm would look pretty silly on my small wrist. Here's my biggest watch at 37mm. A Bvlgari Solotempo.

Larry

it was 53 with the crown, maybe closer to a 47mm.

I personally wouldn't wear anything smaller than 43mm because it would look just plain silly on my big wrist. That is a very cool design regardless.

And to MikeyC, the Stuhrling i bought isn't an hommage to any particular breitling although after further examination it does look like it robs a bunch of characteristics from several different brietlings, the bezel resembles the Bentley 6.75 for sure. Maybe all the breitling influence is why i like it so much.
