Wow. There are homers and there are HOMERS. No one plays any game to lose. You are very confused to assert that they decided to not play the game and wanted to have 78 yards of offense and that the defense wanted to just give up 37 points for no reason. There is a sense of pride everytime you step on the field. They got dominated, and no one steps on the field and says, "I really feel like getting my ass kicked today so I'll just shut it down".
Essentially no different than putting your third string guys in and letting the other team slaughter you...like Buffalo and Indy. Just a thought...much rather play the Jets than the Texans. We shall see this weekend...hope I am right (grabbing at straws at this point).

Pulling Carson was about the only 'give up' move that they made yesterday. There are no third stringers in the NFL and backups play as much or more than starters this late in the season for any team. Believe me, the game plan drawn up on Wednesday was not 'Lets not really give a sh!t and maybe we'll have a chance, because when we give them the game we can play these guys twice in 6 days time.'
The difference between pulling the starters for the playoffs for the Colts, Chargers and Saints is far different because they have been far more dominant and cemented their 'Bye'. The Bengals haven't proved anything of late and appear to be limping into the playoffs, figuratively and literally.

I think that the Bengals play normally to match the opponents ability with many times nothing more (yet still manage to win somehow). Maybe throwing the game wasn't the right choice of words...all I am saying is that they already clinched the division so this game really didn't matter so maybe they didn't "play" to the best of their abilities let's say (not that it is fair to the fans or right to do). I am hoping this is the case.

I will be interesting to watch.
I see this as the same scenario the Cowboys/Eagles are in.
A total blowout of the team you will face again next week.
Will it be a case of the Bengals being demoralized due to the beating last week, as with the Eagles?
Will it be a case of the Jets and Cowboys being cocky and overconfident due to their win and the losing teams having had the benefit to now better prepare a defense and offense plan to now beat them?
Things that make you go hmmm......

Well deserved win for the Jets (it pains me to say)...Sanchez is clearly the better quarterback. The Bengals need to dump Palmer and Graham I'm afraid. Palmer can't throw the long ball and his short little 5-10 yard passes are often either out of reach or in the dirt....we got lucky this year because of Benson running the ball and pretty much had a non-existant passing game. As for Shane he always seems to miss those FG's when they really count...2 of which were the biggest in his NFL career last night at close range on his home field...unacceptable.

Jones is the man, remember he was the fastest player at the combine in 2005. By far one of the best athletes I ever worked out with, watched him run a 4.44 40 yd. dash in sweatpants at 'half speed'. He will spread the field better than Caldwell or Coles can do. Once again Carson has a deep threat who is physical and can go up and get the ball. Also remember he will likely be playing for his career so he has to come in and play from day one. :tu
Oh and I agree about Owens or A. Jones, the last thing the Bengals need is another strong personality like those two. Owens is far past his prime and is way too needy at this point in a Hall of Fame career doesn't want to be a #3 reciever like he should be. Jones opens his mouth way too much considering he has accomplished nothing and draws nothing but problems with him and his 'crew' come to any town. For being a small city there still be plenty of ways to get in trouble and I am sure Jones and his entourage can find plenty of trouble to get in. :hm

Post game press conference provided some insight to the dissention that might already be setting in. :hm
Palmer sucks because of the game plan that Bob Bratkowski gives him. Let the guy take the reins and he is as smart as any QB in the league. He has such a dumbed down offense, there is nothing he can do. Granted I know a little about football, but the guy's play calling is so transparent that you can call the play before it even happens. Their offensive line isn't great, but when a team gets to pin their ears back and rush the QB because you are down 24 or 28 it makes it even tougher. :td

...from Pro Football Talk.com's site!!
"It can get worse for the Bengals
On Sunday, the Bengals made history. As Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer points out, they are the first team in NFL history has led by 17 or more at halftime and loss by 18 or more.
The 35-0 second half score in favor of Buffalo was the Bengals’ single worst second half result in 43 seasons.
Amazingly, this 2-8 team hasn’t hit bottom yet. Consider what’s happening in the secondary, which was the one strength of the team.
Safety Cris Crocker looks to be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Excellent starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph (knee) is “out for the foreseeable future.” Safety Roy Williams (concussion) and Brandon Ghee (groin) also left the game early.
If the season ended today, the Bengals would have the third pick in the draft. Their next head coach can enjoy that decision.
In the meantime, we’re stuck watching the Bengals on the nightcap to Thanksgiving’s trifecta of mismatches. All three games feature a team 3-7 or worse facing a team 7-3 or better."
So what Joe Reedy is sayin' is that the Bengals are Record Setters!!!!! :noon :banger :=:
I actually am somewhat enjoying watching the games this season. As a lifelong Bengals fan I used to get upset on Sunday with crap gameplay etc. This year, I've decided that it's pointless...I laugh at the numerous mistakes. Hey, just lose out, get a great draft pick that you'll screw up as usual. (aka Andre Smith, Chris Perry, Peter Warrick, Akili Smith, Ki-Jana Carter, David Klingler, ahem, Carson Palmer)
It's all good! T.O. says it best (at least someone opens their mouth and speaks the truth, god knows our beloved couch won't) "What's crazy is the fact that we're just terrible. That's just plain and simple. When I say we, that's me included. Let me look you in the eyes and emphasize -- we are terrible. Terrible. I have no answers for you. I have no sound bytes for you. All I know is, right now, we are terrible."
Well done T.O., I totally applaud you for once in your life! :chr

We need to draft an offensive coordinator in the draft.
There, I fixed it for you.
It is also time to cut loose Chad and TO and start over with some team players. While they're at it: Smith, Rucker, Fanene, Benson. I hate to give up on Carson when part of this seasons debachle is a lack of consistent effort on the outside. :sh
Jeff Fisher might be on the job market, depending on whether he or Vince gets cut. Tony Dungy and John Gruden might also be interested in coming back. Gruden would be a good fit to instill some sort of discipline in the team instead of just allowing them to run wild. :tu
The biggest key would be cutting Mike Brown and hiring a GM and a recruiting/scouting department. :2

Well Marvin is now a lame duck (I guess you really NEVER know with Mike Brown), which means his entire staff is gone. I predict OL coach Paul Alexander stays, they try and re-hire D-coordinator Mike Zimmer and he balks at it unless he can fill out his own staff. The problem with the whole staff is they are all 'Marvin's guys' and most of them suck. Hugh Jackson (Oakland OC) peaced out 5 years ago and they haven't made significant firings in 4 years. This staff was filled with stale, bad coaching and I am interested to see who the new staff (and team for that matter) will include. :hm

Welcome to the Turkey of the Year awards, with your host David Fleming.
I knew if I did this Turkeys of the Year column long enough, T.O. and I would eventually agree on something. Well, after 14 years it finally happened.
Last week, after the Bengals' epic, gutless collapse against the once 0-8 Bills -- they blew a 21-point lead and were outscored 35-0 in the second half -- Terrell Owens called his 2-8 team "terrible."
Took the words right outta my mouth. Now, I ask you, how bad do things have to be for T.O. to become the voice of reason on your team?
Pretty bad.
In fact, the 49-31 blowout loss gave Cincinnati a league-worst seven-game losing streak while assuring the Bengals would continue to have just two winning seasons in the last 20 years. Ya know how many winning seasons the Lions have during that stretch? Six.
It gets worse. Brad Childress was one stupid play by Brett Favre from taking the Vikings to the Super Bowl last season. Ten months later? He's gone. But in Cincinnati there's still talk of a possible contract extension for coach Marvin Lewis, who in eight long years is 58-65-1 and still looking for his first significant win.
His Bengals start slow, they play sloppy, they don't protect the ball, they can't pass, tackle, cover, kick or punt, they don't adjust well on the fly, they're inconsistent and uninspired and they just got beat down on their home field (minus the 10,000 fans who sat home, unable to stomach the game in person) by one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Other than that, though, I don't see any reason to change a thing. I rarely do this: Bengals fans, I feel for you guys, I really do.
Which is why I've decided to break with tradition this year and nominate the entire Cincinnati Bengals franchise -- stubbornly playoff win free since 1990! -- for the Flem File's 14th annual Turkey of the Year Award.

1-10 is worse than 2-9.
Otah is the main injury that is hurting us right now. No o-line hurts us a lot. Deangelo Williams is out too, but his numbers sucked this year in what little he played. I saw it all yesterday! I went to the game yesterday...not that I want to contribute to Mike Brown's pocket by any means. My uncle bought us tickets before the season started because my cousin that lives in Orlando came up for Christmas and wanted to goto the game. Anyhoot, it was an entertaining day to say the least. It was COLD! We tailgated w/ a buddy of mine who's friend owns a hurst (not everyday you tailgate at a hurst, almost ironic as the Bengals are playing their way into the grave) Drank some beers, smoked some cigars. In the 4th quarter, I almost saw THE accident that tends to occur a few times a year in pro sports. We were in row 5 in the upper deck, some young mid-twenties drunk sitting 3 seats over, passes out while standing and proceeds to flip over 4 rows and land on his face with his legs dangling over the rail to the lower deck. (what was strange was that I just happen to look over at the right time and witness the entire thing. (the seats were all empty in front of him....go figure) he literally laid there for 20 seconds or so before he came to, still holding his beer, as his buddies rush to assist him, he sits upright and takes a swig of his beer, and in confusion, says, "what happened?" REALLY???
Another rare treat was.......THE BENGALS WON! Get outta town!?! As we proceed to walk to the car I was AMAZED at the amount of Bengal fans that were harassing the Browns fans................REALLY? The Bengals went on a 10 game losing streak (83 days, 23 hours and 53 minutes to get their third win of the season) And you stupid fans are going to harass fans of a better team after a season like this???? The Bengals went on a 10 game losing streak (83 days, 23 hours and 53 minutes to get their third win of the season) And you stupid fans are going to harass fans of a better team after a season like this???? WOW!
just my experience, it was a fun one!
I am glad you had fun Steve! At least you got to see a winner! :tu

One of the reasons I rarely ever go to the game anymore (I stopped getting season tickets a couple years ago) is the stupid drunks that attend the game. I never have understood why some people get so trashed on $8 beers that they won't even remember the experience.
The one year I had season tickets some jackass trash threw up behind me and the puke rolled down into our row. He kept puking. Finally I turned around to his buddy and said "Get him out of here before I knock him the f--k out" Everyone else basically said the same thing. Finally they got the hint and left.
Last year I went to a Bengals game with Christos (GreekGodX) and these trash people showed up and every other word was f--k and there were children in the row. I asked them to shut up and they said "f--k you, we are wasted!"

Sadly, all these teams care about is $$, so they'll keep serving beer to people who can barely walk anymore. I always found it humorous that the Reds cut off beer sales after the 7th inning(at least they used to) so people would buy five beers for those last few innings without so much as a raised eyebrow from anybody. Indeed, what's the point of being so smashed you remember nothing, what's the fun being around such people?

I think that cutting off alcohol in the 7th inning is a league wide rule. The same with beer sales in the NFL being stopped after the 5 minutes into the 4th quarter (might be the beginning of the quarter). Typically they will only serve two drinks per ID. :hm

I think the thing that pisses me off the most is when I always see him on TV running up and down the bench taunting the opposing fans. What a pompous d-bag. That, and the fact that he whines like a 10 year old when one of his teammates doesn't do something exactly like he should.

The Bengals might find a way to screw up this season more than they thought. Winning games to lose spots in the draft and perhaps saving Marvin's job. What a way to rub some salt on a terrible year. :bh

Neither. Both of them only found success in seasons when their divisions were at their absolute worst and have no consistency. But then again, both their owners have impeded them by signing and catering to over-priced under-performing primadonas. You can't make bad players into good players by forcing them into action or take bad older players. Bad personel decisions can kill any coach, Baker doesn't get a lot of help in that sense, Marvin gets no help, but he also cannot lead or control his teams. See: Stubbs, Bailey, Bruce, Johnson, Owens, Fanene, Smith et al. :2

There ya go.
So far as I'm concerned, Marvin Lewis is a damned good coach. Doesn't matter who you sit in that chair, the management isn't going to let him do his job.
You can't have cancer in the locker room, even if it puts asses in seats. It assures that you can't win. You could argue that Marvin should whip players in line, but if he has no hire/fire power, and the ownership undermines his credibility with the players, nothing will change.
I used to really dig that franchise because they were poised to give the Steelers some real competition. If the Steelers competition gets better, they have to get better, and we all get to see some damn good divisional ball, which is what I really enjoy. Case in point, Steelers vs. Ravens. Imagine if the Bengals had ever pulled off the air offense they were trying to put together? That'd have made for damn good ball, brother. :tu
It definately grinds on me that Cinncinati hasn't come along.
I'm a big Carson Palmer fan, by the way. No wonder he wants out. It's such a sadly wasted talent. He's been beaten half to death at this point, and I don't know if he'll ever get to shine like he should have. Regardless, I'd love to see him somewhere. Tennessee or Minnesota or anywhere where there's an o-line in front of him so he can throw the ball.

Carson has a pretty good OL, that isn't the problem. The problem is the system he is put in. Bratkowski is quite possibly the most predictable play caller in ALL of football (at any level). And Carson is under pressure from the top down to get the ball to his worthless reciever(s). There is no shortage of teams who are in need of a veteran starting QB. Mike Brown won't conceed a thing, he thinks he has it right regardless of the situation.

Wow, finally the franchise has taken a step toward being competitive. A sad day for AFC North Defensive Coordinators. Now they won't know what play to expect next. Now if they can just hire someone who knows football and get some offensive weapons who actually want to play football, they might be OK. :tu

02-04-2011, 05:08 AM
What do you all think about them hiring Jay Gruden as OC? I don't know much about him, but I am all for him as long as Bratkowski is out of there.
chippewastud79
02-04-2011, 12:53 PM
Good hire. Anything that is more complicated than Bratkowski will be an improvement. His youthful approach should go a long way in the attempt to maintain Carson and Cedric. :tu
chippewastud79
02-04-2011, 06:07 PM
Bringing in the West Coast style offense (just a buzz word, like "spread") should be good for a group of young, talented WR's and a QB who is accurate when throwing to people who run the correct routes. Not a lot of homeruns, but a very good balance will be helpful to the people that are coming back. Cedric should enjoy more carries and Carson won't be forced to get 25+ looks to Chad and TO per game. A good way to ruin this, bring back TO and Chad. Draft a #1 guy (AJ Green) and a LG in the second rd. and they should have a solid offense. :tu

Carson Palmer is definitely looking on the way out. Good move by him, I hope he retires because Mike Brown is a total ass. He'll come back in a year and go wherever he wants and Mike will get nothing. :tu
Worse news for the Bengals, they might actually draft a QB at #4. With their history of drafting QB's before Carson it could be interesting. Cam Newton will be a nice way to tank the franchise for another 5 years. I have a feeling he could end up like JaMarcus Russell. :bh

Any time you have a good feeling or make a prediction about sports you are wrong. Maybe cheering for Cam Newton isn't the best idea, particularly if they pick him. ;s
Cam Newton will likely end up like Reggie Bush, over hyped out of college, picked way too high, paid too much money and leave the team looking for a way out. And don't forget the losing the Heisman Trophy thing, that likely comes down in the next five years too. Remember, this kid played a single year of football in Division I, no one had a chance to figure him out because it was his first time around. Give Dick LeBeau a chance to game plan against him and he will have that kid sitting on his ass all day. :tu
