Is the regular season this intense? For some reason when I am flipping thru the channels and the Blue Jackets are on, I get bored.
Noo, playoff hockey is completely different than regular season play.

I don't normally watch hockey, but I have watched pretty much every game of the Stanley Cup finals. This stuff is intense. I love how passionate each team is. Always fighting!
As long as I live, I will never forget how much I laughed when Bostons goalie hit the dude from Vancouver a few games ago. The guy for Vancouver hit Boston's goalies stick and then when the refs weren't looking he took out the dudes knee from behind :r
I could just hear the goalie saying "Don't touch my stick! I'm gonna take out your knee f--ker!" :r
Dan...You have watched every game of the SCF, and you don't know the Bruins' goalie's name is Thomas, or the Vancouver "dude" is Burrows? :r

Daniel Sedin has guaranteed a game 7 victory.
"We're 3-3 and we won all three games at home and we have the fourth game at home," he said of the series, according to the report. "So we have the seventh game at home and we'll take that. We are confident."

That's because they are the Blue Jackets. :r To be fair, regular season hockey is not as intense. However, I feel regular season hockey is more intense than regular season NBA games. I wouldn't compare it to the NFL or MLB because they are just so vastly different.
I really hope Boston can win game 7. It will send Bobby Lou into a career tailspin that he likely won't recover from. Heck even if they win, I be the Canucks try to move him ASAP. Good luck with that contract though.

I think everyone is hoping they fail. As the comments from players around the league show. Its not just almost all hockey fans outside BC that dont like them. Hell fans on this board dont like them. Its hard to like a bunch of bit&hes who cry at every whistle to the refs talk **** but wony back up the talk. Players around the league dont like them and have come out and said so. You just dont see that very often.
I think regular season hockey is more intense then basketball or baseball obviously. Football no, but I really only watch baseball besides hockey.

The Sedins were involved in and setup 2 of the 3 goals in Game 2, and were an offense threat pretty much every shift in both the first 2 games. They may not have been a threat last night, but honestly who on Vancouver was?
I would be pretty surprised at this. I expect the Canucks and Bruins to split in Boston then head back for the decider this Friday in Vancouver. I actually thought that Boston would take game 4 and not game 3, but either
way. If Boston does manage to send the series back to Van tied at 2 it will be Vancouver in 7.
Not a chance. If something like that was going to happen it would have been in the Chicago series. The Hawks are the only team that's really gotten into Vancouver's head, everyone else are just teams that you occasionally have bad games against. Vancouver is still the odd-on favourite, but Boston is going to make is a great series :tu
He's been a significant figure in the league long enough that he certainly deserves it. Just like I hope that Trevor Linden's involvement with the Canucks this year is enough to entitle him to a ring. Both those guys are well deserving of the championship that was denied them in their long and distinguished playing careers.
Luls I guess they should just give the Canucks the Cup now then eh. I mean why play if theres no chance the Bs can win.
I mean the Giants werent predicted to win a single series last post season but they won it all. Dont jump the gun so soon.
How them apples taste imagine pretty $hitty.
Once again Vancouver shows why their fans suck. Nice chants and throwing crap at players. So glad that bunch of Nancys and their anthem boing, anti american comment chanting a$$ fans got punked in their own house.

I was reading some of the tidbits from the game and series, thought I'd share a couple:
The oldest Conn Smythe Trophy winner in NHL history stopped a jaw-dropping 238 of the Canucks' 246 shots in the finals for a .967 save percentage. That's even better than his .940 mark and 1.98 goals-against average for the entire postseason.
The Bruins are the first team in NHL history to win a Game 7 three times in the same postseason, and Thomas posted shutouts in the decisive game of the Eastern Conference finals and the Stanley Cup finals.
And my favorite mistake from ESPN.com, doesn't anyone proofread articles??
The NBA finals ended before the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2002, when the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Detroit Red Wings to their respective titles.

Lets not forget them throwing things at players and Bettman. A water bottle came flying in at Thomas. I kept seeing stuff coming over the glass. I dont think to many would be sad to see Bettman hit, but as usual way over the top from those fans. I figured with all that pot they would be happy.
Man a lot of people rioting had the Luongo jersey. :r
Well hes signed till 43 with a no trade clause apparently. Maybe he will get one eventually, but they were already talking about the defense core and their moves. One things for sure it was not as deep as they thought it was and they will lose a player or two. Hopefully the NW is tougher next year so their record isnt inflated again.

who cares? anyone going to go and watch the games next year? geriatric ward recchi and thomas proved the stanley cup is a rigged game, those two physical specimens never got touched once- obviously bettman et all warned everyone they risked a lifetime ban from hockey if either of those 2 were hurt- and obviously the refs also had the same directive and threat for all the on ice violence in boston----i want my money back for all the games i attended this was a big sham-scam
I have heard the local green was good, but I didn't know it was THAT good. :tf

Vancouver Canucks
By Greg Wyshynski
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
(Ed. Note: As the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue, we're bound to lose some friends along the journey. We've asked for these losers, gone but not forgotten, to be eulogized by the people who knew the teams best: The fans who hated them the most. Here is Sam Fels of the Chicago Blackhawks blog Second City Hockey, fondly recalling the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks. Again, this was not written by us. Also: This is a roast and you will be offended by it, so don't take it so seriously.)
By Sam Fels
I think there was a part of all of us that wanted to see how much trash the Rogers Arena crowd could throw into the Cup from the top deck. Instead, Canucks fans, you saved it for Gary Bettman, which has to be the hardest target ever. Not only is it classless, but far too challenging. You work your way up to that, people. Maybe start with that latest car you set on fire.
Anyway, we've come here today to kick dirt, dance gleefully, avoid the fires witness the burial of the Vancouver Canucks.
Oh how they told us it would be different this year. What was it you said after the Hawks were defeated? "They've slayed the dragon?" Well, it doesn't really help if you slay the dragon but the town is still destroyed. It helps less if you destroy the town yourself.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
Ryan Kesler(notes) doing his "how do you like me now" celebration over a smoldering rubble just isn't the same.
But little did we know that barely escaping the first round against a beat-up and exhausted eighth-seed in OT wasn't the Prestige, but merely the Turn. As we all know, making what is known suddenly disappear isn't enough — you have to bring it back. Well, unless you're named Sedin. And thankfully, you did bring back the Canucks we all knew and…well, knew, just in time.
That's OK, maybe you can hang yet another meaningless banner that you seem to love so much to commemorate your first-round victory. Right there next to that one applauding yourselves. After all, you gave one to Markus Naslund(notes). What, was Gerald Diduck busy that day?
Hey, you there, lighting the car on fire. We know how you in B.C. like to medicate yourselves in times of stress, but you can't hotbox an entire province. Save that for your car or bathroom. Oh? What? Oh is that Canucks fans acting without any class? Sorry, I should have guessed. Anyway, let's move on.
Fear not Nucks fans, this can be a time of learning. You….what? I'm sorry, what did you say? "Learning"? It means to acquire knowledge for future use. You're not familiar with that? Well, stick with us here, you might be. I know, it's going to be rough, but I promise you'll get through it. And put that Molotov cocktail down, you still look like a wanker.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
Right, first thing you can learn? Don't trumpet your offseason acquisitions as strokes of utter genius in July. That tends to turn people off.
Yes, Dan Hamhuis(notes) is a fine D-man. Chris Pronger(notes) he ain't. If he were, he wouldn't have been so ably replaced by one Cody Franson(notes) in Nashville, who then proceeded to go farther than they ever have. But it must be something in the water up there that turns players into lamentable characters. Even after Hamhuis waxed so lyrical about how frightened he was of what concussions meant long term, there he was trying to combine his elbow with Dave Bolland's(notes) cerebellum after he had just returned from the same affliction. Must be what you make legal over there.
Keith Ballard(notes)? Ah, he was going to really add to things too, wasn't he? And I'll bet he did. No one attacks the press box spread like Keith Ballard. Everyone knows this.
What else can you learn? Your midseason acquisitions won't redefine the sport either. Oh you Canadian media, you try so hard. It's kind of adorable. Picking up Maxim Lapierre(notes), you made it seem like Guy Carbonneau was cloned and brought back to his younger years. And yet when the Ducks acquired him, it was considered a case of Anaheim just wanting yet another piece of trash. Hmmm. Chris Higgins(notes)? The man with a picture in the post office in New York and Montreal? He was the difference? God, that is some really good stuff you have in the bong, isn't it?
But there's so much more you can glean from this year, Nucks fans. The biggest lesson is that there is something as using up all your "Hockey Magic" too soon.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
Every Cup winner has it. Those moments where you know it's destined to be yours. You have to spread them out. But you couldn't do that, could you? Blew your wad too excitedly? We've heard you have that problem. After all the dives, and non-calls against, and the goals that went in off someone's body, and the non-suspensions, there was a moment when you should have known the well went dry.
You were too busy celebrating, but you could hear it: It was when Alex Burrows scored in OT in Game 2 of the Final. Because he shouldn't have been on the ice, and you knew it. You ignored it, but you knew. And when he scored, you could hear the savings account of karma or magic run dry. You were out. There was nothing left. And then the overage charges started when Aaron Rome(notes) hit Nathan Horton(notes) late enough to fit four Rene Rancourt fist-pumps in.
But there are other lessons to be learned. I know, you're getting dizzy now, but this could help. You can learn that your coach is an utter dunderhead.
Yes, he got you this far, but don't you think there's a reason that for the past three years your team has been wound so tight their collective colon is up around their eyeballs?
Your GM, slightly less of a dunderhead but far more of an air-raid siren, did his best to make this team Vigneault-proof. Almost pulled it off. While we're on the subject of Mike "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for these meddling refs" Gillis, you can't really complain about officiating when you have Raffi Torres(notes), Lapierre, Burrows and Bieksa roaming around. That's truly a case of the pot calling the kettle a cheat and a cheap-shot artist, and then punching him in the back of the head. The latter maneuver will be heretofore known as "The Canuck Handshake."
Hang on tight, we're almost done. All that caterwauling you did about Ryan Kesler's underperformance? Kesler was hurt you say? Then what does it say when he was the only Canuck during Game 7 who looked like he wasn't skating through birthsauce? And yet he could still only manage to fire it off the glass again. So excitable that one, must be contagious in B.C.
Which brings us to the Sedins.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
Have two players ever rung up a Hart Trophy and Hart Trophy nomination that are so hollow? They can have their own percussion section now, though they'd actually have to make contact with something to make that work.
But remember, if you absolutely need someone to dominate in the playoffs when you have a two-man advantage, the Sedins are….well, a candidate. Anything else, they can't help you. But hey, you're only paying them for three more seasons while they're on the wrong side of 30.
So where to now, Canucks? I imagine it involves overpaying Kevin Bieksa(notes) and watching him return to the yappy douchebag ways while he does the Dougie over to the penalty box repeatedly. It probably involves moving Christian Ehrhoff(notes) along while keeping Alex Edler, both of whom leave their feet on a check so much one wonders if Quinn The Eskimo just arrived. If he did, you'd only hurl debris at him anyway.
It probably involves a lot of wailing about if only Manny Malhotra(notes) had been around the whole playoffs, even though he was there the whole Final. Sharks fans can tell you with striking clarity what a difference he might have made. A healthy Hamhuis? Yes, assuredly one player could make up the minus-16 goal-difference you racked up in the Final. Except you'd have to pay that player $45 million a year plus virgins.
But what it should be is a realization that your best opportunity to bring the Cup home is gone, and isn't coming back. Both the Wings and Hawks have cap space to improve. The Sharks might finally figure out that tossing out the same nine forwards every year and expecting different results is what lands people in rubber rooms. Maybe Dean Lombardi in LA grows a pair and brings in another premier forward (sit down, Penner!) to complement the overworked Anze Kopitar(notes).
You'll still gather your points against what is a sitcom of a division, but elsewhere everyone is coming for you.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
In the first draft of this, I surmised that you should be happy you lost. Because winning would have given you an identity, and that's not what you are. You're Western Canada's faceless team. No history, no tradition, you're basically the Pacific Time Zone Senators.
Your other neighbors there in the West have Cups and Hall of Famers and classic uniforms. You? You have a statue of a guy *****ing about the refs immortalized. Oh, and Trevor Linden got a gate named after him. All your so-called rituals are stolen. Your Green Men? Taken from "It's Always Sunny." Your towels? Preceded in Pittsburgh by a decade. Your PA announcer's "Woo!" after goal announcements? Taken from your most recent conquerors. Your colors? Whaler-colors. Your original logo is the most perfect, non-descript in every way, giving no indication as to what you are or what you do.
And based on the damage around the city, apparently you've decided to adapt the Montreal method for dealing with loss. You couldn't even be original in your pathetic-ness. Maybe the problem is hitting the ice to U2. Are all your fans single women over 30? Apt that it's "Where The Streets Have No Name." They don't now, you burned all the signs.
But in the clear of the morning, I and all of us have come to realize that these playoffs did give you an identity. You are clearly marked out as a classless organization and fanbase, and a gutless team. That will go down in history.
Think about what you've accomplished. You couldn't rally the country of Canada around you in the least, and they'd get behind 13 hobos and a sloth if they thought it might bring back the Cup across the border for the first time since 1993.
Eulogy: Remembering the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
Moreover, you turned a giant swath of people into rooting for a Boston team. You know how hard that is? Most outside New England consider Boston sports to be the athletic world's shingles. Singularly unpleasant. And we all became fervent fans of theirs these past two weeks. Brad Marchand(notes) is a human nut-punch, and yet we were all leaping through the air like he was when he scored (no, not leaping like that, Alex and Christian).
I doubt there's been a team and fans that the rest of the hockey world took such glee in watching them fail. Now you can stop wondering why everyone hates you, like the kid in high school who ratted out the biggest party of the year to the faculty and wonders why he isn't a hero. You can stop invading our blogs to look for love, like your goalie who needed it from the opposing stopper.
(Hey Roberto, allow me to borrow a line from Tallahassee to chide you for your wanted affirmation from Timbo. Didn't you ever read "He's just not that into you"? You can't make yourself too available.)
When we're all done shaking our heads at your shameful, pathetic, and simply abhorrent displays after Game 7, everyone not in blue and green is going to be laughing at you. Laughing at your now-empty smugness. Laughing at your sense of entitlement. Laughing at your complaints. Laughing at your tears.
Laughter, laughter. All you will ever hear or see is laughter.
Laughter, laughter. Laughing at all your cries!

Jaromir Jagr confirmed to ESPN.com Friday that he's considering a return to the NHL if there's a team willing to take him.
Jagr's new agent, former NHL player Petr Svoboda, told ESPN.com Friday morning from Europe that a decision could be made this weekend.
"I've talked to Montreal, I've talked to Detroit, a few other teams called once they found out he was ready to go to [the] NHL," Svoboda told ESPN.com. "Hopefully we should have a better idea by tomorrow. There's quite a few teams that have interest. Jaromir feels he's NHL-ready again. I believe this might happen."
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland confirmed his team was in the mix.
"We have been contacted and we have interest. We're exploring our interest," Holland told ESPN.com Friday.
Holland did not elaborate, but salary-cap implications are at play here. With the retirement of Brian Rafalski and the cap going up again for next season, the Red Wings could have as much as $10 million to play with.

Lidstrom wins his 7th Norris trophy :)
LAS VEGAS — Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom tonight won his seventh Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, putting him within one of Bobby Orr’s record.
Lidstrom edged Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators, 736-727, in the closest race for first place since 1996, when Chicago's Chris Chelios finished five points ahead of Boston's Ray Bourque, 408-403. With Lidstrom, Weber and third-place Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins receiving similar first-place vote totals (Lidstrom 35, Weber 32, Chara 33) and the trio separated by just 48 points, this marks the tightest three-way race for the Norris Trophy since its introduction in 1954.

Re-alignment issues aside, I'm curious how they will justify the 7 division teams having a better shot of making it into the top 4 than the 8 division teams.
Why not just take the top 2 or top 3 from each division and have the remaining 4 or 2 spots be "wild cards" for the remaining best records within the conference?

The new NHL team in Winnipeg will go with what the city's original team was named -- the Winnipeg Jets, sources told ESPN.com Friday.
The team is expected to announce it Friday night at the NHL draft in St. Paul, Minn.
Ever since the announcement that the Atlanta Thrashers were moving to Winnipeg, fans have debated what to call the team. The overwhelming choice has been Jets -- what the team was called before it moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Coyotes. Other options included Winnipeg Falcons, Manitoba Falcons, and Manitoba Moose, which was the name of the AHL team there
Re-alignment issues aside, I'm curious how they will justify the 7 division teams having a better shot of making it into the top 4 than the 8 division teams.
Why not just take the top 2 or top 3 from each division and have the remaining 4 or 2 spots be "wild cards" for the remaining best records within the conference?
You could always contract Phoenix and Florida to make all 4 divisions have 7 teams. Then you could have a contraction draft to allow the remaining teams to pick up the talent. ;)

I heard Bettman is for expansion to 32 teams in the near future, not contraction.
I heard Bettman is for expansion to 32 teams in the near future, not contraction.
That's possibly the worst idea ever.
Although I don't mind Bettman's realignment plan (minus expansion), here's my take on ditching conferences altogther and picking 4 divisions. Top 16 teams by points, wins, h2h, etc make it into the playoffs. 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc. Home & home vs everyone, 2 x h&h for division, split up the rest of the games.
Here's my idea of the 4 divisions...
Great Lakes
BUF
CHI
CLB
DET
MIN
MTL
OTT
TOR
Western
ANA
CAL
EDM
LA
PHX
SJ
VAN
WIN
Atlantic
BOS
NJ
NYI
NYR
PHI
PIT
WAS
Southern
CAR
COL
DAL
FLA
NSH
STL
TB
Take a look at this fan-map. It's where I derived my divisions from. Note, Winnipeg is still listed as ATL and please forgive the stupid title, I didn't create it.

Not likely, but I think it would work well. Rivalries are there, travel would be reduced...a man can dream :r
I think a lot of the problem with aligning the NHL is that almost 3/4 of the teams are in the Eastern & Central timezones, and the West is geographically dispersed. Not to mention rivalries, original 6 considerations, and the fact Bettman is an idiot.

I hate the travel argument as I want to see more travel not less.
Part of my reason for not getting season tickets this year is I am done watching pacific teams 6 damn times each in one season. I get to see Eastern teams often once every 2 years and the Ducks too many damn times.
A balanced schedule would be nice.

Hawks trade Brower for a pick (I was sure he wasn;t going to be back), then shed 4.1 MIL is salary by trading Campbell to Tallon's Panthers for Olesz. A downgrade for sure, but between Troy, Brian and the salary cap bump, they have $12 MIL per year to lock up Patrick Sharp and sign some FAs.

Seto signed for 3 years Burns is a UFA after this season. Seto is only 24 also.

Reports: NHL to realign for 2012-13
ESPN.com news services
The return of the Winnipeg Jets to the NHL will create a ripple effect throughout the league with a dramatic realignment for the 2012-13 season as a result, multiple media outlets have reported.
Winnipeg, which is the new home of the relocated Atlanta Thrashers, will play the upcoming 2011-12 season in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division despite being 70 miles north of Minnesota.
The Jets' division features the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.
With Western Conference teams Detroit, Nashville and Columbus hoping to be relocated to the East, the NHL has opted to realign the entire league rather than shifting Winnipeg, according to the Sporting News.
The purveying plan seeks to divide the league into four divisions -- two with eight teams and two with seven teams. The plan will likely be finalized at December's Board of Governors meeting.
Commissioner Gary Bettman hinted at changes to come in his annual state-of-the-NHL address before the Stanley Cup finals opener earlier this month.
"All those clubs need an opportunity to be heard," Bettman said. "That's a process we'll go through the first half of next season, looking at the issues that clubs want to raise, looking at various possibilities, and trying to figure out what will make the most sense moving forward."

Wings sign Mike Commodore, not going to replace Rafalski by any means but adds a D guy to the 5th or 6th spot. Looks like we'll probably end up throwing money at Tomas Kaberle, Bryan McCabe, or Ian White. We'll see what happens. We resigned Jonathon Ericsson which I'm not too excited about. He's getting a huge raise and I think he regressed last season. Expectations are high for him to move up in the D rotation.
Brad Richards also finalized his final 4, no winged wheel for him but I don't think there was ever interest on his side.

I like the White signing, but this Commodore is signing is an interesting one. See below...
http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/07/red_wings_sign_defenseman_mike.html
Interesting signing, since Commodore had issues with Red Wings coach Mike Babcock when they were together in the Anaheim organization in 2003, publicly ripping him in January 2009, when he played for the Blue Jackets.
"Mike Babcock was without a doubt an obstacle in my career," Commodore told the Columbus Post-Dispatch at the time. "I wanted to prove him wrong, I'm not going to lie. I used him as big-time motivation. I thought he put his best foot forward to bury me."
Babcock said his only issue with Commodore back then was his conditioning.
Apparently they're both over it now...
http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/07/mike_commodore_jumps_at_chance.html
"It was something I thought about a little bit (before deciding)," Commodore said. "That happened a long time ago. It’s water under the bridge. I’d like another opportunity to play for (Babcock). He was a first-year coach in the NHL, I was trying to break into the league. We’ve both come a long ways."
Babcock said on Friday that his only issue with Commodore in 2002 was his conditioning level.
"I didn’t think, fitness-wise, he was ready to play in the NHL," Babcock said. "I never thought about (Commodore’s comments) for a second. He’s a big boy. I am, too."
Commodore and Babcock talked on Friday, and the coach said he is excited.
"We had him earmarked for two weeks," Babcock said. "We like his size and he’s physical. He’s a perfect fit for our team. He’ll support his teammates, he’ll work hard on people.
"If he’s paired with (young) Jakub Kindl, he’ll help him."
Personally I don't know much about him. Seems like he underachieved in Columbus, thus the buyout. They say he is a big, right-handed, stay at home d-man for only $1 million for 1 year. I hope it works out.

Yeah I think you dont forget stuff like that so easy as a player. When you use someone as motivation thats saying a lot. I think there both professionals and as long as he plays well he has no concerns, but if not it could get ugly.
Are there any rumors in Wings land about a big trade? Im not a big Wings guy its well documented, but I was really expecting more of an effort to rebuild. I know this years free agent market was weak, but White who I am a big fan off was it and thaf was replacing Rafalski. Intertesting insight on the West from Tim Sassone. Forgive the Blackhawk bias, he is a Chicago writer.
Now that most of the dust has settled from free agency, who is the team to beat in the Western Conference in 2011-12?
Take your pick from these five: The Blackhawks, San Jose, Detroit, Vancouver and Los Angeles.
As it stands today, the Hawks are as good as anyone in the West and might be the cream of the crop.
1. Blackhawks
There's no question the Hawks are going to miss Brian Campbell's speed and ability to move the puck from the back end, but Nick Leddy gets the chance to fill the void while there's pressure on Niklas Hjalmarsson to take his game to the next level.
The Hawks addressed the need for size and toughness in free agency with the additions of Steve Montador, Sean O'Donnell, Jamal Mayers and Dan Carcillo, while Andrew Brunette should fit nicely on the second line.
The Hawks still have a ton of skill up front and the 1-2 punch of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook anchoring the defense.
2. San Jose
Sharks general manager Doug Wilson made two nice trades with Minnesota, getting Martin Havlat for the underachieving Dany Heatley and underrated defenseman Brent Burns for Devon Setoguchi.
A motivated Havlat could make Sharks fans forget all about Heatley, who was a playoff bust.
The Sharks lost some grit in Mayers and Ben Eager and let Ian White go as a free agent, but Wilson has brought in center Michal Handzus and defenseman Jim Vandermeer.
3. Los Angeles
If the Kings were lacking leadership they have all kinds of it now after trading for Mike Richards and signing Simon Gagne as a free agent.
They had to trade Wayne Simmonds and top prospect Brayden Schenn to Philadelphia to get Richards and lost Handzus, but the Kings are a team that now has a lot of the pieces in place for a deep playoff run.
4. Detroit
Never count the Red Wings out of anything.
The Wings saw defenseman Brian Rafalski retire, but they signed defensemen Mike Commodore and White as free agents.
Detroit still is loaded offensively, led by the great Pavel Datsyuk, and Nicklas Lidstrom is coming back for another year at age 41. GM Ken Holland still has plenty of money to spend and may be looking to make a trade.
5. Vancouver
It's hard to see where the Canucks have improved since losing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to Boston.
Gone as free agents are defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and rugged forwards Raffi Torres, Tanner Glass and Mark Rypien.
GM Mike Gillis did sign center Marco Sturm, but that's it. The Canucks still need to find a top-six forward somewhere and more jam.
The rest
• Columbus: The Blue Jackets made some bold moves and should be much better with the additions of Jeff Carter's 40 goals and defenseman James Wisniewski's 40 assists.
• Minnesota. The team that couldn't score went out and acquired Heatley and Setoguchi from the Sharks. Which Heatley shows up in the Twin Cities likely will determine if the Wild is better. Losing Burns hurts, though.
• Nashville. How are the Predators better after letting Joel Ward, Steve Sullivan, Marcel Goc and J.P. Dumont walk as free agents while adding only Niclas Bergfors and Zach Stortini? They aren't.
• Phoenix. The Coyotes always could depend on goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to win games, but not anymore. He's in Philadelphia now, and also gone are heart-and-soul guys Ed Jovanovski and Vern Fiddler. Mike Smith is the new No. 1 goalie.
• Calgary. The Flames traded defenseman Robin Regehr and added nobody. Good luck with that.
• Anaheim. Like the Flames, the Ducks have stood pat, but they still should be right in the thick of the playoff chase with a solid roster.
• Dallas. The Stars lost Brad Richards, who can't be replaced. Adding Michael Ryder, Fiddler, Jake Dowell and Sheldon Souray won't come close. They're probably not a playoff team again.
• Colorado. What are the Avs doing anyway? They added goalies Semyon Varlamov and J.S. Giguere along with defenseman Jan Hejda. That's not enough to make them a playoff team.
• Edmonton. Adding center Eric Belanger, Eager, defenseman Cam Barker and Darcy Hordichuk brings grit, but it will be another year of waiting on the kids for Oilers fans.
• St. Louis. The Blues finally got active Wednesday, signing center Jason Arnott and winger Jamie Langenbrunner — solid pickups after the additions of journeymen Kent Huskins, Scott Nichol and backup goalie Darren Elliott.

The lack of news on Stamkos is disturbing. I think the Lightning are dropping the ball, or puck, on this one. :td

Yes he would but... you would have to give up your first round draft picks for the next four years as compensation.
If this don't smack of collusion, I don't know what does?

Actually, it seems that the Lightning are going to match any offer sheet thrown his way. They haven't made any huge signings and have let a few players slip away. So, as of now, I am pretty confident that Stamkos will still be a Bolt next year and probably many years after that.

Even though I have never been a Wings fan, I will miss Cornelius!
Kudos to Drapes. Class act all the way. He also personified the blue-collar attitude this city loves and embraces. He might not have been the most skilled NHL player but, he worked his tail off and never hesitated to sacrifice himself to benefit the team.

Draper always kind of reminded me of Terry the marionette on Pee Wee's Playhouse. ;)
Enjoy the retirement, Mr. Draper.

LOS ANGELES -- New York Rangers forward Sean Avery has been arrested in California after police claim he shoved an officer at his Hollywood Hills home.
Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Jorge Pardo tells City News Service that a neighbor's noise complaint sent police to the home at about 1 a.m. local time Friday.
Pardo said Avery answered the front door, shoved an officer and slammed the door but cooperated when officers knocked a second time.
The officer wasn't injured.
Avery, 31, was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer. He remained jailed Friday morning on $20,000 bail.

My hockey world is caving in. WTF is going to happen to the Isles? I hope they move to Brooklyn or Queens but I get the sinking feling they will either be sent north to Quebec or disbanded in a few years. FML

I sure hope they stay close to their current fanbase, moving them would be a shame.

Yeah its always weird to see a team with a true history facing movement. Almost like if you won a few cups movement should be much harder.

You live that close to Davison, MI?
I have prior engagements of things before work and work that day or I'd be all over this like white on rice. I heard no photo ops though. My brother and I used to play roller hockey and street hockey with Thomas growing up.

Yessir. I'm 5 miles south of Lapeer, just off M-24. No photo ops might seal it for me. That's relly my biggest motivation for going is to get my pic with the cup and possibly with Thomas.

I do agree that being disbanded is highly unlikely but if they move to Hamilton or Quebec it might as well be the same as far as I am concerned. The Isles are a strong young team just a few years out of Stanley Cup potential. Kind of like the Nords were when they got moved, Hmmmm! Milbury is still a douce!!
