Well it's a gorgeous (brand new) 16 gauge Fausti SxS field gun with 28" barrels. Serious pheasant and quail gun. Balance is awesome. Looks fine too....

Mostly because it was a private sale, no tax, etc. and the price was right, I picked up a Smith and Wesson SD40VE lately. If you're not familiar, think of it as an economy grade M&P. The trigger on the SD, as issued, is like driving a car without power steering. I may or may not do a little parts changing and polishing. Meanwhile, it's increasing the strength of my trigger finger on both hands. Weak-hand only drills are..challenging.

It will get smoother with use, but not lighter, nature of the beast. However, these guns are typically very reliable, and accurate enough for defense work or casual use. Since it fits holsters made for the M&P, it might even get carried on lousy weather days.

Always been a Colt guy and just recently decided to expand into the 10mm arena. Never had one, but have always wanted one. Of course I've looked to the Colt Delta Elite, but in doing some research learned about the Sig Sauer P220 Elite in 10mm. Intrigued with that gun in stainless and wondering if anyone here possibly has experience with that model or Sig's in general. Thanks. Steve

Well, finally jumped in and bought a SIG. I purchased a SIG P220 Stainless Elite in 10mm. Took delivery today although I of course haven't shot it yet. It's beautiful and I love the size, the heft. Fits perfectly in my hand and looking forward to shooting it. This was very hard to find. I posted on a Sig forum what I wanted and some guy referred me to a gun shop in PA. Do you hand load your own ammunition? With 10mm and other niche calibers like .38 super, the choices in factory ammo are relatively limited.

Steve

Actually, most of the major players produce 10mm. It's just a matter of if you can find it locally or if you have to order it, and whether you will need to take a second mortgage out to pay for it. Finding inexpensive "range" ammo is pretty much a no go though.

I really like my 10mm, it's a great hog gun in the woods. I have shot Sig, Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Hornady, and Federal out of mine with no issues. Some of the bulk stuff I have found has been spotty though.

Stevez
10-19-2016, 11:48 AM
Brian, no, I don't hand load today and have heard that about the 10 mm. I don't get out to shoot as often as I would like, so probably won't go that route. Thanks and I look forward to trying this baby out soon.

It is from a guy who does work on guns and has his FFL license.. He should be cheaper than stores here. It's a co-workers friend.

I want to shop locally to see what I am getting is a good deal.

I am assuming it is the Gen 4..

Brian D.
10-26-2016, 06:36 PM
That would be a good "street price" for a Gen4, I think they run about $530 or thereabouts, typically. The Gen3's still in the pipeline, around here at least, go about $490 unless on sale.

Flynnster
10-27-2016, 09:00 PM
Gen 4 comes with 3 mags total (2 extra) and standard white dot sights.

That sounds like a good price. Much better price if it has night sites on it too.

I think I picked mine up for a bit over that plus tax at my local shop, but that was two years ago now.

Took my new Sig P220 Stainless Elite in 10mm to the range today. Wow; I love this gun. It's very hefty and there was very little recoil. Tried all kinds of ammo including the big Buffalo Bore and the recoil was softer than my 1911's in 45 ACP. This gun was incredibly accurate and may be my new favorite. Jealous.....I've been looking at Glocks for a long time. Hard to justify the cost with all the other things I want to buy.....:r

You're in the fire service, right? I'm going on memory so excuse me if that's not the case. Anyhow, Glock has what's called their Blue Label program. Police fire EMS etc. eligible for special pricing.

Was at our local shop last week and they had someone trade in one of these sets on something newer. When I saw them I had to have them. Got the set of four put in their layaway. Pretty cool. They are made in 1967 or 8 WWI Commemoratives. (this is a general photo I found but not mine)

Picked up a twelve inch ar500 steel gong today and went shooting. We tried spinning it and shooting the back side when it was reversed. Good times and a good waste of ammo. :banger

Does anyone have a .22 lr conversion kit for their AR? I can't decide on a kit or just a new gun. I can get an M&P 15-22 for $350, so is it worth it to get a $250 kit or just a new gun. Any opinions?

I have a S&W E Series 1911 that I carry daily for the last 4 years. I bought a M&P Shield about a year ago in 40 S&W. I love it cause I can carry it even on my job with no one being the wiser. I also do Private Investigations on the side and work as armed security part time too. With the Florida G license I have to qualify once a year for every caliber I carry. I need to go soon and re-qualify for the 1911 and I have put off doing it with the 40. I am selling the 40 to a friend and buying a Shield in 45. Most say the 45 isn't any more felt recoil than the 40 and some say it's less. Anyhow it will save me about 70 bucks a year on not having to qualify with two guns. I would only have to qualify once with a 45. And I can do a smidgen better than Steves target than whoever shot that one with a 45. LOL

Havent looked at new guns in a while but im wanting another sub compact single stack 9mm to CCW. I gave my Kahr PM9 to the wife when she got her permit, so i want something similar for me. I like the Kimber micro or ultra carry, i have the midsize Kimber 1911, but find it tough to conceal. Also considering another Kahr and the M&P shield. Not a huge glock fan, never could get used to the grip and trigger on my 22 or 27. Open to just about anything else.

The session starts early in 2017 and if it passes the first session then it would go into effect July 1st I believe. The bills have already been filed. I believe they had the votes to pass it last year in the senate. It passed the house, but was held up in committee by a republican chair believe it or not. That senator lost his re-election to a democrat (probably thanks to a lot of conservatives voting for him to get rid of the republican) and a different republican that is very pro gun now chairs that committee.

I find the Kimbers to be a little difficult for concealed carry. Not a fan of Glock either. great reliability but natural aim point is way off for me. The M&P Shield is a good choice and one you may not have considered but I really like is the Taurus Curve

Thanks for explaining. In Ohio, bills from the previous two year session die if not passed, and the process must start all over. Most annoying to lose out that way. To make it worse, the first week or two of each new session is all about resolutions that do things like rename roads and bridges for recently dead politicians.

I am def not an expert on how it works in Florida by no means. I learned what I do know last year mostly from a forum I belong to and following open carry. The house and senate have various committees that any bill first has to pass a vote and pass all the committees before a full vote is taken. The Senator I mentioned refused to hear campus carry or open carry in the committee he chaired, effectively killing the bill. Which as you can imagine enraged gun rights people. He lost his re-election mainly (opinion) because of it.

I was able to try a sccy pistol before. My biggest complaint on the gun is the horrible trigger. The long trigger pull is very gritty and you can actually feel the plastic trigger flexing a bit during the long trigger pull. Best pistol in that size i have tried is the Kel tec PF9. Your friend should try the different pistols out if a range has them as rentals. Its the best way to know what he's comfortable with.

In my limited experience opinion you cannot go wrong with a shield. I bought the 40 a year ago, and just now sold it and bought the 45 shield. The reason I bought the 45 is the fact that for my Florida G license I have to qualify every year for every caliber I carry. With both of my pistols being 45 I only have to qualify once instead of twice and that in turn will save me at least 70 bucks a year. I love them. I carry it appendix most of the time and I have a Desantis Seperfly for pocket carry when I am wearing BDUs at a job.

I'd just get the S&W, mags are amazingly easy to load. I thought I read about some problems with the M&P-22 but can't recall. I just don't like the plastic lower though.

I had purchased a .22 dedicated upper from CMMG and I was using their mags. Magazines were a pain to load, just like loading 10/22 mags. I picked the ready-mag adapter https://www.redi-mag.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=52 and have been using S&W magazines. The S&W magazines have a thumb assist that makes the loading so much easier. Sometimes the last round bolt hold open doesn't work, that doesn't bother me much, but I do have one of the very early models that were made.

Can anyone recommend a discrete soft case for an M&P 15 Sport? I have looked at several that are rectangular and I would prefer to have some pockets inside that can hold mags and such. And I am hoping to get something that don't break me. I read the reviews on a lot of them and it seems the zippers are crappy and break very soon after folks get them. Thanks

Break down the rifle, grab a couple 20's and shove in your duffle bag. The Larue covert rifle case is nice too.

You have your ccw, no? Why not just carry on you? Just a few things to think about, Are you planning on leaving the rifle in your room, in basically an unsecured bag, where who knows how many people have access too? Are you planning on carrying it everywhere with you and leave it in a car that can be broken into anytime?

Yes I have a CCW, but you can't carry long guns on you in Florida unless they are concealed with a permit. You can open carry when you are doing a few things that are stipulated in the statute. No I wouldn't leave it in the room unsecured. Truth be told that was just an example, my wife and I hardly ever stay in a motel anyway. If you carry it in the car, IMO there is going to be times when you just have to leave it in the car. At least in Florida. I am intending to probably have it in the back floorboard of my car for access, and then if I have to leave it in the car then i would transfer to the trunk as long as everyone and their grandma couldn't see me doing it. I'm not sure how someone could carry a long gun in a vehicle when you are out and about and not EVER leave it in the car at some point. I know it's not optimum but unavoidable at some point. I mean the only other option is leave it at home, and that's not a guarantee that it won't be stolen there either. My home was broken into several years ago and two of my pistols were stolen.

The larue is the style I have been coming back to and there are several brands of the style.

I'm not trying to be a buzz kill with what you're doing, I know a lot of people that do the same thing you're planning on doing. Just bringing up food for thought.

I was referring to pistol when mentioned ccw. If you're going to travel with it or leave it in the car for when the doo doo goes down. Just leave it in the trunk, the less you fiddle with it the better off you are.

I have backpack that will fit a 20" ar broken down, can't seem to find any tags on it to see who made it. But my neighbor, leaving his house at the same time as me, commented "oh, you play pool?" Might want to look into a pool cue case. Not sure if it will hold up to the weight of an AR though.

No, I get what you are saying Greg. I realize that it's not optimal to leave it in the car, but I just don't see how I can get around it at times, and to me it's just as bad as leaving it at the house unless you have some kind of Fort Knox style place to lock it up. I carry my pistol daily and never leave the house without it. I only carried my 1911 because that's the only pistol I had for a while. Now I have a .45 Shield and carry it along with the 1911 most days because I don't like leaving it at home. If you're going to keep acquiring firearms--or just want to hang on to those you already have--invest in a safe. It's about as fun a way to spend money as buying insurance, because in fact that is precisely what you're doing. But unlike a paper policy, it doesn't expire or try not to pay a claim.

Most home burglars aren't going to try to do much with a safe, at least not in all but the ritziest neighborhoods. It takes skills and/or tools not commonly found with ordinary quick-grab thieves.

Probably need to get one someday soon.

I was looking for ammo for my M&P that I am going to purchase in the next week or so and was perusing the internet page for the gun shop I will be buying it from. Found advertised on it 600 rounds of American Eagle 63 grain 5.56 Green Tip for an amazing price. I know it's not the best for defensive purposes and according to friends you can't shoot it at indoor ranges but I couldn't let that stop me. I bought 1800 rounds for $268.00.

I honestly thought it had to be misprint. Looked closely at their policies and it said if there was a mistake they would contact me before putting the order through. Ordered it on Saturday online and today the charge went through on my bank account. Waiting on an email to tell me it's ready to pick up.

And good score on the 5.56 ammo! Bud's Guns in Lexington Ky. had that stuff on an in-store-only special when I was there a couple years ago. It's actually shot very well in my AR's, accurate, clean, and consistent on the chronograph. My indoor range doesn't allow it, but where I practice outdoors, no problem!

Well the ammo deal fell through. Even though they put the order through and charged my card, I got a call when the ammo arrived in the store and the dude says that there is a problem. He says the price I paid should have been the price on 600 rounds and not 1800 rounds. The problem I have with that is the fact that I added a note to the online order when I placed it telling them that if it was a mistake on the price then cancel the order. I followed that up with a phone call to the store and told them what I bought and was pretty sure the price was wrong, and they assured me that if the price was wrong on the website I would be contacted before it was charged, welllllllll it didn't.

So the guy tells me I can either accept the 600 rounds for the $264 I paid or he can refund me my money. It was a take it or leave it offer, so I left it. I told him he could kindly refund my money and even though he gave me a good price on the gun to go with the ammo, I would not be purchasing the gun either. If he had offered to throw in 150 or 300 extra rounds to go with the 600 rounds I would have taken it and been happy, because it wasn't my mistake, but the attitude he had caused me to say nopers, I will never worry about doing any business there in the future.

The good news is I saw a post in a forum thread about a place called Whittakers Guns in Kentucky that has the M&P 15 Sport II for $499.00. So I just placed the order for the M&P and 8 Gen 3 Magpul 30 round pmags to go with it for $615 and that includes insurance on the shipment. The guy with the ammo fiasco wanted $609 for just the gun.

I hear you Steve, at the very least he seems to be one of those one way guys. His way or the highway. I also got the vibe that he was doing me a favor by selling me 600 rounds for $264, which was a decent price but they can be found for that all day long.

The M&P 15 Sport II is gonna be at my local shop tomorrow. I ordered a 34 inch UBG covert case for it so I can carry it in my car or truck with me. Got it from Walmart for 30 bucks. Same one a bunch of other places charge 50 or more for. Got a compartment that holds up to 8 mags and other junk plus the rifle compartment with 6 velcro fasteners to hold the rifle in there real nice. I am feeling pretty lazy today so I probably won't post a pic. LOL

Lately have "swapped up" in Glocks to the TALO version of models 17 and 19, fourth generation. Those AmeriGlo sights (tritium with red paint encircling the glass tube up front, rear notch is U shaped and opened up a bit) are very fast for my 55 year old eyes, without losing much precision. I shoot with friends weekly, we sort of keep score, and this was my first time ever opening a barrel of azz-whoop on all of them, in twenty plus years. Maybe they let me win because it happened to be my birthday..nah.

On a tangent, sometime over the holiday weekend the building management at my office put up signs on the front and back entrances "No firearms/any weapons past this point". Boy, I sure feel safer now. I'm sure anyone wanting to be a bad person is going to stop and give it a second thought now.

Funny thing is, until a month or two ago, you had to have a card key to get into the building, and there were security portals in place to access most areas of the building that also required a card key. Now, the portals are gone and the doors unlocked from 7 am to 6 pm, BUT we have a sign. Woohoo!

If you order the only difference I can see, from the manual, is that one slide has the caution capable of firing without magazine engraved on the side and the other doesn't. I wish I had the one without the caution disclaimer on it. It just aesthetics but I don't like it.

I'd been wanting to get a 9mm carbine of some kind for a while, but was in no hurry and took time to look at some in person. Also, it's become more of a buyer's market these last 9-11 months or so, another reason to not rush into a purchase.

Today I picked up a Freedom Ordnance FX-9, basically an AR platform in 9mm, that uses Glock magazines. Was able to get a (smallish) discount for cash, which allowed me to pick up a set of "iron" sights to throw on the gadget rail.

The FX-9 seems to have a good reputation, but this was the first one I'd seen in person, so I took the time to look it over pretty well. This thing appears fitted up nicely, and the outside looks like they clean the guns up pretty good before putting the finish on. There are certainly some AR makers who don't seem to think that, even in a really crowded field of competitors, they need to get rid of rough spots that a shooter's fingers really won't like.

Anyhow, I will get a chance to try this out on Sunday, hopefully.

Sounds pretty cool. The 9 is really nice in a carbine with the lower recoil which always equals accuracy.

10-30-2017, 09:59 AM
I tried out the Freedom Ordnance twice. It was hitting low at 15-20 yards, so I had to shorten the front sight post. Can't say I really like whittling on a brand new gun, or in this case the brand new MagPul back up sights, but it's mine so what the heck. That did the trick, it's dead on now. My 55 year old eyes are asking me to put a red dot scope on the top rail as well.

It functions just fine with all magazines tried, even when some jacketed hollow point ammo was mixed in. Based on my experience, and reviews read on line, I think the company has a winner here. Now, to talk Freedom Ordnance into sending me a logo hat or t-shirt for free! :D

It's been running just fine, I consider testing/break-in to be over. The 16" barrel adds give or take 300 feet per second to 115 grain ammo, compared to say a 4" Glock handgun.

I have it zeroed for 25 yards, which seems to put it an inch or so high at 50 yds. That goes along with what I've read, which further states it should then be almost dead on again at 100.

Anybody else notice the deals on some if not most of Remington's guns lately? For example the little RM380 can be had for $100 with sale price and rebate subtracted.
I think the company has been merged, conglomerated, and reorganized too many times. Plus, a couple of lawsuits on defective products haven't helped.

If you have confidence in their stuff, this may be a good time to buy.

I think Remington is trying to entice customers back with incredible pricing due to the bad press. They have had some hand guns in the past 15 years but I still swear by their rifles and wouldnt have a problem with most of their handguns.

On a different note, I just picked up a Makarov in the 9mm short. Had the egyptian version of this pistol in 380 about 20 years and its one of those I should have never let get away!

I took advantage of this and picked up my first shotgun this week! Less than $200 for a 870 12 Gauge. Should serve me well as I get my hunting license and begin down that path.

So I’m looking at getting a glock 43 for concealed carry. Any thought pro or con? Figured since I’ve been in Texas for a year now I need a gun like everyone else.

Nice and light to carry. I opted to get the Taran Butler +3 base pad then you have 9+1 rounds of 9mm

Depends on on your hands. The 43 moves around in my hand a lot but it’s a defensive piece not a shoot all day piece. I use the pierce plus one pinky extension and it doesn’t stick out much. I like the slim feeling of the 43 and even with the streamlight light and laser combo it’s still very light.

Added a glock 22 rtf 2 with the fish gills to the collection. Waiting for a ria mapp to come in

Anybody here subscribe to the online Blue Book of Gun Values? I probably should. Been trying to figure out what to ask for an Italian-reproduction black powder revolver and Gunbroker doesn't have much to go on. Prices of the few listed there are all over the map.

Nice and small, grip too small for me, I carry shields, better size for me and I don’t shoot Glocks anymore.

Which italian repro and what model? I may be able to help. My blue book hasnt been updated in a few years but should still be pretty close to right unless its almost new.

I'm with Remo on this the 43 is way too small for me but heck I got paws bigger n most peoples heads. I say shop around, try several in that size and caliber. The shield is a great option equally reliable, the Taurus curve is also a great option. If used is an option the Baikal/Makarov in 9x18 or 380 are great options . They are copies of the Walther PPK and equally reliable and very accurate. One last I would highly recommend is the Sig Sauer P225 or the P938 the are a little more expensive than any of the above though.

+1 on the Shield. In the woods my G20 is good, but for concealed I like the S&W.

Nice score on the AR.

On the Italian reproduction... In my experience they haven't been worth much more than a couple hundred bucks.

Finally picked up a new rifle that I've had my eye on for a while. Suppressor is paid for but waiting on them to give me the ok.

Only put 50 down the pipe so far. Figure 200 will be a good break in point.

It is an Armi San Marco (imported by Connecticut Valley Arms) Colt 1851 Navy reproduction. Picked up some helpful info from a gun show pal today. Probably worth about $150.
Thanks for chiming in. Much appreciated!
