Short answer, no, we can't get that one here in Radford. If there is a trip to Venezuela at Christmas, I'll smuggle you back one - I think we were 4-5 bottles over the limit last time, whats another bottle? :-O

I've got a bottle of the Santa Teresa, either got it here in MD or Florida, can't remember.
Nobody mentioned Pampero yet? That's another nice Venezuelan rum, should be pretty readily available too. I think it's similar to Zacapa, but not quite as sweet. I like it better. Ron del Barrilito 3 Star is one of my all-time favorite rums. I like the dry, lighter style of Puerto Rican rums, this is the best I've had so far. Rhum Agricole - Neisson, St James, La Favorite, Rhum Clement... all are great, and very different from every other rum you'll ever try. You owe it to yourself to pick one up if you come across it. El Dorado 15 yr - Great cigar rum, smokey, heavy, full-bodied, stands up well to a heavy smoke. Gosling's Black Seal - Cheap, available everywhere, delicious. Don't ever buy Meyer's Dark when Gosling's is sitting nearby. Angostura 1919 & 1824 - I'm really liking these both a lot lately. The 1824 is a little more complex, the 1919 screams 'vanilla', but both are the drier style that I tend to prefer. Pyrat XO - Not bad, but I have a hard time getting paste the citrusy/orange flavor. Almost seems too 'orangey' to be real. Great on ice though. 10 Cane - Only buy it on sale, but it makes a helluva mojito. Of the sweet rums, I think I like Diplomatico a touch more than Zacapa, though they're awful close. Can't ever find Zaya (any Zaya), or Centenario in MD. I'd love to get my hands on some HC, that's one that ain't exactly common around here. Maybe next trip overseas. Now that there's a rum thread, someone needs to invite Che over here ![]() |

Now, here's the dilemna. I tasted the Zaya, wanted to get some of my own. So, I've been looking for some Zaya & Ron Zacapa, but noplace nearby (within an hour drive) has them. I did find a bottle of the Pyrat XO for $26 so I snagged that and had some with an Oliva Connecticut Lonsdale today - very nice pairing. I kind of like the citrusy notes in this rum.

Zaya is a good everyday rum for me (beats the hell outta mosts)
Zappa 23 or Centenario XX for special events/herfs/when I feel like something better (none of above as mixers, straight up only)

OK, I have done many wines - am no expert, but no neophyte.
Like my Single Malts Scotch and Irish Whiskey - know what I can afford, and know what I like. Plenty of decent small batch Bourbans out there. Enjoy a good Cognac &/or Aragnac. Never thought of rums as anything other than a mixer. Usually bought the cheap ones, since when you mix it, you can't really taste the nuances anyway. Now, I have been exposed to good rums - sipping rums -- and have a few questions. Why do the really good Whiskeys run $50 and more, and the great rums start at about $25 and you can get award winners for $35 or less? Is it just me, or do good rums taste best warmer, like a Cognac? Peace of the Lord be with you.

I'm partial to a more 'dry' style usually (Ron del Barrilito is my favorite), and I think they benefit from being slightly chilled, just a small ice chip or two. I figure it's using cold to help smooth out the alcohol instead of sugar. I've heard others say that a few drops of water can 'open up' a glass of rum, but I haven't noticed that. |

Is that the Trini Zaya or the Guatemala Zaya?
