View Full Version : COFFEE: What are you drinking?
From the freezer, Ethiopia Idido Misty Valley. Roasted 2 days ago to city+, drip, splash. I was excited, the aroma was good, hints of the bluberry I love. Sadly, the cup was lacking, faint blueberry as the cup cooled.
2nd pot, El Salvador Santa Josefita, roasted 2 days ago to FC, drip, splash. Very good, different, smooth, kinda fruity.
IMV with 3 days rest has better flavor and still the great aromas.

My local roaster has been experimenting again. Normally he does this bean to French roast. It's usually the brewed dark roast choice at his coffee shop and I enjoy it that way and have gone through a couple pound of it at home. But Thursday he did this as an American roast and I picked some up this morning.
The American roast is still full bodied and earthy but the lighter roast has a bit of fruit fragrance that's lost in the darker roast. Not citrusy IMO and nothing like the powerful blueberry you get from the great sidamo but still a definite fruit hint.

Hard to say. Where were they roasted? When were they roasted? What are they? Oil is normal, it seeps outa the beans after they have been roasted, or during, depending on how dark you roast them. Also, different ways of roasting will produce more or less of the oil. Air roasting=less

Once you hit a dark Vienna or Darker (French) the natural oils will come to the surface of the bean. If they are not that old, they are probably fine.

I've been drinking Costa Rican 1820 coffee for over a year now. The wife and I have been traveling there for a couple of years and LOVE this coffee. On our first trip I asked the locals what the best coffee was and they said 1820. Cafe Britt is supposedly the gourmet coffee of Costa Rica, all of the restaurants and hotels serve it but IMO 1820 is better and a lot cheaper. I have been having it shipped from CR for the last year 10-20 lbs. at a time.

The Yemen Mokha Sana'nai, with 72 hours rest, I'm a little disappointed.
The first batch I roasted came out very good w/ about 3 days rest. The second batch, I must not have been able to duplicate the same roast because it came out just pretty good. I am having a cup right now as I write.
Those were some of the ugliest beans I have seen to date. I had to throw out about 10% of them before roasting because of bad quality. They also seemed to be picked at different ripenesses because the beans roast up very uneven. Some are hitting Vienna/French while others are barely hitting City +. The green beans (if you can call them that) are all different shades of yellow to green.
I think it was just a poor quality batch, IMO.

Cafe 1820 that I buy is ground or you can buy in whole bean. I am not a connoisseur of fine coffee..just someone that really enjoys a good cup of coffee. I was told that most of all the coffee produced in Costa Rica is actually exported as gourmet coffees and just a small portion is actually sold in CR. Cafe Britt is "considered" to be the best coffee sold in CR but is fairly expensive. The locals seem to drink 1820 because it is a lot cheaper but IMO, 1820 is actually better than Britt.

Sweet Marias. I like SM because of the reviews and rating system. It helps a ton. I think his ratings are very accurate. The problem is...I have been spoiled by some really great beans over the years and just haven't had anything lately that floats my boat.

After a few days rest (the beans, not me) yesterday I had some Kenya Kirinyaga AA Kabingara at Full City+. Man, what a great roast. Deep flavors with a bit of spice and coco. And just the right amount of citrus on the tongue.
Right now, having my India Monsooned Malabar AA Vienna Roast. Another very nice bean. Very different in look and taste. These beans start out almost white, they are so pale.
Very unique flavors also. Smokey, w/ a lite amount of baking spice and citrus.

I was recently at a casino in NY and had the best cup of coffee ever in one of the casino restaurant. When I asked the waitress what brand it was, she said people ask her that all the time, however she was unsure how to pronounce it. She failed at explaining the container to me as well. She said it comes in a bag that attaches to the machine thingy? I had her go write the name of it down, I will try to supply that name when/if I can find it.
I am at work now and the napkin with the name should be somewhere at home.
Another note I have a friend that order his beens green. he roasts them with a bar-b-que grill roaster attachment ($500) and packages them for a charity.
If he was interested in more business I would include more info, needless to say the coffee is great. If any of you have ever thought about roasting your own beans, do it! He sells it to me at $10/pound.
At home I have a Kuerig brewer and try many different brands and flavors of coffee.
