Four Consecutive BCS National Championships (Florida 06, LSU 07, Florida 08, Alabama 09)
Two teams in the AP's Preseason Top 5
Four teams in the AP's Preseason Top 25
By the time of early summer swelters, college football fans in the South wait impatiently for the first game's kickoff. And no where more than in the states that make up the Southeastern Conference. From Woo Pig Suey in Fayetteville, to grinding it out between the hedges in Georgia, to checkered fedoras in Bryant-Denny, to We Are the Boys in the Swamp or War Damn Eagle at Auburn. SEC football is a way of life
We've been touting our conference as the best in the NCAA for decades. With the conference shakeups of the offseason, the other conferences not so subtly acknowledge the SEC as the pinnacle of play as they tried in vain to catch up.
It's something the rest of ya'll just don't understand :banger

Yeah it is. Nothing i love better than whoopin' Tennessee's @ss up and down the field (except maybe UGA's) but i almost hope UT plays us tough just to give our young team some battle experience before going into the WWIII atmosphere that will be Bryant-Denny

Thanks for getting the thread started right!! Roll Tide!
Now, lets kick off serious discussions: Wouldn't it send the signal to the NFL to get their house in order if ALL SEC schools excluded scouts at practices until the NFL developed a proper plan to deal with the devastation being caused to college players, their education and the college programs by un-ethical scouts and/or agents. This is really a NCAA wide need, not just the SEC. But, giving the current power rating of the SEC, maybe if we lead the way, we can get the NFL to at least acknowledge their responsibility.
Too heavy for this thread?

I think that would be a good thing. The only negative is that a coach has to totally close practices even from fans, as Meyer and Saban did, in order to assure no scouts or agents infiltrate. Football crazy SEC fans have become accustomed to attending practices but i think most fans approve of closing them for the greater good

Yeah i heard that. He's also a little dinged up right now i think but he was nothing short of stellar when i played last year. Hopefully he can solve the off the field issues, get healthy and he'll be a perennial all-star

Ditto, baby!!!
And, it's that support of tradition, and the appreciation of the heartfelt efforts placed on the field by the student athletes that makes college football so big. That tradition with U of A and AU is, IMO, the main reason that Birmingham will never have a successful NFL team (plus the fact we don't have the size to support one, even if the demand was truly there)!

If Mallett has calmed down a bit and worked on his foot work (we here that he has) then he will likely be the best QB in the NCAA. Add that with a returning group of core receivers - probably the best over all core in the SEC - and a stable chock full of running backs and we will dominate the score board.
The biggest question mark is the defense. Last year's D was terrible... But we've made some changes and picked up some key players and word from the camp is that the D is MUCH improved. If it is... and the stars align on offense then I fully expect to see big things happening for the Razorbacks.
I have high expectations and even higher hopes for this season!

Funny thing is... The Arkansas/Bama game usually determines who has the better season. It is both my favorite and least favorite game to watch as both are teams that I root for. I mean, obviously I pull a bit more for my Hogs... but I also find myself cheering every time Bama gets a touchdown or breaks down our offense. Most of my family are Bama fans including those of us from Arkansas - who are obviously Hog fans. That being said... We're gonna stomp a mud hole in you guys this year! :su

Ya know, I don't typically like to engage in smack, but for some strange reason the above post came flying out of the peanut gallery. I knew there was something behind it, I just couldn't quite remember. Then I found it...
Calling BS on this. Show me a Gator fan that would pull a Bulldog fan out of a burning building and I'll show you a traitor. There is NO love-loss between Fla-Ga, Auburn-Alabama, anybody-Tenn. And there is nothing wrong with this. There is a genuine hatred between bitter rivals. As an Ohio State fan, I know this first-hand with that team from up north.
Wouldn't you know it, a buckeye fan with a beef against the SEC, trash talking about the NCAA. That's pretty original. Don't see that very much. :r
So, I was thinking I just heard something about the buckeyes the other day...
Ohio State Admits Secondary Violations (http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2010/07/ohio_state_admits_secondary_vi.html)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The recruitment of offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson created a lot of paperwork for the Ohio State compliance office. The Buckeyes' chase of the highly-rated recruit led to the school reporting four secondary NCAA violations, most of which had nothing to do with the OSU coaching staff
Well, at least it had nothing to do with the coaching staff.;)
Then I remembered seeing something else recently regarding recent NCAA violations...
Other leagues pass SEC on NCAA's scoreboard (http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100815/COLUMNIST0202/8150364/David-Climer-Other-leagues-pass-SEC-on-NCAA-s-scoreboard)
From that article...
Since Jan. 1, 2005, the SEC has had three schools found guilty of major violations.
In that same time period, four Division I conferences had more schools found guilty of major infractions — the Big Ten, the Big 12 and Sun Belt with five apiece, and the Mountain West with four.
Then I could have sworn I remembered reading something else...
OSU Cheats (http://www.dispatch.com/live/content//local_news/stories/2009/05/31/FERPA_OSU.ART_ART_05-31-09_A14_D4E14K6.html)
Since 2000, Ohio State has reported to the NCAA more than 375 violations -- the most of any of the 69 Football Bowl Subdivision schools that provided documents to The Dispatch through public-records requests....About 4,000 violations a year are reported to the NCAA, many of them unknown to the public because of FERPA. But one thing is certain: Ohio State has more than most. Florida, for example, reported 112 violations since 2000, and Oklahoma reported 224.
That can't be right can it? I mean, THE Ohio State University, that great bastion of all that is good in the world?

OSU = Owned by the Gators.
Have any Gator fans noticed that UCLA was actually a big help to us during three of our championship years? During the 06 football championship year, the only reason we were able to go was because UCLA beat USC which cleared the way for us. During the 1st basketball championship we beat UCLA in the title game and for the 2nd championship we beat them in the 1st final four game which put us into the game with OSU.....
So UCLA both winning and losing has helped us along the way.... I just thought it was an interesting side note that they were a random out of conference team that UF hopscotched over or benefited from their successes in order for us to get to our championships. So go Bruins...kinda

Im reposting this here b/c I think the audience would appreciate it more but this is something I found. Its called The last decade of SEC Football according to facebook http://chadgibbs.wordpress.com/2010/08/24/the-last-decade-of-sec-football-according-to-facebook/
Well I knew that most of you just couldn't wait for me to check in. I know more than
a few of you who were thinking this was gonna be a great year since I had not popped in
over 4 pages. Sorry Greg, lol. This MIGHT be the best season of SEC football in a decade.
So many great teams have to actually SHOW their credentials to get in. UF lost a ton of people,
but I think they actually recruited enough show-stoppers to negate all that. Still, some teams
are gonna give em a run as these new kids get their cleats under em. A couple coaches
will be fighting for their lives as well. Some new coaches might even feel a lil nervous. And
what's the most interesting game of the week next week?? Memphis and Miss St., lol.
OOOPps, forgot LSU-NC. WOW. I am no giant fan of NC, but this should be a scare for both teams.
Who knows who will win that one.

I've been a fan of theirs since high school. I had never liked (and still don't like) Notre Dame football, and when I was young and impressionable I happened upon an incredible comeback by the Vols against the Irish. (Here's a link to the story from the SI Vault (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1140275/1/index.htm)) If I rooted for them or not before that game, I'm not sure, but, like Keith said, this area of the country isn't exactly a college football hotbed.
"My team" is actually Rutgers. I'm an alum; the class of '96. The program has just recently become relevant, but since attending I have been a fan. I get to one or two games a year.

Gotcha. I don't know many yanks with UT ties, that's why I asked.
Being born and raised a Bama fan, the rivalry with UT has always been a special one. Growing up, UT was my second favorite team behind Bama. The third Saturday in October has always been a day I look forward to. Unfortunately, Phat Phil took a lot of luster off the historic rivalry and replaced it with some pretty nasty venom. Time tends to heal most wounds though, and I hope in time the Bama-UT rivalry can get back to what it once was. But for now, I hope we kick the living dog shite out of y'all come October. :D

Your feelings toward Fulmer are similar to mine for Spurrier. Man, I can't stand that guy.
My Dad is originally from the Western part of NC, so I do have some southern ties. A lot (lot) of family is still in Western NC (Statesville area). My Uncle moved to Knoxville and his son went to UT and is now a professor there, so I have some semblance of a tie to UT. That may be why I first became a fan, but it was a while ago, so I'm not sure.

one blew it and the other came close. I guess it looked like that, and it can certainly be argued, but I am not sure who let off
the gas. Miles is not a real 'let off the gas' guy, so I think the play calling or the execution got
sloppy and LSU flirted with losing to, no rent-a-win for sure, BUT a self-depleted team that
played extremely tough. Those two formerly not-scheduled-to-play linebackers were a
couple of black tornados, weren't they?! THAT'S when things tightened up for LSU for sure.
Those two came in and proceeded to pop some leather. But for all the poof scheduling, first
game of the season drek on display in the SEC, it was nice to see a real game. I'll say this to

Go Gamecocks! I am a die hard Gamecock fan. Only 2 games ever matter to me--Clemson & Georgia. I think my might mighty gamecocks will take down both teams this year.
It is crazy some how Clemson fans* refuse to give any credit, ever. When S.C. wins a game, it is because the other team sucked or had a bad day. When S.C. loses, it is because they suck. Those same Clemson fans also refuse to believe they would get nowhere if they were in SEC, instead of ACC. A prime example of how weak ACC is was last year when the ACC #1 & #2 ranked teams (Georgia Tech & Clemson) were both beaten by mid/low ranked SEC teams (Georgia & S.C.).

Honestly, it probably shouldn't. I mean, you HAVE seen Richardson run, right? I've got a sneaking suspicion that that guy is going to make us hurt. Ingram doesn't scare me as much as Trent. We'll see how our new defense really is against GA on Saturday. If our O doesn't step it up and start syncing then we don't stand a hopes prayer against Bama. Don't know if ya'll heard yet but one of Florida's stud players, Chris Rainey, got arrested for aggravated stalking:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5570905
I've got a little more info on the story in that I was good friends with a chick at UF who happened to live in Chris Rainey's dorm when they were both freshmen (in 2006). She is a smokin' hot blonde and Rainey took a liking to her. After turning him down several times Rainey got creepy and starting leaving sexually inappropriate voicemails and text messages. A couple times he knocked on her dorm room wanting to come in and talk, which of course she did not open.
While he never left threatening messages like he did in this current instance, it was definitely an issue of sexual harassment and this friend of mine nearly contacted the UFPD when finally Rainey dropped it and left her alone.
Point of the story is that this is a character trait for Rainey and one I think that is all too susceptible for athletes.
Don't care how good of a player he is, Meyer and the Gators do not want or need guys like this wearing an orange n' blue uniform

I still hate everything Georgia... but Tennessee has moved to the top of my hate list after what Fat Phil did to Bama when his lyin', cheatin' arse was doing all that and more (although I wish you all would bring his dumb arse back so we could beat on him some more). Then they bring in the motormouth Lame Kitten and they got EXACTLY what they deserved. That dog of a mascot is flea bitten worse than UGA. They have the ugliest girls in the SEC. We could easily lose the game, but I hope we hang 100 on them... Go Gators!!!!

Alright folks I'm tired of watching the Alabama "Practice" :r
Well, it was an emotional rollercoaster of a game for me today gents. Start off elated, then brought down, then elated and nervous... Then crushed... Then defeatest... Then OMG Wow! Praising Mallett for saving our bacon again.
In the end it comes down to our Defense still being erratic and sloppy. Our secondary was craptastic, our corners were slow, our linebackers kept overshooting or not even bothering the QB. Our entire offensive line needs to have their butts collectively served on a platter for their failure today. We need a lot of work gents.
I really thought that this could be the season... We have the schedule (for once), we have a QB that's the best in NCAA, a receiving corps that's the best in SEC, a helluva good coach. But unfortunately we're proving not yet ready to take the SEC. After today's performance I have next week's Bama game as a 21pt break for Bama.

yes sir :D
its the first slate of really interesting SEC matchups. we'll find out a lot about who's gonna be a big contender in both divisions by the end of this week. We'll see if Arkansas is for real if they can play Bama close while USC gets its first test on the road at what i think is an overrated Auburn team; they should win by 10
Meanwhile it is a very real probability that Georgia loses at the hands of Dan Mullen Bulldogs and goes 0-3 in the SEC for the first time since Abe Lincoln's presidency
If Arkansas can stop the run (lol) then they have a real chance to upset the Tide.
LSU has to prove that at least their defense is as good as it will need to be to win
the SEC West.;)
The rest....I'd WATCH it if that is what the TV makes me do, but it had better be good

Arkansas, stop the run?? Have you seen their run defence this year? Add in trying to stop Ingram/Richardson and they will have their hands full. Unless the Tide secondary gets torched the whole game and the Hogs somehow stops Bama's "O", the Tide takes this one.
We will see how good that Tiger "D" is when they have to stop Noel Divine. They will need to cause there is no way LSU will win a shootout with WV IMHO.

Never been much of a fan of a pass based offence like those of Petrino and others (ahem... Boise State)... When you pass... three things can happen... and two of them are bad. Clear evidence in this game. Mallet was a victim of immaturity and circumstance... Immaturity... yes... don't try to deny it... he's a QB who, despite the CBS announcers attempts to play up his maturity, has only encountered such a pressure situation as today's game... He's never faced the No. 1 team in the country... ever... and I don't care how "mature" the announcers say he is... the evidence on the field speaks for itself. He made bad decisions that were forced by pressure to score. It's easy to see interceptions coming when there is urgency to move the ball down the field in a hurry to increase/regain the lead... through the passing game.

I was so unsure of this game that I did not have a victory cigar picked out, or even in mind. I actually prefer it when Bama comes up thru the polls, not starts as # 1. Tends to give them the big head and is more often a disaster waiting to happen! I have to go back to Bear Bryant's football rule #1 as stated by Jeremy. You pass, three things can happen, and two of them are bad. Showed from both teams today. Especially lethal when the defense knows you have to pass!
I don't plan on picking out a victory cigar for Ala-Fla game either! just too close to call, too many good SEC teams that we have to play.

Looks like a Stephen Garcia special. I'll always love Spurrier but I didn't think it was wise when he replaced Garcia with the rookie (as the INT proved). If you wanna solve the problem of Garcia's fumbles tell him not to run! Putting a game on the road in the SEC in the hands of a freshmen QB ain't smart

Aha...what a weekend. Toledo beat Purdue, lol. Gotta love that. The Tide was looking like OLS knew
what he was talking about, and then the Razorbacks fell apart in the end. Or I should say the Tide
tightened up. Nickie Saban is the king of halftime adjustments. Everyone is trouncing the UGA Bulldogs,
and last year that would have bothered me, but this year it does not. Mountaineers lose one game
this year so far, and thank goodness it's to my LSU TIGERS. Memphis has never lost to UTEP, but
did this weekend, but from all accounts, it was 'progress'.

Neither would I! Frankly, we were the major obstacle for Bama this year in the SEC... and we saw how that went. If anyone is going to take them down it will likely be Auburn. Not b/c they are that good - they aren't - but b/c of the rivalry. Of course, Bama has home advantage for that game too. They'll be playing LSU at the swamp so that should help LSU a bit... but I don't think that it'll be enough.
Granted... We exposed several of the weaknesses in Bama's D and some in the offense (what few there are). So perhaps the Gators coaching staff has watched and re-watched that footage and made some adjustments. Otherwise, and don't take this the wrong way, you guys are hosed. If Bama can come to my house, with 76,000+ fans rattling their eye balls and make a comeback, I don't think too many teams out there stand a prayer in Tuscaloosa.
Of course, I won't be too horribly upset if Bama looses to any two of the remaining challenges (LSU, Auburn, Florida) and Arkansas manages to win out :D. Frankly, though, I just don't see that happening. This is probably one of the best damned teams that college football has seen in about a decade or so. Plenty of depth and a roster chock full of some serious talent.

Bama aint Ohio State lol. Florida may be rich in talent... But they haven't exactly been world beaters this season. They've played well in 1 game so far... and even then it wasn't the kind of showing that is needed against Bama. You guys are going to have to BRING IT!
I know... LSU may call it "Death Valley"... but that place is a freakin' swamp.
It's actually kind of odd. I'm sure that I've mentioned before that I'm a Bama fan (when they aren't playing Arkansas - then I hate them for the week). This normally hasn't been a conflict of interest for me for the past decade or so -- thanks in large part to Hootie Dale... But this year is different. I actually find myself at odds. I want teams that I don't typically like (FL, AU) to beat a team that I do. (Sorry, I'll NEVER bring myself to root for LSU). B/C that raises the chances for Arkansas to get into the SECCG if we win out.
...this is going to be a tough year on me.
PS: if you're wondering... I REFUSE to call LSU's home "Death Valley." Why? B/c I hate them and that would be a sign of respect.

Bama got past a major hurdle beating the Hogs and that was Mallet. No other QB the tide faces this year (in the SEC) can do to them what Mallet did. Looking forward, what are Bama's defensive challenges:
Gators- Stopping the run/short passing game
South Carolina- Stopping the run/hit or miss passing game
LSU- nothing really, Jordan Jokerson and "LESS Miles" will do what they always do, suck!
and that leaves Auburn. nobody ever knows what will happen there.
All I can say is that while Bama's young defense has some holes in it, they are still pretty good. So to beat the tide, your going to have to out score them. I'm not saying they will go undefeated again this year or that they will win or even go to the NC, but I like their chances better than I do anyone elses.
We have a chance... but I sure wouldn't be betting the mortgage money on this one!!!As much as I value our friendship, I think that's a bit of a stretch.
Even Tebow couldn't put a dent in that juggernaut last year. And now you guys have lost
key players, had injuries and otherwise given UF fans a good scare. BUT, because math
is black and white, I agree, you have a chance, lol. And in the SEC you can never say
never. But at home, the Tide coming off that stunning romp in Arkansas, I don't see it.
But this year, I do not have this built in anti-FL harangue planned. What happens in the
east is not my problem til the Tigers head for Atlanta.

That interception was not his fault. If the WR comes down with that catch like he should have Spurrier is a genius....

That was a rough game to watch. Hopefully, my Gamecocks get their act together.

I wouldn't call it a stunning romp. I would call it barely escaping... As for LSU... :r:r See ya on Nov 28th.

Good analysis, Pass. Exactly what many of us have been saying--our D is young, not necessarily inexperienced, but young. And until they grow up they're going to give up their share of missed/blown assignments, missed tackles, and bad angles that when you go up against a good team is going to hurt. And Arky hurt us early much the same way Auburn did last year. What this team has, that I don't see any others possessing, is an evenness of attitude that when things aren't going exactly as planned, they don't panic. They do what they do. And ss a long time Bama fan, it's beautiful thing. You know what we're going to do---now stop us.
In my opinion, and I'm not a big smack talker, Florida is gonna have some tough sledding Saturday. Not to say they can't beat us, because that ain't the case. But personally, I don't think the oddsmakers are close on this one. And I think Urban's ego might have something to do with that. ;)
Your sentiments are preciously what I hope everyone is believing (including Bama players) and telling the Gators. A team always plays better with an us against the world mentality, especially one with such talent and prestige as Florida. Mikey,
I hardly think Florida has an us against the world mentality, nor do they need one. Florida is the nouveau riche golden child. Bit of trivia for ya...when is the last time Florida came into a game as an underdog?
I do, however, think Florida has this game circled for the wrong reasons. And that starts at the top. :2

Last time UF was an underdog....hmmm i'd guess the 08 SEC championship against ya'll.
One big concern I have for Florida this game is that no body on our young team has had to comeback from behind, especially Brantley. Not to mention come back from behind on the road in Bryant-Denny! Bama might be young but you've already handled a tough comeback win and are really creating an identity, as you mention. Florida's identity is still nascent.
Think we can be in real trouble if we find ourselves down by two possessions in the second half and the Bama D knows we have to be aggressive and not do short passes
Gators will have to have some big special team plays, get consistently good field position so Brantley doesn't have to drive the whole field, win the tournover battle, create big plays and hold Bama to 21 points or less to come away with a W. Needless to say thats a lot to ask lol

I think you're dead on. Florida can't afford to get down early. If they do, you could see a repeat of last year's game. I don't think that will be the case though because our D just isn't there yet. But I really, really , really, hope y'all load the box to stop the run.

Two key things to watch out for on Florida's D: (1) the play of the defensive line, particularly DE #6 Howard, he's been a force. (2) UF leads the universe so far this season in interceptions with 12. Definitely be needing a defensive line push led by Howard, Jenkins to contain Julio Jones and the secondary as a whole to get a few picks :2
Is it Saturday night yet?? :D

Heh. Not so much. It's the middle routes and slants that they'll eat you up with. Stuff the box and count on a 6yrd toss. Get busted on a screen and count on the Jones link up unless he's swarmed... Then they'll hit ya for a quick 5+. How many times did McElroy even attempt to throw a pass longer than 7yrds? Not many at all. And our safeties aren't exactly stellar. Coverage was fairly good... but not THAT good. No, they knew we would try to contain the big plays.... so they beat us up with those middle routes. Look for more of that against UF.

As much as I value our friendship, Brad, Alabama hardly appears to be a "juggernaut" so far this season. ;) Great team, but barely got by Arkansas. UofF certainly has a chance in the game.

Careful... UF barely got away from us last year too. And it took the SEC officials to do it for them.
...and I won't even mention how much better we are this year. But hey, thanks for not giving us any credit.
