FIRST: That is why I love hockey...what an amazing game.

SECOND: Congrats to the Tampa Bay Lightning. With a 1st year GM (Yzerman) and 1st year coach (Boucher), 10 of their 20 players new to the team, and without a trip to the playoffs in several seasons, they go to game 7 of the Eastern Finals. They should be a force to reckon with again next season.

THIRD: Steve Stamkos. That is a freaking hockey player.

FOURTH: Nathan Horton...first time in the playoffs in his career. Two Game 7 GWG. Wow.

FINALLY: Let's Go Bruins! Bring that Cup back to Beantown!! :wnr

Great game last night, let me say I am not a Claude Julien fan and want his head on a stick.
Claude did a masterful job with personnel match ups and took ice time away from non performers instead of same old, same old, man is he a stubborn guy.

The B's aren't going to roll over for Vancouver. The Canucks are going to have to deal with Chara and Seidenberg, Thomas has never lost to Vancouver with two shutouts and a one goal game.

Should be physical series if the B's keep the penalties to a minimum, I like the Bruins in six.-(P

I can't believe there wasn't a single penalty called in this game. Talk about skewing results. One team is 8% the PP and the other is almost guaranteed to score. I am sure that is why Boucher was pissed when the call was reversed on his own player.

The ref's don't blow whistles in game sevens, yeah they let a few go,it was a clean hard fought game.
What is in the past is in the past there is no guarantees that Tampa would have scored on the PP, for the most part they were shut down the whole series.
Tampa was lucky the score was just one they were dominated the whole game.

I was looking at the Stanley Cup Finals Schedule and the NBA Finals Schedule, and there is a very good chance that the NBA could finish before the NHL this year.
If there is a sweep in both leagues or both leagues go to a game 7 or even if they go an equal amount of games to close the series the NBA will finish first. I don't think this has ever happened before.
I think this sucks! I don't think it's good for the Sport of Hockey in anyway
It goes way to late in the year, and with baseball in full swing and going up directly against the NBA finals, people can loose interest.
The five games the Bruins played in April to close out the season took almost 2 weeks.
They could find a way to move those games into the regular season and close the season out by the end of March or the first couple of days in April not the middle of April.:2

I mean the NBA Starts a month after the NHL, they Play the same amount of games and hockey takes longer.:bh

What do you think??

Atlanta has officially sent it's NHL franchise North for a second time. I wonder if Winterpeg will choose to revive the Jet's name or go with a new one.

I for one would love to see the Jet's return! At least the teams have both gone to Canadian cities.

If it had been Phoenix moving back to Winnipeg then I'm sure it would have been the Jet's without question, but given that the Coyotes are staying put are the Thrashers really the Jets? That'd be like moving the Hurricanes or Blue Jackets to Quebec City and renaming them the Nordiques despite the fact that the Avalanche are still around. Seems a bit uncomfortable to me.

True North also owns Vancouver's farm team the Manitoba Moose which already has a strong following in Winnipeg so they may choose to transfer that name to the NHL and sell of the Moose without a name and let that new owner (looking to be St. John's NL where ironically Moose would be a prefect name to connect local culture) re-brand that team for the local market.

Ultimately True North may not have any say, they need the fans support to make this acquisition work and the citizen's of Winnipeg have a deep attachment to the old Jet's name and franchise.

Joe I agree this is crazy. Taking a whole week break just raises eyebrows when its not needed. Well the Canucks I am sure wanted it as apparently eirhoff and Rome will get back and heard rumors of Manny. Dont think the Bs needed it.

Winnipeg is now the new smallest market in thr NHL this just seems to have the potential to backfire. An interesting thing is they are already placing residents in an interesting situation which apparently Minnesota did also. All seats require atleast a 3 year contract some a 5 year. The lower seats 129 in are demanding a 5 year commitment. Which is about 30 grand. Now given nobody gets one seat you are looking at a 60k guarantee for the next 5 years. This just seems like a bad sign already. I am sure that doesnt include a price freeze so you will end up over 60 for two in the end. Another interesting thing which I think is a sign of potential issues is while the lower seats are cheap compared to other rinks the cheapest upper seat is more then most arenas. Now they are asking for a 5 year commitment on those suprising cheap lower seats. I just see people being locked in and the team raising prices to be consistent with other teams and people getting pissed.

http://driveto13.com/price.php

Edit: holy crap 64.00 for third deck center area which is pretty wide. That pricing structure is pretty bad on a lot of seats outside of a few teams. I never thought san jose had great prices untill now. My seats would be almost $20 more per game.

Robert, I have no dog in this fight as I am neither a Bruins nor a Bolts fan. In facty, I like the Thrashers better than both of them.

But the Bruins players gooned it up? Right...they are players, and it is hockey. Fans don't get the right to throw stuff at the players for the price of admission. :2

Can't we all just throw octopi and get along?

I believe a city have to meet season ticket criteria before the NHL will even consider them, so Winnipeg must have shown them something.

That's it? Wow, that pricing is a bargain for a Canadian market team. The equivalent upper bowl seat in Rogers Arena would be $85 for a game that no one cares about, $110 - $120 for a premium game like Original 6 or divisional rival. Lower bowl tickets run $110 - $200+.

I don't understand why anyone would want to move a team to Winnipeg?
This franchise is doomed from the start?

That franchise has a better chance than most of the struggling Southern US markets. Most market studies have shown that you need a min pop. of 800,000 in a Canadian market to support an NHL team. Winnipeg meets that and, despite not having had an NHL franchise for 15 years still has some of the most loyal fan base in the league. It'll never be a big market like a Montreal, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, NY, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, etc but it'll more than support itself.

A large part of what drove the Jet's out in the mid-90's was the cost of replacing an ancient stadium that no longer met NHL standards combined with a weak CDN dollar vs player's salaries paid in USD and a run away salary market plus a weak economy. None of those issues are factors anymore.

The long layover has been very frustrating, I think it's mostly trying to work around scheduling conflicts with other events in the 2 rinks. I'm betting there was also a component of wanting to make sure that the Eastern winner had enough rest to make it an entertaining series. Yet again the West Coast gets screwed by the NHL's slavish devotion to the TV market in the Eastern time zone, 5PM PDT starts for all games is BS... God forbid someone in the east might loose some beauty sleep from having to watch a hockey game that starts later than 8PM. All that said, can't wait to get this series rolling tomorrow night!

lol! Campbell would have recused himself from the Finals anyways given that his son is playing. In reality he's being forced out because the old boys club is afraid there will be an incident involving his son that will result in the NHL having egg on it's face, that and they're tired of the fact that his Spinning Wheel of Randomized Justice has become the laughing stock of the game (if not professional sport in general).

The Canucks only had a long break because we didn't need 7 games to advance to the Final... and you forgot about Malhotra ;)

Bah, you want to engage in post whistle scrums and face washes then complain that you think you were bitten after you shoved your own finger into the other guys mouth? Seriously? What's next, slapping yourself in the face with your opponents hand to draw a roughing penalty like that infamous Brazilian soccer league clip?

If the league wasn't wiling to suspend either Torres or Eager for their dangerous hits in earlier rounds I can't imagine that Burrows is in any danger of a suspension in the Finals for an alledged bite that can't even really be seen in the replays unless you want to see it.

Great game, could have easily gone either way although I think Thomas was entirely responsible for giving the Bruins that chance. Should make for a great series!

My thoughts on last nights game Boychuck is killing us, he been on the ice for the last seven goals scored against us and has been responsible for all of them.
Julien has got to get Recchi off the PP he has 0.0 points in 19 games and skates like he has snow shoes on,he has to give that ice time to Seguin.
The forwards have got to get in front of the net and make things happen.
Overall the team has got to cut down on the turn overs and not get caught out of position.
The B's got to keep up the heavy checking and not get caught up in a chippie game.

What's to defend? If Burrows had intentionally gone out of his way to bite Bergeron, or even initiated contact then I'd be right there alongside you guys calling for him to be thrown under the bus... just like I was calling for Torres to be suspended for his hit on Seabrook in the first round. The simple fact of the matter is that Bergeron came in as the 3rd player, started an afterwhistle scrum with Burrows and in the course of that pushing and shoving Bergeron put his finger in Burrows mouth, not vice versa. Burrows got an extra minor on the play and the Bruins failed to capitalize on it. Period. End of story.

The big things the Bruins need to do on the power play is improve their puck speed and get Charra back on the point where he can do some damage. Look at that 5 on 3 last night. Every single time a Bruin got a pass they stopped for a second, almost like they were trying to think of what they had to do next. It allowed the Canucks penalty killers to readjust the triangle and re-setup. While the Canucks never really got their passing game in gear last night look at their power plays in comparison, the puck is almost always in movement passing all over the ice. It doesn't allow the PK to setup and they end up chasing the play instead of controlling it.

As for Charra in front of the net, yes he's a big body but Luongo plays so far back in the net now that Charra's not really effective at screening him. He's also so tall that Luongo just has to drop into a low butterfly and he's know only peering around Charra's legs instead of his torso. Charra doesn't have the tipping ability of a Lucic or other natural forward, he's simply too tall and gangly for close quarter rebound scrambles and most importantly he gets out of the way of every shot which means Luongo gets line of sight. If he's back on the point he's either going to have a valid scoring chance or at the very least put some hurt on the Vancouver shot blockers... and given that 2 of Vancouver's 4 top scorers are also our top shot blockers that's always a good play from the Boston perspective.

The other big thing the Bruins need to adapt to is the speed of counterattack from the Canucks. Neutral zone turnovers killed the Sharks and they did the same to the Bruins last night, every scoring chance Vancouver had when they finally started playing their game in the 3rd was off a turnover and counterattack.

From Vancouver's perspective they just need to keep exploiting their strengths, speed and depth. I was amazed at how much latitude Charra allowed them last night, I'd expect that to change on Sat. They also have to start shooting more and positioning for the rebounds Thomas is well known for instead of trying these pretty passing plays to catch him out of position. While that does work, obviously, it's not the way to beat him.

I think these games are all going to be very close unless either Thomas or Luongo has one of their meltdown games. If Luongo does have one, and I fully expect he will, I really hope Vigneault has the sense to pull him quickly and let Schneider in to help salvage the situation.

Seriously? Come on. Yes Bergeron put his hand in his face, but Burrows clearly chomps down on his finger. It was a bush league thing to do. Burrows kept it going by grabbing bergerons face guard.

That is a matter of perception and quite frankly it's something that is coloured by personal opinions. The Canuck haters are always going to see that as intentional, and that's fine... but it doesn't really make it any closer to being reality.

There were no haters in the videos I posted. Cherry and the others have picked the Canucls. You cant break out the weakass everyones against us. Everyone saw the same thing. A player with a history of biting and hair pulling doing it again. Lets be honest it was a bit¢h move. Men dont bite and pull hair in a fight. Burrows does. I dont care if someone stuck their hand in my mouth. Im not going cannibal unless I am in fear of my life. It was a bush bit¢h move and I dont care if a Shark did it I would say the same. You cant allow biting. He must be suspended on principal. He needs to learn a lesson especially because its not his first time. Dude he bite someone. Thats disgusting.

LEAGUE SAYS BURROWS WILL NOT BE SUSPENDED FOR BITING INCIDENT

Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows will not be suspended for the alleged biting incident that took place between him and Boston's Patrice Bergeron during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday.

NHL senior vice-president of hockey operations Mike Murphy announced the decision in a statement on Thursday.

"After reviewing the incident, including speaking with the on-ice officials, I can find no conclusive evidence that Alex Burrows intentionally bit the finger of Patrice Bergeron."

The incident occurred during a scrum at the end of the first period. While a linesman was trying to break up some pushing and shoving, Bergeron's hand ended up near Burrows' face and the Canucks' forward appeared to bite down on a finger of Bergeron's glove.

Bergeron said that his finger was cut after the incident.

Like I said, if this was an intentional or blatant bite then I'd be all over issuing fines and suspensions to Burrows. There is no real proof other than Bergeron's word that Burrows bit him, all the video reply shows is Bergeron shoving his finger in Burrows mouth and Burrows turning his head away. That is why the league isn't pursuing it... there's nothing to pursue.

The hair pulling in the Chicago series a couple years back was a bit¢h move, no question. This? Come on. Tell you what, unless it's to induce vomiting to clear poison, any man that tries to shove his fingers into another man's mouth shouldn't expect to get them back at all :2

Mike's (Ahbroody's) favorite Red Wing's color commentator is getting some major kudos; will be inducted into the Hockey Hall Of Fame...

Red Wings TV analyst Mickey Redmond will receive Foster Hewitt Award

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/06/red_wings_tv_analyst_mickey_re.html

DETROIT -- When Mickey Redmond’s promising playing career was cut short because of back problems, it opened the door to a long and rewarding stint in the broadcast booth.

Redmond, the color analyst for the Detroit Red Wings, has been entertaining and enlightening hockey fans for more than three decades with his enthusiastic style and colorful phrases, termed "Mickeyisms."

On Thursday, the Hockey Hall of Fame announced that Redmond will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

Redmond will receive the award at a luncheon on Nov. 14 as part of this year’s Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in Toronto.

"I’m almost overwhelmed," Redmond said. "My phone’s been ringing off the hook. The more people talk about it, you get an understanding of what it means."

Redmond, 63, started his broadcasting career in 1979 with the Red Wings. After a five-year stint on Hockey Night in Canada, he returned to Detroit in 1986. Since 1997, he has worked with play-by-play man Ken Daniels on Fox Sports Detroit. He also has worked national telecasts for Fox Sports, ABC, ESPN and USA Network.

Redmond said it means a lot to him to be recognized for giving back to the sport. His late parents, Eddie and May, were heavily involved in the game. Eddie Redmond played semipro hockey with Jean Beliveau and the Quebec Aces. Mickey’s brother, Dick, was a defenseman who spent 13 seasons in the NHL, primarily with Chicago and Boston.

"The Redmond family are hockey lifers," Redmond said. "For the Redmond family to be able to contribute back to hockey is special to me."

Redmond played on two Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Montreal Canadiens (1968 and ’69) before being traded to Detroit, where his career blossomed. He was the first player in franchise history to score 50 goals, netting 51 in 1972-73 and 52 the following season.

Recurring back pain forced him to retire prematurely at age 29 in 1976.

In 1979, he started working Red Wings games for ON-TV, a subscription service that was a precursor to cable television.

"In a strange way (the injury) opened the door for this to take place," Redmond said. "They said, ‘Here’s a microphone, go do what you do.’ It went from there. It’s been an amazing 32 years."

Growing up in Peterborough, Ontario, he watched the Toronto Maple Leafs and Canadiens on CBC, listening to legendary voices Foster Hewitt and Danny Gallivan. He eventually worked with broadcasting giants such as Gallivan, Dick Irvin and Bob Cole.

Redmond credits his father for helping him develop a sharp analytical eye for the game.

"Dad’s advice was "don’t let (a bad or uneventful) game drag you down, look harder to find its greatness,’ " Redmond said. "I tried to carry that advice with me. I’m very blessed to do what I do."

Health issues forced Redmond to reduce his travel schedule several years ago. He still works 75 percent of the games and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

"After 44 years in the game, this is as good as it gets for me," Redmond said. "As long as I’m having fun, I’ll do it as long as I can."

The Foster Hewitt Memorial Award is named in honor of the late "Voice of Hockey" in Canada. It was first presented in 1984 by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association in recognition of members of the radio and television industry who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and to hockey.

Congrats Mickey!

Honestly, I know plenty of Leafs fans who like him, despite the rivalry. Plus I know at least one Hawks fan (see above) who likes him. Obviously Mickey pulls for the Wings, but he doesn't sugar-coat it when they are getting outplayed, outworked, etc. He also gives credit where credit is due, even if it is to the opposing team. He does get critical of the refs, but for both sides. He likes it when the refs let 'em play. He's a big fan of self-policing amongst the players. So muchs so that I've heard him on countless occasions say the way to prevent high-stick injuries is not better helmets and visors, but the opposite; take the helmets and visors away. I see the logic, but I'm not sure if it would fly in today's NHL. But I digress....

Cool story!

EDMONTON, Alberta -- This was one nifty assist by an NHL player.

Edmonton Oilers center Gilbert Brule stopped this week to pick up a most unlikely hitchhiker -- rock star Bono.

The U2 frontman and his assistant were walking Tuesday in West Vancouver, British Columbia, when they got caught in the rain.

Fortunately for them, Brule and his girlfriend, Kelsey Nichols, were on their way to take their German shepherd, Bella, to a park.

Brule had to convince Nichols, who was driving, to pull over. "I didn't want to stop, but they waved and G yelled, 'That's Bono,' " Nichols told the Edmonton Journal Wednesday night. "I didn't believe him so I kept driving."

Bono and his assistant hopped in the back with Bella. To thank them, he offered Brule and his girlfriend backstage passes for the U2 concert Wednesday night at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.

The couple sold their tickets to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals between Boston and Vancouver, took a flight back to Edmonton and went to the show with Brule's mom.

"I like people who play ice hockey -- they stop for hitchhikers. I know this from experience," Bono told the concert crowd.

"I was hitchhiking in Vancouver yesterday, actually I was! And this guy and his girlfriend picked me up. He was cool, an ice hockey player, his name was Gilbert Brule as it happens, I'm so grateful I've decided I want to be Gilbert Brule."

With hockey on his mind, Bono compared his bandmates to former Oiler greats, calling The Edge, "The Wayne Gretzky of U2."

"We go to walk our dog and Bono ends up in our car," Brule told the Journal.

The 24-year-old Brule missed half of this season because of illnesses, intestinal problems, a sprained ankle and a concussion.

I dont know, but this years playoffs I thought Drew was a Wings announcer at times. He called Datsyuk the greatest player in the game multiple times using words like amazing incredible. He repeatedly kissed Zs arse and Homers as well. He was also very complimentary of the kings all series. When the Sharks lose he calls them out. I dont think there style is nearly the same outside of them both being color guys. During the season drew is always discussing issues the team is having. He cant blast them any worse then he does I dont think.

Fair enough. Tbh I often listen to the radio feed even when at home as Baker suprises me at how he calls out players. Sometimes I think they have to be pissed at him, but given his importance in team history I think he is untouchable. Plus he plays nice to the players face.

I wonder if Quebec City is the destination Phoenix is bound for. That and Hamilton are the 2 main city's being thrown about and frankly I can't see either the Leafs or Sabres organization being very happy about Hamilton coming in as that would draw from their support zones. Can you think of any other possible US cities that Phoenix might go to?

Geoff, I think you will be having a party in Vancouver next week...enjoy. :)

Obviously I hope so, but we're only up 2 - 0 and both were very close hard fought games that could have just as easily gone Boston's way. Not to mention that Boston was also down 2 - 0 to Montreal so they've already don't it once this year (though Montreal and Vancouver are miles apart in terms of calibre), it's way too early to tell. If they split in Boston, I really can't see a Vancouver sweep, then I'll start getting my hopes up but for now I'm just cautiously optimistic. If they split in Boston I think the Vancouver will win at home in Game 5, if they return to Vancouver 2 - 2 then it's going the full 7 and who knows what the outcome will be.

BTW, the Bono story you posted earlier also has both Bruins and Canucks connections. Brule played on the Vancouver Giants with Lucic and was traded from Columbus to Edmonton for Torres which started his eventual trek to the Canucks

Given that Winnipeg remains in the same division for next season, I would expect the divisional "imbalance" will be resolved by moving Phoneix or Columbus into both the NE and Quebec City at the same time that Winnipeg joins the NW. As little sense as it makes having Detroit in the Western Conf given that it's an eastern city I can't really see the league upsetting those rivalries now. There's already lots of Original 6 matchups in the Eastern Conf, having 2 of those teams in the west is better for business.

That is most likely the biggest reason it WON'T happen. I'm praying it will despite the business factor. Not to come off cocky, but it is said that the Wings are a big draw for western conference teams.

Besides joining the other 4 original 6 teams in the East, the best part would be no playoff games starting at 10:00 PM local time. It sucks having a 1 hour drive to work, having to start at 7:00, and your team's playoff game doesn't end until 1:00 AM ( or later if it goes into OT). Once in a while isn't so bad, but if it's week after week in the Pacific Time zone, it gets real old real fast.

That said, the existing rivalries can be kept alive if the NHL would just adopt the NBA schedule. It garauntees a home & away against every team in the league. I've posted the specifics before.

Ahbroody
06-06-2011, 10:31 AM
If they dont move Phoenix I still say its Nashville.
Nashville is one state away and if Det can be in the West, Nashville can be in the East.

Moving the Wings requires a team from each Eastern Conf to move and teams will fight like hell over that. It would kill the Bs Habs likely also, which is something the league surely doesnt want. Nashville just makes the most sense if they dont move the Yotes. I dont see them going to any U.S. city. They will want a sure market like Quebec or possibly Hamilton.

If the league would just adopt a balanced schedule I agree this all becomes a non argument largely. I think it would help many teams sell more as well.

All of the better teams are big draws where ever they play, people will make more of an effort to go to a game involving good teams because it's better entertainment. The same can be said for the Original 6 even when they are in rebuilding phases or are having off seasons. It's hardly specific to the Wings and I really don't see how/why you'd think is a reason for the NHL to keep the Wings in the West. Especially given that the West already has a larger percentage of high profile talent and the most of the best team in the league already.

I certainly agree on the balanced schedule though. Frankly I'd like to do away with the rigid conference structure altogether for the reasons I mentioned earlier in this thread. It produces artificially inflated/deflated point totals based on the relative strength of a team's division (Vancouver was a classic case this year). It's also ridiculous when you have the #9 and #10 teams in conference missing the playoffs when they both have better records than the #8 team in the other conference.

According to the attendance numbers for this past season Wings sold out 99.8% of their road games, highest in the league by over 2% (ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance/_/sort/awayAvg)). I would say that's significant enough to say that is a reason to keep them in the West.

We should start a movement to get the NHL to change their schedule to be exactly like the NBA's.

Fans have been complaining for years. The owners dont want it. More cost associated from more travel was a rumor. I think thats crap as I think the attendance will improve. I am damn tired of so many games against the pacific. Its tired and I know people who dont care to go to the games as there are so many. Think I am only doing a 10 pack this season. And wont be going to any pacific division games. One things for sure the league doesnt care what the fans want as every survey says people are tired of this format.

Wow, hopefully Horton is ok after that hit. Not technically a Rule 48, and didn't appear to be intent to injure, but definitely deserving of the match penalty and possibly a suspension. Hopefully that kind of hit will fall under Rule 48 next year!!

Tom, got that Luongo pick handy? What an absolute disgrace from the Canucks :td :td

I am left to wonder if Claude Julien is a man of his word though. Given that he was telling the media that any players of his that engaged in the LaPierre's behaviour would be benched I'm sure that we'll see Lucic and Recchi (or was it Bergeron) benched for next game right just to prove he's not a hypocrit right? Somehow I think we can expect to see both in the lineup next game.

Good win for the Bruins, they definitely deserved it tonight!

Edit: Thomas' hit on Sedin. Don't have a problem with it at all, but I think that if the rules allow goalies to throw body checks in the blue paint they have to be considered fair game instead of protected commodities when they're in the white... just like any other player :2

Yes and no. In a close game that's still being fought I completely agree, in a game like that one that's a foregone conclusion you want to make sure there are no incidents that cause injuries and affect future games. Doubly true in the playoffs and especially in The Finals.

.... or just do it the way the Celts did, nominate a champion from each team and stand em up at centre ice. Torres vs Lucic would be epic. Charra vs anyone would be a rout!

That'd be the one. When Luongo shows up to play you get the first 2 games of the series or the Gold Medal game. When his alter ago Luigi shows up you get tonite. That said, the 2 first were not Luongo's fault and the Canucks as a team didn't give him any support for the last 2 periods but the last 6 were saves that Luongo on a normal night should have had.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo-C8mW9A58

Paille got 4 games for this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5ggHK-FDRY
I fail to see any difference in the hits. If anything Hortons was worse he had passed the puck well before the hit where Sawada was still reaching for it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUYqTE3cnuQ

Looks dirty to me and exactly the thing the league says they want out. To me it deserves the same as Paille. If no suspension I think it will really call the leagues motives into question especially given Burrows recieved nothing for biting. No one will argue Boston has not given out more then enough suspect hits this year and isnt a clean team, but two wrongs dont make it right and that was dirty.

mithrilG60
06-07-2011, 01:27 AM
There was lots of dirty to go around, Burrows hack on Thomas that started that whole scrum was a response to the Bruins, especially Chara, slashing the back of every blue and green leg in reach at every opportunity, squirting water off the bench, etc. As soon as the Bruins want to stop their crap then we can all sh!t on the Canucks for their's. Until then it's playoff hockey, get over it.

You fail to see the difference between those hits? You mean other than one was a lateral elbow to the head from the blindside and the other one, although late and interference, was a straight north-south check that caught a player with his head turned? Come on, be realistic.

I'm not justifying Rome's hit. He should definitely should get a couple games for it, especially given that it did injure. That said I wouldn't class that a dirty hit, or intent to injure, but it was way too late and it was to the head. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him get the rest of the series. All depends on what the doctors say about Horton's condition tomorrow morning.

Ahbroody
06-07-2011, 01:52 AM
Like I said I dont think the Bs are a clean team no one could argue that. I dont agree with your logic that because of slashing people should take head shots.

Apparently you dont see that in both cases a late hit was delivered to the head to a player without the puck and not expecting the hit. The puck was well gone. If Rome was not trying to injure then what ws he doing. The head down argument is used when a player has the puck and is looking down. He doesnt have the puck and isnt looking down so I guess we should try to use the term correctly no?
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b358/ahbroody/Rome1.png
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b358/ahbroody/rome3.png

To me and a lot of others its a late hit to the head on an unsuspecting player without the puck. Thats dirty. He left his feet as well.

mithrilG60
06-07-2011, 02:13 AM
You're combining two different points, I probably didn't separate them out enough. The slashing and whatnot was a reference to Lucic taunting Burrows in that scrum. The scrum resulted from Burrows slashing at Thomas' glove hand as the play died which was in turn a response to all the other slashing. It had nothing to do with the Rome-Horton hit as it was in the 3rd and well after that fact. My only issue with Lucic's finger pointing at Burrows is the hypocrisy of Julien calling out the Canucks for LaPierre's taunting in Game 2 only to have not one but two Bruins do exactly what Julien said he'd never allow his players to ever do because it denigrates the game.

Intent to injure? We obviously have very different definitions of that. Eager trying to run Sedin through the boards from behind in retaliation for Marlowe picking a fight with Bieska only to have his arse handed to him... that's intent to injure. Unlike that hit, or the Paille one you brought up, Rome's hit would have been completely legal if he'd completed it 2 seconds before and if Horton had been ready for it (ie. had his head up instead of watching his pass) then it wouldn't have caught him in the head or resulted in him hitting his head off the ice.

There's no disputing that Rome is guilty of a late hit and therefore interference. Given the severity of the result of the hit there's no questioning that it called for a match penalty and I'm sure it will result in a suspension. All well deserved I say. Intent to injure? Please. IF that was the case his elbow would have come up and/or he would have actually left his feet into the hit (and not after the impact in reaction to the force of the hit as the replay clearly shows is the case). Rome is hardly known for being a Matt Cooke type of player, why would he pick Game 3 of the Finals when the Canucks were well ahead in the series to start? No, there was no intent to injure... just a really stupid decision that unfortunately resulted in a player getting injured.

The head down argument is used when a player has the puck and is looking down.

No. The head down argument is used when a player either has the puck, is expecting the puck or has just released the puck and is following the puck instead of concentrating on opposing players. As much as Horton should have had his head up and in the play, it doesn't provide any justification for a late hit well after he'd passed the puck off.

mithrilG60
06-07-2011, 02:39 AM
He went shoulder to face. Him leaving his feat shows he was driving up and into the head. It wasnt a chest hit. He went for the head and drove through the head.

Actually no, it was a poorly timed and late hit on a player that he would have expected to have his head facing the direction of travel instead of admiring his pass. It was that head turned motion that allowed the hit to be shoulder to head, nothing more. I'm not trying to say that it was Horton's fault as a result but was not a headhunting or intent to injure play. Like I said above, properly timed that would have been a perfectly legal hit.

I will just be stunned if he doesnt get 3-4 though.

I agree and hope you're right for a couple reasons. Firstly because it's important to send a message that these kinds of hits are just as unacceptable as the Cook hit on Savard or the Paille hit or the Charra hit on Pacioretty (although we know how well the league dealt with that one  ). Secondly because it means that Ballard will finally get into the lineup, I think he should have been playing tonight in Rome's place anyways.

I guess when Julien said he wouldn't accept that behaviour from his players, it just meant he would give them a good talking to. My favorite thing said after the game was when the sucker punching, taunting Lucic said, "We're a classy team and we want to remain that way."

This is kind of my take on it too. Really what else is he going to do. obviously neither of those guys are getting benched or scratched in the Final over something like that. Especially when Boston is down 2 - 1. I just find the hypocrisy both amazing and ironic.

The news on Horton is: He is moving all of his extremities and is talking but he thinks he is still in Vancouver. He won't be back. That's a shame.

Good, and obviously bad, news on Horton. Pretty sure this is the same report that was sent back to the rink last night. Hopefully he's doing much better this morning although I tend to think that you're right and he won't be back for at least tomorrow night. That was two big hits to the head, no point rushing him back and potentially risking the rest of his career.

While true, Vancouver is so deep on D that it doesn't really matter. Loosing Hamhuis really hurt because he and Bieska are our top D pairing, loosing Rome isn't as big a deal given that we have Tanev and Ballad in reserve. Ballard would be a top D man on pretty much any other team in the league, and probably will be next year if Gillis can find someone willing to take the $4 million cap hit. There's also always the chance that Hamhuis could be back tomorrow night. What's really hurt Vancouver in terms of D is having to shorten the bench for 2 games and play with only 5.

mithrilG60

That would certainly benefit both teams if the Sharks did Mike. Ballard is obviously in Vigneault's dog house, you don't sit a $4 million/yr player unless you have absolutely no confidence in him (or he's been sleeping with your wife). The Shark's could benefit from a D man of Ballard's calibre and that clears $4million off our cap in a year when both Bieksa and Erhoff go into RFA. I would also expect Salo to retire after this year if we in the Cup freeing up another $6million. With that extra $10million it would allow us to keep both Bieska and Erhoff thus saving Vancouver some the same kind of free agency decimation that Chicago experienced after their Cup win last year.

Definitely agree. After doing nothing to Burrows which is still simmering as last nights taunts showed. The league had to come down hard or it would have raised a lot of questions about motive and vigilante justice would have been very likely. I still dont put it past the Bs to smoke a Ginger in retaliation. Rome for Horton tied for second in scoring on the Bs is not a fair trade especially when the Canucks can just plug in another D man of similar ability.

Definitely not a fair trade off. I'm doubtful that the Bruin's will try and take out a Sedin though unless we end up in another Cherynobl-esque blowout like last night. Julien showed a lot of judgment by keeping his enforcer on the bench last night, I can't see him letting the team go vigilante on the Canucks and risk putting the Bruins into an elimination game as a result.

I don't think they will retaliate though, if the coaches and the league can stop the shenanigans with the finger wagging, diving, etc etc, I think if the Bruins take game 4, they will win the series.

The Sedins were involved in and setup 2 of the 3 goals in Game 2, and were an offense threat pretty much every shift in both the first 2 games. They may not have been a threat last night, but honestly who on Vancouver was?

I would be pretty surprised at this. I expect the Canucks and Bruins to split in Boston then head back for the decider this Friday in Vancouver. I actually thought that Boston would take game 4 and not game 3, but either
way. If Boston does manage to send the series back to Van tied at 2 it will be Vancouver in 7.

Not a chance. If something like that was going to happen it would have been in the Chicago series. The Hawks are the only team that's really gotten into Vancouver's head, everyone else are just teams that you occasionally have bad games against. Vancouver is still the odd-on favourite, but Boston is going to make is a great series :tu

He's been a significant figure in the league long enough that he certainly deserves it. That's actually a rather ironic statement given that it was the Canucks not being a bunch of "gutless pukes" and going toe-to-toe that played directly into the Bruins hands last game. The Canucks have the size and strength to grind it out whistle to whistle with any team in the league. Getting dragged down into a nasty, dirty, scrummy kind of game like Game 3 is exactly where the Bruins want the series to go since that plays to their strengths (I don't mean that as a negative towards the Bruins, it's just the kind of game Boston plays and what they've built their team around). The Bruins had also better be careful with all the slashing and dirty crap behind the play tonight. Game 3 was an absolutely disgusting display of classlessness and you can bet that's been brought up with the league and they'll be watching for it (from both teams) tonight.

The Canucks strengths are using their speed and size to exploit slow D cores and using the transition game to set our finesse players on odd man rushes and controlling/cycling the puck through the offensive zone to create holes for the Keslers and Burrows and Sedins to punish them with tic-tac-toe scoring plays. That's what took the Canucks to the Presidents Trophy and it's what brought them to a 2 - 1 lead in the Final... look for a resumption tonight. I'd also expect the Canucks to get just as big a jump, if not more so, than the Bruins off the Rome suspension. In their minds that length of suspension was completely unwarranted and, while I personally feel it was a perfectly acceptable response from the league, I can see where they're coming from too.

Charra breaks a guys neck, literally, on a stanchion and doesn't even get 2 minutes let alone a suspension? Eager intentionally tries to injure the NHL's scoring champion and likely MVP with a late hit from behind, again no suspension? Rome himself is concussed with a brutal elbow to the head forcing him to miss a game in the last round, yet again no repercussions from the league? None of those would ever be legal in any situation, yet Rome taking out Horton with what would have been a completely legal hit except for the offset timing is reason enough to give the harshest suspension in Finals history? That part I have massive issues with too, either you're consistent or you're not... and the league's ridiculously inconsistent application of justice means that far from sending a message, the Rome suspension is just going to be looked as enough another feeble response in a long line of joke "actions" from the NHL resulting in no changes.

The NW inflated their point totals, there's no doubt about that. There's also no doubt they they were still the best team in the regular season. Doesn't matter how much you hate the Canucks those are still the facts.

Mcginn did not make elbow to head contact it was shoulder to head and head to glass. His elbow never comes up. You cant rewrite an incident when everyone can watch the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAKE27l7ZzA. You can jump to 110 and see the elbow stays down.

You're right, my apologies for incorrectly remembering the incident. Still a very dirty hit and still far more deserving of a suspension than Rome's hit on Horton. My point stands.

As to the other stuff I said Charas hit was dirty. Eagers was not a clean hit but sedin say him coming and turned to face the boards. The league has been begging players (euros) :r to stop doing it.

Contrary to what you seem to think, none of my comments were directed at your personal opinions. While I'm glad we agree on the Charra hit, I really don't care what you think about the Eager hit. No amount of explanation or prevarication can justify intentionally putting a goon like Eager on the ice specifically to run an elite player with the intent of injuring him. Period.

The B's have the momentum and know they can beat these guys, look for more of the same kind of play in Vancouver,

Yeah I dont know what Eddie wanted him to do. Stand there and let her hit him with her purse?

I actually think the Bs should be seen as the favorites at this point. The schmucks won 1-0 and 3-2 on a break down by TT. Boston has now won 8-1, and 4-0 and has beat the Canucks like red headed step children all over the ice. Timmy looks like a stud and Luongo has gone basket case. More importantly in the all important bounce back game after a horrible loss he looked bad again. Clearly the Canucks are scared to fight as well. Only one team has been dominated in this series and its not the Bs. You know Vancouver is praying that the fire in the Bs bellies from the Rome hit dies because if it doesnt they will need luck and some suspect officiating help to win the series. Its not like they have any chance to out physical the Bruins. Chara looked out for blood at the end of game 4 as well which was interesting to see. The last time he got that pissed was at Pacioretty and that ended very badly. I just hope they get the jump on the Canucks early and get a couple past Luongo so we can all watch him go basket case again. I cant imagine that locker room right now.

What a fantastic series so far. The guts the Bruins have showed the last two games is really impressive.
.... yet Rome taking out Horton with what would have been a completely legal hit except for the offset timing is reason enough to give the harshest suspension in Finals history?

What do you mean by offset timing? IMHO, Rome's hit was clearly illegal since the puck wasn't anywhere near him. If that's what you meant by "offset timing", you're admitting the hit was illegal. A guy that doesn't have the puck, or the puck anywhere near him should not expect to get blindsided.

I read some of your posts earlier in the thread and you acknowledge a suspension was warranted, but now you're saying it wasn't? Or you're saying the number of games are too many? Maybe the series being tied up is changing your opinion. ;)

And, FWIW, I'm neither a Canucks fan nor Bruins fan (as a Flyers fan, the latter should be obvious :D). As hard as you (or, for that matter any of us) may try, I think you're looking at things with blue colored glasses.

Otherwise...I hope the Flyers can sign Bryzgalov....but they'd have to clear some cap space to do so. Jeff Carter on his way out???

He appears to go ghost when his team doesnt look good. I think I remember him going ghost in the Hawks series as well.

Was thinking lastnight. Both the Bs and Hawks play a physical grinding series but have some skill. Dont know why I didnt think the Bs couldnt do what the Hawks did. With the loss of Hamhus and Rome that deep D of Vancouver is now a question mark.

If the Bs are smart they will go after Eirhoff. He was hurt in the Sharks series looked suspect in the last few games. The turtling thing will be in his head and head and he may still be physically not right. Hit him hard every chance and he may fold. I would love nothing more. I hate him. As a Shark he did a couple things at the practice rink to people that showed the guys a POS of the highest caliber and became unpopular in the locker room. Still like Manny.

Ass!

Its interesting the HNC of that night Grapes shows Thorton chirping Rome hard on the bench just before the shift Rome gave that hit. He was saying he was wound up from the chirping. Dirty player? Id say no. Dirty dirty hit from a pissed of guy seeking some revenge? Yup. I really hate the BS watching his pass argument. They were entering the zone and it could be easily argued he was watching thr play to make sure he didnt put himself offsides. Either way he didnt have the puck and had taken atleast two strides before the hit. To attempt to defend it in anyway is odd.

Atleast on Eagers hit on the sister he had the puck. Ginners hit on Rome was set up by Luongos buddy fuc$ pass. Eagers hit was wrong though but Ginners hit was legal shoulder to shoulder. If Luo doesnt screw his teamate it doesnt happen, but Ginners forecheck forced the pass because luongo didnt want to freeze it.

Bruins seemed to suffer from too much reaching and not enough skating tonight. At this time of year, I hope it was being tired, not lazy. Looked tired to me. The extra day off before game 6 may serve them well.

Burrows is a punk...but the type of player that if he were on the team you root for, you'd love him (except for the biting). The embellishing would get old (like it does for me with Carcillo), but he takes a lot of pressure off his teammates. Reminds me in some ways of Barnaby (who I hated! :r).

He is an ass, no doubt. I think if the league called embellishment penalties without the trip or hook being called every time (seems like every time to me)players like him would ease off the embellishing.

Don't get me wrong...I can't stand the guy! But there is value to the way he plays for the Canucks, specifically for the twins.

I cant believe he had the stones to say that after making NHL history in the two prior games. He and Lebron. Ugggh. How does he explain the soft goals he was letting in tonight? 3 on 8 shots. If they win I will be so sad for Thomas. He has shown he is a stud and if his team wouldnt disappear this series would have already been long over.

I thought this was a good read, here's the link but I posted it because I wasn't sure if it was on Insider or not Letter to Luongo (http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nhl/columns/story?columnist=macmullan_jackie&id=6659167)

BOSTON -- Dear Mr. Luongo,

I'm so sorry I missed you Monday evening. My intent was to meet up with you at TD Garden, where I was under the assumption you and your Vancouver Canucks teammates planned to show up to play Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals.

My mistake.

By the time I settled into my seat in the first period, you were already gone, having waved your white Canucks flag in surrender. You had given up three goals on eight shots, and your coach couldn't stand to watch anymore.

For the second time in three games in our fair city, you were yanked from the Stanley Cup finals, reduced to a high-priced spectator with a baseball cap and yet another gaping hole in your postseason dossier. After your team's 5-2 loss, you were the talk of the locker room, for all the wrong reasons.

First, a confession. I was late for this heavily anticipated matchup because I spent the day scouring sporting goods shops looking for the proper apparatus to "pump your tires." It was brought to my attention this was something you felt Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas should have done for you, but he's been kind of busy shutting down your Hart trophy candidates. So I took it upon myself to show some old-fashioned New England hospitality and do the honors.

You do remember your comments, right? After Thomas gave up a late goal to Maxim Lapierre in a 1-0 Game 5 loss, you declared it was a shot you would have stopped.

"It's not hard if you're playing in the paint," you said. "It's an easy save for me, but if you're wandering out and aggressive like he does, that's going to happen. He might make some saves I won't, but in a case like that, we want to take advantage of a bounce like that and make sure we're in a good position to bury those."

Naturally those comments did not sit well with the Bruins. They were particularly curious since you had just come off two of the more dreadful back-to-back performances in recent postseason memory.

You followed up the next day by whining about Thomas, "I've been pumping his tires since the series started. I haven't heard one nice thing he had to say about me."

Hmm. That's curious as well. Since when is it a prerequisite for the competition to lavish his opponent with hearts and flowers and lollipops and best wishes? Thomas might not have been pumping your tires, but he wasn't slashing them, either. Lord knows he would have had enough ammunition had he cared to go that route.

He didn't because he's a thoughtful, poised, composed hockey player. He's got better things to do than dissect each goal you've let up. Besides, with so many to choose from, who'd have the time?

No matter. If pumping your tires is what you want, I was prepared to oblige.

There were two problems with this seemingly mundane assignment. The first: The minute anyone in the metro Boston area heard your name, he or she launched a string of expletives normally reserved for Ulf Samuelsson. You have a bit of an image problem here, Mr. Luongo, because of your decision to verbally challenge the aforementioned Mr. Thomas.

The insinuation from you, your teammate Kevin Bieksa and your coach, Alain Vigneault, that Thomas is "leaky" is, at this hour, well, laughable.

Did you ever take mathematics in school? In case you need a refresher course on how numbers work, let's review the data in front of us. In this Stanley Cup series, you have given up 17 goals. Mr. Thomas, the subject of your skepticism, has given up eight goals.

The scores of the three games Boston dropped in Vancouver were 1-0 on a defensive breakdown, 3-2 in overtime and the aforementioned 1-0 decision in Game 5. All three games were tightly contested, and all three were decided late.

In each case, Thomas kept the Bruins alive with the aggressive, albeit unorthodox style that seems to aggravate you so much. Thomas, you see, has a habit of giving his team a chance to win every time out, so much so that should his team hoist the Stanley Cup on your ice Wednesday evening, he will be the Conn Smythe winner as postseason MVP. In fact, Mr. Luongo, there's a growing sentiment that he might win the award even if your team prevails.

Here's the second problem with the concept of "pumping your tires": They are shredded beyond repair. Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic and Andrew Ference took turns drilling 8-inch spikes into them Monday night. You wilted under Boston's attack, and your team followed suit. Again.

Now, you might well win the Stanley Cup when you return to the friendly confines of your own rink. If so, what will we have learned about you?

That you know how to shine at home, where it's comfortable and easy and safe. That you imploded on the road the moment the pressure was on and you were forced to deal with some unpleasant adversity.

You've given up 15 goals in three games here, Mr. Luongo. And you have the audacity to suggest that Tim Thomas is the weak link?

I'm not known for jumping on athletes, but here's what really pumps my tires: your superior, condescending attitude toward one of the best stories in hockey.

Tim Thomas is 37, a 217th overall draft pick who toiled for years in the minors and in Europe, who had to fight and scratch and claw for a chance at a starting job, which he did not earn until he was 31. His livelihood was in question as early as this past season, when he underwent hip surgery that threatened to derail his future.

Tuukka Rask was thought to be the goalie-in-waiting, and he might well be a fine one someday. But he doesn't have Tim Thomas' grit or heart or guts or resolve.

Neither do you, Mr. Luongo. You might have that blue-blood hockey pedigree that comes along with being a No. 4 overall pick and an Olympic gold-medal goalie, but that doesn't give you the right to turn up your nose at Tim Thomas.

You certainly have had some fine, fine moments in your career, but you will be hard pressed to find anyone who will include these Stanley Cup finals among them.

I don't know who will win Game 7 on Wednesday night, but either way, I do know which goalie stood tall and proud and pumped up his team with his inspired play.

Sorry, Mr. Luongo. You fell flat there, too.

Sincerely, Jackie MacMullan

...
That's what we love about hockey, especially playoff hockey.

Is the regular season this intense? For some reason when I am flipping thru the channels and the Blue Jackets are on, I get bored.

I don't normally watch hockey, but I have watched pretty much every game of the Stanley Cup finals. This stuff is intense. I love how passionate each team is. Always fighting!

As long as I live, I will never forget how much I laughed when Bostons goalie hit the dude from Vancouver a few games ago. The guy for Vancouver hit Boston's goalies stick and then when the refs weren't looking he took out the dudes knee from behind :r

I could just hear the goalie saying "Don't touch my stick! I'm gonna take out your knee f--ker!" :rThere was a time when virtually every goalie would protect his crease that way from opposing players and sometimes from his own players when they strayed into the crease. What Thomas did is a lost art.
