View Full Version : Being a Hockey Parent
Getting off the ice at Stick and Puck. Mike told me I got a "fail" on focus...:r I don't know if it was too much coffee and 2 hours on the ice or what, but I couldn't get a clear pic out of 4... That said, I thought it was a fun pic all the same.

Old people have issues with modern technology. :r
Cool picture. Hope to one day have some similar ones.
Micah did the blackstars tryout yesterday. Its the furthest club from us, but he likes the coach and the club has a development option they will allow him to do this year where he can practice with the club, but not have to play or travel with them, which is what we want. They said he may be asked to play in some crossice stuff for them but we can decline. He will be playing inhouse with all his buddies also.
Tomorrow I have to go down to LA/ Anahiem area for a training till thursday. Dads going to be crackhead in a crackhouse. Hockeymonkey, hockeygiant, hockeytron, hockeydogs, and some other shops. Trying to figure out how to stop at icewarehouse in san luis obispo, but its halfway between sj and la and when were traveling and returning they will be closed. There are some other shops also, but want to hit the big ones.
I'd LOVE to run the gauntlet of those stores one day..... Just made a small purchase at the Monkey....closeout protective stuff with the SUMMER20, it was too good to pass up. Their handling/shipping charges suck balls, but at least this time they shipped same day, which turns into 2 day shipping for me.
Still have never been as impressed with an online hockey retailer, as I am with icewarehouse...those guys/girls kick tail! If you are able to work out getting there, I am interested to hear what you think.
Safe travels!
@ third rink in 3 nights.... Last Start Smart skate, 1st round of playoffs for the JVers in the mens league & now round 1 for the Varsity in the HS Summer League....
Well I wouldn't have guess that.....:( Varsity Summer Season is over that quick.... Couldn't get the lead all game long, Good Guys tie it up with about 1:30 to go.....gave up the game winning goal with :12.......ugh...
Little Man slapped this at the goal, rebound was blasted in by a teammate coming in from the left.... Tied the game up towards the end of the second.

Micah was offered a spot on the Stars mite cross ice tournament team.
The Stars are doing something unique this year. They have a full blown travel team which will play full ice tournaments and games around the state and also a mite cross ice jamboree tournament team which will only do cross ice stuff in the bayarea. 3-4 jamborees during the season. Both teams will practice together. This is exactly what we were hoping for. He will get to participate in high level practices without the travel stuff. He really likes the coach who is super friendly and positive.
He is also going to do inhouse with his buddies. He is going through withdrawals right now. Hes only been skating once a week and playing roller one day. He got used to skating a lot more and misses skating more.

Video of Micahs shootout goal from Golden State Hockey Camp allstar game. Goali was 7 or 8. He might be the goalie for his cross ice team. Sorry about the audio. Its from the game video. The shot actually took three tries to complete. The first time either the goalie came out before the whistle or there were kids on the ice still. Second attempt Micah left before the whistle so they blew it dead.

Luls Micah has two on the way. That is probably the best youth stick made. Kevlar wrapped really holds up to abuse. Hoping will last him the season. At $40 a pop thats a deal and a half. They are selling for 89.00 plus tax locally.
Grabbed a pair of those Youth Easton gloves also. Broke down to $12.80 for a pair. And grabbed a pair of the youth warrior bentley shinguards. $16.00. There selection isnt great, but given he he really needs a set of cheap gear for roller this sale was awesome. Pretty good quality stuff for very cheap.

That is a pet peeve of mine.... IMO, with today’s tech, anything ordered before noon, should ship that day. Maybe those are unrealistic expectations, but I have them and if a place cannot live up to them, they may not get my business.

I agree on Amazon being crazy fast. My wife orders things from them just for this reason.
Anyone have interaction with hockeyoutlet.com before? I REALLY need to find some white/orange/black RBK Edge socks and they look to have them.....so I'm pulling the trigger this morning unless someone would suggest otherwise.
Had the HS Regular Season Meeting/BBQ last night.... First on ice practice in 2 weeks, drylands start next week. The Little One has ratings on the 10th and 15th... Here we go again....:D
Well, ordered 2 pair of the white and 1 pair of the black(blacks are easy to find) and I recieved a USPS shipping number, so that is good news.....

Today was a bit of a culture shock for this hockey family. The Blackstars had the intro team party today. The party was at a parents house. The house was unreal. Based on zillow the house was worth about 5 million dollars. Multiple players parents lived in the same neighborhood. This kind of explained why the lady recommended we buy two home and away jerseys. I am planning on one each. Walking up to the house we felt odd. My wife and I are very low key people.
Then things got more interesting. The boys all went to a 1hr practice on the other side of the property while the parents talked or helped. The dryland practice was run by a coach from Slovakia who has coached nhlers including my favorite Pavelski. We were also informed he will run an on ice practice for the boys tomorrow. The guy is associated with this.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=57925131582
The boys were then told that in September they will play in the Sharks Arena before the teal and white Sharks team scrimage. The boys will use the visitor locker room, meet some of the players, and some of them may skate with the boys. It's capped at 20 for the two squads so Micah may or may not get picked for the on ice portion. He's played there twice though with the san Jose in-house minimite program. Today my wife and I just kept looking at each other like what did we get ourselves into. We just wanted Micah to get better coaching.

We are right there with you. Virtually every team my son has been on, we were on the low rung in regards to the socioeconomic ladder. We still are. A couple years ago he was on a team with a boy who had his own rink on their property. And I don't mean a backyard do-it-yourself rink. This thing is impressive, they have a zamboni too.
Not to mention their house, which looked like a ski resort. In Dayton Ohio! lol!

He had to take the dome off not sure what the end result was. There are people in the bayarea with insane money. At age 17 out here Tier travel can run over 15k per year.
Little man got his nickname from the coach. Coach nicknamed him Thor. Micah wanted Pikachu the Pokemon, but his coach said he just couldn't see himself yelling Pikachu during a game. :r

Nice, positive vibes for a great season.
If they take a team pic of his team I will post his up.
Last night our house league had Ratings & Conditioning for the mites. I was able to bring my son with me to help coach(cat heard) the kids through the drills. Mom was working, so I kept Abby on the ice for both sessions. I could see the smile through her cage, a mile wide, as she would skate by her brother or me, going through drills.
There are times in life that are as close to perfect as it gets, last night was one... Life is good being a hockey parent....
I go from the perfect night above to getting the shaft...... Go to all the coaches meetings, do my background check, USA hockey, ratings & conditioning ect.... I go to the draft tonight and they pull assistant coaches names out of a hat and I don't get pulled. I should be clear that there were coaches pulled that have been to none of the above....Hell, they were not there tonight....
Mind you, he told me he cut the list off when it was full, so the director obviously added names.... Pretty pissed off right now, but what am I going to do about it....
I have really been looking forward to coaching the Little One.... What a shitty night....

That's crap brother I am sorry that happened. Part of the reason I buddied up with his inhouse coach and our sons became friends was so I could help coach on the ice. That and I play the heavy so he can be the nice guy. I have been tempted to offer to assist coaching his travel club because at.times the practices are very disfunctional, but its our first year so I am just keeping my mouth shut largely. Just been giving Micah direction off the ice on who to avoid, but its tough some of these kids need a swift kick in the ass because the parents clearly have failed.
Thanks, Mike....
It is disappointing. In fact more than disappointing, I am sad about losing out on this and pissed feeling like I was mislead. I will see what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again….(latch onto a head coach to be a #1 assistant, which is assured a spot). The Little One is good enough, I assume it shouldn’t be a problem.
I went online shopping at Ice Warehouse to drown my sorrows. The Little Man needed new gloves(have promised him X60’s for 2 weeks) and the Little One needed a neck guard. I put in wrist guards(LM) and an Ai9(LO) as extra treats. Have NO IDEA what prompted the Ai9.....talk about impulse purchase....:r:r

Ai9 has been dumped.... It was going to hold up the entire order for 25ish days(pre-release order), so I dumped it, added a new jock/cup and it should ship today.

They can ruin a season :r. I have learned they come at all ages. This week in kindergarten was sharing things that start with the letter S. Micah brought his S19 Stick and talked about playing for two hockey teams this year and how he also plays roller. He has some fans already, but yesterday I had a two moms come up and discuss how their daughters talked all about Micah being a hockey player all night.
Playing for a team who's kids has money has a plus. Free lightly used Bauer Total One Yth.

That is win all day long.... I thought old sticks always became garage sticks...having someone give you a stick that fits(or is even close) is a huge bonus....:tu
Went to the Little One's first practice last night.... It is disappointing that I am not on the ice with her, but I will say that I am impressed with the coaches that are.
So give me some advice, being that the Little Man never had a girl on his team through all his years, until half of last year with the HS(her mom pulled her because of grades apparently). Is it unreasonable to ask the coach(s) to have the kids show up dressed enough(hockey jock shorts or the like) that she can be in the locker room full time?
She is the only girl on her team and even through Start Smart has always dressed in a locker room by herself and went on the ice to meet everyone. Same with yesterday, she is dressing by herself, can hear all the banter next door, finishes about the same time and everyone heads to the ice. To me, it doesn't feel like you're part of the team. You're missing out on some of what makes a team, a team. I can tell that she wants to be in there, talking, laughing ect.
There are private bathrooms and there are moms in there anyway.... I understand that there will come a time when this is not reasonable, but at the Mite level?
Maybe that is just the way it is and we have to deal with it.... Just trying to feel out what is the norm.
^^^^ see above....help me out!!

That's a tough one.E.J. I see your point, but parents will just as quickly say I don't have time or can't dress them at home. The other thing is your now the person asking the whole team alter the behavior which is part of the game. You may also see backlash from the boys who have to accommodate. I know Micah has begun to become more modest in the locker room as he approaches 6. I would attempt to accommodate the parent who asked, but know some parents who wouldn't. I guess just email the coach and ask. I have not dealt with this yet, but if a parent asked me I would attempt to accommodate and have parents put bottoms on early. You are always going to have parents who show up last minute though and this will likely never work smoothly.
Tell those damn kids they need get off the grass. Ahhh to be young again. Youth is wasted on the young.
Boy is happy I am burnt out.
THURSDAY~SUNDAY he was on the ice everyday and played roller on Saturday and Sunday.

My kid just got an M11, and played a pretty physical weekend in Detroit at the Warrior Invitational Tournament. At first I was a little hesitant because of the back plate that is used to tighten the helmet, but once the helmet is on and tight, it's not really a concern.
I like how light it feels and I know he likes the increased air flow. We have Cleveland coming down for games tomorrow, I'll see if I can get the wife to get a few pics of it in action (I am always relegated to music and timekeeping at home games!)

It is night and day from her old S3's. The reasoning for moving was restriction(she was getting tight in the legs), though the sizing is off. The Easton to the Bauers, these are huge(though on paper, it is the next move).....should have gone with the same size, which doesn't make sense.... Ahhh, they are not too bad...she is not shrinking.
How did the Detroit tourney go Scott? Love the new avatar!

How did the Detroit tourney go Scott? Love the new avatar!
The boys went 2-2, but didn't make it out of pool play sadly. They lost the first 2, and won the second 2. The funny thing is, his team only has 14 players to begin with and 2 of those are goalies. 1 boy is out with an injury and didn't make the trip and after the first 2 losses another boy got sick and went home.
So for the final 2 games, they rolled 2 lines. It was insane, I'd loved to hear what those teams thought that were beaten with only 10 skaters.
Thanks about the avatar, it's a pic I took a couple weeks ago, and BlackSmyth converted it to the avatar for me.
The boys have Cleveland Lumberjacks coming down tomorrow and Sunday, so cross your fingers!
So after finding this wiping down my skates after Stick & Puck yesterday....
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/SkateHolder.jpg
I wondered about getting the holders replaced, but then just decided on new skates. Unfortunately, with a size 13.5-14 foot depending on brand, I can't just go try a few different skates on at the LHS to see what tickles my toes. Started looking at closeout skates at the different online retailers, came down to some X50's and G5's Pulled the trigger on the G5's this morning.
Seriously wondering if they will fit length wise, depending on the chart you're looking at, they may be a little smaller than the CCM at a 12... In the end, the Little Man's 11W G5's will need to be replaced at some point, for $300 shipped, can't go wrong, even if they just go to him.
I am not sure if it is a big difference, but once you get to 12 in the Graf Skates, it comes with the Cobra NT2000 not the Cobra UltraLight 5000??? Mike???

Micah rocks this shirt and its awesome
http://www.hockeymonkey.com/under-armour-hockey-mpz-long-sleeve-top-yth.html
He's always camping in front of the net and gets crosschecked and hit with sticks a lot. Never bugs him. that shirt really fills in the gaps as the body moves. He loves it. We got it this summer because he was 5 running around against the 7-9 year olds who don't like a little kid screening their goalie. :r The griptech $hit on it is cool also it really does help stuff stick in place. He only wears it for ice as roller there is not a lot of contact. Although he is usually the one getting talked to at roller for playing to physical.
EJ I noticed those pants were huge. I was going to ask if they were JR pants and not youth because them look big. How is the tailbone protection on those? Bauers always seem to have the least amount of tailbone padding of all the pants. I like the CCM/ Reebok pants and the Easton pants for tailbone and kidney pads. With that shirt though its much less of an issue on kidney and spine pad on the pants.
As to the holders. Those prolite 3 were some of the softest holders ever so anything is going to feel a lot stiffer. When I was playing I remember seeing that holder brake in a few games. Sometimes it was a puck in the skate once the dude was stopping. Sure it got cracked earlier on that one. If I remeber right the 5000 is just a different zytel(sp) mix. Supposed to be lighter and stiffer. Don't think most anyone here would notice much of a difference skating on either. You would need to be a high level skater to notice imho which I am not.

On a seperate note today he played a roller game this morning. He is playing in a jamboree tonight for 2 hours. He is supposed to have ice skrim in the morning tomorrow and then roller practice for that travel roller team he's redshirting with. Dads taking him tonight I am at work. :td The roller club is only charging us $20 a month to practice and be an alternate skater if they are short a kid for tournaments. Atleast he has no hockey non-wed every week.
What was really cool today at roller was not the two goals he got but his play off the puck. On Thursday at blackstars practice they worked on a breakout drill. Micahs job is to go to the half board as the kid circles behind the net call for the pass recieve it and feed a kid for the breakout. Everytime he was out there today and he saw a teammate was going to circle he busted as$ to the board called for pass and played it to a teammate. Watching him do this at his age was awesome and made me happy we made the decision to have him play up. If he had played down he would likely be doing the one man show crap.

My kid isn't a huge goal scorer, the team has that area covered. But our team lacks grit, mainly due to the speed and skill, most of our boys don't have to be too physical, they just deke and avoid contact.
My kid on the other hand has found his calling on the team, he is a playmaker and all-around pest. Not the Sean Avery - Matt Cooke type of pest, you can't get away with that kind of crap in youth hockey, but my kid hits hard and finishes his checks and does a great job drawing penalties. He drew 3 penalties on the same kid in one game in Toledo a few weeks ago. He has a way of getting under your skin.
He has also developed a great knack for face-offs, over 3 games this weekend I bet he only lost 6 faceoffs. He did take an interference penalty and the other team started to figure him out in the 3rd game. He has this move where he ties up their stick, and swivels around to block off the other guy in the faceoff while moving the puck back to the point.
So while he isn't lighting up the lamp, he is up there on the team with assists and no one on the team is as physical as he is. He reminds me a lot of Lindros in his play, and although I didn't have a clear view of his faceoff interference penalty, (I do the timeclock and music so I can't see the corners very well) I imagined it was Lindros-like.
So he has been whining for a new stick, I teased him with the "Get me some goals and I'll get you a stick" line. Long story short...(too late!) he got 4 goals and 4 assists in the 3 games this weekend. Then he told what stick he wanted. Bauer APX, *or* if I wouldn't spend that much, Easton EQ50. Does anyone have experience with either of those sticks?
Next time I will put a limit on my bribery, like "Get me some goals and I will buy you a new stick with a manufacturer suggested retail price of $150.00 or less!"
Love it, Scott.... My kind of player!

I'll have to check him out, never heard of him! I love nicknames, although my kid ended up wearing 88 (nothing to do with Lindros in the beginning), and he reminds me of Lindros a lot in his play style, Big C just doesnt suit him for a nickname. Other than the coaches kid, who is Jan 1st 1999 birthdate, my kid is the youngest on the team. I never compare him to the coaches kid cause the coach is a 6'6" Swede. He played junior hockey in Sweden and his kid is probably going to be as tall. My kid is dead in the middle of the road in height on the team, despite being 6-8 months younger than all of the other boys.
His name is Cameron, and of course it's just Cam most of the time (Yea, we named him after Cam Neely). I always liked the nickname Pat Verbeek had, "Little Ball of Hate", but Cam is most likely too big to have the word "Little" in his nickname.
I'll have to start working on a good nickname for him!

Well they screwed me on a pair of skates for the boy. Mixed blessing. How we found the Grafs.
His best friends dad also got screwed on a pair of skates and won't use them again.
I have to say, I would have preferred G5's, but these came home from the LHS today... I was not going to pay retail to put G5's on my feet, so my options changed...
These are actually an 11D....which blows my mind, as I am coming from a CCM 12E that was nowhere near too big. I wouldn't cry if they were an 11.5, but it didn't bother me enough that I blinked about saying let's bake, sharpen and ring them up. As far as the D as opposed to the E....I have no answer.... They felt good before the bake....???
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/Reebok8K.jpg
Tried on a CCM U+10 in an 11, fit the same as you could imagine, though I still felt the Reebok was a little longer, though I assume that was just how my foot was lying in there. The Bauer Supreme and Vapor were MUCH shorter. The 11.5 felt like it would be a 10.5 in the Reebok....my foot wasn't close to getting in there length wise....
P.S. NOT A FAN of the Pump.... I cannot get past that it looks gimmicky...:sh

Better hope the bladders don't blow. Used to happen a fair amount.on certain models a few years back. The Reeboks are allegedly built off the old Tacks platform so it makes sense they would fit. I thought the boot internal padding etc is different now to accomodate the pump. Problem is on lower models without the pump the boot fit can be sloppy as its the same build just no bladders and you know they aren't spending a lot of effort on low end boots. Don't have them anymore, but had an old pair of pump tacks back in the day. So it makes sense its the same boot concept. Atleast that was the story two years ago. The pumps cute it fits you. :r

My silent protest against Micah getting jacked on his 3 number choices.
Being the youngest kid on the team and playing up apparently means you are last in line for many things. He wears 8 for inhouse and his roller team so that's my excuse.

Thought there were some great points in here on development. I know Al has told me to always be careful about not pushing and always making sure its fun. Had a discussion a week or so with Micahs new head coach who played D1 College. The new coach thing is a long story which I am not happy about. The club has switched coaches and apparently he is going to change up a lot of the system they have been developing. He had largely the same view. We had a long discussion about how some early bloomers who burn out and some don't and what he thought the cause was. Also discussed players who blossom late.
I noticed in the video what struck me was not skating the child too much, as much as making sure the child is always having fun when skating and not pushing the child so that the child develops that love of the game. As Micah is skating a lot I always ask him now if he wants to go to hockey. So far he has not said no, but I keep waiting for him to say yes. In talking with the new coach we discussed Micah playing up this year. He was generally not in favor of kids playing up. His view was children need to dominate to build confidence. My view was more of knowing what works for your particular child. Micah had a lot of success last year and is having a lot of success this year. He is very confident as a result which is something I am constantly trying to keep in check. I guess in this situation given his ego and success I don't understand having play down. I think it would give him a huge fat head. I think going forward this point will be a non factor. Nor Cal Hockey which governs all travel teams in the area has banned any child from playing out of age group after Mites. This is the only year Micah will be able to play up.

Hey everyone, wish my kid luck, we head out in the morning for The Bauer International Invite (http://invitebauer.com/index.htm) Tournament in Chicago.
Without a doubt we'll see some kids there who will one day be NHL'ers, my kid included! We got to see a few teams at the Warrior Invitational in Detroit a couple weeks ago that were amazing, and I'm sure some of them and more will be in Chicago. There are plenty of Canadian and even Russian teams on the schedule this year.
His team played 2 years ago (silly paperwork error kept us out last year) and it was a blast. The talent these boys display is unreal.
So, cross your fingers, and I'll report back Sunday night or Monday when we get back.

Some kids rock big pants out here. Always notice it. Seems to me it would slow you down a little. Micah has been growing and could likely change from a youth M to youth L, but he says his pants feel good and are not to tight.
Well, the Little One was shut out today and her team tied. It was good to see them face better competition, but I could tell Ab's was frustrated with her play. She had a nice backhand(shown in pic 3) that was just stopped, but a nice shot anyway.
She played solid and had fun, that is what counts.

The Nike Bauer tournament was a blast this year, our boys did well, made it past pool play but fell in the "Sweet Sixteen". Me and the wife went out of our way to meet and chat with other parents, and everyone was great. Our boys finished in 12th place in the AAA division.
Spent a ton of money on new equipment and deep dish pizza, Chicago is an awesome place. The wife even dragged me into Tiffany's and we looked at some ridiculously overpriced jewelry.
Such a huge tournament! The coaches reception was awesome, only our head coach showed up early enough to make it, so he invited me to tag along with him. The assistant coaches missed out on a great time. Free beer, free food and this:

Just looked at stats. I see the 02 Sharp shooters won the AAA division. That club is based out of the bayarea, but its a phantom club. They exist outside the NorCal Hockey governing board. They only have 1 or 2 teams. A year or so back this 02 club went down to LA and smoked all the SoCal teams. From what I understand its a team composed of all the best players from a few clubs in the area. I think they cheated playing AAA instead of AAA Elite from what I know of them.
98 Jr. Sharks went 2-1? Not sure what that meant.
All and all Nor Cal showed decent.

The website is weird, one page only shows Pool Play stats, and another only shows Playoff Stats. I bet that 2-1 stat is Pool Play. I talked to one of the SJ Jr Sharks dads yesterday, he was pretty cool. But since he was standing with me in Total Hockey, I'm assuming they got eliminated Saturday night in the Sweet Sixteen, just like my kids team did.
If you happen to have made it out of the Sweet Sixteen, then you would have 3 games with very little downtime on Sunday to keep going. They would not have had time to hit up a hockey store between games.
They had 8 pools with 4 teams each, and the top 2 teams from each pool moved on into the Sweet Sixteen. The bottom 2 teams from each pool played other bottom 2 teams in consolation games.
Here are some more pics from the weekend. I do have some hockey action pics, but only from one game and I don't know how well they came out. I'll check those later.

I ended up dropping about 7 bills last week on my kid, mainly because his birthday is this week and we had the opportunity to do some shopping in Chicago.
I broke down and got him the APX, and some Eagle gloves. Before we went to Chicago we bought a pair of used X60 skates in his size, to avoid the 500-600 dollar hit for brand new ones.
Also got him some SuperFeet (http://www.superfeet.com/activity/hockey.aspx) skate insoles for those 60's, I think we're all going to get some for our own shoes. Those things are awesome.

Loaded all 4 kids into the car for Micahs roller game. Now we are at the mall for a Disney event to welcome Santa. This afternoon my dads taking him to his inhouse game.
Poll question. Dec 31 there is a one day cross ice tournament. He was scheduled to play with his club team in the Mite Exhibition division. His best friends dad wants to reform the team we used in a 6U tournament last year that beat everyone badly. If given the choice he wants to play in the 7U division with his buddies. Would you make him play mite exhibition basically club level 8u or let him do a 7u team?

Tell him we wish him luck and remember "dangle, snipe, celly, repeat"
Have the boys gear in the washing machine on sanitize setting. FACK! 4-5 days a week and his gear is ripe. Take it out after every skate and let it air only does so much. The other day I had to dress him before we left. Yeah that car ride was crap.

One of these days I will get around to learning how to take a decent action shot. We had 2 games today at Gilmour Academy in Cleveland, both sheets of ice there had excellent lighting but I always find myself trying to watch the action with one eye and the viewfinder with the other.
I would love to take better pics, but I can't NOT watch the game!
Other than blowing kids up on the blueline, this is where my son really gets under the skin of opponents. Occasionally he'll snow-shower the goalie but he doesn't do that often. The Ref's really don't put up with that. But more than once today in this game he was bearing down hard on the goalie and forced him to cover the puck. He swears he doesn't say anything and he doesn't really linger there after the whistle but boy do they love to start pushing and shoving when he does this.
His team had a great weekend, tied the Cleveland Warriors 98's 4-4, then beat them 7-0, beat the Cleveland Lumberjacks 4-0 and beat the Western Michigan Hounds 4-3.
Here he is in one of the only good shots I got off today:

I bought a tron basic(1pc) and a Sherwood RM7 shaft, from a friend for $40. He put my blade on for me. The Aluminum was gifted to me from a teamate. The blade is shattered, and just fell out, so we'll see.

Got a monkey order coming today. Suprisingly they had everything in stock. Normally they are horrible. Apparently its also arriving today. For instate they are using a small carrier instead of UPS as they take 5-7 days even on instate stuff.

so we live across the street from the school. The delivery company delivered our package of hockey gear to the school. :sl
today Micah worked on transitions and some body position concepts after school on blades for over an hour in the garage, then went to ice practice, got home and he wanted to work on transitions and one timers in the garage. Had to force him out of the Garage to get ready for bed. Had to promise we would work on stuff tomorrow, He has the ice jamboree this weekend on Fri and Sat, and the roller tourney on Sunday and he is showing a lot of drive to try to be the best he can. Its cute to hear him talk about this weekend.

So far so good. I heard a few guys talking about them yesterday, the pro guys at roller are sponsered by them. One of them said they have been snapping like twigs. I'm two games in, and it looks like I have had it a lot longer.
I think I'll use the Aluminum one to keep my hood open... :)

Our boys usually have practice on Thursday, but obviously this week it was different. The coach scheduled practice for tonight. It seems no one had ice time scheduled for the slot after our coach had, so our boys had a 2:20 practice tonight.
We thought that 1 hour and 20 minutes was a long practice, but 2 hours a 20 minutes straight? freaking insane.

Up at 6am to drive 40 min to the jamboree. Just got off the ice after playing 2 games. Get to feed the kid then two more games this afternoon. Working tonight.
Tomorrow 3 games but we don't start till 11. Will post some pics, but I need a telescopic lens. Can't get any great photos.
Had my first ever **** talking parent incident. Micah and a couple of the boys are pretty good skaters and will often pull spinoramas to get around kids. This mom from Stockton ( known for its crime and violence) starts chirping apparently after her son got skinned that the boy should take up figure skating. I responded "wow mom of the year chirping a 7 year old for being a good skater." I also reminded her they were little kids and she may want to settle down. She did not appear happy with my comments, but did shut down the trash talking. Who the hell trash talks little kids? Worst of all she trash talked a kid for having great skating skill. Wasn't my kid, but it was frustrating to see.

Use that metal stick to snap someone's composite if they go game 7.I have been using the Tron basic goalie stick to play in an over 50 league. The stick is heavy but I like that because it has a very controlled flex which is nice when trying to control a stick save. I have had a couple shatter when hit with a very heavy slap shot or one timer. I want to try their chest protectors and leg pads, both need to be replaced and Tron seems to have very nice pricing and shipping costs. It is kind of funny that California seems to have more hockey super stores than the home of hockey in New England. The Tron sticks remind me of Koho sticks if that helps on the rebadging. Both are heavy, very well made and very flex controlled.:tu

The hockey weekend from hell ended at about 4pm today.
Today micah played Jesus on the inhouse team put together for the norcal cup roller tourney. They lost the championship 9-2. Micah had a goal and the assist on the second goal in the championship. They got smoked. Was proud of him. He knew they were going to lose and killed himself trying to keep the game competitive. The kids got to win some games and had a great time. I was proud he played a part in making kids have a good time and win. There were some big smiles out there.
Ice hockey mite jamboree Friday and Saturday. The team won the jamboree against the Stockton team mentioned before. Micah scored 3 of his teams 9 goals and had a few assists in the championship game per my dad who was there. Put the puck in the net a lot in the last 3 days.
Will see if any of the pictures from ice turned out okay.

Was waiting to respond until they actually played a game... But he made the team and they play their first exhibition today.... Have NO IDEA what to expect....
Truth be told, it has been a less than stellar experience so far. VERY POORLY run so far from the administration aspect.... Close to zero communication(worst I've had in all my years of sports with the kids), schedule set and then cancelled completely to start from scratch.... LM is excited to be out there, but it has been a bit of a clusterpuck @ best....
So I guess we will go to the rink and see what happens. Prepare to be picture bombed....:r

Boy got recruited to play for this unofficial roller team formed from
Basically its all 6 year olds that are supposed to play mite 7-8 year old players. I said maybe. They want to go play in some tourney like 1.5 hrs away next week. Not so sure.
He's currently trying to do a between the legs Michigan on roller. hoping he will be able to pull it on ice by mid summer. He is obsessed with trick shots. I showed him this video and he says he wants to learn all this. I think roller is awesome for learning puck skills.

Took a beating on the ice today with the Select Team.... The team looked a mix of tired and disinterested. Jackson spent 3 separate occasions in the box(cross check, elbowing, high stick)...the last giving them a hat trick worth of kids in the box(pictured)....
All that said, it was ice time and the parents seem to be a nice bunch....so it wasn't a total loss.

Hah!
I am on the board for my son's league, and this weekend the rink was packed with games from house, select travel and my son's team hosted 2 AAA teams for a round-robin weekend.
Saturday night I got an email from the board, there was some incident with a select travel game. Apparently a bunch of kids from one team didn't have mouth guards and they got warned. A parent went to the pro shop and bought enough for all the players but the coach refused to make them wear them.
Then it got out of hand. In the end, the coach got enough penalties that he cannot coach again until there is a hearing.
I don't know 100 percent of the details, because there was even more issues with another game. In this one, the Refs were berating the parents working the clock, even using derogatory language towards the players.
Oh the wonderful world of Youth Hockey!
Couple of the Little One this weekend... Man it was a physical game, the coach even said something apologetic to me after....(the team they played did need to be reigned in a bit). I think sometimes he feels like he needs to protect her... But truth be told, I think she is the most physical kid on their team.

How did the boy & the Steam do this weekend, Scott?
Pretty much what we expected. We hosted the #10 team, Indy Ice and a team closer to our ranking, #65 Pittsburgh Selects (coached by Mario Lemieux's brother). Our boys are ranked #58 in the USA.
We beat Pittsburgh the 2 times we played them and lost to Indy both times we played them. Pittsburgh did beat Indy once, so they got a great moral boost.
We lost 4 very good players to Indy 2 years ago, 3 defensemen and a goalie, so they are our most hated rivals. Sadly, we haven't beat them in 3 years, so we cheered Pittsburgh in their victory today.
Happy Holidays....:D

That Christmas pic is great!
I forgot to mention earlier, when we were leaving the rink after the games this weekend, one of our dads came up to me and asked if I'd be interested in buying a stick he just got for his kid. He ordered it online and forgot to check if it came with stickum. His kid hated it and only used it this weekend.
So I was able to pick up an Easton Stealth RS intermediate for $75.00, its less than a week old and was only used in 4 games. The dad was so pissed, he thought his kid was being spoiled about not wanting to play with it without the stickum, but he didn't want to just give the stick away.
My kid won't stop growing, and luckily there are a handful of boys on the team bigger than him, so I'm working the 'Hand-me-down' angle as often as I can. Got him X60 skates last month, then this stick, and we also got him an Easton Synergy girdle from one of the families for him to try.
There are a few boys on the team who swear by girdles as opposed to regular hockey pants. The ones we just got are only 1 size larger than my kid is wearing now (which is too small) so I don't think he will be in them too long, they look snug but I'm told they are meant to be. I like the idea of all that extra protection being form-fitted, so we'll see how he likes it. Anyone have experience with the girdle and shells?

Nice that's the price on the youth version.
I checked out the youth version and Easton returned to making the youth sticks with the kevlar wrapped blade on the Stealth RS youth same as the big version. At 70-75 its the best made/longest lasting stick for 8U. The EQ50 was a pile of $hit in the youth version, blade chipped and broke easily. Micah has been using the S19 I grabbed for $40 for about 4 months and its holding up well. Thats skating 4-5 days a week. Hoping between this one and the other we will make it till late summer and the clearance sales.

That reminds me, we bought Cam an intermediate APX in November. My wife made some comment in passing about 'don't break it too fast, it cost $240'. The kid said 'I'll be careful with it.' Then I said Hell no, don't change *anything* you do, cause you'll change EVERYTHING trying to be careful with the stick!
I know sticks break and wear down pretty fast, compared to other equipment, and with prices like that (the RS and APX are virtually the same price) you sure don't want your kid breaking it on day 31, but you also don't want him thinking about breaking the stick every single shift.
As far as my kid, I told him to stop thinking about it right now, go play your game like always and if the stick does break on day 31, we'll deal with it then.
I know the APX and the Stealth RS are supposed to be strong top of the line sticks, but I watched one of the smallest kids on our team (barely 100 pounds soaking wet) break 2 APX's in the last 2 months (they may have been Juniors, I will have to ask). I feel pretty bad for his parents, they were only like 2 weeks outside the 30 day no-questions window on the first one.
The one thing we found out early on was that you truly get what you pay for. We don't go buying the newest-latest just for the sake of having it (although we do have parents on the team that do that). We just try to be smart about spending our money, especially now that it seems he is growing faster and faster.
Hand-me-downs are saving us hundreds right now, and I hope to continue that trend as long as possible!

A kid on my sons team broke his APX(adult) about 40 days in....:td I hope my son's does not see the same fate. Interesting, as he replaced it with a RS. He has had an X60, TotalOne, APX and now a RS in the past 18ish months... I am interested to see what he thinks...

How long did the other guy have it?
As to the stick thing all I can say is Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
Chipped the toe and have a crack in the bottom of his blade this week. Glad the stick was $40 on closeout. There are things I won't skimp on like skates, helmet and protective gear, but I can't see buying the premium sticks at full price. Pros will go through a few a game often. I guess it depends on style of play and position. When I see guys like Joe Thorton using a two piece stick, Patrick Marleau still goes back and forth from one and two piece, and others it shows the stick is not as critical depending on the player and style of play. If your a Dman or a sniper like Ovie I see the value of a highend one piece.
He has a jamboree on Saturday, then we are putting him in turcotte stick handling class next week. Will tape it up and it will make it another week. Looks like Santa will be bringing that second stick I bought on closeout for Christmas. Hoping spring brings some deals

Christmas break is:
Today san Jose to vacaville for a mite jamboree
12/21-12/23 turcotte stick handling class in san Jose
Pending 12/23 mite jamboree in san jose. Been asked to be on a few teams, but have not decided
12/31 mite jamboree in Oakland. Possibly playing for a second team. :r
No practices over the next two weeks
January is going to be nuts also, he's playing for a roller club in the NARCH Winter Nationals, doing one or two jamborees, and doing a power skating class at the end of the month.

Spent over 220 at hockeymonkey yesterday. May do something crazy that will have Al shaking his head. Got to wait to see if it works. :)
Jackson had the game winner with 1M left tonight.... So proud of him.... Slid in from the point, pass and slap shot.....BOOM.... He is sooooo pumped.... Love this stuff....
Abby found the back of the net 8 times today in their game....

He did really well. Hoping a teamates dad can recover the video files I deleted. He had his dangles working hard. He did very well it was a lot of house kids, but as the pictures show he is a young 6 and pretty much everyone there was 7 or 8 so it was nice. He skated through big kids almost at will.
forgot to mention he had this sequence behind the net were he changed directions 5 times and finally got the wraparound. It was classic.
^^^GREAT STUFF, Mike.... Don't know how I missed this until now!
That first sequence is really nice... Look at him separate and leave #35....:r

HTis coach said he was ready for the turcotte class.
As a whole he's having a lot of fun because he's a super social kid and loves chopping it up out there, but watching him try to toe drag to pass off inside skate and kick back to stick was fail. He just decided to do toe drags.
Edit.
He's having a lot of fun though and seems to picking up a few things.
Just finished a good skate at the day before Christmas Drop In.... We will hit the day before New Year's one as well.... I have a sneaking suspicion that the next one will have far more kids than this one.
I didn't skate and ran stairs while the Little One was out on the ice. There was a mom in the stands, guy on the ice blowout that would have made a sailor blush. I am not exactly sure what the guy(another dad) did on the ice, but whatever it was, set off a expletive laced tirade that lasted a good 20-30 seconds that ended with "Stay the #&^$ away from my kid!"
From what I pieced together, I think her kid was the best skater on the ice and his kid may have been one of the goalies. From what I gather, he was sick of the kid blasting away at his kid, wanting him to pass to some of the younger kids???(Mite/Squirt Drop in)
I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but I was running on and off the entire time, so who knows.... The kid in question fed Abby a ton, she was quite fond of him...
Anyway....odd....

little mans new rollerblades. Nobody does roller, but thats an ice boot on a roller chasis. Had fit.issues with current skate so just went for something we knew was safe. Reebok stopped making the tri d chassis. It skates more like an ice skate. Tri d is short for tri directional. chassis skates more like an ice skate as it rocks.
They look great, Mike.... Can't wait to hear what he thinks about them after putting some time in 'um....

Just got back from Nashville, the third year our boys have played in the Music City Invitational. This year they came out of Pool Play as the first seed, but fell in the Semi's to the eventual tournament winners, Russell Stover 98's from Kansas City.
I love Nashville! This year they hosted a Bowl Game, so most of downtown was closed off to traffic and people were everywhere. The weather was great and we even found a great pancake place this morning by accident on the way out of town. The Pancake Pantry has the best pancakes I have ever had. We got lucky and got seated in only about 20 minutes, but by the time we left the line to get in was around the corner and down the street.
Our boys played some great teams this year, several of which we'd never seen before. The Connecticut Jr. Bobcats were a tough, big team and Russell Stover was great.
Other than a few trips to Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus and a couple local tournaments, our major travel is over for the season and I'm sad. We dig the travel as much as the boys like playing. They are our own little vacations.
Happy New Years to all my fellow Hockey Parents!
Sounds like a great time, Scott. I have never been to Nashville, but would like to get there someday.
Happy New Year to you!
Well, in a little bit we will head to the 3rd rink in the past 24 hours. 2 High School JV games and one house league game with the Little One. Forgot the camera for the High School game last night, but here are a few shots from this afternoon....

Only one goal today, but a solid all around game....
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/Wildcats4-3.jpg
Though the JVers pulled another tie tonight, felt like a loss. Gave up the tying goal with under a minute to go and an empty net in front of them. Just a bad ending. 1-1.
On the flip side, their only goal of the night, came off the boys stick. He took this rough, super cheap shot as he was coming down the ice....puck was never anywhere near him. Convinced it was retaliation for his nasty play in front of the net. Anyway, he was not hurt and seemed amused by the whole thing as the penalty was being sorted out.(5 minute major)
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/JVvDavis5.jpg
Didn't take long for the Little Man to take advantage of the penalty.... This was such a GREAT slap shot that went top corner. Goalie didn't have a chance.... I was yelling at him that he had time(actually was surprised he didn't slide in from the point more before firing it), so didn't get a pic of the actual shot... I seriously could have hit him with a piece of popcorn he was so close as he took it. Celebration is just fine.

Oh and maybe one of the coolest things of the night.... I was at the tunnel as the kids came out, telling them good job ect.... Then the refs come off the ice and one is saying to the other, "That #14 on white was a monster." Made my night....:r
Varsity no longer undefeated.... Gave up 3 goals(1 EN) in the last 4:07 to lose by 2 to the 2 time defending state champs. Not their best effort. Both teams were undefeated and one had to lose.....still tough to take.

Played 3 half ice games this morning. Followed by a full ice game for the championship.
Kid played well. Very well. In the championship game against trivalley he had 3 points. 2 goals and 1 assist in a 5 to 5 tie. They won in a shoutout. Trivalley was bigger but kids played a team game and or goalie played well.

Will post a video of his penalty shot goal from championship game. Had a breakaway and kid dove and used stick to take out his legs.
Scarry moment. Got tangled with kid went into boards head hit the boards and his arm was up as he fell. He then laid there. Thought he might have gotten knocked out. Nope, Hurt his knee. Everyone was like WTF knee? Had a limp off ice, but when out there skated like usual. Lot of hustle today. Was super proud of his compete today.

There is a kid on my son's team, the Captain in fact, he is the biggest kid on the team, and one of the older 98's...he never learned to ride a bike.
The boy can play virtually any sport but they said he just never wanted to ride a bike.
On a side note, our boys had 4 games in Detroit this weekend, 2-2 again, it seems to be a recurring theme this year :)
My kid is settling in nicely to his role as pest, he took a penalty in each game, roughing, boarding, slashing and roughing.
We were in a hurry to get up there Friday to beat the weather (didn't work out too well) and I told my kid I'd pack everything for him so we could leave when he got off the bus. We get up Saturday morning and head to Plymouth and my kid calls me from the locker room, he had NO jerseys or socks. I packed his practice gear. Doh.
So each game this weekend, he wore the jersey of whichever goalie wasn't starting. It was hilarious after a while, the coaches were yelling "Go Hickey! and Go Ison!" (The goalie names, their parents were yucking it up as well when my kid took penalties or scored, it ended up being pretty fun)

Nice! Glad it worked out. The coach on his club team had to give everyone a nickname. That would have been even stranger for you I would think. We were even provided with a laminated card with all nicknames and info. At first it was fun now its lame and most of us just use their names. Micah is Thor because of hair and style of play. He wanted Pikachu, but coach wouldnt allow it.
Micah was boarded for the first time on Saturday in inhouse by a rather dusty kid. He was repeatedly victimizing the kid taking the puck, deeking him and making him fall and occasionaly yard sale his stick. He went to the board to get the puck amd this just decides to skate up and hit him from behind. He was close to the boards so he wasnt hurt. He was clearly pissed. He turns around and punches the kid in the facemask and pushes him. I guess being 8 and having a 6 year old keep beating you gets a kid mad.
None of this was that bad. I am largely a believer that kids need to police themselves on most types of hits. what concearned me was what the kids father did after the hit. He was at the wall where it happened and I dont know if he told his son to do it. What I noticed was when it happened his dad cheered loudly. When the shift ended his dad went near where his kid was got his attention and gave him a fist pump and cheered him. That was my WTF moment and I decided I would make him miserable and troll him hard. I grabbed another parent and moved over near where he was. We make little comments everytime he tries to trip or kid or gets his pocket picked. Towards the end of the game the kid gets pissed after the boy steals the puck from him again and the kid decides to get his stick blade in Micahs facemask and push at him. I go for the knockout shot at this point. I look at buddy and say wow has this kid ever played hockey before? He boards, he trips, he highsticks. Id be so proud. I made eye contact with the kids dad and smiled. Guy had nothing to say now. I probably shouldnt have, but I got so pissed that a parent would cheer and encourage his kid to run someone. It happens, but you dont encourage it.
Good day yesterday on the ice.... Both kids teams won, both found the back of the net. Odd the Little Man is lighting the lamp so much lately. I posted a bit back that he isn't known for his scoring, but now has goals in 3 of their last 4(JVers) and they are 2-2-0 after starting the season with loss after loss. Some type of ying/yang thing going on, the Varsity who was(is?) one of the favorites for the State Title, has lost 2 straight(one game to go before the playoffs) after starting the season winning 11 straight.
So as stated, not known for scoring, but is known for his defensive play....and apparently going into the box. Last night, visited there not once, not twice....but three times. His mother said "It's a box trick." All the parents around us were yucking it up when he went in the first time, "He just doesn't feel like it's a game if he doesn't get in there, huh." That just continued when the others happened.
The other team never capitalized on the penalties, but I stress that they will.... That said, they never seem to be terrible penalties or overtly dirty play....but Christ, 3 trips and leading the team in PM for the year....:td

Nice pics. Looking at goal celly I realized the boy doesnt do it. Its kind of weird. The most he does is a stick lift and thats not all the time.

Heading to the last Varsity regular season game here in a half hour.... This is going to be BIG.... We went from undefeated and the #1 seed in their division, to the number #4 in the past 2 weeks. Losses to #2 & #3.... Team we are playing tonight is now #1. We cannot drop out of the #4 related to points we have already accrued, but a win tonight would be big for the boys confidence. Losing the last 2 has been tough....

Busy day today..... Utah High School Skills Competition and then 2 games. Went Fun, 1 & 1.

We had about an hour and 15 minutes from when we left the Skills Comp to drive 30 minutes and get to the arena where they were playing their games tonight... We stopped at a local burger joint(his choice) on the way, picked up two big burgers & a large fry and he pounded them on the way. 2.5 hours on the ice, short break where you pound that type of food and then 2.5 hours on the ice and you don't puke???? To be young again...:r
Have decided that if he is going to go into the box every game, I'm going to shoot him there.... Along with the 2 burgers and a fry, he had 3 Gatorades...

This was such a BOMB from the point.... BOOM!
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/JB6-1.jpg
Notice, different jersey, game 2...back in the box. Honestly, this was not his deal. He had a break and was hit from the side and ran the goalie. One of their guys didn't take kindly to that and one then lead to another....and both sit for 5.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/JB7-1.jpg
Threw this in, as it was a crazy play. The LM clipped the kid behind him(he was breaking into the zone) and the ref didn't get out of the way. He ten-toed that ref and I really didn't know if he(the ref) was getting up. He laid on the ice for a while(game still going). When he did get up, his arm was hanging. Think he probably landed on his back and elbow.....bet that hurt. Look at the face of our coach and the players on the bench....they're like, oh...this isn't going to end good.

I hate this time of year. People talking about leaving, joining other teams, so much is in play. Today was the worst, we all got an email from the Head Coach, he got a new job and is moving out of state.
His long time assistant (and former co-coach) is taking over the team but this throws so much up in air that it's impossible to tell what kind of team we'll end up with.
I normally allow my kid to choose what teams, if any he tries out for, but I think this year I'm gonna insist that he attends a couple others. There is only one other AAA team in our area, about the same drive we make now, and I hate the thought of having to jump to another team
I'm gonna try and keep positive and hope things work out, but I can't help but feel betrayed a little by the coach. All we have heard for 3 years was how important it is to keep the boys together and then he bails on the entire team with a 1 month notice.
Not sure what to think of this yet, we just found out a couple hours ago. One other dad said his kid acts like someone died, he's never had another coach.
Sorry to hear, Scott.... Hope things fall into place and it all works out how you'd like.

Scott it happens I am already seeing it.
Hell we are not coming back to the team hes on now. Couple of the kids have crap/ dangerous on ice behavior. They switched the coach on us mid year and I dont like his style at all. Worse the coaches kid is a huge dbag and the coach just looks away when his kid is punching or pushing at a teamate. Micah no longer wants to even attend practices do to the chaos. With 4 weeks to go and no more scheduled games for us we allowed him to decide. He said he just wants to play inhouse for the rest of the year and skip the clubs final 4 weeks. When the youngest kid on the team is trying to break things up there is a serious problem.
We are friends with the three people who will be coaching the premier team in yhe area next year so we will play there or just play inhouse next year. The coach really is the most important factor on chosing a team it appears

Well, I haven't even pulled the pics off the camera...but OUCH. Playing as a sacrificial lamb in the Great Western Showcase as a U16 team(dumped all the older kids off the HS Select team and picked up some fill ins). Practiced once(LM couldn't be there due to HS Playoffs) and took a BEATING game one. I am not lying when I say I think we had 3 shots on goal. Have not taken a beating like that for a LONG time.
All that said, I thought the LM was the best D man on his team and quite possibly the standout of their team, though that is difficult to determine with the puck constantly in our own zone. He was physical and active. He wasn't perfect, sent a puck into the middle that was picked off and sent top corner....:td
Tomorrow we get to do it again.... We'll see what Wyoming or Montana have to offer....
Yesterday was better, but we still lost. Today they finish pool play at 9:00 AM and then into the elimination round(which should be one game:o).
It is ice time....but this team, as constructed, isn't going to scare anyone.
Can see the LM is getting frustrated.... Really good first game, worse yesterday. Lack of focus, other than letting anyone close to him, know he is there.... I am hoping that a good nights rest will get him straight.
Massacre....

Round 3 of the playoffs tonight. Playing a one loss team that is really good. We beat them in the preseason, but that doesn't mean a lot now. Did not play in the regular season.
The Little One had her first individual power skating lesson yesterday. Amazing what can be done in 30 minutes. Going to do these weekly for 10 weeks or the Little One decides she doesn't want to go, then reevaluate.
Quite possibly our number 1 player is out again....UGH. 2 games and someone ^#&%@#$ enough and he is a no go for the rest of the playoffs, including tonight.
No worries, good guys win!
Out C scores his second to tie the game and gives the crowd a hello...

Let's find a winning goalie to hug!

Thanks for coming out!

At this point, can finish no lower than 4th.... One more win, puts them in the State Championship Game.
Playing tonight at 9:00 for a slot in the State Championship Game. The team we are playing is undefeated and beat us 5-3 January 30th. GO SPARTANS!
Kick in the jimmy tonight... Lost to a team we beat twice this year. A win would have had us in the State Championship Game & into Nationals, win or lose that game.... But we went down 4-3....I'm sick.....can't enen imagien playing without these guys.....ugg..... We're done...

Sucks man. Sorry to hear.
Got a discount code to TH. Going to use then will post it and see if you guys can usr it.
Ordering a ez goal for the boy and a ton of odds and ends.
Made a huge homade skill / shooting pad for 30.00. Works really well.
Sad this season is ending and already preping him for next year. Looking at summer clinics
Thanks, I'm still bummed.... I hate to see the team lose their last one.... It is also tough to see kids leave the ice for the last time with their HS team....
The night started right, Abby sending the team out, like she always does... This is the Head Coach getting his send out.... Oh how she loves this team...
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/PvB1.jpg
Though we never had a lead, we tied it up twice....

This is the worst part of a season, losing seniors...

Our C....and such a GREAT KID....
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/PvB16.jpg
Yea, post after you use.... I just ordered skates for the LO, I hope they work out... Her Supreme's work great(she has grown out of them), but she wants Vapors(100% looks).... So I am hoping that going from the D to EE will come close to being the same volume.....
IW has free shipping, so I guess I can just send them back... But she'll say they are fine until she has to skate in them for 1.5 hours....
Nice win today.... Don't know if I like her celebration or the look on her coaches faces during her celebration better....:r

Our boys are having their last games of the season this weekend. The Taylor Metcalf Tournament at Miami University in Oxford Ohio. The first night we were only there a few minutes and the tornado sirens were going off, everyone in the arena had to go to the shelter areas.
Luckily Oxford was spared but tornadoes hit all around the area. We already planned our last team dinner for tonight, not knowing what tomorrow would be like (Sunday), but our boys pulled out a win against a great team, the Green Bay Gamblers. They are through to the semi's tomorrow morn and are guaranteed a consolation game as well, so its a good weekend no matter what as far as ice time goes!
Our team mom put together a couple gifts for the departing coach, and I got some crappy cell phone pics. One is a team jersey framed for him, and another is team photo autographed by the boys. They also put together a book for him with pics of each boy and a personal note from each.
Here are the pics:

It still sucks we're losing him, but now that we know more details, with the assistant coach taking over, and all the new bites we have from other players in the area that want to try out, I'm feeling better about next year.
Happy to read you're feeling better about next year, Scott. Good luck tomorrow & be safe.
Early(pre bake) fit doesn't seem tight at all.... Like I said, the proof will be after a good skate.....

Going to go get them sharpened and profiled tomorrow... Not going to say a thing to her and see how it goes....
She's been skating & killing on the Supremes, so I hope it isn't a recipe for disaster, but we'll see how it goes.....
That said, she'll finish the season on the One60's tomorrow.... The X5.0's won't go on her feet for a bit. Maybe at power skating next week.... We're hitting a bit of a break as far as hockey goes, though have weekly power skating lessons going.....and have skills clinic coming up as well....

I would do a pubskate or gretzky hour first. Its a prett dramatic change if used to a traditional youth profile. Would also have the radius changed to 9 foot as I thought most you skates are 11ft for stability for most kids.
Well, besides me, it looks like it will be a Bauer skate family.... Supreme's discounted on Friday and with another 10% with the PLAYERS10 code, picked up some One100's for the LM for approx. 28% off. Add in free shipping and it was just too good to pass up.
That said, it will be interesting to see what he thinks about them vs Graf's, which he has been skating in FOREVER....
Oh...and he went away from the fishbowl on Saturday... He said he hated the cage for the first 20 minutes and then just didn't notice anymore....
It has been an expensive last few weeks of being hockey parent...Skills Clinic, cage, new bag, stick, 2 pair of skates, some socks.....:gary
^^^ I don't know if it is my inpatients or just incompetence on their part, but with today’s technology, I can't understand how something ordered before noon yesterday, isn't shipped with a tracking number in my hand today.
26 hours and doesn't look like my order is even processed.... There is a reason I rarely use hockeygiant or hockeymonkey anymore....and this is it. If this was with icewarehouse, my order would be half way here by now, delivery would be tomorrow....

Well as long as he wasnt skating in a 709 or 70 series Graf he may be okay. I think you said he wore a 703? If thats the case you are fine with bauer. 705 or 35 ending on skate is a toss up, but possibly okay. I know the boy and I both are wearing 70 series now and cant wear bauer. I heard the new nxg was supposex to be a deeper boot. Actually debating buying his next 2 skates in the same model boot just to make sure I dont go through skate issues.
Hate summer. He apparently has a good chance of making a summer tournament team. They are supposed to go down to LA atleast once though which I am not interested in doing. If I did that team though I could sign him up for a weekly skate/scrim with a seperate team and have him skating four days a week at a high level with scrims for all spring and into summer. Would kind of kill yhe need to do a camp. Trying to talk a buddy into doing the same.

Forgot just how much I like to read and view this thread. Never seem to have the time to check in. Anyway, keep up the great job of keeping me up with the life of a hockey parent. EJ that photo of the two seniors hugging clearly shows the bond this great sport develops. I got some dust in my eyes on that one. Brought back some very strong memories.
Be well boys.
I'll stop by when I can.

Just popped in to say that even old guys have a "hockey parent".
Me and my Hockey Dad after my team won the men's league championship the other night.

I love it Tom! Did your Dad ever play? Everyone always asks me how Cam got into hockey, did I play, etc etc.
I never played but there are a ton of boys on my kids hockey team who have dads that played.
What a great picture, Tom.... Awesome!

Bought skates for the kid. Hes hitting that point where I will likely be buying skates more then once a year because of growth. :td
Took a huge gamble and went with these.

Got them in EE(wide for any nn hockey person reading) which I was amazed they made in Youth size 12. I am concearned about the arch in the Bauers as he has no arch like dad. That said many people have reported they were able to get kids who wore Reeboks to wear these. This model the one 100 is actually heat moldable for youths and can allegedly accomodate a high instep. Was going to go with Reeboks but these were cheap as they are 2 years old now so everyone is blowing them out. If they dobt fit I will return and wait till next month when the new Reebok boots release at the middle of the month. Paid less then 70 shipped figured wortg a shot

Have you looked into any area store that may have a leasing program? That's what I did when my kid started needing more than one pair a year.

All we have here is play it again sports. Given the fact that his foot is a little funky it limits us. The nice thing is he is the oldest of 4 all with the same feet so it may be good in a way. We are starting to swap gear and he has a fair number of older friends as he is playing up and now ending his third year. Got the Bauers today and he liked them. He said he had no hot spots in the foot. Said the ankle was a little different but fine.
Going to get them sharpened tonight and let hin wear them tomorrow night as he has a game.looks like I wont be able to get the heel wedged though so it will be interesting to see hiw he does going from a forward pitch to a nuetral pitch.
Nice, Mike.... Interested to see how this goes... Jackson is going from G5's to One100's.... Though not that switch, Ab's is going from One60's to 5.0....but D's to EE's....

I don't think my Dad has ever been on skates, Scott, though he has been a hockey fan for life and gave me my love for the game.

Hes got a game tonight. Dropped them off last night to get sharpened. They said they would try to wedge the heels, but not sure they could get it done by tonight. Hes a little sick so it may be a interrsting night. Going to trt to get him to skate at pub skate a bit before the game.
After looking at the one100 he should be fine. The Graf 370 is a very deep boot, and definetly deeper and wider then the G5. The one100 is almost as deep as the 370. Deeper then the G5 and about as deep as the 370 . Very glad I went EE though as the boot isnt very wide. Even in EE its slightly narrower then the 370 but he said it was fine.
