just at a glance the screen looks more contrast-y... but i've seen close ups that show the PPI of each and how big of a change it is.
yes, that was just a quick pic. you really have to see it in person.

Totally rocks!!!
What a neat toy.
I tried out the multitasking also. Really sweet.
On a separate note, does anyone know how to make the magic mouse scroll?
Just got one as moved on from my Mighty Mouse and can't seem to get that part down.

but scroll is with one finger- which can be confusing if you use both a laptop (two fingers scroll) and a magic mouse (1 finger)

Yeah,
Was in the middle of installing it when it hit me like a brick over the head.
The darn thing warned me it would need to re-start.
Halfway through it, I forced quit the installation as my iphone is in the process of being set up with my stored information.
What a mess that would have been.

Disconnected it and tried again and finished in no time.

I resisted until after the second screen cracked and haven't had a problem since.
You have to poof a little baby powder on the inside plastic screen so it doesn't bubble and not use the belt clip holster though. The holster allows the phone to fly off in my experience.
I also found you need to open up the tab that covers the charge port or you get an echo when talking and the Otterbox doesn't allow charging with anything other than the factory charger, which sucks in the car as it's a pain to open up.
I'm kinda rough on stuff, so the Otterbox is a necessary evil. This takes out the benefit of the slimmer design of the 4 and leaves me wondering what features warrant an immediate upgrade...

YouTube's compression makes the video look like ass. The in phone video 720 HD is spot on. It does have the CMOS "jello" effect when not perfectly stable and moving. This was hand held.

Carlos, I've been using my otterbox from day one. They are incredible.
I bought Lisa one for on her motorcycle, but she didn't use it regular. Now she does.
We literally tried every cover worth trying, I read all the reviews and tied up a small fortune in cases. The otter box is the best by a longshot.
It does as bulk, but I can roll my phone down the steps all day and it won't get hurt.
The coolest looking covers were the metallic Noel series. Dustin (XXX) said he and Echo got them and they were gorgeous. They were. The only problem was that they killed our reception and our GPS wouldn't work.
I won't ever look for another phone cover. Otter Box is the sh!t.

I've got the Comuter Series case for my 3G and imo it's the best case I've ever had for it. Currently I'm on the list to be notified when the iPhone 4 version is ready. The Defender case doesn't look too bulky for the iPhone 4 like it did for the 3G/3Gs.

Just picked up the Belkin clear case for the phone at Best Buy.
Looks and works great.
Barely adds any size to the phone and cushions it well. Beats the bumper being sold by Apple and it is very soft material that won't scratch up the phone as the harder cases will, specially when dust particles get caught up in there.
Knowing me, I will forever search for more cases I like but this one is great for now.

After almost a day of playing with the phone nearly constantly, i think I can safely say that this is the most insanely amazing electronic device I've ever used. :banger Aside from the alleged design flaw (which I cannot replicate with any degree of consistency or predictability to conclude it's an *actual* flaw), the iPhone 4 both beautiful and functionally lightyears beyond anything I've ever used ... especially the Blackberry from which I'm switching over.

Scott,
The OS 4 is a mess with the 3 and 3G. The phones have actually slowed down a lot.
I think Apple messed up in putting that system on an older phone that was likely really intended for the 4. Or, on the other hand, maybe it was intentional to sell more 4's.
With the iPhone 4, you fly through it, literally. It is so, so fast as compared to the 3 series.
The screen is amazing.
The feel is awesome.
Candidly, regardless of whether one is an Apple fan or not, you cannot help but be awed by this phone if you use it. As Dokk said, truly an incredible device and a testament to Apple's innovativeness when it comes to this type of technology. Love them or hate them, they totally rock. I am just glad as heck I am on the "user" side.:D
BTW,
Fact Time is a riot.
Awesome to be able to toggle back and forth between front camera and back camera, even while on a conversation.

Myles,
Since you are going to threadjack to teach me English, let me correct you.
When I said you fly through it, literally, there is no error in my ways or usage.
I emphasized "you fly through it", which is the meaning, intent or use of literally.
Here you go:
usage Since some people take sense 2 to be the opposite of sense 1, it has been frequently criticized as a misuse. Instead, the use is pure hyperbole intended to gain emphasis, but it often appears in contexts where no additional emphasis is necessary.
In my case, I felt compelled to emphasize "you fly through it" and hence literally applies.
However, an English teacher I am not and heck if it matters in a discussion about a phone.

Stay away from the bumper. It only covers the edges and leaves the back exposed.

I read about OS 4 sucking on the 3G. I didn't think it was even available for the 3.
Me and Weeze both have the 3Gs. I haven't suffered any slowdown whatsoever. If anything, it's a lot faster. I use the home double click psuedo multitasking feature constantly. When I learned you can swipe the multitask bar and see all the stuff you have used all day, it made things even faster.
I don't have to dig through screens anymore!!! :)
Today I started putting my crap in folders.
Oh yeah, on the faster...
The camera is so much faster, it literally screams now. I'm happy of it because I send a lot of text pics to Lisa. Lots of little videos, too. The whole camera/video thing has improved dramatically.
I haven't even scratched the surface of allthe new stuff. When I get time, I'll watch some "new features" videos and get educated.
On the screen, I have an ipad. I believe it uses the same glass/resolution.
Even if it doesn't, it's insanely gorgeous HD. I'm looking forward to the OS 4 for the ipad, but it won't be nearly the upgrade it was for my 3Gs, unless they come up with more features.
If there's one thing I'll use, it'll be the ability to use Pandora while I'm reading or surfing. :tu

Another big difference from my 3 is the battery.
I have not charged it all since picking it up around lunch time yesterday.
Used it all afternoon into evening.
Left it on overnight.
Still have about 3/4 of the battery life.
I did have it connected for a while to the laptop while I restored by information and it did get a brief charge there but I still think this is quite good compared to what I had.

I was able to get it to budge one bar here in my office today; but that's it. Still no dropped calls or poor reception. Still loving the damned thing. Off the charger since 6:30 this morning and I'm sitting at 62%. I think it'll last until bedtime tonight pretty easily.

Stood in line for 20 minutes this morning, glad I didn't waste hours in line yesterday! Loving this phone, of course my productivity at work today dropped to practically nil.
No yellowing of the screen. No reduced signal when holding it, no matter how hard I try. I have seen some reports of broken phones though, so be careful and buy a case. I'm avoiding the Apple "Bumper" case, $29 for a piece of molded rubber that probably costs $.25 to make?? Crazy, plenty of aftermarket options headed our way.

Dokk, there's a link on page about colors.
Wanna bet the next rev is funky colors? It makes sense. Makes the design change make a lot of sense, too. Since the hardware is so far ahead of the curve, there's plenty of time to add colors and an OS update.

I don't think they'll do it. Apple's move in recent years has been *away* from bright, flashy things and *toward* minimalist, industrial design. They did the flashy colors years ago with the iMac ... and then they stopped. Their push has been to do a few things and do them well -- don't overwhelm the consumers with too many choices at the top level; just offer a few models make them well.
I was surprised, honestly, to see so many options with the bumpers since they've basically left the colorful accessory market up to 3rd parties.
Anyway, I could be wrong about all that. Based on everything I've seen, though (recently and going all the way back to Steve Jobs's return to the company), I can't see them going beyond black, white, and metal (aluminum and stainless steel, for the time being).
:2
PS, and I think there's going to be an iOS 4.0.1 update on Monday or Tuesday at the latest, which will fix the antenna and possibly the proximity sensor sensitivity (I face-dialed someone yesterday when the phone angled away from my ear). Appleinsider has a story about the software fix: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/06/25/death_grip_hysteria_may_end_monday_with_ios_4_01.h tml

You oughta see the ipods, Dokk. The innovation has really slipped since they added umpteen colors. They even make special colors for special causes.
Apple cycles. Right now they have all their minds on the ipad and the iphone 4. Now that they're loosed up, I expect they'll roll out tons of these ideas in ipod. Ipod touch is due for an update, too. Facetime and OS 4.0 will be huge on the touch. It'd sell a billion units. Any kid worth their salt has a touch, and if they aren't carrying one, they want one.
At second thought, Facetime might be a little scary with ipod touch with all the issues about kids getting sexy over broadband. It'd probably meet a lot of controversy, so they may stay away from camera-ing up the touch. Jobs has been in love with colors since the Mac. I think he likes colors even more cause Gates made foolish of him for it. He said something like "So Purple is an innovation in computing?"
iPhone is so hot right now that I can't see colors real soon, but I'd bet on it for the next rollout. The design allows for it now, it didn't before. Even if it doesn't happen, it's had to be on their minds when they went with the like front and back.
I'd totally rock a dark red 4Gs. :D

Since then, I have used it non stop.
I just charged it for the 3rd time since getting it.
This new battery is amazing!!!
On a funny note, my 3 yr old grandson, who always plays with my iPhone, immediately notices I have a new one and was handing him the old one to play with.
He repeatedly insisted on seeing the new one and I kept telling him they were both the same. Eventually, I gave in. The moment he turned it on, I swear his response was "Wow". His eyes lit up and immediately told me, I really like this new iPhone. He went on to repeat it over and over.
Moral of that story.......................even a 3 year old can figure out the new iPhone rocks!!!

Being in the insurance claims business for over 28 years, I honestly would not recommend this.
Your phone is something you can easily lose or damage. Once this happens, you file a claim. Claims can cause your renter's policy to be cancelled if occur within certain time frames of their underwriting guidelines of frequency guidelines or type of loss guidelines.
Next thing you know, you are being dropped and shopping for new insurance.
Use your renter's or homeowner's insurance for what it was intended for and get a policy for your phone elsewhere.
Take it from a wise old man in this business.

You got the old part right! ;)
I didn't even try my homeowners insurance for that reason. I went with Squaretrade because they have the best reviews and reputation. Had a coupon and spent about $85 per phone for 2 years of full coverage ($50 deductible for accidental damage, $0 for warranty type repair -- both with free overnight to and from the repair center).

With all the alleged reception problems and the only "worthy" case to keep the minimalistic look of the Iphone 4 intact requiring a huge logo up the side at the moment, I am currently very content with my Iphone 3 in the Otterbox, but you guys enjoy your new toys.
With all the press about the reception problems and needing to have to hold the phone a certain way, inflated or not, you can be sure Apple is looking at a redesigned model.

Even with the reported issues and all of the competition from the Droid platforms, I still would prefer an iPhone, and looking forward to getting one. My wife has had hers for a year and a half with minimal complaints (mainly download and upload slow speeds inside places, like inside the Metrodome). Had a nice little surprise today. Hooked up the new iPhone to sync and get a nasty little message saying "iphone not compatible with this OSX version. Needs 10.5.8 to work". Was kind of pissed because it works on every version of windows but Apple is screwing their own people. I can't upgrade to 10.5.8 because it requires and intel processor and I'm running 10.4.11 on the last PPC they made before they switched over to the intel chips. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that it wouldn't be compatible with my computer. Oh well.....was able to activate it with Katie's computer, I just wont' be able to put any music on it until we buy that new desktop we've been eyeing. It sure is, as is XM radio and Pandora. Here's a frame of reference for you: I had a customer who used XM radio at his desk to the tune of 40hrs a week. Comes out to about 7-8GB of data a month. For those with unlimited, no sweat. For those without, as was said earlier, go with WiFi. Actually a surprising number of apps use data. The iPhone is a data HOG.

I was pretty sure that 10.5 (Leopard) does work with PPC processors, it's 10.6 (Snow Leopard) that is Intel only...
Mac OS X v10.5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Leopard) "Leopard" was released on October 26, 2007. It was called by Apple "the largest update of Mac OS X". It brought more than 300 new features.[86] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#cite_note-85) Leopard supports both PowerPC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC)- and Intel x86 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86)-based Macintosh computers; support for the G3 processor was dropped and the G4 processor required a minimum clock rate of 867 MHz, and at least 512 MB of RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random-access_memory) to be installed. The single DVD works for all supported Macs (including 64-bit machines). New features include a new look, an updated Finder, Time Machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Machine_%28Apple_software%29), Spaces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaces_%28software%29), Boot Camp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp_%28software%29)[87] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#cite_note-bootcamp-86) full support for 64-bit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit) applications (including graphical applications), new features in Mail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_%28application%29) and iChat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IChat), and a number of new security features. Leopard is an Open Brand UNIX 03 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_UNIX_Specification) registered product on the Intel platform. It was also the first BSD-based (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution) OS to receive UNIX 03 certification.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#cite_note-leopard_unix_cert-2)[88] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#cite_note-87) Leopard dropped support for the Classic Environment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Environment) and all Classic applications.[89] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#cite_note-88) pre-installed,
It was the final version of Mac OS X to support the PowerPC architecture.

Just know this, some cases eff up the flash. For example, the Griffen Reveal (black sides, clear back with cutouts for the flash and lens) refracts the light in such a way that it washes out every picture using the flash.

Good call Dokk. I went with a skin from ZAGG. It keeps the profile slim, lasts a long time and all the cutouts are perfect. Had one on my last iPhone and lived it. Just my double penny worth of insight.
Ya. I'm using an Apple bumper (it keeps the sexy lines intact and offers a little protection) and am waiting on my Best Skins Ever skin to get here (should be today or Monday).
If someone did get a case with a clear back (there are a couple out there), you can fix the flash washout issue by coloring in the edges of the cutouts (for the flash and the camera) with a black Sharpie marker.

I like it a lot. It goes on pretty easy (even if it's a little nerve-wracking getting soapy water on your iPhone) and feels nice. It's not as smooth as the glass; but your finger slides over it real well. I actually think I like the slight texture on the back *more* than the smooth glass.
I ordered 2 -- one for my phone and one for my wife's. The first one I put on the front of mine, though, had a scratch on the underside. I took it off and put on my wife's (she's not home until Wednesday, anyway). I've contacted support and have no doubt that they will respond quickly with a new front skin (all reports are that they have great service).
Anyway ... second one looks stellar. I expect it all to look perfect after everything has had a chance to settle. For $8 and minimal shipping (it was $1 first class for the 2 I ordered), you really can't beat these skins.
I believe I remember reading that King James would agree 100%. ;)

I have 10.5.8 on my Mac G4 ppc (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_server_g4/stats/macserver_g4_800_dp_qs.html) with no issues.
Yeah my bad...I was thinking of Snow Leopard. I probably will not put leopard on this laptop. Only running a 512 stick of ram and thats the bare minimum for Leopard and I don't want to bog the whole thing down.
So....I just went out and bought a new iMac lol

Nope. Just be sure to wait a while (maybe 24 hours) before putting a case on. I waited 12 and it seems to work fine; but their recommendation is 24 before you use it. I think 24 is a bit long in this day and age; so my personal recommendation is to do it in the evening and let it sit overnight while you sleep. By the time you're ready to leave the next day, it should be fine. Be sure to print out their directions on the website and just follow them. :)

I'm with you on this. Really impressed with the phone so far. However, the way I hold it when surfing the net is with the bottom in my right hand, held horizontally and it seems to block the signal then. That's the only time I noticed it and really, I can't isn't just the crappy service in downtown Chicago as it doesn't always decrease the signal, so I'm not sure if my hand is actually doing it. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is not planning on issuing an iPhone 4 recall at tomorrow's press conference.
Apple's iPhone 4 has been dogged by reports of antenna-reception problems since its launch last month. The company has called a news conference to discuss the issue Friday. Apple doesn't plan to recall the phone, a person familar with the matter said.

I have a real hard time believe that the whole dropped call debate is due to the formula used to determine how many bars of signal strength are displayed.
It's a hardware design flaw, there's no question about that. All the revised calculation formula will do it let you know a more accurately what signal level you have so it doesn't look like you have full signal just before it cacks out on you because you touched the antennae.
This is a major mistake for Apple, but ultimately it doesn't affect anyone that isn't trying to use the phone without a case. If the iPhone 4 is like all the others the first thing most people will do it start looking for a case to protect their nice shiny new toy.

It's a hardware design flaw, there's no question about that.
Maybe not. Report this morning from MacRumors.
Despite the fact that today's release of iOS 4.0.1 addressed only the display of signal strength on the iPhone and not actual signal attenuation issues caused by touching the antenna in the side of the iPhone 4, a software fix may yet still be possible.
According to The New York Times, the signal attenuation issue is the result of an interaction between communication software within the device's operating system and the antenna, an issue that could presumably be addressed with a software update.
One person with direct knowledge of the phone's design said Thursday that the iPhone 4 exposed a longstanding weakness in the basic communications software inside Apple's phones and that the reception problems were not caused by an isolated hardware flaw.
Instead, the problems emerged in the complex interaction between specialized communications software and the antenna, said the person, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter.
The source also indicates that Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not learn of the signal issue until after the iPhone 4 began shipping, seemingly refuting a report from Bloomberg earlier today claiming that Jobs had been tipped off early in the design process that the antenna design could cause a problem.
The person said the problems were longstanding but had been exposed by the design of the iPhone 4. All cellphones can be affected by the way a hand grips the phone, but well-designed communications software compensates for a variety of external factors and prevents calls from dropping, the person said.
The issue is reportedly unrelated to the signal display issue already addressed by Apple in iOS 4.0.1.
If the source's claims are true, the information could shed some light on recent comments made by Jobs in an email to a customer claiming that the "facts are different" than has been portrayed by blogs and the media, which have positioned the issue as a hardware problem possibly necessitating a recall.
Apple has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow at 10:00 AM Pacific Time to address the iPhone 4, and the company is widely expected to discuss the signal issues. Sources indicated earlier today, however, that Apple is not planning a recall of the device.
mithrilG60
07-16-2010, 08:46 AM
I saw that too, the reality is that Apple has instructed the factory which makes the iPhone to install an internal device to better insulate the antennae from bridging interference (ie. your finger/hand touching two antennae's at once). Combine that with the fact that installing a bumper (ie. physically preventing your finger/hand from touching two antennae's at once) also solves the reception issue completely and it's plainly obvious that the fundamental issue is a flaw hardware design and a failure in Apple's hardware QA/QC process.
They may be able to mitigate the severity of the problem via software tweaks, but the core issue is still the hardware itself and no amount of publicity from Apple or it's fanboi horde (not saying you're one of them) will change that. Proof yet again that being an early adopter has it's perils.....

Erick,
If you use a bumper or a case of some type, no issues.
I like the use of a case on mine.
I have the Belkin which is a very soft and flexible case and it works very well to not only protect the phone but also maintain the streamline of it and it does not bulk up the phone as other cases have with the 3 series.
So for me, the issue is there is no issue.
I downloaded the new update that corrects the bars and drove around town this morning with all full bars. Only place I have seen a drop of one is in my home. However, all calls are as normal. Have not lost one today at all.
Again, I guess I am truly lucky.

As true as this may be, I think it comes down to principle. One would think that it should work fine without a case if one chooses not to use one if it was engineered correctly to begin with. The fact is that it does not work fine without a case (for many) which means there is either a software or hardware flaw, or both. A bumper case is really not a fix, but rather just a band-aid covering the actual production flaw. I believe this is what pissed many folks off the most.

Most of them. People generally buy accessories like this with the phone, and Apple's numbers show that only 20% of uses bought a case with the iPhone4. If you have to buy a case separately to make a device work correctly, there's a problem.
The press conference was kind of funny, Jobs kept saying that every other smart phone has the same issue, but none of them have the problem with the exposed antennas like the iPhone 4. Apple and oranges.

What can I say.
The company says you can have your money back if that is what you want.
If not, it will give you a bumper free. Now granted, while only around 20% bought the bumper with the phone, I can personally attest that was attributed to lack of supply. They ran out of them and folks were asking for it but not available. Had they been available, I assure you the number would have been significant that bought it. If you use a case like me, no issues.
Over 1.5 million units and to date, 15,000 complaints.
1,500,000 minus 15,000 means there are 1,485,000 non complainers, which translates to less than 1% of all users.

Most of them. People generally buy accessories like this with the phone, and Apple's numbers show that only 20% of uses bought a case with the iPhone4.
I'd dispute that, you can't equate the number of cases sold at the time of the phone purchase to anything other than the number of case sold at the time of the phone purchase. That's especially true with a new device that is only just now starting to get very limited support from 3rd party case makers. My own anecdotal evidence (ie. what I see every day with my own 2 eyes) tells me that at least 70 - 80% of the previous gen iPhone's end up wearing cases of some kind. I see absolutely no reason why that would be any different for the iPhone4 given that it's got twice the breakable glass surface of the previous models.
If you have to buy a case separately to make a device work correctly, there's a problem.
Completely agree and Apple should be taking steps to address the real issue instead of offering a band-aid. That said, given that most people do end up putting cases on their phones does it really matter? Beyond the moral/ethical aspect, not really.

What the heck do you mean?
They recognize the issue.
They are offering refunds if you are not pleased with the solution at this time.
They will offer you a refund if you bought a bumper.
They will offer you a free bumper if you want one.
Does anyone seriously believe they will not fix this problem eventually and are not already addressing it on new devices to be made?
In the interim, it is what it is. There is a flaw for some users. Not a flaw at all for many others, such as me.
I personally feel what Apple did today is responsible for a corporation to do when something has gone wrong. They stepped up to the plate. I don't know what more, short of a BJ, we can ask for at this point, and frankly, Steve Jobs wouldn't be the person I would want doing that.

What do I mean? It's pretty simple, they've produced and sold a product that has an inherent hardware defect that significantly impairs the one of the primarily functions of the device (ie. Cellular voice and data transmission). While offering a bumper is great, it's just a bandaid solution that doesn't actually resolve the problem because it doesn't solve the hardware flaw in the millions of iPhone4's that have already left the factory.
Quite frankly they should have offered to replace the defective phones as upgraded hardware spec become available and offered the free bumpers as a interim stop gap to allow the affected customers to continue using the defective phones until the replacements are available. Afterall, it's not like this is a minor defect that only affects a non-essential function of the device. The ability to send and receive data is rather core to the purpose of this device.

Nope, just a unit that works as advertised and promoted. Just look at it this way, if Dell/HP/Acer/etc sold a laptop model that had a defective wireless nic that lost signal when you touched the laptop case.... would you be happy with a cover that prevented you from touching the case or would you expect the laptop to be replaced with updated hardware that wasn't defective? The iPhone4 and Apple are no different and don't get different rules just because it's an iPhone made by Apple.

I just think there is a big difference between what you call a 'defect' and what is truly a 'design' that you don't agree with. The fact that you can return it for a full refund is enough, such that you can go get one that has a design that you prefer.
If a small percentage (<1%) of people experienced the laptop issue you describe, and millions more did not experience it, would you demand that Dell/HP/Acer design a new one that met your expectations? What if you demanded a new design, and Apple simply designed a new piece of hardware that has a 'bumper' built in (similar to ALL other smart phones on the market), would that be deferent enough than putting a bumper on it yourself?
I understand that if you bought something that ends up being different than you expected, based on their advertising, then you should be able to return it. You can do that.

There is a big difference between producing a design which some people don't like, and personally I quite like the design of the new iPhone, and a design which has a serious and intrinsic flaw at the hardware level. The new iPhone is the latter.

I know 6 friends who personally own an iPhone 4 (including my wife), probably 2 dozen friends online (from iphone apps, games, etc), 3-4 customers at work, and the 3 employees working at Best Buy Mobile yesterday when I went to purchase the wife's iPhone 4.
I've asked every single one of these people since the release of the iPhone 4 if they have had any problems making phone calls or notice bad signal strength when on the phone. Know how many people said yes? ZERO
And do you know why? Because all of the people running around complaining about how bad the phone is online and in real life, DON'T OWN THE iPHONE 4!!! Seriously! Listen to someone rant about this antenna problem with the phone, and then ask if they personally own one and if they are speaking from first-hand experience. I'd bet ya a fiver that 9/10 would say no.
If this was a huge problem across the board I think we would all be pretty pissed off that we spent $200-$700 on a phone that can't make calls! I am perfectly happy with Apple's decision today, my wife will get a free phone cover and her phone will CONTINUE to work just fine, like it did today and the day before.

Care to explain exactly how expecting Apple to replace defective units with upgraded hardware as it becomes available instead taking the attitude of "either accept this band-aid for our defective hardware or return it and bugger off" is like wanting a refund and a pony too? I hate to break it to you but that's effectively what Steve Jobs announced today and it was a very arrogant attitude to take towards his customers. Apple dropped the ball on this device, period. While it's great that they're taking some measures to offer a solution to those customers who are affected by it, the real solution is to offer to replace the defective hardware.
That's what any reputable company that cares about keeping it's customers does. Offering a full refund instead of charging a restocking fee just let's people return your product. The people that take advantage of that offer are lost customers.... because they are highly unlikely to re-buy another iPhone on Jobs' announcement that the hardware problem has been "fixed". Seriously, I enjoy my iPhone 3Gs and think it's a great device and all but the whole "Apple mentality" of blindly accepting whatever His Jobs-ness throws out there just confounds me.

Well, personally, I don't expect Apple to release new hardware anytime soon. Again, I don't think this is a 'defect', so I don't expect there to be anything to replace it with (at least in the near term).
This has absolutely nothing to do with "Apple mentality" for me. Just because I think this is a tempest in a teapot doesn't mean it's 'blindly accepting' anything at all. It has nothing to do with a specific attitude toward Apple. My blackberry has similar behavior, but I also don't think they should be giving me a new one.
People think there are only "Apple Fanboys" and "Apple Haters" in the world. I suspect you'd find that most people are far less passionate about the company, and simply enjoy the nice products (or not), but they don't spend their time posting on message boards about it. Don't think for a minute that all the fanboys and haters on the internet are representative of the larger population (you know, that 99% of people who aren't complaining about this :))
Let me guess, you don't even have an iPhone 4, do you?

And so does the "Apple is the devil, they can't ever do anything right" mentality.
Your phone is defective? Take it back, get a refund. When new hardware comes out, go buy it. Jobs can't replace a phone today, there is nothing to replace it with.

My iPhone has the issue. I have dropped calls because of it. Mostly it just causes bad reception when talking on the phone normally (digitalized voice), but if I am using headphones, it likes to drop the calls do to the way I hold it. I can get it to go from 5 bars to one on demand.
There, now you all know someone with the problem.

My wife and I got our new iPhones the day they came out. I have not had ANY issues at all with reception or dropped calls since having the phone. I use it heavily on a daily basis. My wife's phone had issues with reception however. Naturally she holds her phone by the bottom whereas I hold mine by the side.
We were both planning on getting cases for our phones anyway so as soon as we got her a case (pink no less) her issues went away. Problem solved, for us at least.
Is it a glaring design flaw? Yes. Is it a problem for 99% of the phone population? I don't think so. Is Apple doing everything it can to fix the issue? No, but what they are doing is a step in the right direction.
It really isn't a big deal to me at all. The advances of what the 4 can do over my previous 3GS FAR outweigh this issue.

And use what? I already sold my 3GS and am under contract until almost 2012 even if I return the 4. I'm going to wait and see. I'll try a case, and when they have sorted the issue out, I'll swap it for a refurb. Swaping it now wouldn't make sense because it'd just have the same issues.

Seriously, I still think the bottom line is that it's a great phone, but it isn't perfect. Whether that qualifies as "defective" or not is what I think is overblown. I doubt there will be lines out the door with people seeking refunds; in fact, there's still a 3 week wait just to get one.

Paul, They still have brand new 3Gs's. I know that's a suck step backward, but if the problem is getting under your skin, it might be worthwhile.
A cover has worked for everyone I talked to. Just a silicone skin is supposed to do the trick. That's a cheap get around.
If I ever switch to the 4.0, I'll have an otterbox for it. I've had one on my 3GS since day one and when I take it out it's impossible to tell it from brand new. It's taken lots of good bounces, too.

Well, I'll have a cover when one I like comes out. I'm waiting on otterbox unless I see something else I like. I wouldn't be able to go back to the 3GS without 1) having less capacity than I started with and 2) extended my contract the same amount as the 4 did. I probably don't have to say why that is unacceptable.
Don't get me wrong, overall I love the phone. I expected a few bugs from getting it this early, but the first job of a smartphone is to be a phone, so it sucks the bug affects that.

Let me guess, you don't even have an iPhone 4, do you?
No, as mentioned above I have a 3Gs. I actually fall into the category you're talking about, I buy and use whatever tool happens to be the best for the job. Be that phone, OS, computer platform, whatever. I choose to give up a BB which my company paid for to move to a iPhone 3Gs which I pay for instead simply because it was a much better phone.
To deny that there is a hardware defect causing the reception issue with the iPhone4 is simply ignoring all the evidence presented from a large number of different sources. First it was a software problem, now it's a hardware problem that can be solved by a rubber band. Just in saying that is an implicit admission from Apple that there is a design defect that affects signal quality.
The issue for me has nothing to do with the phone itself, it's with the corporate attitude towards how Apple intends to deal with the problem. They don't need to work to sell their products to the people that line up around the block waiting for the AppleStore to open on launch day, or the people that will sit and hit refresh constantly to get on the pre-sale list. They do have to work to sell to people like me that base their purchase decisions on: a) the quality of the product, b) how well the company supports their product. The later includes taking the steps to make it right when there's a problem. Refusing to replace defective hardware and effectively saying "put a bandaid on it or give it back" is not taking the right steps...... and it will turn a large number of people off the company and it's products.
I love my 3Gs, there's not a chance in hell that I'll upgrade to a 4.... not because there may or may not be a reception issue in the unit I'd get, but because I have zero confidence that Apple would fix a problem of their own making if such a problem occurred. As a business you live and die by the reputation you build for customer service, someone should remind Apple of that fact.

I own the 3 and can't comment on the 4's alleged reception problem other than to say that everyone I know that has the 4 loves it and isn't complaining about reception problems. Just the same, I'm cool with the 3 for now. Loved it when I got it, still do.
My phone is used a great deal for work and if the reception problem affected me and I was in the 1% complainer club, it could potentially cost me a great deal of business which would negate all the benefits of a sexy design with video conferencing and blazing fast speeds making Superman seem like a snail.

Scott,
The irony is that the first time those folks that don't like the idea of a bumper drop their phone, they will be grateful the bumper was on, specially if one is anal about scratchers as I am.
My son is in NC this week and I shipped his to him via Fed Ex. He spent the whole night trying to replicate the reception problem with no skin and did not have any, so I guess it is just not us South Floridians that are fortunate.
Seems it is in certain markets. On the radio yesterday, they had a bunch of South Floridians call in with no issues while some in Manhattan called with many.

As usual, Blueface is right on with his comment. Also, the iPhone's issue just happens to be in such a place that is making people drop calls depending on how they hold it.
Anyway, my bestskinsever skin has all but solved my issue. I can still get it to drop one bar, but the big drop is a lot harder to make happen now. It's really funny how sensitive that antenna is.

That will *only* be the case if it's on a different network ... and honestly, I'm not sure they have the time to do it because a new phone would have to be on shelves by the end of October to be in time for the holiday season. AT&T folks won't see a new phone until next June -- anything sooner would be admitting a bigger problem than they're willing to admit. As for September 30th, it's either a semi-arbitrary date (i.e., let's give customers 90 days to make up their minds) or it has something to do with these T-Mobile rumors. I think it's the former rather than the latter.
