Great win for the Wings :D They really just stole all the momentum in that second period. Chicago at least still tried to make it a game with 2 goals in the 3rd. Season series is 3-2 Hawks with 1 game left.

not going to happen Tom. I am still holding out for a Calgary push and Wings flame out. Hey that works on 2 levels. get it Flame out. huh get it. See what I did there. hahah
So how many games is Cooke getting for the HS on Savard?
Second offense in 3 months. Walker earlier in the season. Savard got strechered off. I think atleast 4 games no pay.

That was a nasty Hit a Blind Side head shot.Cook needs to get a suspension. His entire career has been cheap shots. Let him stay suspended for as long as Sevard is out. In addition this is a stupid move since it now makes Crosby a target.

I'm disgusted at Claude Julien and the Bruins for letting that hit on Marc Savard go and not doing anything about it. There is a line between what's legal and what's dirty and Cooke crossed way over the line.

As I said before. Welcome to the salary cap era. This year was the year it finally hit the wings and they lost some key players. Do to the cap the extreme depth the wings used to have isn't there. I remember in years past the wings 3rd line was better than teams 1st line. Those days are gone. Welcome back to the pack.

I still don't agree with this statement. They still have great depth, but they haven't been healthy and they aren't playing well together right now. They need to get their heads into the full 60 minutes of a game and then you'll realize, salary cap or no salary cap Red Wings are still a very good team.

Yeah, I would be very surprised to see the Wings out of the playoffs. It is pretty unusual to see them play so inconsistently, but I would definitely not want to go against them in the playoffs. And I would agree that I don't think the Wings problems this year are cap related. They did lose Hossa, but they have had a lot of injuries. However, their biggest problem is that Datsyuk and Zetterberg are not superhuman this year.
I am so looking forward to (hopefully) having a dog in the playoff fight this year. It has been WAAAAAAYYY too long. Go Kings!

Chris Chelios is headed back to the show. :wo :tu :D
The 48-year-old defenseman, a three-time Norris Trophy winner, has been called up by the Atlanta Thrashers, general manager Don Waddell told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
"Can't wait. Got to make the most out of this chance," Chelios said in a text message to ESPN.com.
Chelios had 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 46 games with the AHL's Chicago Wolves this season. He signed an NHL deal with the Thrashers on March 2. The Wolves are Atlanta's primary AHL affiliate.

We will disagree.
As I said last time we had this discussion, deep teams still win when players get injured as other players step up. That didnt happen. There is no point in me linking stats pages they are easily found. As a side note I believe the Wings are healthy so I suppose we will see a much improved effort. As others have said they likely will make the playoffs, but as I also pointed out a few months ago to you it will be a 7 or 8 seed no higher. I still believe there is a possibility they will miss it also. It really comes down to a few factors.

Here's the thing with deep teams losing players to injury and still winning. They had 7-8 players out at 1 time. I cannot find any NHL team that can have that many players out and still win on a consistent level. All while having a rookie goalie playing.

Yeah, it's a credit to the NHL when I can honestly say that there is no such thing as an easy first round match up. I think the Kings could beat or be beaten by any potential first round opponent. But with 16 games to go and only a 9-point cushion, I am still focused on just getting to the show.

Highlights from tonight for the Sharks.
1) Sharks tie a team record set in 1996 scoring 6 goals in 1 period
2) Marleau hits 40 goals
3) First time in NHL history a team has trailed after 2 in three consecutive games to come back and win all three.
4) Nabby is now tied for 28th all time for wins as a NHL goalie.
5) They jumbled the lines tonight in the 3rd and you could say it worked. Putting Marleau and Mitchell on the same line appears to have worked. Mitchell is the only guy who can keep up with Patty as to speed.
Watch how Mitchell just explodes up ice.

Quite the crazy finish in the Flyers game yesterday....I agree Tom, Huet played well enough for the win, but it seemed the Flyers really picked it up a step after Hartnell got his first goal in...forever (think it was January). I don't think it was any coincidence he started the rush for the game winner. Crazy game.
I'm interested to see the start of the Flyers Rangers game today. Carcillo fought Gaborik last time they met (IMO - the fight was instigated (not in terms of a penalty) by Gaborik but the NYR cried afterward that Carcillo fought him. What was he supposed to do, stand there and get punched? Anyway, if Avery plays today I think the game could be very interesting to say the least.

Boarding in ice hockey is a penalty called when an offending player violently pushes or checks an opposing player into the boards of the hockey rink, when the player is facing the board.
The referee used his discretion and decided that the nature of the hit deserved a major penalty. When a major for boarding is called it is accompanied by a game misconduct (expulsion from the game). Therefore Ovechkin's game was over early.
I saw the replay and not sure weather or not the hit deserved a major, as it looked like a combination of Ovechkin's push and Campbell falling. That being said Ovechkin is building up a history of questionable boards. In general I like the fact that the ref sided with Campbell because in that circumstance he was in a very vulnerable position.
I hurt my knee pretty bad when I was 16 from a questionable hit in the same situation.

As a player, I will say that Ovechkin's push was dirty...you know as a player a guy can't protect himself from behind close to the boards, and injuries often result...even Alex knew he was wrong.

Similar plays to that happen a few times a day it seems, but the player is usually closer to the boards and the forward will take him in to the boards, not push him at an odd angle. He will get some days for that. Well maybe not though if cooke can headshot whats the difference. Ovi had less intent to injure here then Cooke, and he isnt as dirty of a player. Kind of wonder how the league will play this after letting Cooke walk on a headshot

The Sharks have also been less then stellar at times since the break. Nabokov pisses me off. It seems like he doesnt play with desire all the time. Also this trade for Wallin trade is seeming like it may be the third year in a row a deadline trade is not going to help the team and hurt cheimstry. I don't think Ovie had intent to injure Campbell, but as anyone who plays the game can tell you, there ain't muich dirtier play you can make than giving someone a shove in the back 3-4 feet away from the boards. I have literally broken a couple noses of people who have done that to me over the years.

Agreed Tom. The issue was the distance from the boards. If he is a few feet closer the injury does not occur and its a non issue. The league gave him 2 games. This is frustrating to me as Cooke who knew he was going to hurt Savard got nothing.
As for you Christos if you werent such a Wings homer I could take your input more seriously. I am always willing to admit the issues with my team as I am a fan of the game above anything else and a Sharks fan second. Last season the analysist all said Detroit was going to be a much different team because of age issues and depth. That is exactly what happened. Your captain is 39 and many of your core players are over 35. I dont think next season will be dramatically different unless the Redwings get a facelift.

You can't disagree that the Wings will be a dangerous team to face in the 1st round. Sharks have more talent than the Wings but year after year in the playoffs we see that doesn't always equal a Stanley Cup. We are going to need some younger players to step up on Defense. However, our forwards and centers other than Draper, Bertuzzi and Holmstrom are all under 35 years old. So while I see your point, I don't see where we need the major facelift.

I would never count out the Wings in the playoffs. Depth and experience can be huge.....if they don't run into a highly physical team that will wear them down. The issue will be your caotain will be 40 next year and a lot of the guys with the experience will be upper 30s. The injuries experienced this year will likely occur on some level again.
The wings will be scarry in the playoffs provided they keep winning and get the help they need from the other teams. Like I have been saying for months no better then a 7 seed likely the 8 so the wings will see the hawks or the sharks first

The pace and intensity of this game was much like a playoff game. With both teams fighting for a playoff spot it was expected. Both teams played great and the goaltending was outstanding. Jimmy Howard worked very hard and didn't give up rebounds which made the difference in the game.
Thanks to the great scheduling in the NHL, Wings are off until Friday to play a back to back. Why give a team 3 days off then make them play 2 in a row?

Wiz is a complete piece of sh!t. Seabrook will probably be concussed from that cheap shot, and the Hawks will be down 3 of their top 5 D-men. Wiz needs a lengthy sit-down for that play. And Dustin Byfuglien stood around after the play and let Ducan Keith fight Wiz. What a freaking pu$$y.

Wisniewski argued that Seabrook's injury was not due to a hit to the head.
"It probably will get looked at, but the result wasn't because of a shot to the head. I'm 5-foot-11 and he's 6-3. What happened was that my face hit his face. The visor came down and cut up my nose. I was shocked when I saw the result of it on the replay," Wisniewski said.
"I didn't do anything wrong," Wisniewski added. "The result of what happened isn't good, but there wasn't anything wrong that I did."

It seemed pretty clear to me the hit was delivered as a response to Seabrook's hit 20 seconds earlier. Was Wisniewski's hit illegal? Yes. Intent to injure? Not sure...really hard to say. Uncalled for? IMHO, no. Seabrook was late delivering his check...which looked high and bounced the guy's head off of the boards. The hit he received clearly seemed retaliatory and, IMHO, definitely served a purpose. Just like fighting majors, some are uncalled for, but many serve a purpose in the game.

While I agree the hit on Perry was late also, it only caught him high because Perry was bent low, I don't think there was any intent to deliver a head shot. Wiz left his feet and came charging from 65 feet out to put his stick and forearm into Seabrook's melon. I absolutely think if was uncalled for, but again, I respect your view, but hope that Campbell sees it the way I do.

I don't think explained myself clearly. It was illegal in the fact it should have been a penalty. Fighting is, by the same definition, illegal. Same with hooking, slashing, etc.
I think what makes hockey such a great sport is that the players can, to some extent, police themselves. It's tough to balance self-policing and 100% clean play though. If rules were put in place that took some of that away I think the sport’s popularity would diminish even further.
It's kind of similar to the headache (pun not intended) that Nascar is dealing with right now. They want their drivers to police themselves on the track, because that's what the fans want. Then in their fourth race someone gets intentionally spun and accidentally flipped upside down. Oops! Now what? (Sorry for bringing Nascar into the discussion! :r)
To really confuse matters (:D) if Wisniewski were suspended I wouldn't have a problem with it. I just didn't see the hit as "uncalled for". If a player gets hurt by way of an illegal hit, then I think it should be left up to the discretion of the league whether any further action should be taken (probation, fines, suspensions, etc.), regardless if the intent was to injure (which I think is impossible to determine anyway). The fact that the hit was illegal is enough for me. :2

The Sharks continue their crap play dropping a 4th consecutive game. If the Yotes keep winning and the Sharks keep imploding they will be in 4th by next week. As it sits the Yotes have more wins so a tie will equal 4th for the Sharks. Why stop there though maybe they can manage to fall to 5th or 6th. One of the only bright notes has been Joe Pavelskis play. Fresh off the Olympics he has not gone into the Outhouse like certain other olympic participants who are having trouble locating the net. Tonight the Sharks had 22 shots missed the net. Nevermind those that did.

Good news. :)
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook returned to the ice Friday, two days after a vicious hit knocked him out of a game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Seabrook, who missed Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Kings, said he's feeling better and could play Saturday night against the Phoenix Coyotes. But coach Joel Quenneville said he'll decide on Saturday.
Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended eight games for the hit in the second period. Seabrook understands Wisniewski likely was retaliating for Seabrook's earlier hit on Ducks winger Corey Perry.
"I don't know why he couldn't have done it a different way," Seabrook said. "The hit I made on Perry warrants a fight or guys run me a little bit out there, but I think there's a better way to do it."
Seabrook said he watched "quite a few replays" of the hit, and doctors told him he likely blacked out.
The incident obviously strained a friendship. Wisniewski, a former Blackhawk, is getting married and verbally invited Seabrook to the wedding. When asked Friday if he'll attend, Seabrook first said, 'No,' but he added, "we'll see."
"He called me and left me a message," Seabrook said. "It was nice of him, but I'm just going to take some time and figure it out from there.
"I'm pretty [ticked] off right now," he added. "But time will tell. Time will heal, and we'll see down the line."

From what I see with the Sharks Pavelski is one of the only guys on the team selling out right now every night.
Thorton gift wrapped the first goal by turning over the puck at the red line to Pasani. Basically Pasani just took the puck from him and no one was back. The second goal no one even touched Penner till he was in the crease. They showed the play from the back. Malhotra literaly stopped skating after Penner and no one bothered to pick him up. Why Malholtra decided to just not bother is beyond me.
horrible defense, horrible passing, one or two players giving all the rest just coasting. The Yotes deserve the spot. The only thing I am wondering is it seems like the Sharks of last year. They might be peaking to soon. Its hard to stay hot for a long time. They have won 9 straight. Or are the Sharks trying to duck the Wings and hide in the middle of the pack? I doubt that. They are just horrible right now. Nabby? yeah he got exposed in the Olympics and it looks like everyone knows how to beat him now. I really think that everyone figured him out based on the olympics. He is getting worked harder then the village bicycle these days. Everyone is taking turns.

Wings are 8-2-1 since the Olympic break. Anyone who thinks they aren't the favorite to come out of the West (especially with the way Jimmy Howard is playing lately) hasn't been watching hockey. Hope they move far up enough in the seeding that the Hawks don't catch them in Round 1.

Agreed. The Wings have gotten very hot of late. Almost everyone has been playing 500 or worse hockey since the Olympics. The Wings and Yotes are playing great hockey. I expected them to come on strong at the end, but didnt expect everyone else to play 500 or worse.

Well they are 4 out with 2 games in hand, but based on win differential they still wont get 5th in a tie as he preds have 6 more regulation wins so they will need to surpass them in points out right.
I am hoping the Sharks avoid them as they have become red hot of late. Dont think it will carry them all the way to the cup, but definetly think they can make some noise in the playoffs and upset someone for sure. I still think they are a 7 seed, but if everyone else keeps losing and they stay hot they could make it.
Nice to see the Sharks redeem themselves with a shutout over the Stars after the humiliating loss to them last week. Nabby played very strong to get the shutout, but definetly got lucky a few times.

Flyers finally showed a pulse last night against the Devils (who they've inexplicably owned this year). Hopefully it's a sign of things to come, but I'm not holding my breath.

man if you would have told me most of the west would implode after the Olympics I would have taken that bet.
Sharks have a chance to put a really sold grip on 1st place if they can win tomorrow. It will be interesting if the Kings end up in 8th and the Sharks in 1st as the Kings really had the Sharks number this year. That said the Kings will seed higher.
Looking at the schedules for April. This is not all the games, but the big factors.
Wings have 3 against the jackets
Kings have 3 against the ducks
Avalanche play the sharks, hawks, and canucks
Preds play Wings, Yotes, and Blues x2
I can see Wings getting up to 5th as their schedule is pretty favorable, Avalanche may end up in 8th, with the Preds 6th and the Kings 7th. I think your Kings could make it to 6th though it really depends. Your only 2 points behind them with 2 games in hand. The Avs definetly have the least favorable schedule out of 5-8 seeds. Relax the Kings will be making the playoffs provided the Duck's dont rape you and Calgary doesnt get red hot. I think the team in the most danger is actually the Preds.

03-31-2010, 01:45 AM
Yeah, I'm not too worried about them missing the playoffs, but they have looked very out of sync the last few games. Their offense is MIA since the break. I think in the end the Kings will finish in 6th, but they play better against the Sharks than they do the Canucks or Hawks. In the regular season, at least. But in the end they need to be winning at the end of the season. They are not a veteran team that can just turn it up a notch. Tonight was a good start.
These last couple of weeks should be very exciting. -(P

Overtime...not a big deal for the Bruins if they get the 2, as the Leafs are a non-factor.

Like to see what those who don't know hockey think of that headline. :r

That there is a great easter headline..
The leafs may be a non-factor playoff wise, but the make great case fot he B's in the Draft.
PS as long as they do it right

No offense but I hope so. I actually dislike the flyers more than the hated Rag Skirts (rangers).
I am glad that Lavvy got another shot. The Isles should have ket him an S-canned Milbury back when he gott the axe.
None taken. As much as I want the Flyers to succeed, part of me doesn't want them to make the playoffs either. They are playing terribly, and they aren't going anywhere with the goalie situation they have. Missing the playoffs may cause a bigger shakeup, which seems to be needed for this team. I think Snyder has to realize it regardless if they make it or not though.

Nice win by the flyers. Kind of funny watching Carcillo terrorize Holmstrom all game. Man was he a pest.
Sunday scrap review
Guerin went looking for a fight and did a good job. Clear win and refs jumped in to save Slater as it could have gotten really ugly

Way to go Hawks!
And on a personal note, this Friday I played hockey for the first time in over two years. It was a great feeling to get back on the ice!
Have I mentioned how much I have enjoyed the addition of Peter Mueller....:tu
GO AVS.....FINISH!!!!!

Would have preferred to see the Avs win in regulation, but better than nuttin'.
Yea, that point for the Sharks didn't help the 'Hawks any..... But I'll take the 2 points.... Man that was a roller-coaster....
Hope Mueller isn't too dinged....

Unless they play the Hawks in round 1. ;)
Just kidding, never like to see any player get hurt.
Well, maybe Sean Avery. ;)

Wild was down 3-1 after an empty net goal, and just scored 2 goals in the last minute of the 3rd...Wild game!

BS penalty on the Wild in OT, and the Schmanucks win. 4 on 3 powerplays are tough to defend.

Sharks stole a point last night. They played maybe 20 minutes of hockey last night and stole a point.
Thinkingthe post season may be very short for the sharks this year.

Maybe not, I am thinking it might be pretty short for Nashville and Colorado.

B's Pick up a point 3 ahead of the Rangers, 1 up on the flyers and 1 back of the Habs.

Great night for the Flyers tonight...they win and both the Rangers and Thrashers lose. If the Rangers don't get a point tomorrow against the Leafs, the Flyers clinch (as far as I can tell). If the NYRs do get a point, the Flyers and the Rangers play a home and home over the weekend to close the season.
As a Flyers fan...go Leafs! As a hockey fan...that would be a hell of a home and home.
But, go Leafs! :)

Only a true hockey fan would understand your logic. I do. :)
Hell of an OT by Anderson....
Play by Liles in OT, the breakaway by Sedin was nice...
Into the shootout.....
AVS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!
Duchene comes through!!!!!
NICE!
