pnoon, lump and JDB, what do y'all think about Andrea Dossena? I'm watching the 'pool v Marseille match and he's been so questionable at times, and then made a tackle on that may have saved a goal... but he just hasn't quite settled in English football.. can we have Riise back?

Dossena seems to think Skrtl's haircut will help him. I don't think many players coming from 8 years of Serie A/Italian football will settle straight into Premiership style football, but give him a dozen or so more appearances, I reckon he'll become, at the very least, capable!

Dossena is definitely no Skrtel or Riise. He's just to inconsistent. While, I can live with some inconsistency in a striker that will just seem to get lost during games, that is not trait I like to see with my backs.
I have been pretty pleased with Agger's performance since Skrtel went down. He has made a couple mistakes on defense but on the whole played well and gives added pressure on the offensive send as a bonus.

Arsenal didn't beat Chelsea alone.
2 bad offside calls on Kalou, a missed offside on Van Persie, a missed call on a corner for Chelsea, a free kick awarded for mystery contact at the end.

+ 1k. The way I always understood goalie shirts was to be as outrageous as possible to distract the shooter, as the corner of the eye catches the brightness and is similar to a target, instantly tries to shoot at it.. which is why you shoot with your head down... don't know how true it is, but hunting orange over pink any day of the week.

CNNSI reporting Torres out for the rest of the year with a hamstring injury. That's huge. I know the Poolies think I am going to make some sort of remark like "thanks for playing", but we all know we are days away from Rooney breaking a toe.

no no, rooney would have to score like 4-5 goals in 3 games to be close to breaking bones. Torres is just taking a longer break to give the recurring injury some time. Probably pretty smart. Benitez has a point that, he never gets injured except after or during the international break... but whatever... Keane needs to re-learn to finish, I'm certain he'll have 15 goals by the end of the PL season. I see Keane staying with Liverpool for maybe 2-3 years then retiring..

Club v. Country is an interesting debate. I think it should be up to the players. This garbage with 'fake' injuries, and Countries calling players in to verify said injuries is very stupid. Put it on the players and players alone to make the call if they are going to be called up.
The players know the fixture list. The players know where their standing is in the league. The players know what the 'club' is shooting for in terms of league/cup goals. The players also know what the country is shooting for in terms of WC qualification/Euro qualification. You are a big club player who the next week needs 3 points and it's a friendly.. Tell them you are staying home. Same difference you are 'out of the league' and it's WC qualification, your in.
Sure the country gets mad because the 'club' can dominate the players in terms of salary and make decisions for the players, but heres a little tip to the FA, they do. You can't stop that.. You need the players to be in top form to call them up, and I don't know many players who will do it for free.
I also think its amusing that the Club v. Country issues always come up the week of the games.. Its not like these international fixtures are planned 2 days before. We all have calendars. Player tells country 1 month out..I'm out for X.. Great, guess what, call up someone else.
Being asked to play "anything" for your country has to be one of the best feelings in the entire world. Let the players make the decisions..

Funnyman I think thats what made Jamie Carragher say he's done...
He wasn't going to make it into the National Squad over Rio, John Terry and Ashley Cole... just not going to happen, even though he's a great defender. He said, why waste my time setting the pine for England when I can focus on who pays me.. If Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry say "hey boss, I can't play CL final is coming up don't want to risk injury" I think that is fine. If the US National Teams coach called me up and said "we need a water boy" I'd jump at the chance... But sure playing for your country is great, but if the player doesn't want to... why make him...

But then.... World Cup and Continental International Qualifiers are held during regular season... if player like Lampard, Gerrard, Cole, Terry and other bigger players feel playing in the qualifiers is too risky, do you then leave them out of your squad for the out of season competition, playing a weaker side just because it's who you qualified with? If you take that route, you risk playing a substandard side who will fail in the final tournament, leaving a braying British media calling for the managers resignation, and yet, on the other hand, will 'lesser' players even put in the effort in the qualifiers if they know there is a large chance they'll be dropped for a 'bigger' name when the actual comp comes round?

If players want to play for the national team, let them. Its not up for the clubs to decide this for them. If they don't want to play for the national team, no one should make them either. Take the US National Basketball team for example. In the early 2000s, playing for the national team had lost its appeal and a number of superstars decided that they did not want to be a part of it. Te US then lost at the 2002 World Championships and in the 2004 Olympics. It seems that many of the superstars kind of took this as a slap in face/ challenge to US basketball. In turn, a bunch of superstars stepped up and played on the team for the 2006 World Championships and the 2008 Olympics. If the players feel passionate about it, they will play. If they don't, you don't want them playing anyways.
I also think more could be done with the scheduling to help reduce the time crunch on players. More emphasis should be put on games and qualifying in the summer. They player are used to playing at least one match a week during the season, they can play more often than what they do in the off season. UEFA, or other respective governing bodies, can even dictate a few weeks off here or there during the club seasons to allow for international duty. Also, why play seemingly useless friendlies in the middle of the season. Play them for tuneups for a major tournament, but don't play them just for whatever. I think just some small changes could make a big difference.

I had never seen a team just get dominated like that for a full 90 mins. Sundlnd could not even keep the ball. It was like all of us out there playing against United. DF, Surely you remember Van Gaal's Ajax side of the middle 90s? They could break down any 11 man bunker put up in front of them. They would patiently stroke the ball outside to middle to out to mid to out to mid.... about 25-35 yards out. As soon as the defense was sufficiently hypnotized they made an incision and scored, seemingly at will.

I followed them closely enough to have drawn those very conclusions, their personalities come through on field and technical area. My favorite Van Gaal moment was his high kick impersonation on the sideline, not bad for an old man in a suit! I still have it on VHS somewhere. Favorite Litmanen moment, too many to mention! No one I've seen can shape their body as quicky and precisely to receive a ball or strike it on the volley, his control of himself and technique was impressive.

One guy I really wish was still on the team is Crouch. Between the way Keane has been struggling and Torres being injured for so long, and the way he has been looking at Portsmouth, it is looking like a big mistake letting him go. I always liked him and was sad to see him go, but I never thought we would be missing him this badly.

Rafa must have smoked something he's starting Kuyt as the lone striker... I'd reckon Steven Gerrard is the other striker. I understand keane hasn't been very effective this season, but Kuyt as the lone striker? I'm glad yossi benayoun is getting some time on the pitch.. just a thought, maybe I should pick up Robbie Keane on my fantasy team and then drop him and he'll start to score?

theycallmedan'lboone

just my 'umble opinion, but from what the official has been calling, hulls first goal, while pretty, constitutes "jumping into another player" and just wasn't called, and was the result of a poorly called foul that was a dive, blatent. the second, poor carra... Gerrard to the rescue, If torres had been fit/playing, I think liverpool would have been up 5-2, as kuyt missed 3 screaming chances. Dossenna, I think needs to go back to Italy, and send Riise back. Liverpool's set piece defending, horrible as usual. Seriously, Torres get better...I love you dirk kuyt, but you're not a very good striker. This game has been pretty physical, and honestly the first half was really enjoying... other than the first 20 minutes.
2nd half is kicking off, Hope it's more exciting for those in Red, pool's pace is seemingly short... especially up top. and in the back..

probably the fact that he's not scoring a lot or that he looks a little on the female side. my best bets anyhow
He's class tho (uh, technique-wise anyhow), gotta give him some time, after Tottenham won the Cup last season and they had absolutely nothing to play for (they couldn't be relegated and their European place finish was determined)... after that point, Ramos let go, they did nothing. Berbatov sat sulking wanting to go to MU since then, perhaps before a little.
A sulk that long takes a bit of time to get over form-wise.
Lesson: smile dammit and get on with things, make the best of where you at

I was excited when United bought him. I thought he could really be a force up front, and would add greatly to the attack looking at last year how much better would have united been with another striker. I guess I figured another big body like Ruud who can actually attack. He is not in great form right now and missing a lot of good chances, hopefully that will come around. But I see him lagging. He disappears for 20 mins or so at a time.
Then I look at when Tevez gets in the game and as I said before the guy just does not stop. He scores big goals, creates and has a motor on him. It would be a real shame to see him as the odd man out for this team.

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has dismissed rumours they have agreed a deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Earlier this week Real director Pedro Trapote was quoted as saying a deal for a summer transfer had been struck.
That was denied by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who said he "wouldn't sell a virus" to "that mob."

After the summer or Ronaldo-gate I was not ready to start hearing this so early on. Will he go to Real, yes he will, without a doubt one day. Will Sir Alex sell him in current form because he wants to go, I think he will for the right price and not a pound less. When Beckham left, Sir Alex all ready had him in the doghouse a bit with the 'boot' incident. And don't forget the 2nd leg of Champs League where Beckham sat the entire game. You could see that one coming. Sir Alex and Ronaldo seem to be on good terms, and I think unlike when Beckham left and United could afford to get a Ronaldo and the Famous Djemba-Djemba to see if they could find a replacement. They would need to turn around and spend that $ immediately now.

speaking of local teams... my season starts, well, February, but I may not be on the same team, as the captain and I had a bit of a bust up last year... ( imagine, me and someone having a row )

PERFECT!
so for the first time in my life I've been cut from a team... the captain from my old squad sent me the email the other day. something about trimming down the roster... I cry. :sad I've emailed most all the other captains in the leagues, all 4 divisons and have gotten the same shtick "we're pretty full but we'll keep you in mind" so I'll just be getting fatter...
Liverpool is better than Man U.

The only problem is that you can only get the pink one in short sleeve, which I know is the one you wanted. Good thing you live in Alabama though and there is no need for long sleeve anything down there.

noone's seeing the speed up to that goal? just inside 40 yards he pushes the ball WAY too far out in front of him to catch but he does catch it, then does it again. Leaving Mexes for dead on both bursts.
The shot itself is ordinary in comparison, even though I doubt half the strikers at the same level could score from that angle with a keeper making himself large a foot or two in front of them.
Mr Italy, who's your team? It would be just my luck to have a Serie A follower here finally... that supports inter

The money is utterly ridiculous and bad for the game. They've upped their offer so high now that apparently Milan would like it, just down to terms with Kaka. I'm sure that boy's between a rock and a hard place, 240 mil for the club he loves? If he goes he's a (an even bigger) club legend, if he stays there will always be that spectre of the money that's not there hanging over his head. If he goes well, he's at Manchester City. Poor guy, horrible thing that couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

So my team has started their practizin' for the up and coming season. 10 games, Win loose or draw in these matches. Looks like we're going to have a pretty decent squad. I've never played with any of these people before, and in a brand new division, with teams I've never played against. For a 5er of stogies, What will our record be? 1-8-1?
for the first tie breaker how many goals will I score? 0? 1? 5?* for the second tie breaker how many goals will my defense allow all season?
*the past 2 seasons I've been more like Jamie carragher (NO, NOT AGAINST SPURS) than Vidic, but scored twice in 2 seasons, a 25 yard volley, and a header off a corner. (If I score 10 goals this season, city will offer me 100 million)

Don Fernando
01-20-2009, 04:10 AM
well, they are cutting in the costs, Ballack's new contract is considerably lower then his current one and that happens everywhere. Benitez wants new players at Liverpool but the board vetoed it and said to sell first to be able to pay for new transfers. Manchester United only ivested in two youngsters. The credit crunch will be good for football, the market will cool down a bit.
