Where is the hardware picture?
This week is nuts.
Monday power skating
Tuesday swimming
Wednesday summer team practice
Thursday judo (may skip this week)
Friday power skating
Saturday up at 5am to drive to roller tourney then Xice jamboree in afternoon
Sunday Xice jamboree in AM immediately followed by summer team practice.

Thankful power skating was only 2 weeks. Signed up before he made summer team.

BUSY! Look forward to hearing about the Jamboree...

No idea about the hardware... Thought we were getting it this weekend, but apparently not???

The HS is starting practice tonight... Apparently this new coach is going to have them practice during Summer League... I'll take it! LM is also going to play with the Regulators this Summer in Men's League...

Christmas in April..... (we're saying it is his early birthday present)....;)

His gloves are trashed, holes in one palm & 2 fingers, both the pad straps on the thumbs have come undone. Shoulder pads getting small...but has not outgrown them. They're pretty funky though. Needed new practice socks and I just decided to throw the tape in......

The boy loves vapor gloves. Do you feel comfortable with him in the u+ as a D man blocking shots?
I was playing with those at giant the other day. While super light and comfortable the front panels around the center section seemed really thin. Hell I have the boy in S13 pads and those things are really protective in the chest and collar area and hes a forward.

Its funny how certain companys do a good with certain items. I know for the boy we like Bauer for Gloves. Bauer or Reebok for Shins and elbows. Shoulders I definitely prefer the way Easton does their chest and front panel. They also now tend to have a low profile and large cap option. Their new Mako line of shoulders is very cool and the boy said they felt great when he tried them on. Pants I still say most pants are garbage. Graf, Tackla Eagle make amazing pants extreme protection with great range of motion. Skates anf helmets are such an individual thing but seems bauer holds court. No idea why I just wrote all that. Clearly wasting time.

You know, he said the same thing about the CL's.... "These feel like I don't have anything on.....wonder how they will take a shot?" But we went with them and will see. Amazed at how light they are....how good they feel. Reviews of those wearing them say they are surprised with the level of protection. Didn't look at anything else, going from the U+ Pros.... Interested to see the Mako's....as I have stated before on here, not a big fan of big shoulder caps.

We're pretty close on equipment.... The Little One is overdressed and looks to be sponsored by Bauer....:r

Big One :
Helmet - Bauer 9900
Gloves - Bauer APX
Shoulder - CCM CL
Elbow -RBK 11K
Shin -RBK 11K
Pants -Bauer TO (because he is tall, the Xlong option is nice)
Skates -Bauer One100

Little One :
Helmet - RBK 8K
Gloves -Bauer TO
Shoulder -Bauer One95
Elbow -Bauer One95
Shin -Bauer One95
Pants -Bauer TO
Skates -Bauer X5

Looking at the pic above, I gave the LM all that tape and he bought another 16 rolls at the Grizzlies clear out(paid like $6 for 16 rolls).... Thinks he needs to retape his stick every few times on the ice....:sh

Lol sin bin.

Found a new hell for him. Parking garage Ramp runs. Running up all four levels non stop sucks for even me. Did it 3 times then on fourth had his sister do it and he had to chase her down. He was gased.

So my son spent lunch yesterday and today in the office. He was playing soccer yesterday even though he has been told not to. He had gotten into some altercations with second graders at the start of the year and I guess the big bad 1st grader was to physical playing soccer. WITHOUT PERMISSION! We told him no more soccer. Yesterday first time back playing soccer. He gets into a dispute with someone over his goal. The boy got in his face and apparently he decided to break out his judo knowledge and toss the kid backwards. My wife was so pissed.

It doesnt help that at the start of the year and last year these 2 boys had a little history and mine keeps ending up on the non hurt side. Ahhhhhhhh hockey. Apparently he went to a baby shower over the weekend and took on a 10 and 9 year old in a pool fight and woukdnt back down. Parents came up to wife and commented on how tough he was and how he wouldnt back down.

For Memorial Day we are going to a tourney in Valencia with the squirt team hes on for spring ice.
His roller mite 8U team is playing 1hr away in corona.
He has ice games friday morning and evening and Sunday at 6 am. Then a game on Monday.
For Roller a lot of games on Saturday and Sunday. So the scheduling worked out perfect. Should play 4 ice and 6 or more roller games over that weekend.

Think hockey/soccer is tough switch... Position is invaluable, but wonder about the physical. The Little One is always trying to "knock um off" the ball.... Her coach always worries about her physical play.... Maybe worse, because it is all girls....??? Practice is worse, always has girls crying and saying she is too physical... I actually just texted him about it....

Hey guys, I will be selling my boys Hockey equipment in a couple of days. It is all "like new" in excelent condition. He only played one season in this stuff. He was a short, skinny 10-11 year old when he wore it so it is probably better suited for an 8-10 year old.
I will post pics and sizes w/ measurments here soon. Please let me know if you or someone you know is looking for some very nice condition, child/youth sized Hockey Equipment.
It will be Skates, Shoulder Pads, Pants, Elbow Pads, Shin Guards, Gloves and a few pairs of socks.

P.M. me if you are interested.

Thanks
Brent

Well the roller went beyond well. They lost 1 game all weekend. The loss was to Anarchy 949 which is a team composed largely of jr kings ice hockey players. They played that team in the championship game and won 5-4. Winning the 8U division. This was an AAU jr. Olympics qualifier in Corona. M didnt do much had an assist or 2. His big moment came when he absolutely destroyed a kid who cut from the wing towards the net while looking backwards. He turned into Ms path as he was coming down as a center for support. He saw the kid but didnt alter his path. Ended up just drilling the kid and getting away with it. Kid was down for about 2 minutes crying. It really seemed to affect their team. They took a bad pematy afterwards which resulted in a goal.

Ice has been horrible. We ended up having to switch most of our D to forwards because they are useless. Our forwards were spending most the game back checking anyway. They are in 6th out of 8 teams and play a consolation game in the AM. Then home.

Giving him a restfrom hockey for a few weeks when we get back.

Congrats on the roller win! Always nice to finish with a trophy.....

The HS team is in disarray.... One game look like they have it figured out, then chit the bed.... Better figure this out in the Summer or it is going to be a long regular season. The team looked like a bunch of kids at "Drop In" for a Sunday skate. The Little Man is not immune, I told him that he looked like he was disinterested at best, the first 2 periods.... Games like that make me want to tear out my hair....lucky, I don't have any.

On of the few photos I got of the game, as I tend to put the camera down when I am frustrated.... Don't know why, not really intentional....I think when there is no flow, it makes it difficult to follow with a lens and I lose interest in shooting.... Anyway, goal.... Wicked wrist shot bringing it into the zone.....not sure the goalie even saw it(he was blocked by his own guy....

Stayed for the JV game, the son of a good friend is going to be a Fr. He had a hattrick by the end of the 2nd(when I left).... Though this looks like it may go wide, nope....RING!!!!...GOAL!!!

Beat an old rival tonight that apparently has fallen on hard times..... It was ugly.... LM didn't take many shots, as I think they were directed not to.....A LOT of just passing to pass. But he rang a few posts and had a BOOMING one timer that the goalie didn't have a chance at. So ugly, he just sat, smiled and went to get ready for the face off....

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/55_zpsf8e83449.jpg (http://s1091.photobucket.com/user/EJB21/media/55_zpsf8e83449.jpg.html)

I really don't know what this team is going to do when we hit the regular season, but they are surprising me in the Summer.....

Signed contracts for both kids on travel....UGH..... Cigar budget just went in the chitter.... LM is playing for the AA Regulators and the Little One is playing for the Lightning. Little One had an offer for the Regulators, but we took the Lightning, which is cheaper and I think will put a better team on the ice. I think the Jr. Grizzlies will be a really good team(think they were like 3-1-2 against the Lightning last year) and I got an email 2 days before tryouts, expressing desire for her to be there, I told the coach we were set for the 13/14 season. She had skated with them during the Spring..... I just couldn't justify the 1K difference in cost for the same ice & travel for an 8 year old(playing up as a '05).

E.J.

Last Saturday.

Decided instead of driving an hour and paying money to use a hockey treadmill, I would just make him skate parking garage ramps. Garage is 4 floors because it has an underground level so for him its an ass kicker. Hes usually wasted after 4 trips to the top. Also doing a little running. My goal is to get him to run a 5k with me by end of summer like abbs did.

The boy and his buddy are going to sneak into a Jr. Sharks tryout prep clinic this week. Supposed to be 04 to 02. Signed them up and I am sure they will blend in except for size. Even that shoukd be fine as there are usually some small 04s which they will be as tall as. The blackhawks have been doing a skills skate 2 times a week preping for tryouts. He got moved uo to the squirt group with them and has been busting his arse. Getting closer to age 8 and seeing that mental jump and inderstanding starting to happen. Shoukd be a fun year. Tryouts next weekend. Hes already on team but got him going hard this weekend and this week to look his best

He's a '96, so moved to U18's this year and jumped ship to the Regulators.... Didn't even go to Oly's(the coach) U18 Grizzlies tryout. I'm interested to see who is on that team(have yet to see a roster) though & how they'll compete.

Just registered for the Lady Lightning U12 team that the Little One has been invited to play on. Should be interesting. Extension of the U14 Lady Lightning, which to date, has been our only youth girls travel team. Really, the only youth level all girls team locally. They have been really competitive and I think related to that success, they are trying to grow the program. That is apparent with the formation of this team, as well as a U16 tournament team.

The U12 Lady Lightning team will play in a "Squirt" U10 house league that is made up of 95% boys. They are a special entry team, most the girls will be playing on one of those other house teams with the boys. They will not practice as a team, just play 17 games. They are going to try to see if travel to a few all girls tournaments is viable.

The kicker, a few of the girls....my daughter included, are playing on travel teams, which would normally preclude them from playing house league. I am interested to see how they are going to compete.

I am sure that we will have more than our fair share of conflicts and probably only play in 10ish games(total guess), but when I ask the Little One about it, she was all in. She REALLY loves the Lady Lightning coach, who will also be coaching this team as well.

Nice should be interesting to see how the girls hang against boys given the ages of some. Should be a great learning experience for her and the speed increase should be good also.

There was a little drama during hawks tryouts. Two kids I would have liked on the team got snatched by the team M quit last year with the ahole coach. The club didnt register a mite team till after tryouts. This way they could lure kids parents by offering them squirt spots. The club is garbage nobody good stays there past squirt and they lost their main rink last year as the owner turned it into a strip mall. Now they are using a 3/4s size rink. For the peewees and under and possibly a rink an hour away for others. I guess they were scared so they manipulated rules to keep kids whos parents dont understand their kids will ride the bench. Whats worse is both the kids are undersized 2nd year mites and are playing squirts. One is an emotional train wreck because his dad rides a the $ hit out of him. We played games with him this I summer and the kid was constantly crying. Hell at tryouts M literally beat up a kid who was hitting and slashing this kid because he couldn't take care of himself. Yet. Hes going to play squirt? All these nut bag parents thinking their kids going pro. You hear them talk and they are crazy. What is worse was both boys really like each other and wanted to play together.

For us no inline this year. We are doing Hawks Mite travel which is really just a local tournament team and inhouse squirt likely or maybe mite. The Sharks Youth Hockey organization was named one of USA Hockeys four model programs so we dont know if the boys can play up anymore like they allowed in the past.

One thing I have noticed is skating the ramps has greatly improved Ms speed and stamina. He is the fastest kid on his team and two kids that were close to his speed last year are definitely slower now. They did liners last practice and he destroyed everyone not even going all out. At school they had all the kids run a lap and he was the fastest kid in his grade. Not bad.

Scott,

Went to the U16 Grizzlies game yesterday to see how they looked. They dominated their competition(Boise Jr. Steelheads), but not sure what that means. Breakout looked REALLY good, solid D. Their goalie plays for our HS team, though is not currently the starter(who knows if that will change). I am interested to see how they(U16’s) and the U18’s compete in Michigan in a couple weeks. Assume you guys will be there?

Talked with the father of the goalie I mentioned above, he says that the 18's look really good, but I still have no idea who is on that team. Guess I'll have a lot of answers by the end of the month.

We are heading to Vegas to play the Jr. Wranglers this weekend. Not sure what type of team we are going to have, but excited to get on the ice.

Just had the goalie that was between the pipes for the 2 time State Championship team, for both their championships, transfer to our school and was at practice last night..... This should be interesting.

Went from not having a goalie last Summer, needing a kid to transfer in to have someone in net.....to now having 4, 3 of those being VERY GOOD. 2 are very young, but starting for a U16 AAA and a U16AA, the other mentioned above, who is between the pipes for a U18 AA and IMO, the best of the bunch. Crazy how things change in a year in that aspect.

HS team should be VERY DEEP & talented, but some of that is youth. Wouldn't want to be the coach, deciding who is going to be on the ice. He watched practice last night from off the ice to get a different view to evaluate. All that said, wonder if they will gel enough to make a serious run at the title....can't win on talent alone(think they have as much/more depth, than any team in the State).

Second game of the season and the first Win for the Squirt A team.
It took six or seven games last year to Get a win It looks like we are on the right track.

My son got his first point of the season.
An assist on the first goal of the game.
He's looking good out there This is going to be a great year.

Congrats on getting the early season win and your son getting on the scoresheet!

We had a chitshow in Vegas....

Had their ashes handed to them 4 straight games. Not only on the scoreboard, but physically. It got out of hand at points, not sure the refs had a handle on the games. I have never watched 4 games in a row like what I saw, standing room only in the box on numerous occasions, coaches getting run, kids getting run...not great hockey. To give you an idea, Jr. Wranglers welcomed us to Vegas by getting 63 PIM in the first game.... Seemed like they were shorthanded all the time and we still couldn't score.

The skaters looked close(they had one kid that really stood out), but they had some great kids in net and it showed. Feel like we outshot them by a good bit the first couple games and still were getting crushed.

LM got boarded in the first game and this was the result. I was sure that somehow a skate got in there, but it appears that his knee must have hit the ice or boards and a piece of plastic in his shinpad wedged against his knee and punctured the skin. I haven't seen the shinpad, but the coach was telling me. Crazy?

I flew down, but the boys bussed. Some of the tweets by the kids on the roadtrip were classic. A coach, who I know well through a friend, thought the casino smelled good after coming off the bus.

The hotel was a dump, but their beer was cold. I also love that you can walk from the hotel/casino through a door and be in the ice arena....with beer in hand.

Nice

EJ that is nuts. Never seen that before.

Ms mite team played 3 half ice games this Sunday. He and hus buddy went off and pissed off coaches. His best goal was when he was tripped driving the net from the side and scored while sliding on his stomach across the front of the net. The great thing about his mite club team is the coach has split the kids into 2 groups. He is working with the group of 5 kids who are good and working heavily on skating and puck movement. I am very happy how well hes getting coached right now.

Inhouse started last week. I really hope they let him play up. It was ugly out there talent wise for mites and he was visibly board on the ice. During a scrim he and his buddy were on opposite shifts. They literally controlled the puck 70% of the time. People were asking who they were it was kind of funny.

I'm in the same boat, between soccer and hockey, I am quite a taxi for the Little One....though we double up on 2 days and usually have 3 days off. I'll be happy when soccer ends the end of October, though I fear her coach is going to be upset when we don't commit fully to the Winter futsal and indoor leagues.

Monday - Off
Tuesday - U10 Lightning + U10 Max Soccer
Wednesday - Off
Thursday - Soccer
Friday - Soccer + U10 Hockey
Saturday - U12 Lady Lightning games(starting Oct) + U10 Lightning practice/games + Soccer games
Sunday - usually off, but have U10 Lightning practice this week.

^^^ Not bad for a U8 girl....:tu On the flip side, they have been working on lines and I think they are putting her at D. She is not too keen on this, feeling like she is going to sacrifice scoring. I reminded her that her brother was the 3rd leading scorer for the HS team last year, playing D.... Her response, "Yea, but that is because of his slapshot....I can't do that."

I feel fortunate that I no longer have to taxi the Little Man, he's on the ice pretty much daily, sometimes twice a day, between Regulators and the High School. I don't know how I'd do both. Not too pleased that I have to miss the first HS game(pre season) of the season tonight, due to Lightning practice for the Little One... Life of a hockey parent.....:sh

Yup were insane.
Glad they moved him up also. He told me he didnt want to play mites. After watching the skating evals I knew why. Cluster fock. Kids hitting each other with sticks in head focking off like crazy. He looked irritated and bored. Even wife saud she was going to pull him if they made him play mites which was a shock as she never cares, but they seem to have a huge in flux of low skill and behavior problem first years.

I screwed M for tomorrow. He has a travel game from 8 to 9:30. The inhouse program is having a bunch of USA Hockey people come put on a dryland and on ice coaching clinic for inhouse coaches from 10:30 to 1:00. They sent out a email looking for kids. I responded not really thinking and they wanted him. Then he has an inhouse squirt game at 3:45. I am going to assume that still being 7 he will be useless for the game. Have not told wife yet about clinic. Im going to get an ear full for this one.

We are heading to Vegas to play the Jr. Wranglers this weekend. Not sure what type of team we are going to have, but excited to get on the ice.

We didn't play the Grizzlies in Detroit, but we did play them this past weekend in Minnesota. Not sure how it works, but the showcase weekends are league games and it just turned out that we didn't meet up with them until this time.

The word was they were a new team? One of our kids played with one of the Grizzlies kids way way back at Mite and our parent was explaining how the team worked. She said they all eat together, bring their own food and drinks, and have a guy just for that!?!??!

She also said it costs 10k just to play, not including travel, and they fly everywhere (They certainly have to fly to all our showcases) and she also said that there are parents who help pay airfare for those who can't.

They didn't have a good weekend, but I certainly can see the potential they have. We gave them their worst loss of the weekend, 11-1. Looking at the results so far, after just 2 showcases, they haven't won a league game yet. We're about in the middle, which is what we expected. We've had a couple games that just didn't go our way. We should have gone 4-0 this past weekend but our kids **** the bed in game 2 :)

Our boys are currently 4th out of 10 so we'll see how the rest of the season goes. I think the next showcase is in Rochester NY next month.

E.J.
10-23-2013, 09:44 AM
Yea, have been watching their scores at the 2 showcases. They have been struggling to say the least.

Some of that info seems off, the team is not new....meaning, it's just Oly's(Darryl Olsen) team from last year, some kids aged out, new kids in ect. But he's been coaching the 16's for years, the organization just joined the NJPHL & started an U18, which they have never had before(so the 18's are new).

Not sure about the other logistics, assuming all eating together and whatnot, the travel is significant and I know a lot of the parents are not traveling with the kids, so maybe it is to assure they are eating & eating right.

I find it hard to believe that they are paying 10K and not having some type of travel included? Though admittedly, I don't know. I do know that the WMAHA(organization) is non-profit, so they have to be spending all 10K each kid is giving, towards the hockey related activities(impossible to spend that on ice time?). They actually gave us back money last year(from fees) that was not used.

4th out of 10 isn't bad at all! Good luck in NY!

Eleven
10-23-2013, 04:38 PM
The mom who gave us all that info is a 'talker' if you know what I mean. She knows something about EVERYTHING!

We could techincally be called new. Even though about 1/3 of the team has been together for years, our organization hasn't had a U16 team for a few years.

We've heard horror stories for years about other teams and their costs. Even with paying for all of our coaches traveling expense and rooms, brand new uniforms, bags, warmups, gloves and shells our cost to play this year was about $3700. We did have a couple people fly to Mn, but not many. I think that trip is the farthest we travel this year so all in all I think we're lucky in regards to travel!

We are dealing with a huge pile of $ hit here. The coach who my kid loves and joined the team for appears to be leaving to go play for a team in Dayton Ohio in the Federal Hockey League. So pissed. Already looking to next year when we go Jr.Sharks hopefully. M was in tears when I told him what was happening. Upside they moved him to D and he was a rock back there last weekend. Team lost 5-3 and he was +2 with 5 blocked shots and got away with 5 hits. 2 open ice where he touched puck before hitting kid 3 he tied up kid and rode him into the boards.

EXCELLENT news at the orthopedist today. No surgery and feels like he'll be good to go in 6 weeks. Assuming he heals like expected, 4% chance of re-fracture at 6 weeks. If I was hearing correctly, that 4% does not change from 6 weeks to 4 months. Goes back in 5 weeks to get cleared for the 6 week contact.

Can get back on the ice(no contact) next week, maybe 2, depending on how he is feeling.

This year has been a mix of awesome and crap. On the ice an average of 5 days a week.

His in house squirt coach is a tool bag who is constantly giving his kid more ice. His kids got to be -16 on the year. Second year squirt and the kids horrible. I think someone complained to the league as he sent out an email saying he would do a better job making sure everyone would get equal ice. M is leading his squirt inhouse team in scoring. Not bad for a second year mite playing against almost all second year squirts.

His travel mite coach continues to miss occasional games leaving one of the dad's to coach. M plays primarily D on his mite team. As a whole i am happy with his development of grasping gap control and stick and body position.

My kids team played a couple outdoor games this weekend in Toledo. Thankfully the team decided to purchase the pics that were taken, cause these next few really encompasse the way my kid plays, I couldn't be happier with the pics, or the way he played :)

Awesome sequence, Scott....

Outdoor games.....COLD.... Is that a warming tent I see?

Those tents were the locker rooms, they were heated. There is a building there as well with snack bar, seating etc etc but bleachers outside the building made it impossible to watch the games from inside.

Here are some more from that day. The first one is after another big hit, the photographer missed the actual hit though :)

This one cracks me up. The ref's reaction is funny, and the puck is way up in the air, not sure what was going on here:

Awesome photos Scott. Kid wants to play out doors. All the outdoor stuff has been having him say he wishes he could play it outside.

We got sucked back in to play roller this weekend. His old inline team is trying to win the NARCH West Coast Winter National event. He plays ice with like half the kids on the inline team. They can't beat the team coming from SoCal without him so he is going to play for free in the hopes of winning the tournament. The kid who doesn't like playing roller is being brought in to try to win a tournament.

We almost bailed after game one drama. Its irritating when people and kids expect your kid to be a savior. He had a mental breakdown in the first game resulting in the game losing goal. He was pissed as a couple of useless kids and a parent said something. Nevermind the kids were crap who had no impact on game or that in a 4-3 loss M had a goal and the only assist on the second goal. He came home basically in tears. That combined with other drama had me remember why we don't pay roller much anymore.

They went in as the second seed. M played D in championship game and they won 3-1. He completely shut down the other teams top line and tormented their sniper.

This is after the first playoff game of the season. The Boys crushed(as expected) and wanted a photo with the fans. The picture doesn't do the crowd justice, as it is well after handshakes, thank you to the crowd ect. These are just some of the kids that stuck around. Place was standing room only during the game. It is REALLY neat the amount of support they get from the community. It is unlike any other program in the State. I overheard on of the travel kids that plays with my son, who was there watching, saying how unreal the crowd/noise was during the game.

She loves her cellys.

M got asked to play on a spring tournament team which is going to Vancouver. I can't believe I did it, but I said yes. The main reason is we are hopefully going to start playing for junior sharks next year and this will be most of the kids who are likely to make the team as well as the likely coach. Fully expect to get pounded but the boy is excited to go.

Good stuff as always.

M is playing baseball this year first time since tball 2 years ago. Goes to first practice and decides he wants to be the catcher FML. Thankfully they have another kid who also wants to catch so it looks like he will split time. His coach seems to really like him and is having him play 1st base also. Was hoping he woukd be a second baseman like dad.

Bought the Little One some Reebok Ribcor 28K's.

Though marketed as a lower volume boot as opposed to the regular Reebok's in the past, to me, it doesn't appear to be so. The Little One has a wide foot(like her brother and dad). I was not aware, until after, that they were supposedly lower volume, so went with D width, as opposed to EE(what she has wore with her Bauer Vapors & brother wears with his Bauer Supremes). I wear D width in my Reeboks.

Anyway, fit is great. Early returns in skating was better than I expected on her 1st skate with them. Little foot pain early, by the end of the practice(1.25 hours), she said they felt great. Didn't seem to notice the extra height(4mm) with the SpeedBlade 4.0 holders or new steel.

The boot is not as stiff as her previous Bauer Vapor X5.0's, which surprised me, assumed they would be about equal.

Also picked her up the Reebok 20K bag, which she thinks is pretty neat. She had bag envy of all the kids with the Grit bags in the lockerroom.

Nice grab. My understanding is that only the actual ribcor model not the 28k or 30k had the different fit. This created some confusion. That said I wonder if it holds true on jrs. As far as stiffness thats what I was wondering about as I debated these. These are 16k replacements. Im guessing the 30k will be stiffer more like Micahs current 18ks. I bought him the new Graf 5035s but they were huge for. He tried on his buddys CCM CLs in the same size and they were considerably smaller. Now im left with a skate dilema.

next week heading to Vancouver for a tournament. Should be fun. Then LA for memorial day with a different team.

Nice gear. M loves Vapor gloves as do most kids.

Vancouver was kind of a bust. The boys went 1-2-1 for fourth out of 8 teams. The first game the went down 5-0 in first period then played that team which won the title to a 2-2 game. It sucked as they just had no jump and had never played together and it took them a bit to gel. The 2nd game they won 7-2.

The 3rd game was the real *****. They tied 5-5 but I and the coaching staff who had a former NHL player on it openly stated we got jobbed. We had so many kids get basically tackled on breakaways or tripped by the last defenseman back it was insane. I had 2 separate parents from the other team say we got screwed. They even gave them a phantom penalty call with 1:50 left of a 5-5 tie game after a brutal non call on a trip where the kid literally stuck his leg out and our kid went airborne. It was so bad we started laughing. As a result of the tie we were not able to play our first opponent again.

The fourth game for 3rd place was against the most heavily penalized team in the tournament. Amazingly in our game against them I think we took more penalties and even had to kill of 1:40 of a 5 on 3. We were the least penalized team in the tournament playing the most penalized team. We had a kid get horse collared in that game get called for interference. With 2:20 left our best defenceman who never said a word or raised his hands was crossed checked in the head comming in as their goalie froze the puck. He was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to offset the other teams penalty. Our coaches damn nearlost their minds. It was a 3-2 game and it looked like we were going to tie it up. After that they just didnt get it done.

As a whole I was very proud of our boys. It seemed like going up there was just an effort in frustration. Wjile many parents were nice I felt the officiating was less then balanced. We didnt ice the best possible team as a few of our best players couldnt go so we ended up with 3 house kids basically. Unfortunately ifwe had the missing 3 kids I dont think the oofficiating would have been a factor. I dont think I would bother going again unless we can ice a true team.

Micah had 3 goals and 2 assists and drew probably 70-75% of the teams power plays. The boy was chopped tackled, tripped and crosschecked so many times driving the net. In the fourth game he was on the ice for the last 4 minutes and busted his a$s trying to get the tie. In the very first game after going down 5-0 he had a beautiful open ice hip check where he flipped the kid and skated straight to the box as the whistle blew. Trying to find video. It was one of those mouth open moments followed by some laughing once the other kid popped back up. One of his coaches in the locker room said it was a great hit and gave the kids a spark.

At the end of the month we are doing the Carmen Starr tournament in Los Angeles with a different team. This team has two other kids from the Vancouver team on it. The team is more balanced, but I dont know that its better. I am thinking this was kind of a waste as M is not a regular with this group and the coaches will only see him for 2 practices before the tournament. As such I am guessing he will get stuck on the 3rd line unless he goes off in the first 2 games of the tourney

We were at tryouts locally tonight. Skipped all the other clubs, more so just timing related to comp soccer for the little one and the LM making the U....and we knew where we wanted to play(getting a little hard push not withstanding) But she crushed day one, assume she will move from a kid on the team, to a "player"... Sundays games are El Segundo at 945am and Paramount (right next to the lovely city of Compton) at 4pm. Possible game monday if we finish 2nd or 1st. Not holding breath.

He got asked to play in the Junior Olympics qualifier in Corona for roller this weekend as well. A club approached us and said if he coukd play a couple of games they would love to have him. So we may play in some games Saturday morning and Monday. Sunday games are out as they conflict with ice. He seemed uninterested when I told him. Lol

That was the longest hockey weekend of my life. I cant beleive how much I drove. The end result was pretty amazing. This group of NorCal 05s went down and smacked around teams from Arizona Alaska and SoCal. Even had to overcome a little BS when certain SoCal Club sent out a mix team of kids from multiple clubs half in practice jerseys with kids from teams we had played already. Still beat them. The boys destroyed the first 4 teams they played but in the 5th game we played at Paramount. An Olympic size sheet with water patches and soft ice. The boys play a quick tape to tape passing game. On the Olympic sheet with bad ice it was a series of miss passes and errors that saw them go down 0-3. They scored 3 in the third to tie it up but then lost in overtime when one of our D man crapped the bed falling down at the point resulting in a breakaway goal. That set up a rematch for the final. The final was a 5-3 win which we largely dominated. 2 goals came when the second string goalie was put it and gave up 2 very very soft goals. As a whole the 2nd team from AZ we played was classes as were the parents and im glad we won. Multiple kids didnt shake hands, they had to be stopped from hitting our kids gear on the ice with their sticks and the parents had a million excuses for the loss. Our kids played clean hockey taking very few penalties all tournament.

So after the Grafs ended up being too big I took what I thought was the safe route and ordered 28ks (the new 16k replacement as 30k is 18k and ribcor is 20k)to replace is 18ks which are falling apart. He is *****ing about the heel being sloppy. Im guessing they changed the heel fit in the redisign. We were tempted to go Bauer Supreme 170s, but he had lace bite on the top and didnt think starting with Bunga Pads on brand new skates was the best option. This kid is such a diva with his skates.

Reebok is supposed to be pulling the plug on hockey this year. Really worried CCM wont replace the Reebok fit profile with a new line. The RBZ line has to much arch for him and unless you get the actual $400 RBZ skate the boots are really soft. The Tacks are supposed to fit like vapors. So im hoping they create a 3rd line like Bauer. Hope I wont have to buy a bunch of skates and stockpile them.

Awesome man. Something so awesome about watching your kid have fun and score at this game.

Ej he skated on the 28ks and he was sloppy. Going to need to rebake and get the heel a lot tighter. Tied them up Ieft them with the heel area compressed. Going to need to get a much better heel lock. So weird as 18ks had a much tighter heel. This crap drives me nuts. I am making these work as everything else is fine

So practices are in full swing for us here. We tried out and made the Sharks 05 team. Team is very deep and very fast. Even though its a first year squirt team which usually plays B it appears everyone thinks the team will play A level. They were discussing travel plans. Apparently we will do at least one SoCal tournament and one tournament in Colorado. There is a tournament in Oregon I want to go to as Canadian teams tend to come down but it doesn't look like we will be going. One of the big plusses about this team is the director of hockey operations son is on the team so we seem to be getting extra ice. Both this week and next we are getting 4 practices. Some are split ice, but I cant complain about 4 skates a week.

YES!!!! Took pulling her out of school for a half day and some begging, as they tried to cut the line off 1 person before the Little One was up for her pic, but Mom made it happen!!!! The Little One was soooooooo excited!

Big thanks to Trevor Lewis for bringing the Cup back to SLC!!!

Freaking sweet.
So we are almost done with preseason here. 2 more games this weekend. The 05 Squirt team is 4-0 with a 37-7 goal differential. It should be 39-4 but you always get a little jobbed playing in certain teams barns. It looks like we will be moved to the A division because we have beaten the 2 A division teams we have played, but Norcal threw 2 more A division teams at us this weekend. It looks like they are hoping for a slip up to find an excuse to not let a group of 05s in the 04 division. Tomorrow they are playing the 2nd best team in the A division on paper. Sunday we are playing alower A division team that tied a team we beat last weekend.

Our line configurations are interesting. 1st line has weak center with 2 strong wingers. 2nd line is Ms line with him at center and a strong right winger. His left winger is our weak kid. 3rd line is similar to 2nd. Our D pairings are one strong with one weak. Basically given this make up we have 3 really good kids on the ice at any given moment and 2 kids that generally do more good then harm, but not always.

Tomorrow will be a big game for the boys. The team much like last weekends 04 opponent is bigger then our boys. That said our team is very fast, passes well and a lot, and shoots well. This is how they have been successful so far. Our big problem is our weaker kids dont play positional hockey well so the others cant go all out for fear of getting burned. Even with that they have been successful. We will see what happens.

Focking long season already. In reality once we got bumped up into higher division all the kids we play against are 1 year older and all played travel last year. Our crap kids our getting worked like mules on the ice all gane long. M and 3 other boys are scoring but thats pretty much it and 2 of them are defensemen. Too good to play our age level. Not quiet good enough to play older kids because our weak kids get exposed badly.

Took a beating from the number 2 team today. 2-1 after 2 periods. 7-1 by the end. Sucked because M had some great chances but could not finish anything today. In a way its good. Some of the boys have never been on a losing team so its teaching them a lot.

Can't believe it's been almost a year since I posted here. My kid got a spot in Pittsburgh, but it was evident from the start that the team had issues. By the middle of December the team was down to 10 skaters and they had a vote whether or not to play that final weekend before Christmas break. We ended up making the decision to pull him off of that team and got him rostered on the U18 team back in Cincy...makes me sad things didn't work out in Pittsburgh :(

Sorry about the team issues, Scott. Hope you have a positive experience with the Cincy team!

I feel for you, choosing programs/teams can be so tough and so fluid, it's nuts. Just trying to put your kid where they are comfortable & have a chance to be successful, it's nuts. Positive JuJu to your son, I'm sure he'll crush wherever he's at!

EJ still cant believe hes come so far from when we girst started talking. So Crazy. I know Abbs been tearing it up also.

Scott that really sucks. What age level was the Pittsburgh team? We had to pull M off a team as a Mite because of a psycho coach but im sure its nothing like what you went through.

As for M the team has gotten better. The house kids we had to have are improving and some of the selfish kids have bought in to passing the puck. We tied our last league game and have a chance against both teams we are playing this weekend. We scrimmed a Peewee B team last week and smacked them around. In fairness that team sucked.

Lastly just like last year he got asked to play in the narch winter nationals roller tournament for his old inline Jr Sharks team. Thats next weekend. Should be fun and hopefully they win it all again.

Tier 1 U16. He had friends in Pittsburgh (4 hours away for us) and he wanted to play Spring Hockey there. Mario Lemiuex's brother Alain owns the Selects and coached the U16 National team last year and a guy named Gallis coached the American team. Alain coached the Spring team and was impressed with Cam. So, Spring went well and we looked into fall teams and made the decision to try out over there (I also do some business in that area so I made arrangements to combine work with practices).

During tryouts Gallis left and went to another organization, and Lemiuex decided to coach U12 since most of his National team were 97's and moving up to U18. It wasn't a huge deal because Cam still knew some of the kids that made the Selects team so we stuck with it. But it was obvious early on that other than Cam and 1 other kid, none of the boys had played Tier 1 before.

So the team wasn't great and even that wasn't a huge deal, Cam got tons of ice time and exposure in a different part of the country from where we were used to. He even got a call from a college coach that happened to see him play in Rochester NY one weekend.

Right away the team had issues with injuries, and I mean lots of them. I lost count of all the 'consussions' and players out for weeks at a time. It never got better. So in the end I left it up to him and he decided he wanted to play closer to home. We had already talked about next year and he was going to try out for the Cincy U18 team anyway, so I got kinda lucky and they had a spot open and already knew Cam from being in that organization for 5 years so they added him onto the roster to finish out this season.

Shes such a monster. Two teams. Her motor must be insane. We have a kid on his team whos a ranked 1or 2 in the nation for wrestling. He travels all over the country. Kids motor is like abbys I bet.

Sarnia is just over the border from Detroit. Not to excited about it. We have to go there next month in miserable conditions Im sure then we are in Columbus in February for a Tier event. Even though we are not supposed to be tier till next year the organization wants them to participate .

Hes playing D currently . His coach has done this 2 years now. He starts the season at center, then plays a game or 2 at wing. Then plays 1/3 the season as D before going back to center. I guess its part of the ADM model. M is bored as hell back there as hes only averaging a goal a game now . Kind of annoying as only the stronger skaters have to do it. The weaker skaters get a pass.

Almost unbelievable start for the Little One with the girls. Has 35 goals in 12 games(a 12U playing 15U). Gets shut down regularly after the 1st, not to mention getting a shadow defender regularly(this happens with the boys as well). Wish we lived in Boston or Minnesota, would be fun to compete with far better competition & girls her age(though the girls are great friends, she’s fine age wise).

Found the last 3 P46 sticks in Quebec. Hit all the stores in the area. Also found a Warrior W71 curve is so close and still in production. My understanding is that its a Malkin pro stock clone.

Quebec was a lot of fun. Boys made it to Quarters but were eliminated by a very solid Quebec area team that lost in the championship.

We just finished up states and did better then expected. Beat the Jr. Kings once and then lost to them with 6 seconds left in the 3rd very close game. If we had beaten them we would have made the finals. Kings won states.

He started playing roller again. Playing for middle school. Also playing on a travel team that is all kids from his Jr. Sharks team.

Already panicked about next years tryouts.

Today was cut day. M survived. We lost 5 skaters from last years team and it was a very hard day. A very succesfull AA club in the area had a mass defection to our club. We had 1 kid from our team who is now going to boarding school and 1 who moved away before tryouts. So in all 7 new skaters to the team. This time of year is the absolute worse i felt so bad for 2 of the boys that my eyes got a little watery when I saw them getting pulled aside before the list was posted. Those boys had been on the team for 4 years. Having to tell your child I know hes your friend but at tryouts you have no friends on the other side just sucks. M smoked one of the kids who was cut a few times.

M has been playing a lot of baseball lately as well. Hes been on some tournament teams and its so different from hockey. Here in Cali there are so many travel ball teams and not making a team just means you make a different team. There is so much less stress with baseball. I had prepared M for the worst and told him he would be able to play more ball and we wouldnt be as broke. He was a ball of nerves all weekend and tried to mask his happiness when he found out.

Being a hockey parent is tough. On the flip side now that its bantams I get to worry about concussions. The 04 team had a kid who got 3 last year and cant play anymore. Hes done permanetly. Well theres always baseball.

Bought a SPARX sharpening machine. This thing is awesome, should have done it years ago.
Deciding factor was Pure Hockey(our only shop) said they were going to a flat $10 rate for a sharpen. I don’t remember the last time I paid for a sharpen and that’s good, because I never knew what I was walking out with half the time. Oldtimers at the shop, the ones I knew were fine(most of them), but there is so much turnover and never knew what you were walking into. When that happened, was a coin flip.
Abs skates were sharpened at Pure on Thursday and I put the edge checker on them before running them through the SPARX and couldn’t believe how far off the edges were. Took 8 passes with the SPARX to get them even.
LM is coming over this morning to run his skates through(we have a drop in at 12:30 today). Going to check his edges before. Though he’s terrible about keeping his skates clean.

Very cool I found this. I played hockey from age 4 through high school. I played for lots of teams over the years manly AA and single A travel teams. Played high school and won 2 back2back state championships. Hockey was my life when I was young. I figured out young hockey and golf were my sports and I was damn good at both. I was one of the top ranked juniors in WV as a kid. I had a few college hockey offers but manly golf with schools all over the country wanting me. Manly d2 a few smaller D1 schools though. I didn’t want to go far from home and signed with a local D2 school with a pretty good golf scholarship. I miss hockey everyday and going to the rink. I’ve played a few throw back nights and can’t tell you the feeling of getting back on skates. There’s nothing like hockey because you can go throw a football or go shoot hoops anywhere.

On the ice or motorcycle? Are you hanging up the skates or just healing up?

That sucks, I did not know that... Sounds painful, hope the recovery has gone well.... You were playing multiple leagues/nights a week, right?

I was playing on 3 teams, E.J., averaging 3-4 games a week. Last summer, took a check and had an awkward fall, broke the fibula, the ankle dislocated and my foot turned 180 degrees.

A week later they did surgery, plate and 6 titanium screws in my fibula, 8 weeks off my feet and then another 6 in a walking boot.

Leg seems to be completely healed, the issue seems to be the ligaments. A year after surgery and my ankle is no where near what it was. I fear my competitive days may be over, hoping maybe to get it good enough to play in an over-40 league or a house league at some point.

Probably a lot more info than you wanted, but there it is anyway. :r

Wow. 3 years since I last posted here, and a year since anyone posted in this thread!

My kid is starting his senior year at EKU but it's looking bad for hockey. They are definitely not playing the first semester and hoping to play by the second.

In his Sophomore year, he had the biggest game of his life, 'The Bourbon Barrel' is an annual contest between EKU and UK, since they are so close together and share a rink. UK is a much bigger school and honestly a better hockey team.

Here's a clip, the game was tied and EKU was on the PK. Cam stole the puck and flew down to score shorthanded on his former U16 teammate to take the lead, which held up and EKU won the game.

They even did a post-game interview with Cam:

Here's the most recent pic of me and him, hockey related that is. We flew up from Florida to see him play last year (2019), sadly we've yet to get to more that 1 game each year.

You must be very proud of Cam, Scott, and that short handed GWG is a lifetime memory. Hope hockey is able to start back up soon.

It was the little lady & didn’t finish. It’s tough to win a Tier 1 tournament, or even get in Championship, frustrated to lose that one. Think they were better, but guess not Monday.

She already dumped her “second place” medal. Those don’t matter for her...

Fun run, 4 straight weekends on road, one blitz(practice) weekend, then Dallas(tournament), Minnesota (Showcase) & Detroit (tournament). Played for two championships, lost both games. But all said, started 10 in our 1st raking and currently sitting at 14th in the Tier 1 rankings, things could be worse. Maybe they are, both the pup and I were tested for COVID today. She’s pretty junked. I just feel hungover, but haven’t had drinks since Sunday. Should know in 24-36 hours. Send positive thoughts.

***I’ll add, yes, that’s pushing things and so, this shouldn’t be some crazy surprises. Mom is a nurse and we’re and cautious as can be, other than travel. No restaurant, no big gatherings, masks. But roll dice....we’ll see.

Congrats on quite the run for your daughter, hope she didn't dump these 2nd place medals.

Saying prayers for both of you.
