Has anybody made their own humidors? If so, what all is involoved?

AdamJoshua
02-26-2013, 07:44 PM
Most of us without woodworking skills or tools etc., usually go for making a coolador or a winador, which there are plenty of threads for here. Just takes a bit of looking :)

Ryan, can that plastic thing, or rip it open and remove the foam inside. Once it's clean, fill it with beads and reseal. You'll also want more beads inside, so be sure to get plenty.

So the Lauderdale got here today, yes I know it's not an Aristo, but the price difference would be enough to put a few boxes in here. I actually really like it, especially for the price. (hey I AM a jew after all).

I have a newb question but I'll post it in the newb question that I'll just post here, since I am going with passive humidity control (some beads ... lots of beads as soon as i order them) so you still season a beast like this, I'm assuming you do at least for a bit when you aren't using an active system, correct?

As you can see I had to take one of the shelves out of the winador to fit boxes in so this comes right in time. :D

Oh and to answer my own question, yes you need to season them just like anything else.

Ugh 3 months down the slope, I have a 100 count desktop, a 65 count Daniel M desktop, a winador with Forrest shelves, an end table cabinet humi and to top it all off it turns out as Tim so eloquently put it, I'm a CC whoore. :r :r

Try these (http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/drawerOrganizers/modular?productId=10000691&N=183): score them with a utility knife then snap 'em. If you cut them just right, you won't have to take the adhesive backing off. I've used them in my tool chests and they work great.

Never thought about an old "dorm room" fridge being able to convert into a humi. And I have a wine fridge that the fan works but not the cooling unit...I need to figure how I can convert them into humis as that would really entice me to actually start buying boxes and not getting raped for singles.

Or maybe a coolidore...just dont know how it is you can keep cigars in them even with cedar boxes as its so air tight...anyone got some good literature to study up on??

A few questions for you.

1. What is your street address?

2. What is your alarm code?

3. When will you and your entire family be out of town?

Thanks.

F #2 and #3 just give me the street address or his IP address :D

I'll post mine when done moving.

You can either adjust the seal or just open it once a week or so.

Leaving Barksdale, LA and heading to Keesler, MS. It gets hot and humid here, but the humidity down on the MS Gulf Coast can make here seem like the Mojave. That's why I'm going to make the step up to the wineador...and then damn, I'll have all that extra room and need to fill it. :) Going from two humidors - one a 100-ct and one a 75-ct - to a wineador is going to be like moving from a shack to Wayne Manor. :D

Tupperdors are awesome and I always keep some around, but if you want inexpensive, hassle-free, large capacity storage and aging capability, just get a cooler and some beads. They're like giant tupperdors. My RH holds rock steady at 65% with almost no maintenance.

I've thought about the cooler option, but I'm not sure the wife would agree to a large Coleman hanging around the living room or bedroom. Maybe I could convince her to let me replace my bedside table with it. :D

The tall cabinet on the left is the custom MXT that Bob Staebell built for me. On the credenza on the left is the desktop Bob also built to match the MXT and was gifted to me by some amazing inmates. I see all of these upright coolerdor's so I thought I'd top my setup from back at this post:

http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1011838&postcount=2189

I had been using coolers since 97 and just took it to the next level. Bought it brand new, scratch/dent for under $500. The compressor has an on/off dial, so it stays off but I keep it plugged in for the light.

Decided to snap a quick pick after I did some housekeeping.

My humble offering to the thread. I've got some yard 'gars on the lower level along with a couple Nat Sherman limited editions from when they relocated their store a while back. I should tidy my box up but it just gets picked through so often it may be futile.

I converted an old gun cabinet into a humidor. Basically, I just sanded down and restained it, Sealed up the glass in the door and lined it with SC.

Here is empty:

And full(these are several months old, so the collection has kept growing):

I have also switched from KL to HCM beads. The little white boxes in the photos are wireless hygrometers, I keep the receiver on my nightstand. All the dividers are moveable, so I can adjust each shelf accordingly.

I bought a 150qt Marine cooler a little over 2 years ago. At the time, it was very empty and I thought "I'll never run out of room" :lr It got to the point where it was difficult to keep moving boxes all the time so I got the drawers and shelves from Forrest and thought "finally, I'll have the room I need". :lr
Now I'm considering a secondary, long term storage cooler.
http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Mr_Clean69/Cigar%20Stuff/2014.01.13_16.56.12_zpsmdpgyiym.jpg (http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/Mr_Clean69/media/Cigar%20Stuff/2014.01.13_16.56.12_zpsmdpgyiym.jpg.html)
I realize the shelves aren't stuffed, but they full enough it's hard to move stuff around.
http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Mr_Clean69/Cigar%20Stuff/2014.01.13_16.56.29_zpsbnstwaqg.jpg (http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/Mr_Clean69/media/Cigar%20Stuff/2014.01.13_16.56.29_zpsbnstwaqg.jpg.html)
Both drawers I've had to double stack to fit all the singles.

Moral of the story....always go bigger than you ever thought you could possibly fill.
