Much as I hate to say it look to Detroit and Penguins to come together again, unless Ovechkin hits Crosby with his car :D

I think the Hawks forwards compare well with Detroit, with the Hawks addition of Hossa and Madden and Detroit's loss of Hossa and Hudler. Detroit probably has more scoring talent, but I think the Hawks defense after Lidstrom might be better. Goaltending is the big question mark. I see the Hawks back in the Conference Finals, and maybe finally getting over the Red Wing hump, if the goaltending is strong.

I think for the Hawks it comes down to the netminder. Those young lads have proven they have what it takes.

Surprised that the Canes are an ice chip (.01 point) away from topping our list? Fans from this unconventional hockey market aren't. In fact, they *embrace their underdog role, although references to Hartford South still rankle ("When was the last time you heard the Avalanche being referred to as the 'Nordique-Avs'?" complained a poster on canescountry.com). What doesn't rankle is the wallet- and fan-friendly Hurricane Experience. After all, what's better than an elite team that loves you back at a bargain-basement price? Not much. Even before this spring's playoff run, which included two Game 7 road wins, the Hurricanes offered an "Ice Your Price" plan that guaranteed a two-year freeze on season-ticket costs. As it was, the Canes' average ticket price of $38.38 was already fifth lowest in the NHL, and only one (the Blues) of the three teams with cheaper ducats made the playoffs. As for the requited love, PR chief Mike Sundheim says the team prides itself on making players accessible to the community. Practices at the RBC Center are open to the public, and weekend workouts draw hundreds of fans. Best of all, players stick around afterward to sign autographs. Even visitors are impressed by the Canes-Caniacs love affair. "They know that they are no longer a bandwagon mob," blogged one Bruins supporter who road-tripped to Canes country during Boston's unhappy conference semis, "and they want everyone to know it." Thanks to the team's showing in our Ultimate Standings, everybody does.

I would assume the same. Personally I think McD is out to sign the big names, but doesn't have much hockey sense. I mean yes, we do have him locked up long term, but with some big contracts coming to an end soon we need to strike now. Having him out until December, with Havlat gone will hurt the team. And who knows how Huet will perform this season as the clear #1.

I may be a pessimistic fan, but it seems like the team is on the brink of falling apart if we dont make some smarter moves in the future. I've seen the Hawks when they were terrible and I don't want to go back.

Tom, you are welcome to Hossa, IMHO. He played in two consecutive Cup Finals, and ended up on the losing side each time. If he could have actually mustered some offense against his old team this year, Detroit might have had the Cup again!

Of course, he wasn't the only one that didn't play well in the Finals, but I'm not sorry to see him go. I will miss Hudler, though!

Yep. I can't disagree, their game just wasn't there in game 7. The Pens definitely didn't want to lose twice to the Wings - They were the better team, and I hate to say it, but they deserved the Cup this year!

Well the Sharks as usual arent going to do anything major.
Apparently cooler heads prevailed and they have decided not to make any major moves as of yet.

Heard an interview with the GM where he stated free agency is a bad area to get involved in. Stated trades are where they make their moves citing the Jumbo trade and some others. Sounds like some players could still be moved, but more like this season will be another tweak it and see what happens.

Looks like I will be selling my first round playoff seats again. :(

I have no doubt they will make the playoffs.
They just seem to lack the heart in the playoffs and now seem to have it in their head they cant go deep. In the end they may have to blow it up just to change the mindset of the team.
Shame cause I really like most of the players you listed. quality guys, good clean players.

$1000.00 for my son to play the season. He's still 3 and will be at the start of the season, but they allegedly will let him play minimites. My wife shat an eggroll when I told her the cost. Maybe I will wait till next year. He wants to play, but damn thats pricey.

No doubt, Greg...this year everyone should be able to get at least one #1 goalie. I also added penalty minutes back into the mix, changed GAA to Save Percentage, and a couple other minor tweaks. I will start a new thread for the league as soon as I have heard back from last years' 16 as to whether they are in or out. :)

My favorite part of the Heatley trade: (http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=22876)

According to a source, barring an absolute miracle, Heatley will be an Ottawa Senator this season. If I could rate a "non-deal" into the E-system, this would be an E5 folks.

Dany Heatley is a Sen right now, and the Senators are no closer to trading him than they were the day he announced he wanted out. In fact, they are much further from a deal than ever before.

He posted that two days ago.

Hockeybuzzhogwash.com tracked his "rumors" for the 2008 year, and he only got 2.4% accurate, which is less than the 3.4% chance or randomly picking one of the 30 teams out of a hat. :r

Don't like seeing guys get hurt but I'm sure he has learnt his lesson about cutting across the middle with his head down especially when a guy like Paneuf is on the ice.

What I don't like is that it seems now a days in the NHL even when there is a good hit(I don't think he left his feet) the other team feels the need to start a line brawl or go after the guy that laid the hit(coming of the bench WTF!!!). Back in the day the other team would have kept it in their back of their mind and used it to fire the team up and get even at a later point in time.

I would be suprised if he didnt already know not to do this seeing as how he is playing in the show and had a fairly decent year on the islanders last year. Pretty sure he knows how to play the game. That said he made a mistake and he more than payed for it. There are two sides to this for sure. He is a fairly talented player though. I am not a big Phenuf guy so my view on this is likely impacted by that. Running someone like that in pre season is bush. The games dont count and you got rookies and even some jrs players out there generally.

Change this to Phenuf destroying some jr player and ending his chances to play in the pros in preseason in a meaningless game and maybe it looks different.

Just another view. Yes it was a monster hit and a thing of beauty to watch. That said its not game 7, its a meaningless preseason game.

"Running" a guy and a clean hit are two completely different things in my book and as far as I can see it was clean.

If they are meaningless why play them?

I think preseason games are there for the simple reason coaches want to see how guys on the cut off "bubble" handle a real game. What if one of the Junior guys puts a hit like that on someone? His stock would rise considerably in the coach's eyes. And don't think for a second a young defensmen trying to earn a spot on a NHL roster wouldn't give his left nut to make a hit like that.

I have always told my boys (both D men) to practice like you want to play. It's part of the game and every guy that pulls that sweater over his head knows it.

Have a great weekend!

The Flames are my team but I try not to be a homer. I actually don't like Phaneuf, (and I mean personally) he has his ups and downs last year was a down and part of his game that was gone was that fear when he is out there (ala Scott Stevens) I watched the game (not just the U-Tube hit) and it was a clean hit on a guy that was carrying the puck through the zone. Now you know I luv ya Mike (even if you are a sharks fan :D) but if you watch the hit (there are a few more angles on the flames website) it was not bush.

Okposo had his head down (dumb) and was carrying the puck. He took Phaneuf's shoulder in the noggin, Phaneuf didn't leave his fit, didn't charge it was all good. The bad part is someone getting hurt, if Okposo pops up and skates off this is a non issue no penalty on the hit, no further investigation by the league (so I am told). The bush part is several Islanders coming after him after a clean hit, I am so tired of half assed players running after every guy that hits a player cleanly (and yes even the flames are guilty of it ala Ollie fighting I don't remember who after Backlund got leveled cleanly).

Hitting is part of the game, and a good clean hit should not be measured by the fact that a guy got hurt (he is ok by the way) no more than a dirty hit should be measured by lack of injury.

Just my opinion.....................well that and Mike is wrong :banger;s

Clearly you are playing at words here.

You can run a guy in the course of the game and have it be clean and part of the game. Running a guy to us on the west coast comes from the phrase ran him over. That is what Phenuf did. He ran him over. The issue I was attempting to address is was that hit needed between two players who both have established spots on a squad? They dont play in the same division or even confrence. They may play once again this season, but likely not. There was no message to be sent for the regular season and the odds of them meeting in the post season are zero. The point of the hit was what? Nothing. It was Phenuf doing what Phenuf does. He injured a player which may have long term effects in a meaningless preseason game.

By meaningless we both know I meant they do not count towards stats and chances at a cup which is the whole purpose why every regualr season game and playoff game is played. They are meaningless to stats and chances at a cup. Stuff like this is why many teams sit out certain players. They dont want or need as you pointed out some jr player trying to render a big hit on a star player to make a roster spot.

As to practice like you play. I agree yo always practice and play hard. That said Al I cant find a reason why Phenuf needed to level the guy in a pre season game. He is not a bubble player. He is known for hunting players with their head down and laying them out.

What purpose did the hit serve to the flames chances of winning a cup?
Maybe you will argue that the hit will set the tone for the whole season. I am not buying that and that was not in Phenufs head when he made the hit. He saw a guy to level. He probablly saw him with his head down earlier in the game and figured if he would run him if he got the chance. Watching the replay he lined that dude up and destroyed him. It could have ended a lot worse for oposo. I am glad it appears it didnt. I hope he has no lingering effects that impact his season as a result.

I know you like the hit. I guess we can agree to disagree. maybe in 12 years I will hold the same view on this. Currently I dont.

I don't understand why you should back off in a pre-season game.

Do you think any player is running through his head, who is this guy?, will I face him again?, etc etc?

Based on what your saying every hit should be weighed against a certain set of criteria that could/would change every game.

These guys do this on instinct, guys like Stevens for example are better at it than most.

There is no point to the game and why risk a star players injury in an meaningless game.

As to whats in the head. Al I have taken penalties as I am sure every poster here has on guys in rec league. If I can know who is on the ice and that they fugged with me or a teamate previously and I need to go say high and remind them we wont take it, then yes NHL players know. I am not a big guy or super faster nhl player. When I play I know damn well who is on the sheet when I step on because at that moment its my job.

We have all played here so I am not going to go through the list of ways he could have played it differently getting the puck and not laying him out. If he couldnt stop him without laying the shoulder to the head hit then he will be worse then -11 this year. I will just leave this one alone.

Really? what about when you run someone on the boards from behind? He has the puck and you run his ass over and crush him? Is that not running a guy? I hear everyone else call it running a guy besides it being boarding. I will use my term for running a guy which applies to running over a guy with or without the puck and whether he is in the open ice or on the boards.

For what it's worth, Scott Burnside is questioning the "necessity" of the hit on ESPN.com as well.

EDIT...it is on "The Insider" (subscription based), so I posted it here.

Ouch! That's about all I can say after viewing the YouTube video of Dion Phaneuf's monster open-ice hit on Islanders winger Kyle Okposo during Thursday night's Isles-Flames preseason game in Calgary.

In a Scott Stevens moment, Phaneuf slid over from his position on right defense to crunch an unsuspecting Okposo, who'd actually been nudged into harm's way by backchecking Flames forward Nigel Dawes. The seismic blow left the 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward crumpled on the ice in need of medical attention. As a precaution, Okposo was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Late Thursday night, Islanders spokesman Seth Sylvan updated Okposo's condition via text message, saying: "[Okposo] had a mild concussion. He'd undergone a CAT scan and he was cleared to return to the team's training camp [in] Saskatoon."

We hope Okposo will be no worse for the wear after the mind-numbing hit. With head injuries, it's hard to form a clear prognosis for recovery. It could be a day or a career. In this case, we hope it's the former.

While I'm not going to hammer Phaneuf for taking his shot, I do wonder whether it's really worth the risk in a preseason game. I mean, if Okposo had made a split-second move or brought his stick up, Phaneuf could have ended up on the wrong end of it.

It also made me wonder about the league's training camp schedule. While I know today's players come to camp in terrific shape, I still find it odd that they have just a day or two or three of camp before jumping into their exhibition schedules. I don't how guys can be ready for game competition that quickly.

Perhaps the Devils have the right idea, playing only one game in the first 10 days of camp. It gives them more practice time to prepare and get themselves up to speed for game play. After all, these are competitive guys by nature. Under game conditions, even in a preseason game, that nature clicks in. It's why Scott Stevens just shrugged at me several years back when I asked him why he was blocking shots in a meaningless exhibition game. His wordless response simply said, "It's what I do."

Interestingly, the Flames and Islanders will meet again Saturday night in Saskatoon. I'll be curious as to whether new Flames head coach Brent Sutter opts to rest Phaneuf for that one.

There was another story that came out of Thursday's Flames-Isles game. It was the return of longtime Flames sniper Theo Fleury, who hadn't played an NHL game since April 4, 2003. The diminutive 41-year-old thrilled the home crowd by scoring the game-winning shootout goal. On the night, he received 10:56 minutes, recording one shot, one takeaway and one hit, as well as the shootout winner. I figure he's a long shot to make the club's NHL roster, but if he wants to continue playing, he could end up with Flames' new AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, British Columbia. I'm pretty sure he'd be a nice box-office attraction for the new franchise.

Pink text for cali girl hockey? OOOO you dirty bish
As to the forward dad. I will say, you saw the video he wants to score goals and likes to crash the net already at home when dad is playing goal. Already took a couple sticks up high. The odds of him playing D seem small, but he looks like hes gonna be a big kid so maybe.

Not to impressed with ESPN and hockey or ESPN and much else.
If the flames rest phaneuf in the next one I wont have good things to say about that. I cant imagine anyone else here would either. You gonna make that hit, you better be there to answer for it. Especially because preseason is every bit as important as regular season right?

Most teams only put their best players in a couple/few pre-season games, no sense in getting them hurt, and the p-s is more about seeing which bubble players make the roster. If I was the Flames, I wouldn't play Phaneuf either, Mike. JMHO.

Ahbroody
09-18-2009, 04:54 PM
Tom thats exactly my point through all of this. Its preseason and teams dont want star players hurt, but laying a hit like that in preseason is just ? Both players are not trying to earn a spot. He saw him and took several steps to lay the hit. He lined him up and risked severe injury in the preseason.

See to me thats chicken shiet.
If he is such a bad ass he will lay guys out in the pre season cause it matters so much, then stand up and be ready.
I find a flaw in anyones logic who will argue the hit was necessary and good, but then will argue the next game where he will have to pay for such a relevant and necessary hit he should sit out. Why? cause he may get hurt in a preseason game and be lost for the season? Yeah cause then he would have gotten hurt in a meaningless preseason game.

This is actually a really good question.
All you who said the hit was relevant and the preseason game mattered and it was good and right. If the Flames sit/hide Phanuef and dont let him answer up is that chicken shiet? If not how come? Isnt the pre season game so important? I mean it was important enough to risk someones season, so surely its important enough to play phaneuf.

Its always amazed me seattle has no team. Figured they would at some point. Wouldnt mind seeing a team go to winnipeg.

Phoenix unfortunatley started out all wrong. Having gone to games in the old building you would know why.
In the old building if you sat on the end bowl you would have to watch the game on the jumbo tron when they came down to the end as the way the stands were set up you were literaly over the action. The league wants to keep the team there so it will be interesting to see what they do.

Biggest rumor in Chicago doesn't involve the Hawks, but their AHL team, the Wolves:

Chris Chelios tmay sign with the AHL's Chicago Wolves if he is unsuccessful in landing an NHL contract in the next week.

At 47 years of age it appears the chances of him signing an NHL deal is slim at best.

The Wolves opened up camp last week and there is a very strong chance Chelios arrives shortly thereafter. It makes sense for the veteran D-man to stay in Chicago where he's surrounded by family including his son who plays for the the Chicago Steel in the USHL.

I am really concerned over how this European trip is going to effect their start.

That being said, the Pens had a crappy start after their trip last year, but turned it around to win the Cup.

I hope Hossa's November return isn't overly optimistic, and that Huet can live up to his contract.

What are your thoughts, Nate?

Honestly, I think we will be fine. I think we are home for all but 5 games in October, so I hope for a good start. I really don’t know what to think about the games in Finland though. Only time will tell how it will affect the young guys. When is Burish gonna be back, or is he at all?

Watched my 'Canes get whooped by the Flyers last night with BarneyBandman. Carolina had poor execution but were in the game. Flyers didn't look like world beaters, but they certainly deserved the win. Their two golas came bang-bang during an extended set of power plays.

Hoping for a better effort from the Hurricanes as the year progresses.

Joe, doesn't look much better for the Canes tonight. They are too good of a team not to get better.

:D Hope so... nowhere to go but up at this point! Bruins looked strong and confident. I expect them to be in the mix again this year.

Hurricanes added some very good pieces that were upgrades at some key positions... but the sum of the parts is greater than the sum of the whole at this point. This will be a good test for Coach "Mo."

Congrats to the Bruins on a decisive win. :tu

Sharks look solid and really controlled the game last night against the Ducks. The Heater got a goal and an assist and the top line looked like it is starting to gel. He actually made a really good team play on the assist and it appears he was looking for it to give back after Setto made the play on the boards to keep the puck in the zone.

For any one interested:

NHL Game Center Live free weekend http://https://gamecenter.nhl.com/nhlgc/secure/registerform?free=true&intcmpid=nhl.com:gcl:fpnsnstrp

Its like NHL center Ice except online...pretty good quality too:tu

Do you have a promotion code or another link? That link bounces because there are two http://'s in it, so I took the first out and it goes to the normal Gamecenter signup, which only has the Monthly or Yearly billing option.

I'll probably end up buying Center Ice like I do every year, but I'm curious to see the quality of Gamecenter.

Problem with redheads is they are either hot or not. He fits into the 2nd category, and plus he's too old for my jockstrap smelling world. Let me know when your finished with Patrick Kane's :r

5 stick wager for Thursday's game?

On a single game? No, anything can happen in 1 game, plus the Wings are at home and pizzed off by the Blues...but I would do a 5-stick on the season series. You down? :)
