Outside the "throne room";) I'm still catching up on my Tom Clancy with Executive Orders.
I can't afford the cost of new books right now and, most depressingly, Buffalo's library system has taken a huge financial hit due to the local and national economies so I take full advantage of the various "library sales" & fundraiser book sales to stock my library. Then, the ones I probably won't read again I donate back.
In my inner sanctum I'm reading As I've Seen It: Wide Right and Other..., written by Buffalo's Channel 2 Sports Director, Ed Kilgore. It's a pseudo-memoir that spans his 40-year career covering Buffalo's pro football/hockey/basketball teams. Being a Buffalo transplant, it's kind of a history lesson for me. I did not realize that a couple of years ago, at 62, Kilgore climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I read this based on a recently read short story. The author has a pretty good style. It's a tween book targeted at young adults and adults. I liked the story, until the ending.
The ending is a cliff-hanger; the author could have done a better job wrapping some things up, instead of forcing us to wait for a second book...

Battlecry of Freedom. It's a long, drawn out book on the Civil War. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. No idea who the author is, I went past that page a long time ago. :)
I just started this book tonight. Author's name is James M. McPherson. At 904 pages, it certainly is a tome. I don't know that it's fair to call it, 'long and drawn out,' though. Shelby Foote's, The Civil War: A Narrative is 2,968 pages! Now that one's going to require a few more cigars! Coronas gigantes or similar! :D
Battle Cry of Freedom won McPherson a Pulitzer Prize in 1989 so I'm expecting it to be amaaazing. What did you think of it, Scott?

I'm on the Second Shift right now, Michael. Read the first six books last week. Funny that the writing isn't all that dynamic, but it makes me want to read it constantly. Howey can really paint a picture, or at least set up the canvas for your head to fill in the blanks. I like that, it makes the reading a lot more engaging.
If you enjoyed these books, I think you'd like DJ Molles "The Remaining" series if you haven't read them. It's a zombie series, but short on zombie and long on characters and post-apocalyptic life.

I could have sworn that Dust was already released, but Hugh's website (http://www.hughhowey.com/reviews/) says it's only 22% done. I think it's because I saw a "reading order" posted in a few Amazon selections.Sand is the next installment in what's supposed to be another 3 part series, I forget what the 3rd was gonna be named. He's farther along with Sand, if you can believe that. (It's only half as long as Dust, so I guess it makes sense?)
I saw a Silo story written by WJ Davies, saved it in my Amazon wishlist to make sure I at least read the sample. It's called "The Runner (http://www.amazon.com/The-Runner-Silo-Story-ebook/dp/B00B2QZH68/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1361831765&sr=1-1&keywords=dust+hugh+howey).
If you take a look at it let me know if it's worthwhile, will ya brother?

I started reading it and put it down when the gay cowboy thing started developing. I'll pick it up again when I'm not as bigoted.
Then I picked up Old Man's War by John Scalzi. You'd love it. I flew right through and and I'm tearing through Ghost Brigades, which is the next installment.
I thought I liked Heinlein, then I really liked Neal Stephenson, then Hugh Howey, but Scalzi I really enjoy. Light humor, moves along, great imagination, the stories never stall for a second.
It's gonna take me awhile to get through all his books, but I'm very much looking forward to it!!!

Then I picked up Old Man's War by John Scalzi.
Old Man's War was fantastic. Ghost brigades is sitting in my kindle library waiting for me to start chugging along through.
But I had a gauntlet thrown down that has side tracked me. I was scoffed at for having not read the harry potter books. Followed by "You just wouldn't get it" (sarcastically, of course). So now I'm reading it and giving them a 20 minute play-by-play every day of what I read the night before.
I ALWAYS get the last laugh :D

How much of Tolkien have you read? It is full of names and information, so it is a little slow at the beginning until you get used to the names being thrown at you. It is not as intense as The Silmarillion but it does give great background to the Hobbit and Middle Earth Trilogy. I would say that I got hooked in by the 3rd chapter.

Michael, I just dug this thread out to suggest The Martian to you, I finished it the other night. I knew you'd like it. And what's even crazier is that right now I'm reading Wired. What are the odds?

Great book. I wish he wrote more sci-fi, but he only has one other title in that genre and it sounds sucky.

A combined edition of "The Prince" and "Discourses on Livy" by Niccolo Machiavelli.
My past history lessons (high school etc.) had treated Machiavelli as an advocate of amorality, if not the devil incarnate. Per Eric Hoffer's commentaries in "The Ordeal of Change" and other references, I now look at "The Prince" (his more commonly recognized work) as a sort of "demo reel" by a veteran of Renaissance politics, who was himself above reproach, had been put to pasture by a change of regime, and wanted more than anything to get back into the game.
