I got done with Surface Detail, then finished Matter, and now I'm about 60% of the way through Hydrogen Sonata.
That'll be the end of the Culture Series by Iain Banks. I'll be a sad panda.

On Prime Day I bought Kindle Unlimited, so I'll be rooting through all that stuff to find nuggets for the next year. I hope it was worthwhile, it looks like it is.

Not really reading but listening to Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship. Loving it!

I bet I'd like Pirate Hunters, Steve. :tu

I finished Hydrogen Sonata, read a few shorts by Hugh Howey, Beacon 23, I believe.
Now I'm reading Death World by BV Larson. It's another sci-fi series that I've enjoyed.
It's not the greatest, but it's an easy read. Larson's vocabulary is about a 2 compared to Banks, if that.
He does write a nice picture, but the series is getting a bit soap-opery with this book.
I hope it straightens out shortly. :tu

I don't get much time these days to read, so I have really been tearing up the audio books. I think this was one of the best books I've read/listened to in quite a while.

Just finished "Catching Fire: How Cooking made us Human" by Richard Wrangham.

The book presents the theory that it was cooking, more than speech or tool making, that accounts for the transition from homo habilus and erectus to human. As a corollary it makes hash of the current paleo or raw diet claims and cites evidence that our bodies have in fact evolved in specific ways to reap the benefits of a cooked diet. Generously footnoted if you"re academically minded and a pleasurable read even if you're not. A great book for anyone interested in evolution or anthropolgy.

"Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House" written by Steve Stoliar.
He was a student at UCLA and he finagled himself a job as Groucho Marx's secretary. This was near the end of Groucho's life, so most of the anecdotes are bittersweet.

Here is one of my favorites: A newspaper reporter interviewed Groucho on Groucho's 85th birthday. He asked Groucho, "How does 85 feel?" Groucho replied, "69 felt better!"

So, I went back to #1 in the Star Force Series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/69279-star-force).
I read all 12 of them. All good, except maybe 9. It was a bit slow.
For wasting space's sake...
Swarm
Extinction
Rebellion
Conquest
Army of One
Battle Station
Empire
Annihilation
Storm Assault
The Dead Sun
Outcast
Exhile
Demon Star.
And thus ends the series.

I just started Assault Troopers, Extinction Wars Book 1.
New author, I forget his name. So far, not bad.

I'm reading a Jasper T. Scott series.
I'm just about done with #5. The series has been pretty good, the author has pulled a lot of decent ideas out of his ass to keep it going, but he's worn out the characters and has way too many in play.
He desperately needs to kill off a bunch of them. At this point it's obvious they're just dragging along in case he needs them for a later book.
I don't mind being set up for the umpteenth book in a series, but at least be opaque about it, I figure. :)

I'm reading several things on the kindle but thought that some here might be interested in my latest e-book selection. It is by one of my colleagues here at Portland State, Melanie Mitchell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_Mitchell, http://web.cecs.pdx.edu/~mm/). If any of you have read Godell, Escher, Bach: The Eternal Golden Braid, know that her PhD advisor authored that book.

Complexity: a Guided Tour (http://www.amazon.com/Complexity-Guided-Tour-Melanie-Mitchell/dp/0199798109) is very well written (at least so far) and targeted at the non-technical audience. I've always been impressed with Melanie's clear communications style and am anxious to see it in action in a setting for the non-technical. And in this area, I am definitely the non-technical.

If you are interested in artificial life, machine learning, and such, this is likely a very good book. I'm just starting in so will have more to say in a week or so.

Looks good I'm going to pick that up for my nook. I wonder what it's like to spend that much time with Hofstadter? I don't know if I'd get smarter by osmosis or if I'd burn out what little brain I do have trying to keep up with him!
Your colleague and Hofstadter must think along the same lines I see she wrote a book called "Analogy-Making as Perception" in '93 and that's pretty close to the subject matter of Hofstatder's latest.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. A Russian fairy tale set in around the year 1100. Russia officially has become Christian but the old pagan spirits still exist. A young girl, daughter of an exiled noblewoman who died giving birth to her, has inherited powers that allow her to contend with forces set against her family. Even has an evil stepmother, what more can you ask?

Worth picking up? I've almost pulled the trigger on that one.

Finished "Becoming Odyssa" and now onto Jack Kerouac's "Into the Wild."It's pretty good, but the style he used is different from the way he usually writes. It reads more like a children's book in that he is telling the stories in a very simple, but funny way. It took me a couple of stories to start enjoying the style. If you have been reading the Iron Druid books by Kevin Hearne, then it is good background for that series. It's a good quick read that was hard to put down. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't what I expected.

While I know none of you manly types are sissy tea drinkers, j/k, this novel's backstory treats with pu'er tea from the wild mountains of China where it may be plucked from a 400-year-old tree by Chinese minority tribespeople and sold for $hundreds or $thousands an ounce. The story itself follows a minority girl who has to give up her child for adoption to an American couple due to her tribes mores and traditions. Lisa See is that good a writer that a couple of times the guy next door must have been chopping onions, dang him all to heck.

Montalbano is a sharp dresser and a lover of fine foods, who has to deal with Italian bureaucracy and culture to solve his cases. There are smugglers, mafia, swindlers, and a recurring cast of quirky supporting characters including his girlfriend who lives hours away in another city and who he is always arguing with over the phone due to misunderstandings. These are very witty and amusing books and great fun.

I'm halfway through Into The Water, the second novel by Paula Hawkins who wrote the majorly popular The Girl On The Train. The premise is the "difficult women" who have drowned in the river running beside a small English town over the last couple hundred years; now two women recently have drowned, one a suicide and then the next perhaps a murder. The story is intruiging and the writing is excellent but stylistically it's a bit tiring: every chapter is one of the ten characters' inner thoughts and point of view that may clash with another's, and I have to keep thinking, who's this person, how do they relate? Overall very good though, and I haven't yet figured out "who dunnit" or even if anything actually was "dun".

Reading the Virgil Flowers books by John Sandford.

I've read all of them, the "Prey" novels, and the "Kidd" ones, too. I don't think there was a single one I didn't enjoy.

The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson. Very good, but at 1000 pages I should get credit for three books, right? Plus it's only book one of a trilogy? Mama Mia!

Just finished Hounded by Kevin Hearne and started in on book 2 of the series Hexed. I'm re-reading the Iron Druid series while waiting for the newest book in the series to be released on July 11.

Tilted World, Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly. A novel of the 1927 Mississippi flood, the greatest natural disaster in US history. Bootleggers, revenuers, murderers, it's got it all.
