Thanks Al, I don't know who was happier. :)
Sitting here killing time....up at 4:30 am to take Jackson to drop in. I have watched SportsCenter, drank a boatload of coffee, read the newspaper & still have 2 hours until I have to take the Little One to school.....
I am interested to see how the first skate with the One100's......

My kid hasn't been on the ice in almost 2 weeks. Regular season ended and of course the Spring 4v4 and Spring/Summer Clinic started, which would have had us in the rink 3 times a week.
But...
The kid opted out of Spring hockey (2 days a week) in order to practice and participate in Track this year. He is loving Track and doing well, thanks to the last 3 years of dry-land hockey training, he is very fast.
The weird part is that I miss going to the rink a lot more than I thought I would. I'm having Hockey Parent Withdrawal Symptoms!

JEEZ where have I heard this before. Hmmmm wait I know I have heard this. ooooooo yeah my kid. First I kept the boots loose because I was worried about foot pain. Said boot too loose, ankles needed to be punched. 6 year old asking to have inner ankle punched. I just sat there with this wtf look on my face. This kid gets run over by a big kid and pops up like nothing. However he is a diva about his skates and will bitc& non stop about them hurting. Day two tighten up the boot. Now I get "dad my foot hurts bad and ankle still hurts." He says he is on his heals too much also. Well atleast they were cheap and I think I can move them for about what I paid. looks like we will just go Reebok like his roller hockey boots or back to the Grafs. I know the Reeboks work. He saw the new 20k and 18k Reeboks. He liked the 18k look. Need to figure this out. That summer team tryout is in a few weeks.
What was funny was his coach sees the skates the first day. Looks at me laughs and says dude thats not going to work. This is his third year coaching my kid and our kids ard friends. I want to give it one more shot. He doesnt want to:r
Took him to drop in this morning at 5:00 AM again, waiting to hear how the skates felt today. Assume a little better. Interesting note, a guy that goes to morning drop in commented that he thought Tuesday was the best he’d seen Jackson skate….maybe it wasn’t psychological. He was in new skates, socks and jersey….that with the Caribbean vacation may have just put him in a groove….;)

New stick for the Little One arrived yesterday(replacement for a snapped APX).

Summer team tryout this friday. Wonder if he will make it. Starting to think no. Looks like they are going to try to take only kids who are 7 or 8. Wont be 7 till mid October so not looking good. If not will do in house and the Hawks summer skate program. Not sure about a camp. He doesnt seem to want to do a camp.

holy crap is that summer or regular season?
Most areas don't have tryouts till end of July after camps etc.
Was at the roller hockey rink tonight selling some mouthguards. In fairness the facility is huge with three rinks. Got approached by the coach of the best 8U team. Asked if we want to play for them next year.

These were tryouts for next season. Most teams around here, from Tier 1 on down have their tryouts scheduled and posted right as regular seasons are ending.
Ours was actually one of the later tryouts. The two other Tier 1 teams in the region, Columbus and Indy have already had their tryouts for next year.

The summer thing may be the reason. We have virtually zero hockey activity after Spring Hockey ends in May. Regular ice practice for the season starts again in late August.
Our team does dry-land at least 2 times a week throughout the summer, with as much open-ice time as they can find on the weekends, which is usually once per weekend.
We have reg season tryouts here soon as well. Been talking with the Regulators & Jr. Grizzlies. U14 & U16 Regulator tryouts are actually this weekend. No date on U18, though sounds like Jackson may start training with the U18's and see how it goes. Though I think regardless, he'll skate in the Jr. Grizzlies tryout in June.
He's skating in the Jr. Grizzlies Spring Ice right now as well. Hoping to get in the tryouts of the U18 Utah All Stars Summer League. Have talked with them, but their plans are coming together slower than expected, should know more Thursday.
High School Summer starts in May. I've been approached about being the HS Hockey team trustee....
Little One is in Skills Clinic once a week, alonge with private power skating once a week. Summer 3-3 Starts in June...
Thought this was the off season.....:r:r:r

Soccer 945-1045
Baseball 12-2
Hockey 515-615
He made the summer team last night.
Not sure we are going to do it. The practices are Tuesday night and Sunday morning. Its a 40 min drive. Told the coach we were not sure. He is letting Micah come out and practice for free for a while no strings. He said we dont have to do the to Socal tourneys and can just do the local stuff.
Summer is looking like this.
Saturday Morning skills skate at Sharks Ice with former Shark player and hockey director Curtis Brown
Hawks skills skate 2x per week days vary
Summer team or just inhouse games.
Down goes another APX.....:gary
So the question/dilemma is this, getting 3-5 hours ice time a week, I should just be happy that he is getting 8 weeks out of a stick and pull out the AMEX...or think, this stick is fragile and look at something else?
He loves this stick, I just wish it'd last a bit longer... He'll, his 7 y/o sister snapped her APX within 2 months.... Though our sample is small, maybe just bad luck with the snap... Both his cracked in the blade....
Thoughts?

I am probably under estimating his ice time.... Hell, he has had 5 hours of ice time in the past 24 hours. 3 hours last night(Jr. Grizzlies Spring Ice) and 2 this morning(drop in).
Bauer is out and Sher-Wood is in....at least at the moment....

Every single kid we know that had an APX has broken it. 13 year old kids, and one of those was a pretty small 13!
Since my kid broke his, around New Years I think, he has used a Stealth RS, and he claims he likes it better than the APX, not quite as lightweight but it's close.
At the final night of tryouts last night, a boy broke his RS. Ironically he was the reason my kid ended up with an RS in the first place. This other boy hated the non-grip RS so his dad sold it to us for 70 bucks and bought him one with grip. He broke that sucker almost in half last night.
I laughed at/with the dad for a few, but he wasn't quite as amused as I was. My kid will probably break his next week!
RS and APX are virtually the same price, but for what we've seen, the RS holds up a little better.
:2
Scott, I had the RS & Mako in the cart at different times, before going with the Nexon12. I have yet to talk with someone who didn't like the t90, save for the weight... Thought maybe the Nexon would solve the weight issue...
Guess we'll find out quick how this experiment turned out....

From what I have read the mako is the successor to the SE16 arguably the most popular stick Easton ever made. M5 is replacement to the ST I think. RS is lighter and seems to have best kick. Mako has best blade feel.
Saw the stuff about nexion looks interesting.
The boy has really become a fan of the Miken accuflex and has definitely learned to shoot well with it.
Hes playing in a cross ice tournament this weekend. Name of the team. The Ringers. Lol. Some dad we know asked him to play. Name fits the team.

They beat everyone in the tourney. Issue was we had two kids who decided cross checking was a legitimate hockey play. Got a little ugly.
You know you have signed your kid up for two much stuff when you have two day a week when you have to decide what to go to.
That Summer team is practicing 4 days a week this month for the tournamanet Memorial Day weekend. Tuesday, Friday, Saturday (afternoon), Sunday. I told the coach yesterday we wont be doing either SoCal trip and cant make all the practices. Told him we will do local games. Seems like he wants him for next season.
we signed him up for Soccer classes Friday and Saturday(morning) a while back which he likes.
He has the skills skate with Curtis Brown right after Soccer Saturday mid morning.
There is the Hawks skills skate which days change weekly. We didnt sign up because they allow drop ins.
Then there is Sharks summer inhouse games only which is Saturday afternoons he wants to do as he has some good friends playing.
This doesnt start till next month after the memorial tourney.
Now some of these things end before others, but I need to sit down with a damn spread sheet and figure out what the hell we can and cant do.
We have reg season tryouts here soon as well. Been talking with the Regulators & Jr. Grizzlies. U14 & U16 Regulator tryouts are actually this weekend. Man, my head is SPINNING......... So I was told a month or so ago, Jackson would be a U18 kid.... After talking with a guy today, he was saying...."No, he'll be a U16 kid."
I have ANOTHER email out trying to get more clarification and cannot seem to google an answer..... WHAT IS THE AGE BREAKDOWN???????
He is 15 as of today.....he turns 16 mid June.... Birth year '96..... So January 1st 2013 he will be 16 years old...

High School Summer league starts tonight.... I do love Summer Hockey....there is something special about watching hockey in shorts, tshirts and flip flops....
These pics suck... I was in the PB and did my best.... I was pretty worried about this team we were playing, returned their top 9-10 guys from a better than average team last year, including their two goalies. We were breaking in a freshman goalie, playing his first game and the only one on our team at present....
Anyway....we CRUSHED them.... 10-3 and I don't think it was that close. I think it was a 50/50 thing, we may be a little better than I thought and they are worse than I thought....

Different one, not sure what it is....will ask him. VERY clear, not sure where he got it....
Watching the Little One in a Skills Clinic Camp she has been going to, amazed at her progression this past year, night and day... I actually was sort of shaking my head watching...
Same with JB, I had not watched him skate a ton since the end of the regular season last year.... Kid is jumping...
It really floors me the pride and enjoyment I get from sitting here on a hard aluminum stadium bench, watching this stuff....day in, day out, night in, night out, morning..... The driving, the time & financial commitment...wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe I'd wish for cheap ice time & great $20 sticks...

Thankfully baseball is almost over. Constantly having to pick what to go to.
My kid wanted to participate in Track this spring, so that pretty much cut out Spring Hockey, and he missed a few Wednesday Clinics, but in the end I'm glad he chose Track. It gave him a little break from hockey, kept him active, and he bonded with a whole new set of athletes.
Most of the season he ran relays, with a few individual events sprinkled in. He's a 7th grader, but was able to hang with the 8th graders, I'm sure because of his previous hockey dry land training. He was the starter for the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays almost every event.
Only on the very last meet, the championships, he got a charlie-horse in his butt that hurt, so he pulled out of the 4x400. The team went on to win it anyway, and it gave 4 8th graders the chance to finish strong as a group. Most of the season there were 2 8th graders who were battling for the 4th spot on the 4x400 team, we were actually glad they didn't have to chose between them, they were all great kids.
So now Hockey Dry Land kicks in full speed, and with Track being over, its perfect timing. Cam's Track coaches made the choice to keep all the medals for the season and hand them out when it had ended. Since we don't have a "Being a Track Parent" thread, here is my kid with his medals, they are all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place relay medals:

Nice Scott. Got my kid swimming almost everyday now trying to build legs and stamina.
Todays a good test. Summer team practice a bunch of kids were fighting, not mine. BAG SKATE! These kids are getting worked but he's hanging with the big boys. 20+ minutes of really hard skating.
Now he's explaining life to them and why everyone gets punished. Good stuff. He looks over at me and I'm laughing.
Just dropped the LM off at Regulators tryouts.... Not sure if I made a mistake letting him skate with the U18's before the U16 tryouts. The U18 coach told him to come to both, my assumption is that he is worried about his U18 numbers and sees my son as a body. Would hate for him to get worked for the first session and then go into his session gassed.....
Well, it's done now and tomorrow the sessions are split by 4-6 hours or something like that.... Think I'll go back and watch the last half of the U16 session and see what I think.
Well that went even better than expected.... Assume he's a Regulator if we want....

Is the Mako = to the ST? It is that stinking slapshot... He kills it, but because he isn't buying sticks, he doesn't worry about firing 50 a practice... I fear that we'll be doing this again and again and again....

We actually signed him up for summer league inhouse just so he could play with this kid. The two of them terrorized mite inhouse summer game today. He's always played with older kids and it has created weird issues at times. Recently he was invited to a kid turning nine birthday who he played inhouse with this year. We ended up not taking him which created a little riff which I was suprised by.
^^^Nice, Mike... Just seeing this. The Dynamic Duo, soon to be popping nets in an arena near you!
Little One is on the ice for the first time in 2 weeks.
The Big One's team takes on the defending State Champs tonight. Should give a good idea of where they are at....
Ohhhhh that was a SWEET win!!! LM was a plus 2 & didn't allow a goal. Just a solid game at the blue line, against a very good team. Wins like this are soooo fun!
Bad news, HS team lost on Monday. Looked slow and the goalie the faced(brought in, not on the team) was a MONSTER, kid will be playing out of State come Fall.

Sorry about the loss, nice on the new twig. Good to see them step up.
That's crazy summer hockey starts so late there. Our tinker here are all about profit so hockey never stops.
Current Schedule which started last week:
Monday Hawks Skills Skate, Tuesday Cougars summer team skate, Thursday HawksSS, Friday Soccer, Saturday (all three things with new best friend) 9am roller, 11am Sharks Skills Skate, 2pm inhouse games, Sunday soccer or ice or nothing what ever he picks. Crazy thing is he wants to always do something. Thus schedule will hold till end of July when tryouts happen. I can't wait for tryouts. I am getting burnt
Got new jets lastnight. Kid on his summer team came back from anahiem with a pair. Ordered from anahiem ice rink with sharpening and heel lifts installed.

Side note Al, Scott, EJ need some feedback.
Last Sunday his summer team played another team that was good.
Micah scored a goal on a nice wrap around move.
My issue came when prior to that he went offsides bad on a breakaway and got basically yelled at by the coach loudly. He calls him out and then starts yelling asking if he knows what offsides is. Then right before the faceoff he yanks him off the ice and sits him for two shifts. He did sit down with him and talk with him, but I was a little suprised. I know its a team of mostly 8 year olds, but he's the one who wanted him on the team. We wanted just practices. He wanted him to play.
Did he not expect a kid who is literally 6.5 this month to brain fart occasionally?
I'm not sure about next year now. I had considered his team an option. I am not sure now. In practice often goes out of his way to help Micah understand drills. If he does yell at him he will generally go over and explain things. I just don't know. Micah is an emotional kid. While physically tough he gets worked up when adults reprimand him.
Any of you guys dealt with a coach who yells at the kids and how did it effect your kid.
Tough call. I have not personally had to deal with it and even at 15, I know my son does not respond well to yelling... Not in sports or at home.
I think you discuss it with Micah and see how he feels about it. You could discuss it with the coach as well, explaining what you just said here, how he may not be at an age that he can process that type of direction and see if the coach has the ability to work around it, which is 50/50 at best IMO.
Usually coaches are pretty locked in to how they do stuff, not intentionally, it is just their make up. I think it is few and far between those that recognize who responds to what and play both sides of the fence.
Have to get back into court.... That is the quick, condensed....:sh

I don't think any of Cam's coaches yelled more than you'd expect them to when he was younger, but he didn't play high level hockey until his Peewee years (10 years old I think?)
Since then, what I've heard hasn't been over the top except one time in particular, and I addressed that with the coach immediately after the game. For the last 2 years I've worked the game clock and music for our home games, so I was right there, next to the boys.
When I say over the top, I mean yelling in a personal manner, degrading the kid. Not necessarily just yelling. Our coaches yell a lot, but it's mainly on the fly line and strategy stuff. Last year my kid got hurt on a shift and when he came back he asked the coach to sit one shift and the coach kind of went nuts with "Are you kidding me?" type of comments.
After that game I let the coach have it, and made sure we were on the same page when it came to something like that happening again. My kid doesn't cry wolf, if he gets hurt and has to mention it during the game, then he is really hurt.
I'm not the greatest when it comes to dealing with confrontation with the coaches, I'm usually more passionate about the situations than my kid would be. I think maybe at your kids age, it certainly isn't out of bounds for you to talk to the coach, at least to make sure you are both on the same page when it comes to how your kid reacts and responds to his coaching style.
Fun night on the ice..... The Little One was not 100%, feeling a bit under the weather, but went out and played well. 4-5 goals and skated well. I think her positioning was off, assume the soccer had her playing too far away from the net.... But it is a transition that will come with a few more times out there. Really like her coach and we're playing with some friends as well, so it is going to be a good few months.

As for the coach situation he is well aware of micahs not doing well with being yelled at. That's why he seems to always go over and talk with him after he yells. From his perspective I guess he can't play favorites. I am going to leave it alone for now. Micah seemed unaffected by it when we tapped.
As for next year I am leaning towards pushing for a Hawks redshirt if we can get it. I don't think I want to do full blown travel at age 7 next season. I don't think there is enough benefit. I just want him to do the practices. We got asked about playing for the new official Jr sharks inline team for next year. We may do that. Apparently its going to be a sponsored team .

My daughter is through her first set of skating lessons. She said she was going to play hockey, but one look at the figure skating outfits, and that went out the window. Yay me. :)
Good day/night.... Heard we are a go on the travel team we tried out for last week, so 2-2 with one team to go before we make a decision. Haven't even discussed it much with the Little Man, just letting it settle in, I guess....
Good night on the ice for the Little One... Man she is moving the puck like I have never seen before.... Goals down, assists WAY UP....

new pants for the little man. JrSmall. Actually there european size 120, but same as small.
A touch big, but his youth Large are too small. Pant sizes are a bit*h at this tween point. Just over 4feet at 6.5 yrs old.
I love these pants though. Built just like Tacklas and Eagles. Super protective while being very mobile.
Edit
Forgot to mention european cut is definitely good for skinny kids. His youth large ccms needed suspenders. These fit great in the waist and could go tighter
Looking good! Nice game face....:) Agree, pants are a bit of a pain....ran into issues moving from Easton to Bauer and the sizing difference....
How'd you like to be listed as the first alternate....:gary

Still in a holding pattern to see if Jackson gets a spot on Coach Oly's team or plays with the lower level. I'd say AAA and AA, but in truth, they are lot listing it like that. They are saying a combined AA/AAA, which they will enter tourneys as AAA or AA, depending on the talent level of the tourney. Then an “Elite” team that travels a little less, not sure what level of competition they will enter tourneys as…..
I was not at the parents meeting or any of the tryout stuff(out of town on a bike ride), so I don’t know what the story is, other than Jackson went in trying out for what we thought was the AA squad and got run on what we thought was the AAA squad, then they stated the above breakdown and ???? Paraphrasing what the trustee apparently said during the parents meeting. “Everyone around here just puts AA/AAA behind their name and assumes that is the level of hockey they are. Nobody is regulating that, you are what you say you are. We try to be realistic as to what we are putting on the ice, the fact is, we cannot compete with AAA teams back East and have found that out in the past, so we are not going to be listing ourselves as AAA or AA, we will have a Select and an Elite team.”
After day 2(of three) of the Jr. Grizzly tryouts, Jackson said if he didn’t make the AAA/AA, he was going to sign with the Golden Eagles(personally, my third choice, but he has friends that signed with them). He had offers from the AA Golden Eagles & AA Regulators.
Sometime after the tryout day 3 and meeting with the coaches, he decided to sign with the Grizzlies, so he is a Utah Jr. Grizzly player as of Sunday. I think after meeting with the coach, he felt really good about his plans. The question remains, if he will stay on the lower squad or get called up. As they explained, getting called up could happen within 48 hours(another kid doesn’t sign) or later, if someone gets hurt ect.
It is a ying/yang thing. I think the ice time(three 90 minute practices a week) under Oly & better competition would be huge for development. BUT the financial commitment and probability that his actual ice time in games would be limited, are a downside. Going to Chicago and Wisconsin with Oly would be pretty cool as well. His son plays for the Blackhawks and the kids get to go to a game if they’re in town, meet his son and some players ect, or at least have in the past.
Ahhhhh….whatever happens, happens…. He’s having fun and that is what counts…. Well, he loves playing hockey, he said the tryout was as tough as anything he has ever done. His mother said it was brutal physically(she is a marathon runner/triathlete) and the tension/pressure on the kids, trying to make the upper team could be felt in the air. It was NOTHING like the Eagles or Regulators tryouts, Oly is business.
How’s that for a novel….

Guy should get a 5 year suspension at a minimum....maybe lifetime.
If any of you watch and don't look further, he was flipping off the crowd in front of the kids as well. What an asshat.....
LM had surgery on his hand, so he's off the ice for the week.... Seems like a bit since I have shot pictures of him. The High School could have used him last night.... CRUSHED by a longtime rival. Without him, another top D, their best player and a kid I have mentioned before with concussion Hx that got dinged again last night in the first and didn't play the rest of the game.....it was shooting fish in a barrel..... Meh....it's just seeding for the playoffs....

How many concussions has that kid had?
I thought they pull the plug after 3?
Since I have been around, at least 2 that have caused him to miss a game/games. One that ended his ’11 playoff run. Then got one the first game of the '11 Summer Season(3 months later?) Made it all last year(regular season) without any issues.
I am not sure what the story is with this, if it is actually a documented concussion or he just got dinged(isn’t that a concussion?)…. He may have just sat to be on the safe side, I didn’t get any details. I guess we’ll see if he sits the rest of the Summer Season….
I have no idea what the point of no return is and hope I never have to experience that with either of my kids. I really feel for the kid. I remember correctly, the first one, was from being boarded.

We don't have a ton of Spring/Summer action going on, but my kid just finished camp in Buffalo this week, we were able to make it up there in time on the last day to see the final game. He got to play center for most of it, which he loves. I always try to get the timing just right on the shots of the faceoffs, and this one worked out pretty well. The poor kid in yellow is kinda looking like "Where did the puck go!?!?!?!?!"

Little man went from raping inhouse last night to being 3rd line on his summer travel team tonight. He literally got yelled at inhouse last night for not passing and going end to end. They started notkind counting his goals unless he passed. Guess thats life hes the youngest kid on thethe travel team and plays hesitant at times. Something his coach says will change by mid season next year. I poked at the coach saying he doesnt want him yelling at him again. :r
In other words hes already on the team if he wants it. He nd his buddy are both in. Thats nice as its what they wanted. The team isI going toto be so stacked. His buddys dad got confirmation the two boys will make the inline team I mentioned earlier also.

Might be how they do things in Norway or where ever he was from. My kid introduced me to him and another boy, saying "They're Icelandic!" So I don't know exactly which country, his name was Olafsson. There were several boys from Russia as well, and a ton of Canadians at that camp.

What was the surgery for?
Trigger finger.
Not common to have it this young, or apparently on the pinky/ring as opposed to the thumb, index....???
It was both his pinky and ring and he couldn't pull them to a fist, if it finally happened, they locked in tight and it hurt like Hell. He'd have to pull them out/open with this other hand....

Tryouts next weekend. Actually giving him a lot of down time this week. He doesn't like it. Doing a pretryout clinic Mon Tues Wed next week.

I carry a gun for a living. Someone would get a very close look at a few of my guns if that ever happened. :r.
There is a house a few streets down that has a kid with drums. I can't describe the noise not music I have heard emanate from that garage. We are likely going to buy both electric and accoustic. The advantage of electric is that rocksmith game u can run through pc .which we have one hooked up to tv in living room.
Hey on that note. Looking at getting http://quickstickz.com/ for Christmas. Anybody played with it?
Just finished up the Summer 3-3 season for the Little One. The guy that was coaching them at the end had some really kind words for me. Hearing glowing remarks re: your kids never gets old....
The Little Man hasn't had a game in forever, but they take the ice again this Wednesday. He's also doing Sunday ice sessions and I signed him up for a camp that he did last year, again this year(it's this week). It is cheap and looks like Trevor Lewis is going to show up, so what the Hell....
Just finished camp, when to watch the scrimmage and they were already done. LM had fun, got to meet Trevor Lewis, snapped a Warrior Widow....

First day of tryouts tonight.
He should make the team, the coach let him play and practice with the team all summer for almost nothing and already said he would make it. Time will tell if he was honest or not. We brought in 4 other kids with travel experience who he liked. 2 were second years so it will be interesting to see if he takes them over my son and his buddy.
They did a pre tryout clinic this week. Was funny to watch all the parents stressing and kissing the coaches ass after each session. Funny part was the guy running it was not the coach of team. Will try to take a photo or two. Tryouts are 3 days in a row.

We will see.
TBH it would be easier on us if he didn't make it. Less travel, less money. He's supposed to play for that travel roller team with his buddy who's doing this tryout with him. My wife isn't to excited about travel roller. She doesn't see the point and I am kind of with her. He also wants to play inhouse with his other buddy and for his dad who has coached him the past 3 years. It's the last year they can play together before it becomes alternating years.
So how'd it end up, Mike?
The Little Man got banged up in a checking clinic that he went to last Sunday. Finally went to the doctor yesterday, rotator cuff.... Doc said he can play(he missed another game on Wednesday) tonight....though we will see how it goes. Has not been a banner High School Summer League, more losses than I expected and the LM has been banged up with his hand and shoulder.
On the positive side, looks like the HS team is going to poach a goalie from another HS team. He is a friend of Jackson's and says he is going to transfer. He went to Jr. High locally, but moved HS's....not sure if that was related to moving in with another parent or what? He's played the past 2 Summer League games with us(1-1).
Think Jr. Grizzlies will start training camp late August.

He made the team, but had a bad tryouts. That combined with the fact that the beat second year kids from the other two teams all defected to this team means he got the last spot on the roster. It's still the best team and the coach is amazing. In talking to coach he will play atleast 1/2 the games likely 3/4s.
The coach and I had a long talk. His skill level is on par with the second year kids, but his compete level disappears at times. Coach said this year will be about turning him into a leader and teaching him he.can't take any shifts off. He explained the fact that he's still 6 is a large part of his issue. The last tryout was a full ice game. Final score his team 16 other team 6. Second and third period they scored 10 goals. He had 2 or 3 goals, 3 assists and had probably 4 unconverted breakaways. First period and early second period he was a ghost and barely skated and you could see the coach was pissed. He hates when kids don't compete.
As to the inline team. Buddys dad talked to coach last night. He already has micah and his friend penciled in as forwards on one of the lines

So basically he made it, but the team is primarily 2nd years that are already 8 and a couple of first years that have been 7 for a while and have the great hockey birthdays. I am glad he will get to practice with this coach and the coach has a specific plan for him. I was frustrated at first, but stepped back and realized. He is a very young first year mite who made the best team in the area and will get a lot of great coaching.
This team is going to destroy every local team by a lot.
Tired? Hurting? I am sure a little of both.... First time I have ever seen him take shifts off(miss a rotation) by choice.... Arm was hanging....but he played well.

Good picture.
Last night I had my first true wtf experience with travel mite hockey and really grasped why USA hockey says its a bad idea. Get a team email. The email is taking a head count of who would be interested in going to play in the All American Hockey Tournament in Phoenix AZ the first week of September. There are only 4 Guaranted games. Tourney fee is $1300 split over 15 kids plus its over 3 days so you would have 3 nights hotel and of course airfare as Phoenix is roughly 715 miles away.
You want to take these kids ranging in age from 6 -8 go 715 miles away to play in a tourney? I emailed right back and said couldnt make it. There are some people who want to go. When everything is said and done most familys would likely drop $1000. I could give my boy private skate lessons for a long time with that same money. I know travel is important, but get a grip.
Wow....that's nuts for 6-7 year old kids....
FINALLY! It has taken ? number of games to actually play great hockey this Summer.... Spacing, passing, movement, D.... The boys put it together tonight and put a beating on their opponent. The Little Man is still banged up, but having fun. Just an assist tonight, but I posted a photo sequence of his best offensive chance as well....
Love the smile, having fun!

Lastly the boy and his sister are now taking judo on Mondays.

I bet the balance and weight shifting/momentum stuff from judo would be very good cross training for almost every contact/semi-contact sport.... (total assumption, I have never even seen judo in person).
We had a whole week off! In fact, the Little One will have a little more time as she is between seasons and her private power skating lessons are on hiatus for a couple weeks due to them remaking the ice at our home ice center.
Jackson is going to be a shooter at the Jr. Grizzlies Goalie camp tonight and then he starts camp tomorrow. Timing is pretty good, being that the Summer HS season is over....

Haven't even started the season and my kid broke his RS Stealth :(
Luckily they are still available online but I was hoping for a bigger price cut since it's over 2 years old now, still $190.00 yuk.
A guy at the pro shop at my kids rink today said that these high end sticks only have a projected life of around 20 shots at the NHL level. He also said that Ovechkin uses an intermediate stick cause he likes the lower flex. I've never heard the life span story before, or that some pros like the intermediate sticks. Anyone else heard that?
I am always surprised how fragile all the new sticks appear to be…..prices keep going up, sticks “appear” to break easier…. We went through a rough patch in the Spring/Early Summer, but have been good for a little bit. Hasn’t broke a stick since a Warrior Widow in mid July…. Now that I think about it, that’s just a month ago….:td Well, I have not purchased a stick for a bit of time….that Widow was a present from his grandparents. Last one I purchased was a Sherwood N12 and he received a replacement on a Sherwood N12 on warranty & has had those two sticks for a bit.
Scott, if you are an IWin member at Icewarehouse, you can get the RS for $180 shipped... Free 2 day shipping, though think they only have the Hall curve in R.... I'm telling you, if you purchase online....you really need to get yourself an IWin membership... As for Flex. It's documented Brett Hull used a 62-65 flex. Ovi and kesel also use very whippy sticks. Depends on style of play

The D was uhhhhh $hitty . Mite travel u need strong D. We have 2 good D, the rest seem to do more harm then good.
Second game they got the anahiem wildcats and smacked then around, but that team blows. He only got 1 goal in game 2, but barely got any ice. That goal was a top corner rip and a beauty. He's 3rd on team in goals with 3 but has.considerably less ice time then #1&2. Tomorrow they play Jr. Coyotes at 8am and will get spanked. They should play in consolation game at 4pm tomorrow and be done. If he can scratch out one more goal I will be on cloud 9. As it is I am very very happy and proud of him. He has really shown that he has great hands this weekend.
He shot a lot of pucks in the garage this week. He is learning to lean into his wrist shot and it shows. Before game he said " dad I'm going to sniper top corner this game. " he did.

They went 2-2 in LA. He had a ton of shots on goal in game 4, but no puck luck. That said he's a puck hog and a dangler. The coach didn't have much positive to say about him from the weekend even though he produced a lot. The coach has said until he starts passing he won't be going to SoCal for tourneys. He's a real young first year October birth. Team is almost all second years. While he admits he's got skill he lacks team play.
Going to be a long year so hopefully he gets it by February

Ouch. So my kids team lost 6 players from last year, including the head coach. He took a job in Michigan, and took his son with him :)
We upgraded 1 goalie that we lost (actually 1 goalie was cut, he struggled a lot last year) and we added a decent Defenseman (another kid who was on the team a couple years ago, he came back) but we added 1 more D and 3 more Forwards who have never played AAA hockey.
The coach, who was the long time assistant coach since the teams inception, warned us all that the new kids would be 'works in progress', so we all knew it could be a rough year. Our first games this past weekend were a slaughter-fest. It was ugly. The worst losses we've ever taken as a team.
My kid, along with the core group of kids who've been on the team for years all looked OK, but I'm worried that their confidence is going to get shot to hell if things continue like this.
We're heading up to Detroit for a couple games on Saturday, against 2 very good Tier 2 teams so we'll see how those go. I know these 2 teams aren't quite as strong as the team that shellacked us last weekend (Pittsburgh 98 Selects, coached by Alain Lemieux) but I'm still pretty worried!
My kid has gotten physically stronger and bigger since last season and we've been doing strength training since the spring. There is a personal trainer at our gym who has worked with him once or twice while he was between clients and Cam likes the guy, and so do I, he really knows what he's doing, especially with teenagers. I'm thinking of paying him to work with Cam regularly, but the wife always seems to complain when I talk about paying trainers :)
I'll post again after this weekend, keep your fingers crossed for my kid and his team!
Sorry to hear, Scott. Hoping for better results this weekend, consider my fingers crossed!
My son, Jackson, never did get called up to the AA/AAA team like he had hope. For me it was bittersweet, as he'd go from a big fish to a small fish, so to speak, not to mention the far higher costs. The coach did ask him to come to every practice that doesn't conflict with the A/AA or HS team, so I look at that as free ice and hopefully he'll be able to travel to Chicago or the other Eastern tourney they plan on playing....later in the year. The extra practice with this coach is worth its weight in gold. His team with this program is going to Vegas as an A....it will be his first time playing out of State or any stay & play travel for that matter. We're both pretty excited to see how it goes.
So last night, I ask the little one about how her private power skating lessons went and what they worked on. She tells me they were working on backwards crossover strides & I respond... "You're going to be a better skater than your dad before you know it." Her mom rolled her eyes and said "She already is." I don't mind saying my pride was a little shaken, even though I know I'm no skater.....:r

1 win and 1 loss this weekend. The team looked better but I think it's going to be a long year :)
My kid has become fascinated with Paul Bisonnette, he loves his Youtube channel and of course at Perani's in Detroit they had some of his apparel. One t-shirt had a bunch of campbells soup cans 'ala Andy Warhol that said "Biznasty...Panty Soup" on them. The wife wouldn't let him had that one, but there was another that said something like "One knee slapshot -- Biznasty" so we got him that one instead :)
Here is the shirt, I was close:

Little man just got called by the coach of the Atom Inline Jr. Sharks team.
He was offered and accepted a spot on the team for this year.
He's been getting screwed around by his ice coach a lot. To the point he wants to go to a different team.
Like that shirt. Kid wants a shirt that says he dangled.

Have two kids get them, one the solid black, one the solid white and then go kill it Zebra......;)
One too many times in Players Bench the last few weeks and the Little One broke my spirit and took home her "Landeskog."

Can't imagine. I'm dreading when I have 2. The 14 month old has already developed a fascination with a little hockey stick and hitting a puck.
EJ buy her a Miken accuflex already. She will love it. Gotten some local parents to buy it now. Nice curve, good flex. Micah likes that RBZ. He wants me to paint his Miken white. Lol

Agree,...I can't imagine paying for 2 kids in travel.... Hell, the costs to just have 2 kids playing hockey(HS & travel and House) is taxing.
I forgot about your recommendation for the Miken....that's next!
First High School game for the year is in the books.... The Little Man got what his mother referes to as a "Barlocker Hat Trick" ..... One goal, one assist and one trip to the box..... Nice win for the boys....
I am still not super confident as to where we are going to end up, as I question our goaltending. He is going to get a lot of ice time though.....he's our only one. Playing 3 games a week right now.... I assume they are going to have to just put some skaters in net for JV games, give him some rest.
I was out of town on business and was not able to be there to take pics, but grandma sent me this....

Is she transitioning to full ice this year?
Is she transitioning to full ice this year?
Nope, 2 more years of cross ice. All House Mites go cross ice year round here and there is no travel mite teams.
Talking with her head coach, he also coached her last year. We found out our goalie was out for our first game, a week from today. He said "We now need to find a kid who wants to play goalie." I told him that Abby would do it, if needed, that she has done it before.... He said, "No.....she's not playing goalie." and started laughing.
His son then said something about him and Abby playing travel together & the coach then ask if we were considering the pseudo travel next year(Lightning Program), he'd be coaching. I said that Abby would have to play up to do it(the guy that does our local rink doesn't like kids playing up)...Coach apparently didn't remember that Abby is still 7 and an '05..... He said not to worry, she is too good to be playing Mites next year and that he'd fight that battle for me.....:tu
This is going to be a fun year.... Though being on the ice, I may not be able to tell the story with pictures.... Mom isn't great with the camera....

They are both older now and only play adult hockey. It was a lot of fun while it lasted but I admit I'm kinda glad it's over. It was a lot of work.
Good stuff, Eric! Especially love that you and your sons, coached your daughters team... What a great experience that must have been....added bonus, State Champions!!!!
Mike, do they actually go gloves with the unis as well? Thought maybe because it was all Mission, maybe they got and deal and that made it a sweet deal?

gloves are optional. May go white. Its roller after all and we all know roller players don't use mirrors. They got a great deal on uni and pants. Also we have a deal on optional equipment. Bauer reakt hemet 140ish with cage. Lot of deals like that.
great pics guys. Someone gave me a couple photos from LA tourney one is a goal he got. He's not on that team anymore. He disliked(PC) the coach and asked to quit. They released him. Signed with a worse team, but coach is super nice kids are all nice and he will likely be 1st line. At his age he just couldn't stand the screaming.
First scrimmage with the Jr. Grizzlies today....good thing, as they are off to Vegas next week. Not sure why the LM is not wearing the socks??? Half the kids weren't, maybe they don't have them yet....which is possible, they got their jerseys today.

Lost game 2 in the last 10 seconds, 7-6.... Lost game 3 in the final minute, 2-1 and then looked worthless in their final game....losing by a score I cannot remember.
We went down thinking they'd compete for a title and walked away humble and wondering who they are..... I have no doubt they will right the ship....

Been nice seeing him backcheck like a maniac and hustle his as$ off. He wants to play inhouse and we are going to let him so he can have some screw around time.

I'm feeling your pain. My kid's team is pretty bad this year as well. They were short benched from the beginning and the team's captain got injured in St Louis a couple weeks ago so the coach made the decision to pull out of the Warrior tournament in Detroit this weekend.
It's bad enough that the team isn't very good but now they're being denied games. The organizers of a tournament in Pittsburgh for next month has pulled them off the schedule. There was no reason given but it seemed obvious that they wanted better teams.
Sucks.

That does suck. Obviously since mines a first year mite its not a big deal to me. I actually told his coach they shouldn't go down to socal this year. They normally go down 2x a season. Having been down there with the other team which was considerably better it would be suicide. The coach is a great kid and knows what's up. They would get their heads kicked in. So glad I left other team. Getting reports of tons of drama. Nice and.happy where we are now. Atleast one other kid wants to defect.

We are hoping the coach can turn things around for next year, we love the core group of boys and their families, but there is no way I can allow my kid to go U16 with the team as it is. Most of the other boys are already freshmen and can play high school if they want, but we don't have that option where we live.
There is zero high school hockey here. There are a couple other U16 teams (next year my kid could play U15 as well) but they are no closer than we drive now. Columbus is our best option, and then there is Team Ohio, based out of Cleveland, or Indy...both of those last two are over 2 hours drive each way, that aint good.
I found out after the season started that Columbus had approached our coach with the option to merge, since they were short handed as well, but he felt that we had a good lookout for the season, and then that backfired on him. Just hoping they get some concrete answers before tryout time next year. I absolutely hate the idea that we're in a throw-away season, it's such a waste.
Tough stuff, Scott... Hopefully they can get their wheels rolling a bit and it isn't a throwaway season.
If I was a betting man, would guess our HS team will take their first loss of the season tomorrow. Play the defending State Champions, who I think we match up with very favorably....besides between the pipes, which I think will be the decider....as it is not even close.

I may have been a little too positive with my thinking we match up with them, besides in net. We were missing 2 of our better players, but they beat us 4-1 and took our best 2 offensive players totally out of the game, which is not an easy task. They are very good and deep.
With a full team, we'll have to play a total game to beat them....

Ouuuuch!
Been so lucky with his Miken. Not looking forward to that phase you and EJ are in.
Kid had roller at 7am in San Jose, then drove to Oakland for games with travel 10am-330pm. Then his buddy took him back to San Jose for an inhouse game 515-615. I snuck over while at work and watched the game. He played D for first time ever. Ended up +3 as a D man and played really well. He seemed bored as hell at times as a D. His coach kept having to remind him not to pinch. Had two awesome bobby orr rushes up ice skating through everyone only to have the forwards go off sides and fuc& it up. Back at the rink tomorrow at 7am for pracy. Im working so buddys dad is taking him.
Shot of the day was in Oakland. Comes in on a breakaway shoots the puck drills goalie in mask goalie falls back into net and puck goes in.

Something about those pics just shows why hockey is such a team game.
Thanks, Mike.
Little One crushed today. The ref kept coming up to me, talking about her. Very complementary of her....which is always nice to hear as a parent. He didn't flip sides of the ice @ the half. The other ref was female, apparently has played some higher level hockey and he wanted her to have a look.
Sucks, being on the ice....no pics of the Little One....
Played this team twice in the past 3-4 weeks...losing both time by one goal. LM was a +3. Bunch of chippy phuckers that have just a touch less class than their coaches and fans.... I cannot remember having a more sour taste in my mouth related to kid/coach/fan behavior.
The Little Man said that during handshakes, one of the refs said to the coach that his team was the worst behaved team he'd ever ref'd and that he was a expletive expletive. Interesting night.
All that said, I really think they are showing marked improvement....so I guess that is positive.

May hit that. Checked TH facebook page and they said big sale this weekend. Got a few things to grab so will see what shakes out.
First roller tournament this weekend. Its supposed to be a slaughter but thats why they play.
Well, I just ordered a Bauer 9900 and I think it MAP'ed it? Guess we will see if I just get my standard 15% or if it will actually do the 20%.....but I'm thinking not..... No big deal, $7 difference....but.....
We went to put the white 580 cage on the Little Man's 9900 and the screws on the top were seized. Was able to finally get one, but the other broke off inside/snapped. Pulling it out, it tore some of the foam as well, coming out.... Not a huge deal, but whatever.... He had practice, so we put the 580 cage on my helmet and off he went.... He is 50/50 if he wants to just keep my 7K.... I ordered a new 9900 and he can take it or I'll throw my shield on it and we'll call it good....
He's playing in Wyoming, Idaho and Arizona in December......
Tis the season for travel hockey....
Happy Thanksgiving All!
Icewarehouse is now following MAP rules, iWin membership is worthless..... Though they ship fast, pricing is meh now..... Didn't make this clear, so my last order, I made with the impression that I would get a discount and didn't.....feel like I was misled.

So they played there fist roller tournament today. Holy crap.
First game they won 17-0 second game 23-0. Not sure the third game score as they dont post goals at this age once it gets to 8-0. I had to leave before they posted the score on the bracket sheet. Likely 20-0. This was not done on breakaway goals either. The boys were only allowed to shoot if the puck was passed to them while they were set up in the attack zone. They were passing back to the point constantly and the coaches were making them skate back to their net and start a breakout from there. There was a discussion that they should play up a division as it was embarrassing. In the 4th game the gave up one goal. Micah was not out there when it happened. I heard it was a somebody trying to hotdog. Final goal differential somewhere around 70-1
With all that my kid almost got benched after the first 2 games. Basically a couple of times he would go in on a breakaway and score. Even after the coaches told him not to. The head coach advised me to have a talk with him and get him to play the system or he would sit. As the coach put it everyone on the team can score almost at will thats not what they are trying to teach. Thankfully game 3 and 4 he totally bought in and played amazing both ways. The coaches were very happy with him and let him know. He has been a little defiant lately and its driving me crazy.

E.J notice the number on the front side of helmet. One of the latest cool kid trends. Much like white cages its the in thing right now atleast with younger kids.
LM is going to miss his first HS game ever.....can't get someone to trade him and has to work..... Assuming they don't have anyone else missing, they should win, but sucks all the same.
Still crossing my fingers for some magic to happen today and he gets it off. Personal responsibility to work vs personal responsibility to your team..... That's a tough one...but I think he needs to show up to work when scheduled if he cannot make other arrangements. Plus, it isn't a HUGE GAME..... Like I said, they should win and the playoffs are not in doubt, assuming they don't chit the bed.
The HS played the Midget Major AA Regulators(the team the LM would have been on if he would have made the choice to play for them) in a practice game tonight. Won in a shootout.
Nothing great out of the camera....but it's fun all the same.

The last pair of youth skates for my oldest boy. Will have to move to jrs next not looking forward to the price jump. Had the holders from the reebok boots used for his roller hockey skates put on these and had them wedged again. I dont understand why Graf runs smaller runners on their skates then reebok and bauer

He likes to wear the Grey gloves with the white Jersey. Diva.
Great shot of the goal....

Ahhh the good old days.
We're now into the days of Adult skates and Senior sticks. All I can do now is look back fondly to when we could get a pair of skates for less than $100 and a stick for $30!
Now it's more like $500 and $200 respectively...and one stick isn't enough :(
Getting our asses handed to us in Rock Springs. Playing a U18 team and have lost twice, 5-4 & 8-5, down 3-0 & 4-0 to start the games. Unfortunately, seems to be a theam with this team lately, get down 2-3+ goals before the lights turn on?
LM is a plus for both games, but that doesn't make me feel any better about the losses stacking up...
The size/strength of the U18 kids seems to be a tough task to overcome as a whole with our guys.... They're battling, we'll see if they can take game 3...
Kicking it in the room, prior to the first game. Strange to travel to a tournament without Michelle or the Little One... Alone watching television, having a beer and some micro-popcorn.

Great pics of the girl. She seems to get the puck a lot lol. Definitely getting big. Nice to see her taking advantage of the boys.
Kid played a three games this past Sunday. One of the games was against the B squad from the club he left earlier this year. The coach who yelled all the time and didnt think M ever did anything good. He beat the B team pretty much on his own, thankfully that coach doesnt coach the B team. Final score 5-3. He had 3 goals and an assist. He even ran a kid or two over :r. Yesterday they said they were going to try to play their A squad this weekend. I told our team manager it was too soon for him and we would skip that game. Apparently M is viewed as the heart of the team as the manager said he understood and would just cancel if M wasnt going to play. I told him just do the game, but apparently he doesnt want to.
Third game we swore some of the kids were squirts. Never seen 8 year olds that big. We have 2 bigb8 year olds. They were smaller then half the team. It wasnt a league game so we think they just grabbed who ever could make the 2 hour drive. Team is from a ghetto area to put it nicely. The kids were pretty aggressive. Lot of slashing and tripping. Was funny to watch. M got tripped so he got up and started chopping wood on this kid. Watching a 7 year old chirp the $ hit out of another kid while skating down the ice is hilarious. His coach was laughing as well. A few shifts later his teamate got hacked so M skates over and shoulder checks the the kid who did it into the boards. Then not missing a beat boards another kid right next to that kid. The other teams parents started screaming. They werent really calling penalties obviously. His coach looks over at me and says man "M is so feisty". His nickname is apparently "lil $hit"
One of her coaches from last year, is coaching the team we played above. He came over to me after with a big smile, said his kids were complaining that Ab's was too physical....:r He really has a soft spot for her, as all her coaches have I guess....something about having a girl out there crushing against the boys. Not bad for a 7 year old girl, eh....:tu
I think it is unfortunate that M is not going to play against that other team, I'd like to see him smoke 'um..... Guess that will happen in time & I'll enjoy hearing about it. I still have a sour taste in my mouth about that coach, couldn't imagine how I'd feel if I was dealing with it first hand....
We're heading to Idaho this weekend, I'm hoping that we have a very successful trip and come back with a lot of confidence heading into Phoenix for a Holiday tourney.

My kid got a Christmas card in the mail from Kent Hockey Schools the other day. They do this every year, they send a picture of the coaches and a picture of your kid that they took at camp the previous summer. This was my kids pic. He said he went first (alphabetically) and after him, all the other boys started asking for the female counselors to joing in as well!

Hockey players or just students helping with the camp?
All the girls left after the initial check-in were skaters and somehow involved with the camp. There were a ton of students helping with the check in, but most left right after that. Same thing with the Selects Hockey camp in Buffalo, they use UofB students to help campers get to their rooms, check in, etc etc.
Cam pointed out a girl at check-in that looked exactly like Mila Kunis. The resemblance was uncanny. She had gone home before this pic was taken, or he would have had her in it :)
The Mila-lookalike wasn't a skater, but both of these girls were, and were there the whole week.
Haven't gone through the pics tonight.... Crushed a team from up North.... It was a nice win and the boys played well and did just what they should have against this team. Could have scored 17-20....
Liked this off the bat... Just saying thanks to the other kids....

So this post has 2 parts.....
First.... The Little Man went away from Eagle gloves.... Don't know why this is disappointing to me, but it is all the same. He has had a pair on since he was 7 and now TPS.... Like always, I tell him, fit and function is key....and tossed him what was sure to be his next gloves(Eagle PPF's). Told him to try on a few pair of gloves while I chased his sister around, who was trying on every piece of equipment in the place. Anyway, came back and he had his gloves picked out... I am sure I must have given a look, because I got the response "They are what fit best, I LIKE THESE." Dad was just overruled for the first time in an equipment purchase..... (I still think the Eagle's felt better)
Second..... Just paid for this years USAHockey fee this morning. Purchased a new helmet(just because), shield(his old fishbowl was hammered), gloves and shin guards this afternoon...... Saturday I will pay this years rec hockey fees(his last year) and expect to hear shortly what this season of high school hockey(his first regular season, has been playing this Summer with the JV team) will be costing me.... It is a good damn thing I love this sport and being at the rink, because it is not exactly easy on my wallet.
Guess there could be worse things, right....I could be paying for travel leagues...:r (He also is going to make it into the new season in last years skates, so that is a nice treat)
In the end, I could not be happier to be working my way through this and cross my fingers that his sister catches the bug as well....
P.S. I'll get a box of cigars worth of cash out of his old stuff at the skate swap....:tu
P.S.S. 2 more years and I don't have to taxi him to practices, drop in and stick & puck.
Thanks for sharing your experience you have nice son to keep you busy.
Thanks!
Reading that brings back funny memories.... How things have changed in 2 years. The Little Man does now drive himself to practices, games and dryland.... It is quite a change, in a good way. Though now I am paying travel fees, though at a lower level. What is a few extra K on top of the rest....:r
Now helping coach the Little One....which takes up that time that I save not having to drive the older one around.
Still love doing this....:tu

Well, the boy is in Phoenix and I'm not there.....or going. First tourney I'll miss.... They are VERY, VERY shorthanded. Have caught the injury bug and have at least 2 kids that had other Holiday obligations.... I think they will have 9 skaters, not kidding......
Going to be ugly.....but I just encouraged the LM to have fun and play hard, whatever happens....just give your best.
.....and what do you know.....Jr. Grizz beat the Jr. Kings in game 1. LM gets the game winner!
AMAZING crowd last night at the game. We played a team that I wouldn’t really call a rival or even someone we consider an afterthought. They are having what has to be their best hockey season ever and feel like a State title is within reach. They are one of the two biggest schools in the State, about double the population of our student body and historically are VERY good at the major sports.
Anyway, they brought the house, arena was PACKED. Lots of noise, atmosphere that I have never seen at a regular season game. That intensified after they scored the first goal of the game, about 3-4 minutes into the first.
It went downhill from there for the opposing team. We CRUSHED them(9-3), but it was still nuts. I love that type of atmosphere for the kids & I know they revel in it.
No pics at work, will throw some up later....
The Little One had the opportunity to go practice with the U14 Lady Lightning and their U14 Developmental Team the other night. It was apparent that she was clearly out skilled/sized/strength by most of the girls(she'll be 8 this month), she really held her own with some of the others.
They split the girls up by ability after a bit and went to an ADM practice, where she did just fine. On the flip side, I don’t know what girls were there that were actually guests and what girls were on the developmental team(it was obvious who were actually on the Lady Lightning team). Wish I knew.
She had such a great time, it being the first time she has just practiced with girls. I ask her what her favorite part was, her response "The whole thing." It was also nice that there was a girl on the LL team that she had met before, her brother plays with the Little One's brother on the Jr. Grizzlies.
Took a couple pictures, as I tend to do. VERY strange to have her be the small kid…..

Love the pics of Abbs. Thats so awesome. I have some of micah when he was 5 with first year squirts. Crazy size difference.
The flu is ripping through our house and the boy is falling. The West Coast NARCH Winter Nationals are this weekend. Teams from Hawaii and So Cal are coming. At this point I hope he will be able to play in a game by Sunday or Monday. He is already getting sad he may miss this. Horrible timing. As for the penalties, dont know what to say.
My kid has been glossed the little $hit and last weekend was told to go after a kid who kept jabbing at the goalie after he froze the puck. He apparently got his pound of flesh from the kid and it stopped. . I was told none of the second years were able to handle the job so the first year took care of it. The coaches were talking about how he hip checked a kid on the boards perfectly. He took a penalty but I guess the were so proud no one cared.
How's the West Coast NARCH Winter Nationals going, Mike? PICS?!?!?!
Here are a few from this weeks tourney.... After a diappointing start, we beat the Capital Thunder(Sacramento) to get to the Championship. LM had a goal and an assist in the Semi Final game..... Here are a few pics from said game...

UNBELIEVEABLE!!! Just got this in the mail(see below)........WTF!!! Just beat a team in the semi final and they are advancing.... How do you come through pool play, play a 2 vs 3, assuming you'll play the 1 vs 4. Win and then play the loser of the 1 vs 4....(the 4).... Wish I could ***** about a phucking trainwreck of a tournament, but it's ours.... UNBELIEVEABLE.....PHUCK.:r:(:fl:pu
Here's the deal. The way the rules read, it states the two teams with the most points advance. And the schedule doesn't say Semi Finals. Bummer deal but we did what we had to do and beat them. They can cry all the way home after Ogden puts a beat down on them. All we can do is go out like we played today and kick the crap out of Greenwood. All in all be proud of how we played today and bring it tomorrow!!

Had a somewhat similar weekend.
The boys went 4-1 on the weekend. They took third in runner up game. They lost to the tournament winner 8-6. Dont want to blame the goalie but he got yanked because he couldnt make a save and let in the first 5 shots he faced. Soft soft goals.
Sucks because the one lost saturday knocked them out because the champs and another team tied. If we had played the other team we would have won and got to the championship. Just didnt work out.

Awesome photos!!!
Right on, those were some good ones!
My kids teams' best player, and coaches son broke his kneecap last week, he's done for the year. He was also supposed to be immobile until his surgery so the coach had to stay home last weekend while the team played in Pittsburgh. So the assistant took over and asked me and another dad to work the bench with him.
It was the best time I've EVER had at one of my kids games. Talking to the boys during the game, giving advice, yelling at the refs and actually getting a response!
I'm not sure if I'll get to help again, that situation was pretty unique, but man I'll never forget it.

EXCELLENT! That sounded fun, just reading it....:tu
So the Little One's game was a little more physical than a parent or coach would like today.... I mentioned to the ref a few times that he needed to get control of the game and start using his whistle a bit, with absolutely zero results.... I mentioned to our kids, play a clean game. Play the puck not the body ect....
Anyway, close to the end, she got knocked off the puck in what looked to be an almost unintentional check from a kid that just had a hard time stopping himself as he ran into her. He actually got the worst of it by far..... But it set her off..... She got up, skated in a small circle, lined a kid up who now had the puck and was bringing it through the neutral zone. She put on the burners, from about 30' away with a great angle & CRUSHED the kid. Just annihilated him. It was as good of open ice check as I have seen in a bit.....but totally illegal in the fact that it is Mites(no checking) and totally uncalled for.
I screamed out her name and then told the ref, BLOW THE WHISTLE....CALL THAT! Which he didn't.... I could hear parents in the stands yelling....it was crazy.... I pulled her and skated out and talked with the ref AGAIN, saying that he had let the game get out of control and someone was going to get hurt. He looked me right in the eye and said "I know." WTF??? I made it clear that we were as much at fault as the other team, but that he needs to blow his whistle.....UGH! I really don't know what else I could have done....the whole game....
I felt bad, the Little One started crying and told me that it wasn't fair, she was getting checked and then gets in trouble....bla..bla...bla... Stuff like that is tough for a coach....
All that said.....and now that the game is done and nobody was hurt.... WOW, WHAT A HIT.....
Oh....and conservative estimate, she had 8-10 goals...

Nothing wrong with some body contact. Its hockey after all. Cant say much my kids the toll collector on the boards for his team. Everyone pays. He loves rubbing kids out and is already a student of the hip check. Hes familiar with the sin bin. Usually the refs warn him a few times then he gets the hook.
My gripe is that the powers on high have now deemed no full ice for mites. Thankfully his inhouse program still does 1/2 full ice games and 1/2 Xice. Next year though I will have to move him up a year early so he will play full ice in inhouse. Nor Cal Hockey which oversees doesnt really sanction mite travel teams has now decide that mite club kids cant play any full ice games. So they arent acknowledging our existence really, but wont let us play full ice games unless its a tournament. We are left playing 1/2 or 3/4 games with no offsides or icing and the kids are confused.
Look I understand xice is supposed to give more kids touches, but if you ever watch you will see the good kids still end up with the puck all the time. Kids that arent good just end up as cones to skate arond. The worse thing is now you will have kids who are squirts who have played up to 4 years of xice now being thrown on a full sheet of ice and introduced to offsides, icing, in game line changes etc. NC hockey has also basically banned kids playing up in travel so he will have to play inhouse squirts next year and travel mite. Then the travel teams are likely going to have to sneak around to do full ice games occasionally.

Nice shots!
Are 1 & 2 a sequence, looks like he crossed that tall kid(girl?) and she/he lost an edge and went sliding away harmlessly…..
The boy starts HS playoffs tomorrow night. First game is single elimination, the winners go to a double elimination bracket…. For some reason I’m anxious as hell…. The team they are playing, they crushed early in the season, but seem to be on a bit of a run as of late. Hate to catch a hot team this time of year.
Then, we are traveling to a tournament in Idaho this weekend, outdoor rink…. Should be interesting. Supposed to be a fun time for the kids.

They got stomped by his team from last year. He scored the only goal skating through the team looked like he did a pull through in the process

Turns out it was a torn ligament. They thought at first there was a bone chip or spur by the knee cap, but further xrays showed it was the ligament. He had surgery last week and it went well, but he is off the ice for quite a while
He took a hit mid-ice and just twisted with the upper body hit, his legs stayed right where they were, I think that's where the tear occured. He went down on his knee right after that, and favored it while trying to get back up, that's why everyone thought it was the knee..

Then, we are traveling to a tournament in Idaho this weekend, outdoor rink…. Should be interesting. Supposed to be a fun time for the kids.
That sounds sick. We are going to lake tahoe this weekend to play a team for a couple of games and do a little team building. I am bringing my skates and hoping for an outdoor rink. I would love to skate with the boy outside.

Thats horrible. PCL? I messed mine up playing one time. Buddy took me out on accident. Thankfully didnt need surgery.
Easy win..... Well, 7-4, but it wasn't that close. The boy didn't have his best game and was pretty frustrated after.
8 Teams left and I think there are 2 frontrunners(not us) and 3 other teams with an outside shot(we're in there)......
We're going to have to have FAR BETTER play between the pipes, than we had last night, to get to the Final 4. We play the team that I posted about on Jan. 10th. Beat them 9-3 a month ago(they are better than that) and I am worried as could be... Couldn't stop a beach ball last night....
Had a great time in Salmon, Idaho this past weekend.
These guys were hanging out at the rink.....

Speaking of the rink.....

They had a skills competition at noon yesterday for the 5 teams. The LM entered the hardest shot and sniper competitions. He was competitive in the hardest shot, though didn't win(73MPH)....another kid on our team did win it with 76MPH.

He did win the sniper competition. Hit 4 or 5 in the prelim(missed center) and then 4-5 in the final to win it(missed top right). He was pretty stoked.... He had some teammates there for support.

Hanging out with some of the other kids during the skills thing. He also was a shooter in the goalie competition. Which he may have thought was the most fun of it all....

Bad ass photos. Would love for M to experience something like that.
Good guys win! We were the lower seed, 4 vs 5 game, and move on with a 7-4 win. Play the #1 next week....

Nice. Congrats
Lol just noticed all the iced out cages on the travel kids.
Into the meat grinder tonight.... Playing the undefeated #1 seed. They have outscored their opponents this year, 130 to 13....:r
If we can get good play between the pipes and the lower end 2nd-3rd line players step up, we'll be right there. But that is asking a lot....
All that said, there is a reason they actually play the games, no game was won or lost on paper..... GO SPARTANS!!!!
After taking a 2-1 lead, now down 3-4 after two.... 15 minutes to go!!!

Oldest girl idolizes big brother. Now they do judo and hockey together. They have a free roller class right after his travel team practice. She wants to do ice, but I told her just like brother she has to do roller first for a while.
Cool thing was didnt have to spend a penny on new gear as we just reused brothers.
Nice, Mike! Looking good....

Spring summer time hockey.
No one close outside of the a $$hole coach he refuses to play for has a mite summer team. We now have to try to get him a redshirt on either the summerhawks (blackhawks summer team) squirt team or the Seals (jr sharks summer team) squirt team. Talked to Curtis Brown who runs the seals. Said he may let him redshirt after roster established. No idea on summerhawks.
Not sure if he will play competitive roller next year. Something has to give between travel ice, inhouse ice, travel roller and judo. He likes roller because the coaches and kids, but doesn't like playing roller that much. He wants to do baseball now that Hawks is ending. Uuuuuuugh
Yep, things winding down here and starting to look at what we are going to do this Summer. Sure it will end up a lot like last year.... High School Summer League for the LM, 3-3 for the Little One, which generally is locked up in soccer, which is going to ramp up(not that she isn't already playing on 2 indoor teams right now)....
Did he play baseball last year, cannot remember?
Had the last practice of the season for the Lady Lightning, last night. Last practice for the house league tomorrow night(parents vs kids game).....then final game on Saturday. The older one is done with Jr. Grizzlies and HS.... WOW....I said winding down above, but for some reason thought we had a little more time.... Nope, season is done at this house Saturday around 3:00......
^^^(mistake post, meant for NHL thread)
Played a player vs. parent game against my Mights tonight.... Thighs burning, sweat covered back....really? That said, so fun! Great kids, great parents, great season!

Nice. We didnt do that this year.
My thighs are burning though. The little man has picked up a weird habit of not getting low anymore and his stride has shortened and he is losing speed. I think its a roller hockey thing. The roller hockey court is shorter and narrower so they dont need to have as much speed as they need to be quick. Short quick strides often work better. Spent time in the garage and driveway using roller blades funny enough going over stride mechanics. Work in progress, but I he did see that getting low allowed for fewer longer strides which generated more speed.
His coach also told me he needs to start shooting from further out to take advantage of his hard shot. He loves to dangle (toe drag junkie), deeke and get in close on the goalie. Coach was saying while its easy now its going to get harder to do in the coming years so.........
Lastly need to start introducing some light cardio with him. Abby plays soccer so you dont have the issue, but he gets gased at times. So yeah fun spring and summer for me.
He played his last travel game of season and of course wouldnt have been complete without a beautiful shoulder check that sent the other kid horizontal into the boards. It really was pretty. The other kif had a wtf just happened look on his face.
Little Man is at State Camp, went up and watched for an hour today. Some great players there, he's getting a workout... Interested to see what the evaluation says...

Wow... Was looking at who this kid is, who I thought was the best kid on the ice, turns out he is a local kid who'd be playing for our HS if he wasn't billeting in Colorado to play. Looks like he's trying to get on(goal, he's 15) the USA U17 National team(think it's U17??).
Long story short.... Kid is GOOD and he's a Murray kid and I'd never even heard of him because he left the State for better competition.

Yeah scary when you see how good some kids are. Was like when we went down to LA for ice or when our inline team played the LA inline team. In fairness to the boys our inline goalie is not much and had his worse game ever. We likely could have beat the LA team with a decent goalie. Just puts everything in perspective. This weekend we played another Nor Cal inline event and mercy ruled all 5 teams very quickly.
Atleast he got the exposure and saw what he needs to shoot for.
Travel and inhouse ice are now over. Only thing that remains is roller. Looks like we got hooked up and gor on a ice power skating clinic list. They are letting us do the mite one, but also got on the list for the travel squirt skate. Trying to weasel a red shirt on a squirt summer team, but not likely unless someone does us a favor. Fair amount of ice for the spring and summer, just trying to figure out best bang for buck.
Changed my mind and put the Little One in the Grizzly Spring Ice, instead of house 3-3, for her Summer ice time. It will be a big jump, as they don't do Mite, only Squirt and it will be full of travel kids....but will challenge her, which may be a good thing.... Guess we will see how she responds. Surprisingly, it is actually cheaper & more ice time.....go figure.
Oh, and the kid I mentioned above is a '96. I assumed he was 15, as he's in a grade lower than the Little Man, but when I looked at the selection stuff, he's a just a young(November) '96.

Well spring plans are set.
Little man tried out for hawks summer squirt team and made it. In fairness they had a big turnout and were able to form 2 teams. As a first year mite I dont think he had enough juice to make the 1st team but he did look really really good. Carried the puck multiple times in scrim, deeked some kids, had some nice shots on net. Got some compliments from coaches about him. Supposed to play a tourney in L.A. end of next month. Whats awesome is he also has a roller tourney down there that weekend. Could get 2 for 1
This week and next we are doing a power skating clinic. Never been a fan of private lessons, but after talking to a few people I think clinics are often a waste. So many kids on the ice tbat instructor's cant really tweek things
Congrats to Micah!
We got bad news yesterday.... HS coach and 2 assistants, all resigned. HC had been doing it for 10 years, more or less a volunteer position and I think with all the time and energy, he just decided it was time. One assistant was his brother, other was a kid he coached on the team years ago. LM was really bummed....broke down even talking about it....:(

Two of the best 05s in the area. Very competitive relationship between these 2. M is in yellow.
New used skates. Got them off ebay for half price. Reebok 18ks $330 brand new got for about 150
Wedges installed. Loves the fit. Says most comfortable skate ever

Nice win, on the skates...
Love his position on that pic! Balance/center of gravity is awesome!
Apparently the Little Man was awarded the best defenseman award(team) at the Jr. Grizzlies awards banquet(we had other plans). AWESOME!!! Not sure what that is(what they give him), but the coach is going to bring it by Sunday. (they just contacted him)
