Opening on the road, don't agree with that. Just means the A's need to stomp there in Detroit and finish at home for the fans.

Even though I am a Tigers fan, I disagree with the league having the higher seeded teams start on the road. Gives the underdog team a better chance to take a 2-0 lead to the favorite's barn.
Which is exactly what I hope the Tigers do to the A's.

I don't like it either. I don't particularly agree with the new wild card set up. I think Atlanta got screwed last night. Yeah they lost the game, but they had a much better season than St Louis and now they're out after one game. Tough ending a whole season on one game. Just my two cents. My Twins weren't anywhere near the whole thing so what difference does it make?:sh

Underdog? Most I have seen don't think the Tigers are the underdog. How can a team composed of a large number of AAA ball players at season start and the lowest salary in the major leagues be the favorite? For a large number of these kids its there first year and first post season experience. I have heard many think they may fold if they go down 0-1. Which is a very strong possibility. Is Tiger media trying to play the underdog card?

Interesting wild card games. I'm liking the A's or O's to advance and the Cards or Giants for the NL.

I based favorite on better record overall, better record in September, better record in close games. I guess I should have said "lower seeded" rather than favorite. Let's Go Red Wings! :lr

I'm pulling for the Tigers, but I think the A's have the edge across the board.
If the Tigers play like they should, it's no contest. They haven't all year.
The A's have just been solid. If they don't know they can lose, they're going to give the Tigers big trouble. If the Tigers go to the bullpen early, I'll be scared to death, and the A's have hit Tigers pitching well this year.
I honestly think that whichever team takes this evening's game will take the series, and pretty handily at that.
If I was betting, I'd say New York vs. San Fran, New York in 5 games.
And that'd suck. Ass.

Which is basically indicative of what p!$$es me off so much here. Seems like it's OK for people to be fans of any team they wish, as long as they hate the Yankees. It's BS, of the first filthy water.

I have to agree here!
Justin Verlander was the first man to ever get a handjob from 60ft 6inches away. -(P
You can't get down on the A's, all any team is looking for is a split.
You lose game one, on the road, with the other teams ace on the hill, not the end of the world.
Just make sure you get game 2!
:tf:tf
Nice job by the Reds, last night.
You lose your ace, in the first, on the road and still manage pull out a win.
Seeing him leave the mound brought back all the bad memories of the 03 World Series, game 5, when David Wells bailed on the Yanks.
Gonna make sure I have fresh batteries in the remote today!
Between NFL and 4 MLB games, I plan on doing a lot of channel changing. :D

Tigers got some good crappy calls. A's were not hitting regardless of the calls. Need to swing the bat to preform like they were. I agree, It wasn't a huge beat by the Tigers and they hung in there for a bit against one of the best pitchers in MLB. Need to bounce back strong this game and get there fans and them self's pumped up for returning to Oakland!

I used to think Inge was a good guy but he made a number of really shady statements. Basically blamed his poor performance, for the past 2-3 years, on lack of consistent playing time, weather, and the toothfairy. He WAS a huge fan favorite before he started that crap. By the end he had turned loyal fans against him. It eventually got so bad he was booed every time he took the plate. I hate to say it but I too like him and was turned off by his statements. Glad he's gone. Good luck with him.

:sh :D I don't know what you're talking about. I watched the game. Sure there were a few questionable calls on balls/strikes but so many people take the stupid box graphic as gospel. Please don't. The bad news: The A's have all the momentum, and the emotion.
The good news: The Tigers have maybe the top pitcher in baseball to pitch Game 5.
The Tigers' big bats aren't inspiring much confidence in me right now. I think to pull it off, they will need a big performance from Verlander, and a couple of role players to come up big. Oh, and maybe Benoit to get lost on his way to the ballpark. :r

He did but only because he was attacking that spot. IMO they were strikes. When the A's pitchers threw to the same spot it was called the same way. Will balls and strikes the best you can ask for is consistency. JV was sick, really at his best last night.
On a side note I was surprised how many stolen bases the A's gave up. It's unusual for the Tigers to have 3 stolen bases in a week, let alone one game.

5er for the series? Or would you like to up the stakes? You decide.
Just so you know up front, I don't have any mini monsters to send you if you win! ;)
Fun fact I heard on the radio yesterday: This was the first time the Yankees got out of the first round since 2001, when they didn't play the Twins
It will be nice to play the Tigers in a 7 game series instead of 5.
I don't know if the Yanks announced their rotation yet, but I expect they will throw CC, on short rest in game 3, opposite Verlander.
This will set up CC and Justin to pitch game 7, on full rest.

The way the Yanks set up the rotation may be what makes or breaks this series.
CC has to go 3 and 7.
Do you go Andy 1 and 5? 1 and 6?
Kuroda game 2 on short rest and game 6 full rest? Or pitch him game 4?
If Kuroda doesn't go game 2, who does?
If it were up to me
Andy
Lowe
CC
Kuroda
Hughes
Andy
CC
Figure game 2 some combination of Lowe and phelps getting the yanks thru 5 and heavy bullpen after that. Girardi can lean on the pen game 2 with an off day after.
I really didn't care about the ALDS starting on the road, but forcing the #1 seed to not have an off day, and thus have to use 5 starters, when their opponent only has to use 4, is a huge disadvantage.
It allows the Tigers to carry an extra arm in their pen.
I'm not gonna ***** too much because the Yanks had the opportunity to win game 4, and avoid this, but they still got a bit of a raw deal.

So, last night I'm talking to Davey Johnson through the tv right after Descalso ties the game, "Storen's got nothing, brother. You gotta bring in a pitcher just to break momentum." I figured a trip to the mound would have got it done if he wanted to stay with Storen, but he already used up his trip.
I really didn't think Storen couldn't get it done, but after seeing the look on Beltran's face earlier, I knew the Cards weren't the least bit afraid of him after seeing him two nights previous.
Then Kozma carries his balls of steel to the plate, game over.
What an awesome game. I'm still excited about it, and I couldn't get to sleep till 4:00 in the morning thinking about it.
This postseason has been incredible, to say the least. :tu

I'm not going to complain about the play a second.
Yes it was a bad call, and yes, it changed the dynamic of the game,
but when your team can't score a run, who cares about a bad call at second?
I've never been more disgusted with this ball club, than I was yesterday!
You would think they would want to go out there and win one for their captain, who more than likely picked each and everyone of their sorry asses up when they failed.
Or perhaps they would want to go out and score a run or two to support their teammate Kuroda, who was pitching his heart out, on short rest, for the first time in his career.
Or maybe you would think they would want to go out and score some runs because they had a tiny bit of self respect and competitiveness left inside them.
I don't want to knock Sanchez, he pitched a great game, but he's not Verlander.
The Yanks are certainly talented enough to hit him.
Instead they go out and look like lost children out there, and Girardi, after the game, came off like a whiny little school girl.

For the Yankees the series ended when Jeter broke his ankle. A-Rod has no heart and can't play in the clutch. Cano is becoming more like A-Rod when he should be more like Jeter. Too many Yankees look up to A-Rod as a team leader and that hurts the team. I really hope Cashman finds a team to trade him to this winter.

NO way should Nunez and Chavez be in the line up!
Nunez should NEVER be in the field.
Pure panic move by Girardi!
He's sacrificing defense, and Hoping Nunez hits.
And he's hoping Chavez hits too, he's 0 for 11 with 6 strike outs.
Not exactly stinging the ball!!

I tend to think of myself as a pretty level headed Yankee fan.
I try not to get too excited when they're up, and remain calm when they're low.
Despite what the PR machine tells me, I don't consider "not winning the World series" a failure of a season.
All that said, this is a disaster!
I've seen the Yanks lose plenty of series.
I've been sad, discouraged, and disappointed by past performances.
They've let me down, and broken my heart.
But never have they infuriated me, like they did in this postseason!
From top to bottom, I've never seen a more gutless performance!
I've never liked Girardi, and his performance here was awful!
To try and lay this at the feet of A-rod, while continuing to give Cano, Swisher, and Grandy a reach around, makes me want to bite his face like Max Cady.
If you want to bench A-rod, to make a point, Fine, but he was never going to win this series, under any circumstances, with A-rod on the bench!
I have so much more to add, but the vein bulging out of my neck, is forcing me to step away from the keyboard!

I agree Dom, it seems like the "experts" are trying to pin this on A-Rod. Well, as bad as he may have played, he didn't play in a couple games that they lost. How can you pin that on him? I don't really care for the Yankees, or the Tigers for that matter, but to say that this was anything other than a collective team loss, is crazy. Of course you have to give props to the Tigers for the excellent starting pitching, the timely hitting, and some solid defense. I don't see how any NL team is going to beat the Tigers at this point.

The national media is confounded, trying to figure out how the Yankees lost the series. They never can come to the idea that the Tigers WON and their pitching staff is really good. The Yankees pitching was pretty good overall; their offense chose not to show up. I think the Tigers holding on in game 1 and winning in the 12th dealt an emotional blow to the Yankees. If the Yankees win game 1, it's a different series.
BTW, the bolded statement was said in 2006 too. Not so thrilled with how that one worked out. This team is better than that one though IMO. Pitching is better and the middle of the lineup is better. Lineup 1-9 may not be quite what the '06 team was but overall a better team. What's sick is next year Delmon Young won't even be on the team. With V-Mart back as the DH, they won't need him. He's proven he can't play the field at all anymore. So, it wouldn't suprise me if the Tigers bench him in the NL park. It'll be him or Quentin Berry getting pined due to the Cards starters all being righties and no DH allowed. My bet is Leyland goes with the L-R matchup not Delmon due to his hot streak. At least that's been Leyland's leanings in the past anyway.

Looks like an all orange WS this year. I'm pulling for Detroit. Even though I'm a big NL fan, this will be the third year in a row that I've rooted for an AL team in the WS.

Ozzie Guillen fired from Miami Marlins...
Was there an obscenity laced tirade from Oz afterwards? I can't seem to find one on the interwebz. He doesn't seem like the type to quietly clean out his desk and leave the jobsite when pinkslipped.

After his glowing praise of Fidel Castro, it was inevitable he would be gone.
If he got hired by the Yankess, he would praise Adolph Hitler as a leader. He can't help himself.

Funny all day national media had this victory penciled in for Tigers.
Giants stronger pitches don't pitch till games 3 & 4. This will likely be a long series. Worried as Giants tend to play better when backs against the wall. Hope they don't get ahead of themselves.

Like Bobby V, Ozzy will be fine and will continue his career in baseball for many years to come, whether it be as a manager or whatnot. He just needs the right team and the right players and he'll be fine.

ESPN maybe, but the MLB network has shown footage for the past few days of Verlander getting lit up by Giants hitters in the All-Star game. I think they knew what was up. Tigers are still very much alive, just need to get their offense going like business as usual.

That was JV not taking the AS game seriously. It was fairly obvious and he admitted as much later. He was tying to put on a show and throw 200 mph.
The thing that was back breaking was Kung-Fu Panda, who had 12 HR all season, hitting 3 bombs and totalling 5 RBIs I believe all in game 1. The Papa Grande recovery experiment is over. At least we'll never see him take the mound again with a Tigers uni again.
Tig's better get game 2.

Not a knock on Verlander at all here, but not sure I buy his excuse after the AS game.
As for Sandoval, that's just the nature of the postseason.
With all that said, Go Tigers!

Giants firmly in the driver's seat. Outpitched again, masterful job by their staff.
I am a Tigers fan 'til the end, and still hold out hope that home cooking turns this around...but I know 4 out of 5 from a good team on a roll is a longshot.
Brutal to watch. Every last bounce, roll, and call is going the Giant's way. Fister pitched well despite taking that hit off the noggin that landed in center field. Think about how hard it had to hit to still have enough momentum to carry all the way into center. Man that had to hurt.
Anyway, still clinging to hope. The Tigers record was fantastic at home this year. Those bats better wake up. For the life of me I dont get why Dirks isn't in the lineup. I get R-L thing but Dirks has proven all season he can hit lefties. Garcia didn't give them anything through the first 2.

lol.
Every last bounce call and roll? This implies these games were close and could have gone either way. As to bounce in game 1 you got that two run fortunate bounce off the glove. It was a mistake to put the rookie in and he gave up 2. That game was 8-1 in reality. The tigers and your ace got destroyed in game 1. Destroyed did you miss the Panda taking your ace behind the wood shed? I have yet to see any questionable calls which could have gone either way. Fielder was out. Replay is very clear.
How about the Tigers start hitting the ball? How many hits did the Tigers have last night against a pitcher that had been benched?
How about in a 0-0 game you make the play at the plate to keep it 0-0. Not make the double play because your thinking your just going to magically start hitting.
You sound like that nightengale guy who is eating his hat. The Tigers have been out hit, out pitched, out coached. To say its coming down to bounces rolls and calls is such Crap.

The Giants pitching has been purty darn good.
SJ Mike, pour a little more lemon juice in our paper cuts, why don't ya?
Game 1 hit goes off third base, which would have ended the inning. End result 3 more runs scored in that inning.
Game 2 the bunt that rolled along the line spinning and stayed fair. The calls have been great. Replay proved that. My only complaint there is the strike zone is strangely small, especially east/west when Tigers are pitching. Giants are getting the outside pitch called for a strike consistently where the Tigs aren't. It's not the reason for the 2-0 lead but it contributes.
I'm not complaining or making excuses. My point is EVERYTHING is going the Giant's way. Panda had 12 HR in 162 games then hits 3 in WS-Game1. I wouldn't have expected that if I was pitching. Heck he chipped the third one over the wall like he had a pitching wedge in his hand. Unreal.
Prince was out at home thanks to a terrible slide. Get outside the baseline when the catcher is setup insidem OR, hit the plate with your front foot and you'd have been safe. The only slides I've seen worse were by Delmon Young during the season where BOTH feet missed the bag.
Point taken about hitting a bad pitcher. All year it seems pitchers who were struggling magically right the ship against the Tigers. Bum was just the latest. What was his postseason ERA coming in 11.5? JV's was 0.74 and he gets beat up for 5 runs. Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot?

Sorry mang. I just have watched the national media crap on the Giants even after game 1. Then now instead of saying the Giants Pitchers are just dealing filth I see a lot of "the Tigers are beating themselves" crap. It gets tired with the OOOO if not for this or that. Baseball is the ultimate game of skill and luck. That said its also about matchups. The Tigers stats were exaggerated to an extent playing in the worse division in the whole league. Given now that the #1 and #2 pitchers of the Giants are going against the #3 and #4 pitchers of the Tigers, I like the Giants chances to take one of the next 2 or possibly both. Unless they Pitch JV on short rest. The National media thinks the Tigers can all still magically start hitting. The Giants faced Pitchers like the Tigers in the last series, no ones mentioning that. The Tigers faced a horrible pitching line up against the Yankees. The Giants staff is very different and better then the Yankees. This is all so familiar to the Giants Rangers series. The old they are a joke they have no chance. They will get out pitched and hit.
It also drives me nuts that everyone is saying how great this team is. They managed just 88 wins in the worse division in baseball. Put them in the West or the East and they dont even make the dance. It just makes a lot of us out here shake our heads.
Rant over.
As to last night.
Got Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeem!!
Edit I take Boch as the better skipper also.

Tigers are great on paper. I would be the first to agree that they underperformed this regular season, Mike. Their starting pitching was amazing in the ALDS and ALCS and gave fans a glimpse of what could be.
I have given kudos to the Giants pitching since right after Game 1, and said the Tigers were outpitched in Game 2 as well. I could give a f*** what the national media says, they're 67% wrong 80% of the time. ;)

Agreed on that. Not just baseball, but hockey as well.
All that said I am going to be bored as hell when the series is over. Not a football guy and without hockey lifes going to be boring.
I would just like to state that I am in no way saying the series is over. If the Tigers do get hot I think they can still take it 7 and maybe even come back. I really do think pitching is pretty even on both sides. I will say I think this is the first of the post season series that the Tigers have faced a legitamate pitching staff. Even though Kane is the #1 he has not had an easy go this post season and has walked the tightrope a lot. Both the Giants next two startes are better then the last two though. So the Tigers will need to get hot against better pitchers then they have seen. With Timmy coming out of the bullpen also its not going to be easy to get hot.

Tigers cut Papa Grande and Delmon Young loose....they say Victor Martinez will be the DH in 2013.
They will try to resign Larid, but he has said that he will seek a bigger paycheck.
Their priority will be resigning Anibal Sanchez. They also say they have a prospect who may fill the closer role.

Rangers made Hamilton a qualifying offer...just to ensure they get draft pick compensation. My Mets need a complete new outfield...just sad that Sandy won't be dropping a large wad of cash down. We still have to lock up Wright and am afriad we wil be stuck with another AA/AAA outfield on 2013.
