After reading a history of WWI, it was time for a little fiction. I'm a mystery fan and a very helpful lady at Borders suggested The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larson. Not one of my regular authors, never heard of him but what the heck, I was in the mood for something different.

Started it this morning with a pot of coffee and a nice Trini Coloniales. All of the Swedish names and locations was a little unusual. Interesting characters and after 80 pages I'm hooked. I'm eager to see where this thing goes.

A Drink Before the War was an excellent book for a first book in series. even better was the second Kenzie Gennaro book, Darkness Take My Hand. It was a great book. I can't wait to start the third book Sacred. First I have a library book to read. The State of Jones by Jenkins and Stauffer. A true account of a Mississippi man who was a Union sympathizer in the Civil War and his county that did not secede from the Union but formed its own state. Of course, the Confederacy disagreed with him.

Halberstam definitely has a political point of view. I think he overplays it and I'm not sure that I agree with his political premise in the first place. I'm nearly 300 pages into The Coldest Winter and he really hasn't written much about the war. But, I've read plenty about how MacArthur was a dork and Dean Acheson was the savior of the free world.

Cool cigar mention in My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, en iTouch...

“So the guy bought a case of expensive cigars,” he says, “and had them insured against fire for $15,000. Next thing you know, the insurance company gets a claim, saying all the cigars were lost in a series of small fires.”

“He smoked them?” I say, washing the soap out of Jesse’s hair.
Brian leans against the threshold of the door.

“Yeah. But the judge ruled that the company guaranteed the cigars as insurable against fire, without defining acceptable fire.”…

"So who subpoenaed you?” I ask Brian. “The defendant?”

“The prosecution. The insurance company paid out the money, and then had him arrested for twenty-four counts of arson.”…

“The judge threw out the case, right?”

“The judge sentenced him to twenty-four consecutive one-year terms,” Brian says.

I would attribute the additional reading to carrying the Kindle places that I would not have taken a book(s) and/or magazines. It is nice having a variety of reading materials at my fingertips.

Rather than carrying around a single magazine or single book, I have them all available to me. There is 4 GB of internal memory and I have 500 MB of PDF books, a variety of eBooks from Amazon, 3 magazines and 2 newspapers at my disposal (and I still have 3 GB available).

I am reading 3 at the moment.

A Case for Faith by Lee Strobel; is a really great read if you are open minded enough to look at things from both sides of the fence on religion. He is an ex atheist turned christian who is also an investigative reporter and interviews people from both sides in this page turner. I enjoyed it cover to cover.

Hinterlands by James Clemens, Book 2 of the Godslayer Chronicles; If you are a fantasy lover then I would recommend this series. I am revisiting this series for a 3rd time now and still enjoy it.

The Pirate King by R.A. Salvatore who is imho the king of fantasy lore and swordplay.
I am anxiously waiting for the new addition to this series in October!

Lone survivor is written by Marcus Latrell a former Nacy Seal. It is the story of a seal Recon team in Afghanistan. Mr. latrell is the only survivor of the team, as the title implies. One of the other members of the team. Navy Lt. Michale Murphy is a recipient of the Medal of Honor, he was the first recipient in Operation Endruing Freedom.

Albigensian heresy? The Cathars? (I just finished listening to a lecture series called "The Era of the Crusades"; aside from what I picked up listening to this on my commute I know very little about this time period, but it's fascinating stuff.) Toward the end of the series the lecturer mentions a few things about Frederick II, who sounds like quite a character. Do you have any reading recommendations for non-scholars?

If you want to read specifically about Cathars, then I recommend "The Yellow Cross" by Rene Weis. There is also "The Cathars" by Sean Martin. There are many "gossip" books about this period, some of which toss in the Templars and other groups in a weird mish-mash as well. For a broader view of the history of religious doctrine, I recommend Jaroslav Pelikan's "The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine", Volume 3, "The Growth of Medieval Theology (600-1300)" which is quite good. An interesting book on the modern interpretation of the middle ages is Noman Cantor's "Inventing the Middle Ages". The book "Europe in the High Middle Ages" by William Jordan is excellent.

This time period is popular with fiction writers, who seem to want to come across as historians, so one has to be quite careful. Good luck!

Note that just because I say a book is good doesn't mean that I think that it is easy to read or digest.

Just started Robert Jordan's "Fire's of Heaven". Again. This is the fifth book in his "Wheel of Time" series. Book 12, "The Gathering Storm" was just released so I am re-reading the series from the beginning. Again. :)

The series was supposed to be five books, then 8, then 12. The Robert Jordan died shortly after book 11 was published. A new author (Brandon Sanderson) was found to complete the series, and he is committed to finishing it in 14 (he said he could not get it all wrapped up in the 12 comitted to by Jordan).

The reason for my rereading is that it has been so long since book 11 was published (Jordan usually took 2+ years) that it is the only way for me to pick up the very complex plots and characters. I have pretty much reread the entire series for each new book (books average about 800+ pages).

One good thing is that Sanderson has committed to no more than a year between books for 13 and 14.

The best thing is that I can spend a nice afternoon or evening with these books and a fine cigar (or two), and maybe some scotch or tequila. :D

Yes! Definitely an issue! Have it on my iPhone, been reading a little here, a little there. Have finished part one, just a short way into second half. It tends to drag a bit IMO, and has several areas I have found myself skimming, due to verbosity on the author's part. Basic storyline is enjoyable, but I'm thinking I'm going to have problem finishing this one.

The War that Killed Achilles by Caroline Alexander. A close and insightful reading of the Iliad. Scholarly, but not academic. Good stuff.

Just started this one last night.
