Figured since I closed the 2011 thread down a few days ago, it was time to start the 2012 thread. Let the "ribbing" begin. :D

Not expecting a whole lot this year. Pitching still looks like it's gonna be an issue and the whole SS thing is looming. Initial thoughts are I am really hoping we aren't at the bottom of the NL East at the end of the year.

Sadly, I agree with you. I'm expecting an off season of inactivity or dollar store pickups. It'll suck to see Reyes in a Marlins uniform.

Mac, the Mets can't afford anyone in their prime!!
Who do you want to close?
Pelfrey?

In unrelated news,
The Mets New Jersey's go on Sale Friday.
The New uniform is designed to resemble the original 1962 design.
Let's hope their record resembles the 62' team as well! :D

Looks like Jose Reyes won't be a Met next year.

The Mets took care of an expected piece of business Wednesday, offering free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes arbitration. The Mets made the move to make sure that they would be compensated with 2012 Draft picks if Reyes, a Type A free agent, signs with another club. It is likely that Reyes will not accept the Mets' offer, because if he did, he would be agreeing to play for the Mets for another year with a pay raise from the $11 million he made in 2011 and would be forgoing the opportunity to secure a multiyear offer for a lot more money.

Well, were I the Mets, I wouldn't offer Reyes a multiyear megadeal either. When he's on the field, he's one of the best shortstops in the game, at the plate and with a glove. When he's on the DL, which has been much too much of the time, he's an overpaid cheerleader.

I would have to agree with this. BUT, I wonder if he'll just happen to be a bit healthier on a different ball team? I mean, was he truely happy playing for the Mets organization? Did he milk his time on the DL?

true story....

A few days after the Mets were eliminated from the playoffs (May 7th, 2011 :D), New York Police retrieved a body out of Jamaica Bay. The male victim was wearing nothing but lady's underwear, pantyhose, high-heeled shoes, makeup and a Mets shirt.

The cops started mocking the getup of the corpse. Then they noticed the dead man had a wedding ring on. The cops realized that this guy probably had a wife, maybe kids, and that it would hurt them to see their beloved dressed in such an embarrassing wardrobe.

So they took off his Mets shirt.

I think Bobby V is pretty underrated as a manager. He got to the World Series with an outfield comprised of Benny Agbyana, Butch Huskey and Timo Perez. He really only had 1 star on that team with Mike Piazza.

As an aside, Bobby V is a Stamford, CT legend. He grew up here. He owns a bar here called Bobby Valentine's. Over the last year, he has also served as Director of Public Safety for the city.

Life as a Mets fan for the next couple of seasons is not going to be very pleasant.

I think Reyes will have a mediocre first year - most free agents don't perform all that well their first year. For the whole contract, he'll probably have 3 injury plagued years. When he's healthy, he's one of the most exciting players to watch, a triple machine.

What's next? Trading David Wright? Unfortunately, this probably makes the most sense for the future.

kelmac07

Thank you Jose for helping this team become a laughing stock of the New York sports world.
Thank you Jose for making the Mets the 4th best team in the NL East and maybe even 5th best
Thank you Jose for the endless supply of hamstring jokes I got to tell
Thank you Jose for having your final moment in a Met uniform be leaving a game in the first inning after you bunted for a hit,
and showed more concern for your batting crown then the Met Fans who came to see you play

Looks like Tejada will be the SS to open the season. His glove is a little better than Reyes's, but not his arm, his speed, or his bat. Gonna be a LONG year. We need some pitching and a leadoff hitter...BAD!!! Hope Alderson does something worth while at the winter meetings.

Marlins grab Reyes and Heath Bell...with the Nats looking good, 5th place seems to be a reality this coming year. :bh :bh I just hope we don't go and try to sign Manny Ramirez. :r

Cutting and pasting from my current Facebook status.

As of today I am no longer a Mets fan. This ownership group has lost its fanbase. Their own financial woes, have begun to effect their ability to sign their own superstars. They build a beautiful new stadium, and might as well have painted it Dodger blue. They lie to their fans saying they will do whatever they can to put a competitive team on the field. Starting right now, I will not step foot in Citi Field for a Met game until the Wilpons are no longer owners.

Good luck in your support of this utter joke of an ownership group. It makes me sad that the team I fell in love with as a kid has fallen this far.

More news for my dysfunctional Mets. Reyes signs with the Marlins, Terry Collins tells the press that Pagan is our new leadoff hitter, Sandy Alderson trades him to the Giants for Andres Torres (another aging veteran, 33 years old) and Ramon Martinez. WTF??? Are the GM and manager not talking at all?? No wonder the Mets are in such sad shape right now. We also sign Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco. I DO NOT like any of these deals. We are going to be the laughing stock of the NL East for sure now.

I would love to have Cody Ross...but no, we sign another "past their prime" veteran. :bh :bh :bh

Reports are that he quit on the team in September.
Management and the front office felt he was faking injuries, most notably his dehydration issue.
I don't know what the #'s are, but can't imagine Pagan was making that much $.
He is a 4th outfielder at best, on a decent team.

Didn't realize that he quit in September. I think I quit on them in July or August, so I guess I missed it.

And yes on a decent team, he doesn't start. However on the Mets this year, he'd probably be #1 if Bay doesn't bounce back at some point.

Pagan is 30 and hit .262 with 7 HRs, 56 RBI, and 32 steals.

On the first day of school, a teacher asked her class, "Who here is a Mets fan?"

Mets signed left-handed pitcher Chuck James to a Minor League contract and invited him to Spring Training. James, 30, posted a 6.10 ERA during a brief stay in Minnesota's bullpen last summer, also compiling a 3-2 record, one save and a 2.30 ERA over 62 2/3 innings with the organization's Triple-A Rochester affiliate.

After being non-tendered Monday, Mike Baxter is back with the Mets. The club re-signed the 27-year-old outfielder to a Minor League contract Friday. He will be invited to Major League Spring Training as part of the deal.

Why haven't we offered Cody Ross a deal yet??? He'd be a perfect fit for right field.

Duda is their plan for RF...offensively he is fine, defensively...not so much. and I am sure you are absolutely right in trying to plug holes before upgrading. I really dislike Torres playing CF. They just aren't going to spend any more money. Today, some article on CNNSI compared the Mets' Wilpons to the Dodgers' McCourt. Yikes! The only good news is if MLB forces the Wilpons to sell.

It's a shame. Citi Field is a really nice venue (even moreso if you happen to be a 1950s Dodgers fan), but expensive. Really expensive when you think of the garbage they'll be trotting out this year.

I just don't believe Ike is the permanent solution at 1B. His glove is fine, but he doesn't hit for enough power (HRs, RBIs, etc). Hell none of the Mets hit for power. :bh :bh

I don't dislike the Yankees, but some Yankee fans do make me crazy.

My folks were Brooklyn Dodgers fans. When the Dodgers moved, they didn't root for the Yankees or the Mets. Growing up, I watched both the Yankees and the Mets. I became more of a Mets fan probably because of Doc Gooden's nasty curveball, Straw's easy swing and Hernandez's mustache (just kidding, although it is still awesome).

The Mets and Yankees never played each other (until the inter-league play started), so there was no reason to hate the Yankees. They weren't rivals.

Ike is 24 years old, a baby!
In 183 career games, most of which were in cavernous Citi Field, he's hit 26 hr and driven in 96 runs.

Come on down and get your feelings hurt. :D In 183 career games...26 HR and 96 RBI are not exactly what I'd call "power numbers". In comparison with other first baseman his stats are not providing enough punch in an otherwise weak offense. Granted, he is no Pujols, Fielder, Howard, Cabrera, or Texiera...but 1 HR every 25 AB isn't gonna win us any NL East titles. Now his RBI ratio is not bad at all...1 RBI every 6.8 AB. I guess the point I was really trying to make was that it's okay to spend $ 36 million for Perez, loads of money on over the hill veterans thatn can no longer produce and god knows how much on Castillo...but we won't spend decent money on a power. hitting 1B. :bh :bh

Maybe I am being cynical...with all the money the Mets brass has thrown around the past five years, I'm just a tad upset that we won't spend any money to upgrade this years team. Like Chris said, with a beautiful new ballpark they're gonna throw an, at best, minor league team out on the field for an entire season? :bh :bh :bh

I don't think you are being cynical, just realistic. I'm not remotely excited to see anyone on the team play. David Wright used to be someone I liked to watch, but his play has been way down.

The only way this team performs this year is by a miracle. Wright, Bay and Johan would have to have career years and Ike would have to take a giant step forward. That wouldn't even be enough. There are gaping holes at pitcher, 2B, C, CF and RF - that assumes Tejada is ok at SS.

The only honest assessment of this team is that it's a basement dweller and probably will be for a few years.

Queens, NY. (AP) - A seven-year old boy was at the center of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over whom should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When
the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the New York
Mets, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Another show stopper as reported by ESPN's Adam Rubin:

"The Mets and middle-infielder Ronny Cedeno are at a "critical" point in negotiations and there could be a verdict soon, but there has yet to be an agreement between the sides, a source familiar with the negotiations said.

That comment came as a Venezuelan-based report from Pendulo Latino maintained the Mets are closing in on signing Cedeno.

If Cedeno does come on board, Ruben Tejada and Daniel Murphy still would be projected as the starters, but Cedeno would be a viable alternative at either position should something occur.

Cedeno hit .249 with two homers and 32 RBIs in 413 at-bats for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. He has played 548 major league games at shortstop and 81 games at second base over seven major league seasons."

Looks like the Mets have finally given up on Fernando Martinez and placed the once-untouchable outfielder on waivers this week.

The Mets also placed reliever Daniel Ray Herrera on waivers to clear 40-man roster space for outfielder Scott Hairston and infielder Ronny Cedeno, whose free-agent deals will soon become official. I believe we should keep Herrera, he pitched well down the stretch out of the bullpen for us.

Seeking rotation and bullpen depth, the Mets signed right-handed pitchers Miguel Batista and Fernando Cabrera to Minor League contracts on Tuesday and invited both to Spring Training. While Batista is 40 years old, he pitched well at the end of last year.

Despite the struggles in the banking industry, the Mets will still keep Citi Field as the name of their ballpark. Mainly because they're hoping they can get a bailout for their bullpen.
And, despite their troubles, Officials for the New York Mets said season ticket sales are doing well. Especially popular are the new "first six innings" and "April through August" plans.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure about Wright, as he's not seemed to live up to his early potential. I'm not sure he's a meaningful upgrade at third, since A-Rod's far from a stiff there, and I am sure he's not necessarily an upgrade at the plate, as he's "slipped" nearly as badly as has A-Rod . . . and from a lesser height. And I'm pretty sure A-Rod's ego would not let him agree peacefully to being "demoted" to DH, and Girardi doesn't need problems like that in the clubhouse. Still, it's an interesting thought.

it was just a thought. I have faith that Wright isn't done. Remember, he had major back problems last season. Who really knows how long those problems have been around? Mets debut uniform patches for Carter

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets debuted uniform patches in honor of late Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter on Thursday, wearing them on their right sleeves. Carter's nickname "KID" and his No. 8 are stitched in white on the patches, in the center of a black home plate with white trim. The Mets plan to wear them throughout the 2012 season.

Carter, who won a World Series championship with the Mets in 1986, passed away last month following a nine-month battle with brain cancer. Dozens of past and present Mets attended his memorial in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., the following week.

"Fred [Wilpon] came up to me before the memorial and said, 'Do you want to put these on the uniform?'" manager Terry Collins said. "I thought it was terrific. We found Sandy [Carter's wife] when it was over, and Fred and I told her that we were going to put them on our uniforms. She was certainly thrilled."

I have nothing invested in this team anymore, and will not root for them until the ownership group is either forced to sell by MLB or sells because they can't afford the continued losses.

Unfortunately Chris, the Wilpons aren't going anywhere.
Their financial woes have been grossly misreported.
This is evident by the recent "sale" of the minority shares.
The minority shares that were sold, were sold to the Wilpons, Wilpon family members, and Wilpon business interests such as SNY.
What the Madoff scandal has done, is forced the Wilpons to keep the Mets revenue with the Mets,
SNY revenue with SNY, and the same for the real estate revenue.
The lack of co-mingling their money has left them short on the Mets side of the ledger.
The "sale" was a way for them to infuse cash from their more profitable business ventures to the struggling Mets.

I think the Mets are looking at 2 lean years, they will clean out their bad contracts, and then become major players again.

.6 stolen bases in the opener.

I think the plan is for the players to steal them and the Wilpon's to fence them.

I can't wait to see all the starters hit the field at the same time. Especially the in-field. I'm curious to see how they are going to play together. I still have faith that this season isn't going to be a total loss.

More good news:

David Wright joined a cast of the walking wounded in Mets camp. The Mets sent [Wright] to New York to have his left rib cage examined, and likely have an an "ultrasound-guided cortisone shot," GM Sandy Alderson said. Wright is one of several Mets, including outfielders Scott Hairston and Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who have suffered from rib cage/oblique issues this spring, leading the Mets to adjust some of their training routines. "You better believe it's troubling," Collins said. ... "This didn't happen twenty years ago." In response, Collins has ordered his players to put more effort into stretching exercises, make sure to stay hydrated, and reduce the amount of swings taken during batting practice.

In a 7-1 loss to the Cardinals, Pelfrey strikes again.......

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey left some pitches up early on, and the Cardinals took advantage. Freese, the World Series MVP who also had a three-run homer Monday, hit a two-run shot over the right field wall with one out in the first inning, and Molina led off the second with a homer to left.

Pelfrey gave up four runs on six hits in 4 1-3 innings.
