Have the flyers been called for a penalty yet? I know they commit about 1 every 2 or 3 minutes, but nothing gets called. I missed most of periods 1 and 2 tonight so maybe they actually got called for something?
"Byfuglien, 2 minutes for receiving from Pronger!!!...Get in da box!!!!"
Everybody take a deep breath and stop the whining about the non-calls! :su :) The Flyers know they can't let him/them camp out in front of the net for as long as him/they want. IMO, the Flyers are doing exactly what they need to do.
Players that camp out in front of the net have been getting slashed, crosschecked, etc. for a long long time. It's always been a part of the game. I realize the league has started calling some of that tighter in recent years, but they've continued to allow more aggression in front of the net than anywhere else on the ice. The Flyers are pushing that envelope each game to see how far they can take it. IMHO, there are, and should be two unwritten standards for penalties; those in front of the net and those elsewhere on the ice.
It could also be an East/West Conference thing. The competing for territory in the slot seems more commonplace in the Eastern Conference, as is cycling around the boards (meaning chip in, and battle for possession via cycling - not cycling passes per se). It seems the West doesn't play those styles as much and it's more of a transition game. Again, I don't watch a ton of Western Conference games, so I could be wrong.

Congrats to the Hawks on the win....let's hope they can keep it up in Philly. Really enjoyed watching the defense control both sides of the puck.

I was actually being somewhat "tongue in cheek", Joel. As a player, i miss the days when D-men could defend that area in front of the net. And Pronger is one of the best at it. It's just too bad for the Flyers that he can't play 60 minutes a game. ;)

Ain't that the truth, no matter whose team he's on. Laviolette may try though! :r
Coburn has done an admirable job being their 2nd big tough defenseman, but he doesn't compare to Pronger (he did look very good last night though).

I think the Hawks have enough depth at D as it is!
Although he had a solid season this year, Coburn can be frustrating during the regular season (especially last year (08-09), when I thought he was only average). But it seems he picks it up during the post season every year.

Fortunately for the Hawks, Niemi let in one less goal than the Flyers' goalies in each game. :)

Tonight I think its all about penalties. I think the Flyers won't be able to control themselves, and spend a lot of time in the box. The hawks will need to convert PP's. If the Hawks can weather the storm in period 1, control the puck, and stay out of trouble, they will win. Easier said than done I believe:D

Looks like your analysis was off.
Not only did the Flyers not take too many Penalites, they were the ones who capatalized on Hossa and Byfuglys slashing penalties while killing their penalties. Byfugly actually hurt them more then helped them tonight. Two penalties one resulting in a PPG.
In all honesty I was glad to see the Flyers win this game and make this a series. They got hosed in game one on a play that should have been blown dead because the puck touched the player on the bench which seconds later resulted in a goal. That game should have went to OT and been anyones game. I found it funny how no one wants to talk about that little gift when it resulted in the game winner.
Game 2 was a 1 goal game in which Philly outplayed the Hawks but Niemi saved the day. Game 3 was a 1 goal game flyers. Take out getting hosed in game 1 and you have an even series. Take out Niemi standing on his head in game 2 to save the day and the Hawks could be down 3-0 in this series orit could in fact be 2-1 flyers if they had not gotten hosed in game 1. I said before the series started Philly was going to give the Hawks everything they could handle.
Sorry but a good nuetral take is needed in this thread. The Hawks are lucky to be up 2-1. Yes lucky because they got lucky that the play was not blown dead as it should have been in game 1. Philly out played the Hawks in game 2 but Niemi saved the day. I really think this one could go the distance. The Hawks also showed fustration tonight taking retaliation penalties. That happens a lot when a team is getting pushed around.
All I can say is boys looks like we got us a series and I am very glad we do. Before the Habs series I said the Flyers would win and give the Hawks a run for their money. :=:

I got REAL tired of hearing 'flyers should have been called on that'.
Seems the refs did everything in their power to give this game to the flyers, and it worked.
Officiating in these finals is horrible. virtually every hawk gets an elbow in the face on contact. Pronger should have been called on the cross check BEFORE buff slashed the stick.
It goes on and on.

I got REAL tired of hearing that too...being it was coming from an ex-Blackhawk. All I can say to your entire post is :r and Waaaaaaah!
There were several non-calls against the Flyers last night. Of course, I realize I am looking through orange colored glasses, where Blackhawk fans are looking through red ones. I know it's hard, especially this time of year, but if it's possible to watch the series being neutral (and without the sound and Olczyk's commentary) I believe it's been pretty fair.
Did anyone honestly think Carcillo's hit should have been a penalty for charging? The puck was right there and he made a play. IMHO, if you did, the red glasses were too tinted. Even Olczyk said he didn't think it was charging (of course he still try to say there should have been a slashing penalty, but...whatever). That being said, I'm not complaining about the call. I'm just using it as an example of the other side of the coin. Non-calls both ways...bad calls both ways.
Personally, I love it! And I think the Flyers do too. Watching Byfugly (like that nic :tu) and many of his teammates whine to the refs is great for the Flyers. Hopefully it's taking them out of their game a little bit. The fact that the fans are whining too....that's just icing on the cake!

No doubt they *could* have called a penalty. If they did, I don't think Pronger would have *****ed about it. I wouldn't have. But they *could* have also called a high stick on Toews later in the game. Briere didn't let it effect him. Or did that non-call not count? ;)
*where I say could, some may say should. Not every infraction on the ice is called a penalty though. :2

I only remember seeing one replay of the hit, but I want to say he left his feet, hence the charging call.
The refs have been quite laid back on penalties but we do have to remember it's A) the playoffs and B) the finals. Playoff hockey, especially SCF hockey, is called differently than the regular season. The little things, slashes, picks and interference are easier to get away with - Pronger has almost perfected this - in the playoffs when the refs swallow their whistles.
There have been missed calls for both sides, but it's more noticeable with the Flyers, who play more of a clutch and grab obstruction style ("old time hockey") than the Hawks.

The new rules are supposed to prevent this, but just like the Red Wings, the flyers are now getting away with it. Its not whining, its a fact. They get away with it.
Old time hockey is not glamorous or something to reminisce about, it was embarrassing. The broad street bullies are one of the reasons hockey to this day is not taken seriously. People who know nothing about the game see Slapshot and hear people talking about the 'good ol days' and think that is what hockey is like today.
The flyers *still* have that mindset and now the officials are letting them get away with it.
I am not a Hawks homer, I won't defend point by point every infraction, but there is clearly a double standard when it comes to what each team is allowed to get away with, and its just hurting the game of hockey.

Joel, I absolutely agree that calls get missed all the time, both ways. I just think Pronger gets away with more than most. Here was an article I found on web today. Sorry for the "homer bias", but I have been waiting 40+ years for this. :r
PHILADELPHIA -- Dustin Byfuglien found out the hard way his matchup with Chris Pronger is lopsided in the Flyers' favor in one important area: Byfuglien gets no respect. Pronger gets too much.
If he didn't know that before, he knows now. Byfuglien tangled with Pronger in front of Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton midway through the second period of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, as he had done throughout the game and the series.
But this time Pronger showed who's boss. Pronger pushed. Byfuglien pushed back. Pronger lost his stick, raised his arms and cried for a call -- and got it.
''Blackhawk penalty, No. 33, Dustin Byfuglien, two minutes for slashing at 9:31.''
Twenty-four seconds later, Scott Hartnell scored to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
A lesson learned. In previous battles against the Canucks and Sharks, Byfuglien has done the push-and-shove thing.
That Pronger is better than anybody Byfuglien has faced previously isn't the issue. It's that Pronger is a former Hart and Norris trophy winner, a 15-year veteran headed for the Hall of Fame who has earned more respect from the officials than he probably has from the rest of the NHL.
And he takes full advantage of it to get away with more than he should, Hawks winger Patrick Kane said before Wednesday's game.
''The refs probably know it, too,'' Kane said. ''But he's been in the league a long time. He gets away with whacks here and there that he probably shouldn't. But I guess for playing in the league that long [veterans] deserve that. But at this time of year, it really shouldn't matter.''
But it does. Pronger ran roughshod over the Hawks in Game 3 with impunity, elbowing Jonathan Toews and nailing Kris Versteeg as the Flyers avoided a 3-0 series deficit with a 4-3 overtime victory.
Kane agreed that Wednesday night's game was a good example of Pronger getting away with more than he should. But he had no gripes about that or anything else the Flyers did physically in the game. Pronger isn't the most well-liked player in the league by a long shot. He's an engaging guy who can be prickly, surly and arrogant when the mood strikes him. But on the ice, he's only doing what anyone else would do -- and should do -- if given the opportunity.
''That's the way hockey's played,'' Kane said. ''There was probably one big hit where my helmet came off. Besides that I don't know if they had any big licks on me.
''They're obviously going to finish their checks. But we can't worry about that. If you're worried about that, you're not going to be playing hockey.''
Toews also had no issue with Pronger.
''I mean, that's his job,'' he said. ''So he's obviously going to keep getting better as the series goes along. To us, he's just another guy out there. We want to focus on him and make his job tougher. But we know what to expect from him.''
Byfuglien had other issues in this one. He lost his cool when he tussled with the Flyers' Kimmo Timonen after the horn and was called for roughing.
''Buff is pretty composed,'' Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said when asked if Pronger ''got under the skin'' of Byfuglien. ''Buff has been a factor and something they have to be concerned about. He'll continue to battle and persevere, and do what he has to do.''
If the easy-going Byfuglien has reached his breaking point, it's an issue for the Hawks, because Pronger and his teammates will be sure to smell blood in the water. Emboldened by their overtime victory, they'll step up their attempts to push the Hawks over the edge.
''It's part of it. Every team is trying to do that to us,'' Toews said. ''Maybe we took too many penalties, and that's maybe what cost us the game. We'll be smarter. We don't want to be that team -- we've said all along we're going to be smart.
''We've seen teams take stupid penalties against us. But we're not going to let them suck us into playing like that.''
They kind of did in Game 3. It's up to the Hawks and Byfuglien to respond like a championship team should.

Very entertaining game. Listening to the 3rd period on XM on the way home from work last night, the Chicago announcer kept apologizing for being a homer, but said, "I don't want to sound like a homer, but if I see something I am going to call it." He must have said this or something similar to it every time Pronger was on the ice. Pronger must have gotten away with a cross-check, slash, interference, and holding about 10 times in the 3rd period alone according to the Chicago announcer. Now reading what those who watched it say, he might not have been exaggerating.

Clowe I can see going to the Habs. He has always just seemed to not really like it here. Nabby I dont know maybe the KHL,maybe he cashes in on a struggling team. Given his playoff issues and salary I just dont see the Sharks wanting him back.
Price. Ugggggh we better get some stay at home defensive players. With Blake likely not returning and Nabokov being gone there will be a little room. If Patty leaves I wont be happy. That bridge may have been burned though. I hope not. I see him staying on the west coast though.

The question in my mind will be if the Refs call the Flyers and if the Hawks can keep their composure and not take the retaliation penalties they have been doing.
Good luck to both teams, I am glad this series has lived up to what I thought it would be. Both teams have won games based on their strengths.

Tom, it seems there is an unlimited supply of pics with Byfugly hamming it up for you to choose from. I think I like him less and less each time you post a pic! :r
As for the game last night, the Hawks came out ready to play, they out hustled the Flyers and had, by far, their best game of the series . Hopefully the Flyers can force game 7. I have confidence they can.
And where are all of the "The Flyers are getting all of the calls, why weren't the obvious penalties called? The NHL is fixing it so they can win!" people? Maybe the third time Briere gets highsticked in the face will be the charm.

Refs definitely missed the high-stick on Briere, Joel....just as they missed the one on Seabrook. Hope Briere is OK and ready to go Wednesday....should be a barnburner.
I think it is cool the way Canucks, Sharks, and now Flyer fans hate Byfuglien so much. You hate the players that make a difference....probably why the Hawks fans hate Pronger, because he is a difference maker most nights.

You are absolutely correct on that Tom. One of my least favorite opposing players of all time was Matthew Barnaby. I couldn't stand the dude, but always said that if he were a Flyer he'd be one of my favorite players. One of the best at his role, at least when playing against the Flyers.
IMO, most of time, the booing an opposing player receives should be taken as a sign of respect. I actually smile when I hear the boos raining down on Pronger. I'm guessing he does too. The exception to this would be someone like Marty Mcsorley after his cheapshot on Brashear or Dale Hunter after his on Turgeon.
And, FWIW, I think Byfugly is a very imposing force on the ice, and most definitely respect his game. It's his antics that grow tiresome for me. :2

I think part of the reason that I like it so much is this, Joel: My biggest complaint about Byfuglien the last couple seasons is that he seems to play with no emotion. No smiles, no anger....nada. This playoff season he has showed emotion, and his play has been heads and shoulders better. So as far as I am concerned, the more he acts the goof, the better off the Hawks are going to be. :)

That makes a lot of sense, Tom. I can think of a lot of professional athletes that have come through Philadelphia that needed a spark of some kind in their game and if glimpses of a spark were shown, their game seemed to elevate. Crossing sports, but McNabb was always more relaxed and confident the goofier he acted. Iverson always excelled when he had an attitude. Jimmy Rollins always pisses opposing team's fans off with his cockiness, but the cockier he is, the better the whole team seems to play (trust me, they're missing him right now).
I guess what I'm saying is, being you're a fan of the Hawks, I see exactly where you are coming from. :tu But like fans from opposing teams of the three athletes I mentioned above, I still don't like the guy! :r :r

Hang on there Sparky. I dont know many Sharks fans that hate Byfugly. In fact at the shop last night a few guys said he was a critical player. What most agreed on was the SCRIPTED goal celebration was lame. The same pose, always going to his left, and always ending at the same spot on the board. True celebrations are okay, scripted celebrations where you have it planned out are lame and shows a childish mentality. Like Terrel Ownes etc. To think out how your going to celebrate a goal is strange to me and shows it is not comming from the heart. Instead it is being done to generate a response. Last I checked hockey wasn the WWE and we didnt need the villian.
As to the Canucks celebrations I will say the player I want on my team is the one who wins with class. Not the one who acts like a child jumping around or posing to the opponents crowd yelling neener neener suck on that. Thats just not how I was raised and damn sure not how I am raising my son. You win with class, you let your play on the ice or field leave the mark, not your antics after you win or score.
I know the homers will likely pour in and say there is nothing wrong with a celebration and to that I say fine. Go post your vids again and this time I ask you to find me the scripted repetative goal celebration by one of those players. The same one done over and over and over and over and over again in the same manner. I think instead you will see emotions from the heart. Score goal check, turn and skate to the left check, lift right leg check, lift arms wide check, glide into the glass with back to it and await teamates check. Well except for when he first did it in vancouver you have to add in taunt the crowd.
Still love me some Hawks, and think Byfugly is a good oldschool grinder except for the antics after the goals. I keep saying it to my son, but he doesnt get it yet, "act like you have been there before."

of the 5 games so far...i thought the last game was the first time that chicago dominated philly like they have everyone else throughout the playoffs...despite average tending.if the hawks have truly "found themselves"(and play like they have since the begginning of the playoffs)...the cup will be presented tonight.
turning point of game 5..buff's monumental(and clean)hit on pronger...totally changed the way pronger played the rest of the game.buff earned more room to play(and it showed on the scoresheet)...pronger was looking for payback(and it showed on the scoresheet (as penalty minutes and +/-)).
i watched pronger daily for a year when he played for the oilers...never seen him hit that solidly.
8 1/2 hours to go...part of me wants chicago to win tonight...part of me wants to see this continue to 7 games...best nhl playoff year in a decade.

Game 7 here we come. I'd like to see Carcillo back in the lineup again tonight. I know he's a wild card and takes stupid penalties. But at home they can match him up selectively to bang up duncan and seabrook a bit, and he adds a ton of energy to the flyers and adds that edge that they need tonight. And I agree on chicago clearly outplaying philly in game 5, should be a good one tonight.

Pah, that was only ugly because the media made it out to be. Show me a married man that hasn't realized "a happy wife is a happy life" and I'll show you a man who's either lying or about to get divorced.
And if that's what the Tribune was referring to they might want to make it a bit more obvious considering; a) that was 4 years and 2 teams ago now, and b) it has nothing to do with the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals.

Woohoo. My "hometown" team actually won something!
I'd love to be able to attend the celebration on Friday, but I have class until 1.
There is plenty of celebrating going on tonight downtown though. I don't know if I'll get much sleep unless the honking stops at some point. At least I don't have gunshots like some friends have reported. I don't believe them though, guns are illegal in Chicago, so they must be hearing things.

TORONTO -- The NHL's competition committee agreed Friday on a new head-shot rule for next season.
The committee, made up of players and GMs, met for four-plus hours at the NHL's Toronto office and ironed out the language for the new rule, which still needs approval from the NHLPA's executive board on Monday and from the board of governors on Thursday.
The new rule, which was first recommended at the GM meetings in March, would impose a five-minute penalty for a blindside hit to the head, with an automatic game misconduct. The league will also consider supplemental discipline.
The players tweaked some of the language in the new rule proposed by the GMs, but in the end both sides agreed to move forward with it.

But it's all about "What have I done for you lately" in the NHL. Havlat didn't do chit for 2 years with the Hawks, then had a career year in his contract year. After signing a nice fat contract with the Wild, he took it down two notches again.

When my son got his pic taken with it, at the Nike/Bauer Invitational in Chicago last year, they had it set up like one of those photo booths, it was completely hidden from public view, and to get to it, you had to pay for the picture.
They allowed us to go in and snap our own pics as well, but only after we paid, and they told my son not to touch the cup!

Hate to see a cup winning team broke apart but they knew what they were getting into before the season started. They built to win, they won, now its time to take it apart.
Just like the Penguins, keeping the core group together is paramount.
And just like Halak, getting rid of who they did was perfect timing, their value could not have been higher.
I just wish my Penguins would get something done. The East is getting real good and the Pens haven't done much.

I was gonna buy a Sopel jersey as well:hm
I've got one for sale...
Just kidding, I will still proudly wear my Sopel jersey. He was a great defensive player and one of my favorites. And its probably a fairly rare jersey too lol.

Hawks parted ways with Colin Fraser to the Oilers for a 6th round pick.
Sharks signed Marleau and Pavelski to 4 year deals, good move for them.

Rumor is Pavelski took a "hometown discount" to stay with the Fish.

I like Pavelski a lot...I'd like him even better in the Red and Black. :)

I like him a lot also and hope he captains the team eventually. Dude is clutch and has ice water in the veins. when the boys got to meet the players this year he was one of the guys who posed for pics with any boy who wanted talked to them and signed every thing they gave to him. He really stood out among the sharks players as one who really cared that the kids had fun. He definitely comes from good stock and or has his head in the right place. Hoping Micah gets his number this year.

So much better :D
From espn.com
Marleau, who was eligible to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, will receive $27.6 million in the four-year deal. Pavelski, who would have been a restricted free agent, will be paid $16 million.
P.S NHL Draft tonight :wo

the B's seem to be shaking things up.
Possible Savard to the Sens for Spezza the B's will have to add someone else in the deal to match up with salary.
They are also Actively shopping Tim Thomas
They have obtained Nathan Horton from the Panthers.
I hope they don't handcuff themselves salary wise
But they did get rid of Wiedman:tu

Some of my friends drove through Chris Pronger's hometown on the way to a fishing trip in Canada this weekend.

Notice the Blackhawks stickers on Pronger's chest and crotch. :r
Congrats Tom on getting your photo with the cup. I envy you. Even though it has been in Detroit quite a few times in the past 10 years, I have yet to see it up close and in person, The closest I've gotten was at the parades as it was hoisted by the team captain.
