About $2 a qt. at Whole foods. Can't imagine the coup would be for much and yeah, I don't like giving out my info to anybody. Thanks for the thought, though.

Drinking the Espresso Workshop #21 -The Satpura Fold that I roasted on Sunday night. I see what they mean about the brightness. I roasted it to Full City and to what I think was the verge of 2nd crack, but can't really be sure since I didn't really hear it start 2nd crack. It's pretty decent, but I may try and go slightly farther next round.

It's certainly not the same as an actual espresso machine, but close enough for me.

The reason I got all the blends is because I ordered 2 4 bag samplers. One was espresso and the other single origin. So far, I've enjoyed the gneiss the most of the blends.

Just had a cup of the Mexican Chiapas I roasted yesterday. Very nice cup. Light body, which surprisingly held up well to my breakfast of a spicy lamb fritta. Actually had some flavors of cinnamon come out as I ate the fritta. Not a flavor associated with this bean, but I"m guessing it was due to the mix with the lamb/spices.

Now onto a cup of the Burundi I roasted yesterday. So far nothing that interesting. Will see as it cools.

Can't wait to try these tomorrow to see how well the extra day of rest does for them.

Burundi from the Gacokwe cooperative. American roast. A great balance of acid and sweet. A unique profile IMO. Don't know why it's so outstanding but I've been drinking it for a couple weeks now and I think my local has enough for a couple more batches so I'll be getting more. I didn't think it was possible but this stuff has pulled me away from the current crop of Ethiopia Harar Oromia which IMO is the nicest Ethiopian I've had since a sidamo a few years ago that made my whole house smell like blueberries.

Some El Salvador from a local roaster. Question, can the roasting flavor intensify the longer the beans sit? I've had this batch for about a month. Maybe it's because I've been drinking the lighter roasts I've made, but this ES tastes over roasted. Never noticed it before when fresh.

Interesting question. I NEVER keep coffee this long. It makes sense though. As coffee gets older, the varietal characteristics diminish. I don't know that roast flavors would intesify, but seems like they would certainly dominate.

One question and I think I know the answer. What makes a cup of coffee have a "chalky" mouthfeel? Is it just the newness of the roast? I got that from this cup and happened to be on SM's site last night and saw that referred to for a different bean. Figured it would appy here.

CounterCulture's El Gavilan as a pourover or press; Toscano as an espresso. The Gavilan is nice and clean, with light, pure flavors, and is excellent iced. The Toscano is a lovely sweet Snickers bar of caramel, nuts and chocolate, good in milk or as a straight shot. Both very nice with a cigar.

Nope. What is it? Just cold water instead of hot?

Basically you brew coffee with time instead of heat. It takes anywhere from 12-24 hours at room temperature to steep. You steep the ground coffee with room temperature water. There are many different techniques and recipes, but the one I am trying is after the steep you filter and mix with water (or milk) 1:1, pour over ice and enjoy. This is reported to be the only way to make amazing iced coffee. I have some steeping now, I will update tomorrow!

Nice clean 5 gallon bucket. I use 1 pound of coffee, 1 and 1/2 gal water, let it steep overnight. Strain thru a gold filter. Keep in the fridge, in a gal jug. I don't work real hard to get all the liquid out of the grounds. Too much work and sediment. There are those that say, a second filtration, thru paper makes this a better cup, but I don't have the patience to wait. It takes FOREVER to filter that much coffee thru paper.

The PBR of Coffee for me: Dunkin Donuts. $6 a pound for whole bean fresh from the roasters aint a bad deal in my book and I just don't want to move into roasting my own.

Oh how two years can change things. My crappy grinder and drip machine are replaced by quality gear, and DD coffee is now 8-9 dollars a pound. Now that's ridiculous enough I started going to the available roasters.

Everyone of them around here runs 11-12 dollars a pound and it is SOOOO much better.

Close is relative Mark, Serious is 60 miles from my house. But ya there are several local roasters that put out outstanding product, IMO. And most have good websites etc. Houston is actually one of the large hubs for the coffee trade in the world. There are several Free Trade Zone coffee warehouses here. I'm sure that helps the local roasters to try out new things. If it wasn't so hot here the coffee scene would be nuts. As it is it's as developed as the Pacific Northwest area.

This is another one of our favorite roasters here: http://katzcoffee.com/store.php

I agree. Roasting for myself was fine, but I like to give it away too, plus a few of my neighbors will buy it "by the pound" from me and it just takes too darn long. Just to roast the coffee for myself and my neighbor for 1 week, I would be out there for 3+ hours.

Another cup of Jose's vanilla nut.. I don't have much time to roast my own, or I'd think about it. I have to say, for the price, the Jose's brands of coffee have never let me down!

I had the last of a batch of SM's Monkey Blend this morning. Makes a pretty decent regular cup. Roasted off half a lb of Burundi that'll get sampled tomorrow.

Nothing fancy. I've been on a Cafe Bustelo kick for the last couple of months. Stuff taste great through a 1 cup Melita or packed in to an Espresso maker. And, its only $3.68 or $3.78 at one of the big box stores...

Ethiopian coffees for me always need about 36 hours of rest before they start tasting good.

I was blown away by an Ethiopian coffee, a couple weeks back, that was about 4 hours out of the roaster :jd Started doing 12 hour rests.
I hope this comes around, actually, it's starting to already. I'm just not much of a city-city+ guy. I like it FC-FC+.

The Aricha, with 36 hours, drip, Silk. Ultra smooth, mild, some sweetness, good cup, but....I did roast this way too light. Thinking maybe I'll roast up a strong flavored Sumatra and blend. Then I would have 6 days worth though :sad

Ya, thats part of it. They seemed a little more sweet in the past, as well as a little more like Baking Spices and less earthy.
The 2-3 varieties this season were very earthy but not as "good-earthy" as last season. More "dirt taste" I guess.
Still good, but did not wow me.

I generally roast FC+ anyway and wanted to see how it would be going into French Roast territory. Looking a bit more into it, I may have hit Italian roast, so I will just toss it.
