Thanks for the info, Scott and Vic.:tu

I knew that he had been in trouble with the ladies before, but not to that extent. Still, I'm not so sure about his suspension. I don't believe that he is a great guy off the field after all of this, but it is what it is. I know it's not the NFL way, but I would be more satisfied if the Steelers banned him from six games (not gonna happen) rather than the NFL. I guess that shows me as more of a States Rights kind of guy. I do see Goodell's reasoning though.
Andy, the Steelers already picked up Byron Leftwich yesterday, they have two other quarterbacks in Batch and Dixon, and they are dangling Ben for a draft choice.
I don't think, under the collective bargaining agreement that the Steelers have with the players union, that the Steelers can dispense any sort of "punishment". What they can do is fire him and get out from their contractual obligation to him.
If the Steelers can't make money, which as a business is their first priority, then they're going to look to minimize their loss. You can bet that the Rooney's fleet of lawyers has long since found them a fistful of "outs". I would be absolutely shocked to see Ben anywhere near the field with the Steelers this year. I was surprised to see him at training camp, but the shoe hadn't dropped yet.
I've loved Ben as much as anyone over the years. I desperately wanted none of this stuff to be true, so I read everything I could see since it all started. It's real easy to see that he did what he was blamed with. That makes the charges from the woman in Reno look perfectly real, too.

I'm sure the Steelers wish they could punish him, but I believe they are powerless in that capacity. I'd be willing to bet the farm that you won't see Ben throwing the ball for the Steelers this year. They are the second most popular brand in the NFL next to the Cowboys. They can't have a raper at QB, it'd cause a huge financial downturn, and money is already super scarce with the economy being what it is.
I'd love to see Ben not picked up by anyone. In my way of thinking, I can't even imagine a team desperate enough to hire a serial raper. If he was available to play for free, I can't imagine giving him the ball on my team. He hasn't confessed, he hasn't done time, and he hasn't begged for forgiveness because he can't. He'd be indicted. It all makes him very untouchable. It actually puts him in a far worse position than if he actually did get charged and lost his case and did time. At least there's some justice in that. I'm sure it's not much solace for the women and families he's hurt, but hopefully he'll get what he's earned, even if it isn't what we'd expect. :tu

Really who cares what Ben does off the field. The only thing I care about is seeing him score touchdowns, I could care less who he scores with off the field. This stuff happens any given night in any city. Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio did worse stuff than this. Anybody overly concerned with this is just jealous of Big Ben. Jarimor Jagr used to pick up girls at have a nice day cafe take them to his Limo do his thing then go back in and do it again.

Read the SI article on Roethlisberger. Bottom line, as a Die-hard Steeler fan, it doesn't put him in the best light. The "victim" was walking around with a RTF nametag on, ect. Typical drunken college debauchery on both parts. Roethlisberger needs to grow up, and get his head in the game.

You might feel a little bit different if Ben was raping your sister.
I care a hell of a lot more than what he does on the field. I can't imagine for a moment that there's one of our fine brothers here that doesn't feel the same way.
Were it my daughter he raped, he wouldn't need to be worried about throwing anything anymore. I highly doubt I'd even get a chance to take him out, because I'd have to crawl over hundreds of decent people who are already getting busy showing him the difference between right and wrong. Why he's still sucking air is an affront to good people everywhere.
Just because these disgusting, immoral, hateful things happen every day, it certainly doesn't make it okay. Destroying young women's lives and causing their friends and families immeasurable pain is nothing to be made light of for any reason.
I sure hope this isn't really how you feel, and it was just an uninformed oversight. It's quite possibly the most sickening and thoughtless thing I've ever heard said here.

I will add a resounding Giggity to this statement. Going with the Superfan pack this year for the first time. Coupled with the Redzone channel and 4 tv's I am a lethal weapon.

It's about time for the Steeler Nation to stand up and be heard, once again!!!

We’re on the cusp of a new season, preparing our campaign to bring home the seventh Lombardi Trophy to the Steel City. It will not be easy but worth every ounce of blood, sweat and determination that makes the PITTSBURGH STEELERS the greatest team in the national Football League!

It certainly wasn't pretty, but the one thing that I was very happy about, was that yesterdays win was a team effort. The Defense did a good job containing the Falcons and the offense did a good job protecting Dixson and playing safe/effective football.

We face Baltimore this week. Hopefully we pick up where we left off. :tu

Commander Quan
10-04-2010, 03:29 PM
That was a tough game on Sunday, however I remain optimistic. We were able to hold off, and stick with the Ravens for 4 quarters with a 3rd string QB.

Perhaps someone who is more knowledgeable about the rules then I can answer this, but is there a reason that we didn't intentionally let Baltimore score a safety on our last possession? We could have kicked off and forced Baltimore to start their next drive from way deeper into their territory, instead of on the 50 yard line, and make the offense drive up the field with 1:15 left on the clock and a kicker that has a 50% success rate outside of 30 yards.

srduggins
10-04-2010, 03:39 PM
It is much easier to move the ball within field goal range than it is to punch it into the end zone. You may have gained 20 yards in field position, but they would only need to drive 35 - 40 yards for a field goal attempt. I would much rather rely on our defense to keep them out of the end zone than hope their shoddy field goal kicker misses, and with 1:15 left on the clock, they had enough time to drive within an easy field goal.

With Ben in the game we easily win that one. Without one of many things happening we win it anyway. Time to forget the loss and watch the Steelers dominate the league with our franchise QB. Welcome back Ben.

If I was him I would put back $1 million for fines, and just go play. I mean these guys are told to jack people up coming across the middle of the field, from day 1. Look at Ed McCaffrey who used to play for Denver. That's what he was known for, he got jacked-up all the time, he broke his leg once. ESPN rated him as the player most likely to take a bad hit on the field.
I hope it doesn't get to the point of people tackling like Dion Sanders,(ESPN rated him as the person most likely NOT to take or put a hit on someone:D.)

The Saints were covering with alot of deep safety coverage. The obviously wanted the Steelers to try to score slow. They took Wallace out of the game and played very good D for most of that game. I have to hand it to the Saints for a game well played.

I can't argue with those thoughts. I really can't understand why Charlie is not dressing, they think Leftwitch is a better QB? I think Charlie held his own when covering the first 4 games. Only loss was to the Ravens and even Ben has issues with that defense.

Regardless what you think about Big Ben, he is a football stud.

Polamalu is what he is...... a Defensive Juggernaut.

The refs did a piss poor job last night....... un - freakin' - real. They should start hitting the refs with fines for not calling blatant, safety related, penalties.

My mother-inlaw is a whining Steelers fan too, I hit her with this last night, something I heard Cowher basically repeat in a radio interview the other day when asked about the Denver thing:

Cowher seems to absolve the Patriots for any wrongdoing.

"Listen, there's people stealing signals all the time before that," Cowher said. "You have ways to hide those things. We had wristbands for our defense. I remember trying to get offensive plays and see what the formations were. Everybody knows.

"You're trying to gain a competitive edge. Did that go beyond it? To a degree. Do I think that helped them win football games? No. You still have to go out and play the game. I still have a hard time believing that was a difference in a game."

She replied saying she was sending my Christmas present back :)

Great game last night!!! :tu
Mike, from the coach talk I've listened to, Charlie is the absolute last choice to throw the ball. It's cause he's too feeble and old (they say it a nice way).
They really want to play him if need be, cause they know he can go out and get it done, no matter what. So it's great to have him in your back pocket. They can't afford to lose him, so they coddle him. Not so much coddle, but they really find it necessary to keep him healthy.
The other issue with Charlie is that he can't get the ball down the field. If you play Charlie, you lose the whole deep threat that you have with Wallace, and it shortens the field considerably for the opposing defense.

If we're down 2 td's late in the game in the playoffs and Ben gets hurt, you're gonna see Leftwich. That's only cause he's the only one of the two backups who can grind out a lot of yards.
If we're down 1 td with a short field, you'll see Charlie.

I love Charlie, and Byron has saved our asses time and again, but we need a young stud behind Ben who has a canon arm. That fits what they're trying to do with the offense and the long game. A couple old guys doesn't really help us at all, and quite frankly, I think Ben's accuracy is for **** as far as the long game goes. That's a whole bother argument, though. :)

Actually - no argument. I think as with Tiger, Ben's game is way off. It's the defense winning Steeler games. Last few games his performance has not impressed me. Wallace, Ward, Pouncy, etc have carried the offence. Probrably an opion type place, but I would take the shorter game and 13 years exp over Byron. On the other hand, I don't think either is a top flight first string quarterback.

I do wish we had another bye week, the docs and time are needed to get some players healthy. Losing 3 to the Ravens can't be good.

I am a Packer fan and a cheese lover, but not a cheesehead. You got your 10 year old white cheddar or yellow cheddar, some mozzerella balls, and assorted other cheeses, I have even seen and appreciate cranberries in Moneterrey Jack.

But... no self-repecting cheese lover would consider swiss cheese to be yellow.

Therefore, to call me a die hard Packer fan who is also a lover of fine cheese, a cheesehead, would be like calling me some other potty-mouthed name.

I challenge you sir, to a duel to defend my honor.

LG Ghisels at 2 paces. We must smoke them together, while enjoying some 10 yr. old white cheddar (I prefer it over the yellow) with a bottle of Eagle Rare and a couple Taddy Porters.

As for your bet, how about this. You get the Steelers, I'll take the Packers. Whoever loses must smoke and entire Swisher Sweet Tipped Grape cigar and it must be witnessed and photographed by another member of this board!

The winner must smoke a Padron '26 #35 Maduro and review according to the old review version from SMOKE magazine and post it here. They also must be witnessed and photgraphed by another member of this board!

Beverages drunk while smoke said cigars are optional and at the smoker's choice.

As for the upcoming athletic competition between the boys from Green Bay and those from the Steel City - I am expecting the Lombardi trophy to come back home to Titletown USA.

shilala

Mikey, I just saw the "good on both sides of the ball" thing you said. They haven't had an o-line since the first day of practice, and it's been all the talk since day one. We don't have a left tackle. Haven't had one since day one. We've got a bunch of guards that really shouldn't be playing in the NFL.
For whatever reason, the Steelers have decided to become a pass-first, downfield offense when they have a quarterback who's mobile and relies on his checkdown receivers constantly, but don't have a line that that can let downfield plays develop.
The whole situation has left me shaking my head all year, and it started last year.
There's been talk of getting Flozell Adams and Max Starks off of bar stools to help out a bit, but it hasn't happened. I guess Starks isn't in any shape to play ball, and for all I know, Flozell may have been picked up somewhere else.
I don't think the Steelers plan to bolster their offensive line, and I'm not sure why. It just doesn't make sense. I think they believe that they drafted well enough and the injuries will iron out and it's a long season. Things will get better.
I'm not real sure that'll work out.
I'm not too worried, but I'd like to see some movement in the right direction real soon.
With the whole division playing at about the same level as the Steelers, all we can really do is hope the Jets kick Baltimore's ass tonight. The trouble with that is that if there's no threat that "we're in trouble", there's not much chance the o-line will get any help. We went to the Super Bowl last year with crap, why throw money at an issue they can ignore, ya know?
It just drives me nuts that we're a left tackle and a guard away from being a juggernaut. It drove me nuts all last year, too.
The lack of quarterback protection cost us the game today. Despite the shortcoming, we gave a damned good team a real tough run, and had a chance to win it if Ben would have been able to get the ball downfield.

I'm not sure what's happened to Mendenhall, either. Redman and Moore can find holes, but Rashard can't. I'll just let that one go before I start bleeding from my eyes.

After the results today in Houston all I can say is THANK GOD we have an favorable schedule the back half of the year. Although it won't matter with the way the O-Line is playin. the Oline has sucked for the last 3 years. How many times has Ben been pummeled in that time? I don't see us playin better than 8-8 this year. If Manning was playing last week we would have lost to the Colts also. Still, I love my team. No fair weather fan here. Black and Gold till the end.:tu

The O-Line has been terrible the last 3 years and they have found a way to still hold it together and make great runs. We will see what happens today against the Titans. If we lose at home and go 2-3 then I think your prediction of 8-8 could be realistic. Like you though my brotha...no fair weather fan here either. I am there through thick and thin no matter what.

The Steelers picked up Max Starks this week. I sure hope he's in good enough shape to play. I didn't take time to see if any other guards got healthy yet.
I feel good about the defense matchup against the Titans even if the rest of the world doesn't. They're taking a lot of negative press, and they'll be missing James Harrison and Aaron Smith, but I think they "fit" against Tenessee's offense.
I'd hate to see them go to 2-3 this week, but I don't think it'll be the end of the world. I'd rather see a low-scoring loss with the o-line coming together and the defense doing well than for Tenessee to come to Burgh and lay down and add false optimism and the Steelers decide not to pick up a little more help.
I'd like to see a low-scoring win with the D rallying and the oline coming together. That'd make me ecstatic.

Realistically I see Ben getting that foot hurt from lack of protection and Charlie seeing the field today. I want to see Mewelde and Redman pounding the ball down Tenessee's throat. (Mendenhall is out today.)
Let's hope for some pissed off Steelers to hit the field today and make Tenessee know they came to the house of pain!! :tu

Let's hope that the leaders step up and are the difference for the team today. This is the time when legendary players pull together and inspire the team to greatness.

Isaac Redman is going to start. Mendenhall is going to be limited.

Reports are that practice this week was the best this year....so, hopefully Coach Tomlin has righted the ship.

I have this feeling that Redman is going to have a huge game and that the defense is a Steel Curtian again. I just see Polamalu being so pissed, that he becomes a difference maker today.

Anyone see the game yesterday? First one I missed in 13 years, but for good reason....attended my first herf in Maryland. I saw Mendenhall ran for near 150 yards with a TD and Ben tossed another TD, but I was surprised to see the score that close. The stats looked like we dominated Jacksonville (they only had 209 total offensive yards) so I was just wondering what the game looked like. Did we look good or was it an average performance? J-ville is obviously not that good so I would have expected a more dominating performance at home.

As a jaguar fan, I was shocked myself to see it so close. After the 0-17 score the jags were able to show Pitt down and force them to punt a few times and come back with 13 unanswered points.

Jags on the other hand, could not get anything going. Punted like 8 times. I thought Pittsburgh was going to blow us away.

At least that stat is long gone. I must say though as much as I love the passing game (especially with stud Mike Wallace) I yearn for the days of Bettis up the middle and a cloud of dust in his wake...

I'm just used to the STeelers coming to town, beating you half to death, and running the ball over the pile of broken bodies. :D
I think our offense can do more damage to their non-existant defense than their offense can do to our nicked up D.
I think we can neutralize their monster tight ends pretty well. I think Brady will try to force the ball over the middle and I look for a few interceptions that are long overdue. The takeaways should make the difference if we can hold down the center of the field.

I understand being a passionate fan, but wishing a severe injury on someone is just misplaced anger. "I hope Tom Brady has a crappy day because he is thinking about his super-model wife all day" is a lot different than, " I hope Brady gets his knee blown out because I don't want him to beat the Steelers ass." Hines Ward is out today with his ankle. He's going to be sorely missed. I don't think he'd get a lot of targets but he throws a nice block and ties up short coverage and that gets Heath open. It's definately gonna hurt our short yardage passing game and that takes points off the board.
I'm not as confident as I was yesterday, all of a sudden. I still think our team outweighs theirs and I haven't looked at New England's injuries.
We can't get the game on cable or antenna today, so we'll be watching at Ruby Tuesdays. I think the Steelers are 7-1 when we go to Ruby Tuesdays, so that's a strong advantage right there. :D

Amazing game.
It played out almost exactly how I thought it would, except I really thought the boys in black and gold would put enough points up to make Brady throw down the middle more, giving Troy a chance for a couple easy picks.
I'm absolutely thrilled with how they dominated the Pats on both sides of the ball.

I'm not sure if the Steelers organization planned it this way, but they've really changed everything they need to change to play straight-up with Green Bay on Green Bay's terms. If those two teams hit the field right now, I think the Steelers would beat them 8 times out of 10.
I think another trophy would look good in Pittsburgh, too. :tu

I wouldn't mind seeing that a bit, and I'm a big fan of Tom Brady. He's a hell of a ball player. Senseless and on the bench is right where I'd like him.
I'm not sure why you'd bring his wife into this, you probably hurt Tom's feelings. :rolleyes:Scott, I took it literally and feel that SteelCityBoy is backing up after a negative response. As a Pats fan I congratulate you and the other Steeler fans who are not jerks on a great win. Hopefully the Pats can redeem themselves in the playoffs. Anybody calling Brady a crybaby forgets the ultimate cheapshot artist Hines Ward and his crying to the point that he chickened out of this game. SteelCityBoy, wish that I could meet you in person and discuss your problem over a beer and a cigar.

Paul, I'm not on here looking to make enemies. I am a passionate fan that hated watching Brady pick us apart. I came across a pic that showed Brady down on the ground and said "I wouldn't mind seeing this." If that was taken as I hope Brady blows out his leg, then so be it, but that's not what I said. Take it however you want. Steelers won, Pats lost, Brady still has his leg in tact, end of story.

Moving forward I will be more cautious with what I post out ther for all to see because I learn from my lessons. Clearly, there are other passionate people out there like me. That's fine, I don't fault anyone for it. Hopefully one day we can enjoy a friendly cigar over a beer and some sports or whatever...

When you pause for a moment, and if you are a true, passionate football fan, (which I know you are), do you really think that Hines Ward chickened out of the game? Really?
As for Hines Ward being a "cheapshot artist", it's football. He never did anything illegal, unethical or cheap when playing the game. Alot of those, blocks/hits came on interceptions when everyone is a target. Can't help it people don't have thier "head on a swivel."
And as far as comparing Hines Ward to Tom Brady as a crybaby...... the only time I've seen Hines Ward actually shed tears, was for passion of the game.
Like when they lost in the playoffs and he was upset because he wanted to win for Jerome Bettis, due to the fact that he felt, The Bus, " ...deserved to be a Champion." And when he was holding the Superbowl trophy.

As for Brady, like I said before. He is one of the best to ever play the game at the QB position. But he is one of the biggest cry babies as far as when people touch him, and always looking for the flag.

As for the game... well, Brady can't pick Pittsburgh's zone defense apart, like in years past. They played man to man on the recievers and the better team won. And Brady doesn't have all day to hang out in the pocket like he used too.

Pittsburgh Steeler football is about smashmouth:su on both sides of the ball:su. Has been for 43 years of my life, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

This game is going to be HUGE! We will have to see what the Steelers bring in terms of intensity to this game. I am sure the week 1 loss to Baltimore is still fresh in their minds.

With Woodley likely out with a bad hammy it would be huge to get Harrsion back in there. As of Saturday I read that he was being evaluated to see if he could play. If his vision gets the green light from the doc he will start. Our "D" will need to step up again this week against Ray Rice and not allow the running onslaught they did in week 1.

If our offence and defence plays how they have been in weeks past, we will envoke sweet revenge Sunday night! Can't wait!!!

It's too bad we had to play against the Ravens and the officials tonight.

Our downfall was letting them convert on so many 3rd down. That was disappointing.

SteelCityBoy

Sucks seeing the Raven's get the season sweep. That really hurts, but you have to hand it to them. They made the plays when it mattered most. Our "D" decided to take the final drive off and let them march 92 yards for the winning TD. That is embarrassing. Turnovers usually matter too and they way this season has gone for us in that category we should be thankful to be 6-3. Last night was just another example. Inside the red zone on a great drive that would have at least ended in a field goal instead is a bad read resulting in a pick for Ben. We coulda, woulda, shoulda won that game but it is what it is....a loss.

Now all of a sudden a back half of the season schedule that looked simple a few weeks back is a bit tougher. Cincy is playing good ball and will not be an easy task on the road next week. Let's hope that our "D" decides to step up and redeem themselves this week and then we can head into a bye to get healthy and some much needed rest.

I'm not happy with the loss, but it was an exciting game. Bottom line...our secondary sucks, they said they were going after our corners in the second half. They did....they won the game doing that.

The O-line did an outstanding job at protecting Ben. Suggs was a non-factor, when he was going up against Max Starks.

The only real complaint I have is the non-call for the personal foul that Lewis should have recieved for the helmet to helmet hit on Ward.
I know alot of Steeler haters think that Ward got what was coming to him, and in no way do I think it was malicious, on Lewis's part.

I personally can't stand Lewis. I think he is a great HOF player, but he is still someone who got away with being an accessory to murder.

We will see them in the Playoffs.

I also enjoyed seeing Tom Brady throw a temper tantrum on the sidelines yesterday.:D

What a game last night....wasn't exactly pretty but in the end a win is win!

If anyone has ever questioned Big Ben's toughness there should be no more doubt in their mind...

He has done it in the past time and time again and just continues to find ways to put his team on his back and carry them to victory no matter what.

Big Ben is Pittsburgh. That is what we are all about!!! Blue collar, give 110% all the time, work hard, and never say die!!!

I know Ben has had some off the field issues in the past but he just continues to impress me more and more. I think he best days are yet to come!

Let's hope that the rest between now and next Monday night 12/19 versus the 49ers is enough to help him and the rest of the team get healthy.

The Steelers will beat the Broncos, it may end up being 6-3 or something like that with how Ben has been playing but I think the "D" will rise to the occasion. Let's just hope that for any future playoff hopes after Denver that Ben feels better cause our chances against Baltimore or New England with Ben playing on an ankle at 50% are not good.

Hard to imagine that his ankle can get better while playing on it, but let's hope for the best! I think if he can play well this team can beat anyone...without Ben on his game our "D" can only do so much.

I want to congratulate the Ravens and the Bengals for making the playoffs as well. The AFC North is consistently one of the best divisions in the league, and this proves it.

In all honesty, with pride and passion aside for my home team...this game will likely define the rest of Tebow's career. If he comes out and lays an egg I think he is done as starter for the Broncos or anywhere else in the league.

God forbid (for us) he plays great and wins the game...then he will clearly have made a statement. He's playing against the best defense in the league, the best secondary in the league, and a defense that allows some of the least points in the league.

I have a terrible confession to make.

I thought this was going to be the worst playoff game ever played. I thought it would go to OT, but it'd be a 3-3 tie. I figured it would be either a terrible fumble or INT by Tebow, or Ben throwing a pick while he was distracted by his leg falling off.

I was wrong on all counts.

Somehow, some way, Tim Tebow learned how to throw a football. The Broncos failed to self-destruct in the 2nd quarter. Ben Roethlisberger proved he was the toughest SOB playing QB in the league, and brought the Steelers back from the brink of elimination. And then, the miracle happened. The prettiest spiral I have ever seen Tebow throw caught by Demaryus Thomas, then run for an 80 yard touchdown.

Instead of the worst playoff game ever, it may have been one of the best its been my privilege to watch. Maybe not as good as SB XXXII, but easily as good as the last Broncos' playoff win over the Pats.

Congratulations to the Steelers and their fans on their great season. Not every team can come back to force overtime after being down like that in the playoffs, and they certainly played like champions.:tu

Light up a stick...you'll feel better. Being a die-hard NY Mets fan...I feel your pain and let me provide you this little solace..."there's always next year"!! :D

Hey hey now, you're starting to sound like you're consoling a cubs fan :p

Just kidding Mac...back to Steelers conversation...that was one crazy game, just be lucky that the Steelers even had a chance at the end!

Fun thread to catch up on! ;)

yeah crap stats, all those yards are after the catch... when have you ever seen a playoff game where the winning team only had 10 completions?

I can't stand the Steelers, and even I know the answer to this trivia question! The answer is Ben Rothlisberger in Super Bowl XL when he went 9-22 with two INTs. What do I win? :r I don't know if that's the last one, but it certainly is a good one to point to for this thread.

Good point Joel...I remember that performance well.

BTW...why so hateful against the black and gold my brotha??? Just curious cause Philly and Pittsburgh really don't have much of a rivalry...
