Just started Under the Dome by Stephen King. Brand new hardcover that came out last month. Over 1000 pages. SHould keep me busy for a week or two.
It's a fast read-very entertaining.
I finally finished New York and half way through The War that Killed Achilles but I had a yen for something fluffy so I am reading Four to Score-Stephanie Plum.

New York by Edward Rutherford-big historical novel ala Michener. I read London, Sarum, The Forest and his Ireland sagas...all span the centuries.
I read the first chapter of Sarum (the part with Hwll the caveman) my freshman year in high school and hated it, probably because it was for a class I hated. Along the way I picked up a used copy of the full book, and about a year ago I sat down to read it. I loved it.

2009 is over and I finished off the year with 72 books. Still shy of my goal of 100. The last book completed was The Golden City by John Twelve Hawkes completing his series of the Travelers. Good series but the last one was disappointing. I was looking through the list and thought I would post the stand outs for this year.
The best books for 2009
Drood, by Dan Simmons
I was fascinated by this book and it sparked an interest(or renewed interest) in Dickens and Victorian detective stories. It was one of four books that received the top 5 star rating on my list.
The other three books are by the same author
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest by Stieg Larsson
What a shame this author passed away after writing this series. The best mystery series I have ever read. If you haven't read them, please do. The titles are funky but the content is excellent.
Close runner up with four and a half stars
Darkness Take My Hand by Dennis Lehane
I love it when I find a new author. When I started with Lehane I couldn't stop and read all his books but one. I haven't read Shutter Island because when i do I won't have anymore to read...wah!
There were a few stinkers-books that got only two stars, but one book stands out with only one star...The Shroud of the Thwacker by Chris Elliott. Worse book I finished this year.
On to 2010. The fist book is Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell-almost done with this one-very entertaining writer. The book is about Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley.

I am reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. It is historical fiction about Thomas Cromwell, assisstant to Wolsey and Chancellor after Thomas More. The writing style is very intriguing. This book has won a lot of awards and critical praise. i am enjoying it so far. It is a period of English history I love to read about.

Hadrian and the Triumph of Rome -- Anthony Everitt. (sort of rough going so far, though interesting at points)
Anna Karenina -- Leo Tolstoy. (Pevear and Volokhonsky translation -- smooth as a Davidoff.)
the Heart of Shobogenzo -- Dogen. Very challenging. I think I understand about half of this, and that half I think I need to re-read.
Holiday airplane reading: Somebody Owes Me Money -- Donald Westlake. Breezy and funny, but not the best Westlake on the shelf.

Reading a few autobiographies and biographies right now. Two about poker people.
Just finished up Check-raising the Devil which is Mike Matusow's autobiography. It was a quick read, but it provided a lot of insight into what he's been through, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Just started One of a Kind, which is the story of Stuey Ungar, also eye opening and a very interesting read.
And the third one that I am reading is General Jimmy Doolittle's autobiography I Could Never be so Lucky Again, which is a great read as well.
Definitely keeping myself busy reading lately.

It's been a while since I read this, but the details that stick in my memory are his description of Rehnquist's poker games and the friendship between Scalia and Ginsburg. Political commentary is almost unavoidable with cases like Bush v. Gore, but the fact that Ginsburg and Scalia are socially very close says a lot about the nature of the court. A good read.

Black Powder War by Naomi Novik - third in a series (5-6 books so far?) - psuedo-historical fiction set during the Napoleonic wars, but with dragons. Very well written and engaging.
Was also reading some Brian Lumley - the first few Necroscope books. Pretty good, definitely entertaining, and very bloody.

Need some recommendations... I am going on a 15 day cruise and want to take some books with me. Right now I have Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series.
I like epic fantasy (Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, etc.), science fiction (Heinlein, Asimov, Card, Brin) fantasy (McAffery, Card, Butcher). (Basically, I read for escape and entertainment, not education.)
The catch is that any recommendations need to be available on the Kindle.
Thanks!

I read Mistborn recently and thought it was good. I struggled a little with the second book but the third more than made up for it. If you haven't read it yet, I'd suggest Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy (Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest). I thought it was fantastic, my favorite series to date. I'm not sure that it meets your epic requirement because the danger is the destruction on one land, not the entire world (at least not in this series anyway).

I know some people hate this series, but I went from R.A. Salvatore to Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I would recommend it. Sadly, I haven;t read much fantasy since I got to college. I'd second the Drizzt series like The Dark Elf Trilogy, or The Icewind Dale Trilogy.

I went from Farseer right into Liveship Traders (Ship of Magic, Mad Ship, and Ship of Destiny). The series is written by Robin Hobb and takes place within the same world just a different location. I'm about to start on book three shortly and I am enjoying the series very much.

I'm curious what you think of The Wheel of Time so far? I've been considering reading it but I'm a little worried about getting started. Some say the latter books get very dull up until Brandon Sanderson took it over after Jordan's death. Others say that the series is fantastic and well worth the read of 10+ books.
The only other series I have invested that much time in was The Sword of Truth at 11 books. At times it seemed to drone on and on but overall I was glad that I read it.

I like epic fantasy. By epic I mean, big, complex plot, lots of story lines, lots of characters and depth, many books. I think Wheel of Time is one of the best if not the best in that category.
If you start now, you might finish with book twelve by the time books 13 and 14 are out :)
(Sanderson has stated that books 13 (Towers of Midnight) and 14 (A Memory of Light) will be out much faster than Jordan typically released his books -- 2 years. Right now 13 is due out in October)

Jordan's writing is very immersive. Sometimes that means reading a page or six about the latest fashions in Ebou Dar. Also, as the series went on, it picked up sub-plots involving dozens of minor characters from the various factions. Sanderson (working partially from Jordan's notes) has started to wrap some of these
up in The Gathering Storm.
The only other series I have invested that much time in was The Sword of Truth at 11 books. At times it seemed to drone on and on but overall I was glad that I read it.
I got as far as Faith Of The Fallen in SoT. Someday I'll have to reread the series. Lots of interesting parallels: Rand as The Dragon Reborn/Richard as a war wizard, Moiraine/Kahlan, Aes Sedai/Sisters of the Light, Seanchan/Jagad, the Stone of Tear/Stone of Tears.
(Sanderson has stated that books 13 (Towers of Midnight) and 14 (A Memory of Light) will be out much faster than Jordan typically released his books -- 2 years. Right now 13 is due out in October)

So far it's great. I was looking for a series that had a lot of content and would take awhile to complete. I like to immerse myself in the author's world and so far I can't complain. Just finished "Parasite Rex" by Carl Zimmer. Fantastic book if a little creepy at times. Zimmer is an excellent science writer and this book about parasites (who apparently make up the majority of species) is written for the layman. The author has a blog I like and one of my favorite features is this (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/loom/science-tattoo-emporium/). He asked one day in his blog if anyone had a science tattoo and the pictures started coming in so he set up a space for them and adds a new one every Friday.
Now I'm on to "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Pretty dark as you'd expect from him.

Reading James McPherson's Ordeal By Fire: The Civil War and Reconstruction. Going off to Graduate school in History at Clemson and Ordeal by Fire is one of the preeminent Civil War works of the century so I figured I better read it :tu
Awesome book! I had the pleasure of meeting McPherson a few times and hes a really interesting guy to talk to.

Courage and Honor, an Ultramarines novel by Graham Mcneill. Amazing writing, though a bit quiet compared to Storm of Iron, the last one I read, which was basically BATTLEBATTLEBATTLEBATTLEBATTLE the whole way through. The 40K universe makes for some good reading.

The Great Bridge by David McCullough. I wrote a term paper about the Brooklyn Bridge during a college urban history class. Now, I understand why the professor didn't seem all that impressed.

Right now I'm reading some of Edgar Allen Poe and a little H.P. Lovecraft. I also read lots of fan fiction, but honestly some of that barely gets past the third grade level, but it's an addiction

You play any of the RPG games?

You mean any of the tabletop games for Lovecraft? I've seen a few, but I have never had the pleasure though I'm sure anything with shogoth in it would be a welcome change from D&D

Currently reading "Never Tell Our Business To Strangers" by Jennifer Mascia.
Beginning was decent, but it's starting to drag out. Should be able to finish it off tonight though.

The Road is a good one... Read that a little while ago. A little slow, but I liked it. Never did see the movie...

I'm reading Magician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga) by Raymond Feist
I do most of my reading while smoking cigars on the back deck. Doesn't get much better than that!

I guess I should have mentioned that I like the book so far. I'm one who's been searching for something comparable to Tolkien for some time. This book tries... we'll see...

"Germania: In Wayward Pursuit of the Germans and Their History" by Simon Winder. It has lots of lore and ancient history about Germany that I never knew before, and now some aspects of German culture (and certain events between the late 1800s and 1945) are beginning to fall into place.
