After a few months of work, and some great testing and feedback from many of my fellow CA Inmates, I'm happy to announce that the Mobile Stogie application for iPhone and iPod Touch is now available in the iTunes App Store!

:wo

If you are interested in the testing, feedback and banter over the past few weeks, it's in this thread (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=11717).

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, this link is the direct URL (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=309242012) to the iTunes app store for Mobile Stogie.

Thanks to all the CA members that helped me get this done. Now I'm off to finish up some new stuff for the next version :ss

If you have the iPhone is version 2, the 2.2 update is free. The app will work with any iPhone hardware

Generally speaking, iPhone app updates are free. I have several enhancements already in the works, and they will definitely be a free update for anybody who has the current version.

Ken,
So far I noticed that there are a few vitolas that are double posted in the marcas. Not a big deal to me at all. If I look closer I can give you specific examples.

H. Upmann-Epicures, Majestics, Regalias
Partagas- Habaneros, Pdp # 1

Yeah, please do give me specific feedback. I would guess that the data is only ~95% accurate, and you'd be amazed at how much different conflicting data is out there about many of the cigars. Might never be perfect, but I'll be issuing an update pretty soon, and can fix a lot if you highlight the errors.

Thanks :tu

Oh I'm sure there are more than a "few" NC's missing ;). That's why it is designed for people to add, delete and change the reference data on their own device. I'm sure there are many thousands of unique cigars that I'll never find the info for. I tried to put in a substantial representation of cigars initially, and I'll probably add more with each new release, but I'll never get 'em all. I have added the Nub cigars for the next release, just to test the update mechanism.

Ken,
Had a blast toying with it last night.

I noticed a big line missing.
No NC La Gloria Cubana.

While I think it is neat to add your own if need be, will any of the currently missing major ones be added at a later date as an update?

Neat application.
Well done.
I am totally intrigued as to how someone can put something like that together and can only imagine the time you invested in doing it.
I hope it takes off for you.
Congrats!

Yup, I will be adding some more. :tu I have the update-code completed, and I'm fixing a few more things for a version 1.1. Probably ship it off to Apple within a week at most. Likely changes:

- A few more cigar brands added
- Default to last used Humidor when adding cigars to MyCigars
- Picklists for "acquired from" and "format" fields in MyCigars section
- Picklist for year (and maybe include month with it)
- Some code cleanup and optimization
- Default to all CAPS for box code field

Mostly just tweaks to make it a bit easier to use, while I get ready for a version 2 that will focus on smoking notes, reviews, etc... still thinking through the design for that.

Congrats!

I'm guessing I invested somewhere around 200 hours in developing this so far, but half of that was the steep learning curve for learning how to program in Objective C for the iPhone. Future work will go much quicker, I hope.

As for it taking off ... sold 26 copies on the first 1/2 day. Probably can't quit my day job ;). But that's ok, it's really just a fun hobby for me anyway. If fellow inmates find it useful, so much the better.

Ken,
I am guessing that if over 13 million iPhones have been sold, which does not even account for iPod Touch (can only imagine what that figure is), I venture to guess there are a lot of us cigar smokers with them.
The thing is to spread the word to them and certainly this forum, and others like it, should be of great value to you to help you accomplish that.
When my son returns from this week's road trip, I am sure he too will get it once he sees mine.

Well, day 2 saw a few more copies sold, so word has started to leak out perhaps :) Apple recently said that there were over 30 million combined iPhone/iPod Touch's sold, so I can dream of some fraction of a percent of those, right? :D

What's interesting is that in the daily sales data that Apple provides me, I see which country the sale came from. So far, these are the countries represented:

Australia
Canada
Netherlands
Norway
Sweden
United States

I think there are over 50 countries with app store access, so I haven't achieved any market dominance yet :ss

My iPhone is a first gen. It definitely supports it, but requires OS version 2.2 or 2.2.1. For the iPhone, that is a free upgrade, if I remember correctly. Do you know what version you are running? (touch "Settings", then "General", then "About").

I picked up the app a few days ago. I haven't read this entire thread, but I will say that I look forward to seeing a more complete database (I know it's coming) and links to reviews or ratings would be superb. A lot of time I'm looking a cigars in the shop on the shelf and this would let me quickly see what others think about them.

Good job, well worth the $3.99. I look forward to seeing how this grows over time.

One thing I would like to see in a future release would be a quick way to subtract a single smoke from the humidor from after you smoke it. From what I can tell, the only way to do that would be to edit the quantity which takes a few steps.

I have to say that this app is really saving me some weird looks around the house. Normally I go stare at my smokes and check in on them to say hi each day. Now I can just launch the app and check out my inventory without having to actually open the humi.

Now if I could only get the RH/temp to show up on my phone....

I will say one great addition you could do. I am not a developer, so stop me if it is worth the effort or not.

I have a drink app on my phone that allows you to add drinks that aren't listed in the apps database. There are many cigar company lines(Holts, CI, etc.) that aren't listed. Granted you could spend all day and night listing brands, but could possibly let your customers take care of that for you, or at least for themselves.

Good looking app, and is now one of my most used.:ss

You can add any cigars you want to your own database. From the brand or cigar listing in the reference section, just click on the "add cigar" button, and you can add anything that's missing from the database. In the brand field (or any other field that has a picklist to choose from, just scroll to the top and you'll find a "Add New ..." selection. If you add a cigar with a new brand, then in the future that brand will show up in the picklist. Same is true of the other fields (shape, wrapper, binder, etc....).

Hope this helps. If you are referring to a different capability, please let me know...

As far as me adding more brands to the app in upcoming versions, I'll do my best, but I'm sure I will never capture them all. That's why I coded it for each user to add their own favorites.

I just submitted the version 1.1 update to the app store (will probably still take a week for Apple to approve it). Here is what it contains:

A few more cigar brands added (total of 101 new cigars; now up to 1,842). Illusione, Nub, and several others.
Default to last used Humidor when adding cigars to MyCigars
Picklists for "acquired from" and "format" fields in MyCigars section
Default to all CAPS for box code field
Some code cleanup and optimization

Still working on some cool feature for the next update, but with this update, the data entry should be a bit easier :tu

There is now also a new support website for Mobile Stogie. Check it out at www.mobilestogie.com (http://www.mobilestogie.com) (thanks to my son Jon for the website building).

I'm new to the iPhone, do updates override data? I'd hate to lose all of the work I've put into my mobile stogie, but love the changes you've made...

The update will not overwrite your data. This update includes a framework for checking your database version, and only updating reference data that I've added in the new version. It will not touch the "My Cigars" part of the database.

Check out one of your reviews on the application.
I too am creative.
I used "CigarAsylumMember".
Might as well plug this site while at it.:r:r:r

Try right clicking on the iPod icon in iTunes and selecting transfer purchased items. If that doesn't work, make sure you have the option checked to sync apps under the application tab.

FYI ... version 1.1 was posted to the app store last night. It should notify you automatically of the free upgrade.

This update was somewhat minor, adding another 101 cigars to the database and a few user interface improvements. Mostly, it helped my restructure some code to facilitate future improvements, and to test the update process. Seems like everything is working fine with the process, so I recommend that you update to version 1.1.

Now working on some cool features for a version 1.5 or 2.0 upgrade. Many users have emailed me suggestions, so I have plenty of ideas to implement :)

Ken, What about a tab for accessories? Not really needed but could be cool?

I still think there needs to be something for the app to pick up the signal from my wireless transmitter in humidor so I can check humidity/temp at all times! lol :)

I'm lazy. I've tried a lot of other apps - but they all required to much user info in addition to having to run to the computer. That's all changed now!

Downloaded - played with - rated and wrote a review!

Don't know how much of personal inventory I will add due to the amount that I smoke daily - I really just want a database to look up smokes in - and this fills the bill perfectly. I may though decide to use it as a "I have this smoke" with out actually keeping track of how many.

No matter though - this is the best app, mobile or otherwise that I have tried to date!

Kudos Ken - :tu :tu

Neither of those are out of the question ;). The latest code that I'm testing on my iPhone includes a ring gauge tool that is very accurate. Working now to linking into cigar listings so you could quickly find the cigar you are holding ...

And the new iPhone OS that is coming out in june will provide more external accessory capabilities, so stay tuned :tu

Cigar Reference-->Oliva-->Swipe Left on the "Nub" that I created-->Tap Delete

I just tried it again today to simulate the steps for you and it worked without crashing. I had repeated that process yesterday about 4x with it crashing each time. The only difference between yesterday and today is that I did a backup/sync on my iPhone yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure if that matters at all.

Yeah, that would matter, but there is still a bug ... a slight memory "leak" that can show up if your device gets tight on memory. Sorry about that...

I'll get the update out this week to squash that bug, and deliver a few more features I've been working on.

Here's a glitch for you Ken. After deleting an Opus Ronusto from I hit back to fuente the back to my cigars and it pulls up the same screen (fuente) again hit it again same deal, after the forth or fifth try it crashes. Open back up then went to delete a taboo torpedo and back to taboo then when hitting back to my cigars same thing after the forth or fifth try crashed. This was all done while deleting cigars from one of my humis.

yep, you are the 2nd person to report that behavior. I did find the bug; it's exactly one line of code in the program. I was hoping to get some new feature stuff implemented and included in the next update, but I can't let this linger out there with a bug in it. I'll see if I can ship out a quick verion 1.1.1 update to fix this one item. (although "quick" is relative: it seems to take Apple about a week to review and approve any updates).

Thanks for the heads up.

Great, thanks for your support. :tu

FYI, the 1.1.1 release is still "in review" at Apple. It has only the one bug fix, and should get released any day now.

The next release that I'm working on now will be a much bigger change. Along with a few smaller items, the big item is a "live update" feature that will allow users to click a button in the app to get database updates automatically. This will allow me to add new cigars, and add/correct information on existing cigars without going through a whole update cycle with Apple, and has been the #1 requested feature from users.

There is a lot of stuff to do around this feature, so probably another week of coding and testing before sending it to Apple. This is probably a "version 1.5" type of update. Version 2.0 is still targeting a whole section on smoking notes/reviews, etc.

Oh yeah, one more update: the app has now been sold in 21 countries :ss

Thanks for the heads up. Just a quick status update, in that life and work have been crazy busy over the past month or so. Lots of travel and late work days, so very little time to look at Mobile Stogie code. Looks like it will be quieting down now, so I can get back to work on it.

Priorities at the moment:

Make sure it works well with upcoming iPhoneOS 3.0 (or Apple will pull it from the app store :)).
Complete the "auto sync" for new cigars in the master database (grab new cigars from my website). This code is almost done.
Smoking notes section.

Sorry for the delay in making more progress, but life has its priorities ;)

I'm working with the 3.0GM code now, and unfortunately several of the database calls break with 3.0. Fixing them to work with 3.0 breaks them for 2.x, so I'm working the issue now ... this was definitely not expected with the 3.0 release. :bh :bh

Actually, I'm pretty impressed with the embedded sqlite3 database. For lightweight stuff like this, it's pretty solid. FYI, I think I have the code fixed to work with both 2.x and 3.0 now, but I have to do pretty extensive testing now, because I have made a lot of code changes under the hood. Also, some of the new stuff I have been working on have to be backed out to get this update submitted. I can't afford to have the app crashing for people when the 3.0 update is released on the 17th.

Any how if you need someone to test something i'm around.

I may take you up on that, depending on how straightforward my testing goes tonight. Thanks for the offer :tu

have you put any consideration into an export/import for the DB.

Yes, but it's a little more complex than you might think, due to the limitations imposed around the file system. However, the number one thing I test in all of my code changes is ensuring that no data gets overwritten. I do know that people want to be able to export for other reasons though, so I'll keep working on that.

Quick update: since there was a crashing bug in the release code with the new iPhone OS 3 (which will be generally available in a couple of days), I had to take a pause from other coding/testing to get out a specific update for the new OS.

So, if you upgrade to iPhone OS 3, you'll need version 1.1.5 of Mobile Stogie. Hopefully Apple will approve and post it soon.

Now back to the more interesting work... :tu

Well, when I check my developer account, there is a section for managing applications. Version 1.1.1 shows "Ready for Sale". Version 1.1.5 shows "In Review". Absolutely nothing that indicates that they've pulled the app, yet clearly they have done so. Kinda sucks, but ultimately my own fault. I waited too long to get the update posted for the crashing bug in the new iPhone OS, trying instead to get a bunch of new features included. At the last minute, I went ahead and fixed the couple of small changes needed for compatibility with OS3.0. But I'm sure they pulled the app in the meantime, because the new OS is being released tomorrow.

Hopefully Apple will hurry up and post the new version, and all will be back to normal. In the meantime, I'm working to get the new features finished for a 2.0 release.

I could get all upset at Apple, but I simply waited too long, so lesson learned. I'll post back here when the update becomes available. Thanks for your patience guys...

Some cool stuff in OS3, but it will take me some time to make improvements to Mobile Stogie to take advantage. I'm just a hobbyist ... the pros will be releasing some cool stuff sooner I believe :-)

Any word on when the app will be available in the Canadian iTunes store? Can't access it up here.

I believe it will be available (again) tomorrow, but again fair warning... still waiting for the version 1.1.5 version to be approved by Apple. Should be any day now, but if you have iPhone OS 3 installed, the My Cigars section will likely crash until you get that update. Current "ready for sale" version is 1.1.1 and will work fine on OS 2.2.x. Version 1.1.5 is "in review".

Sorry for the confusion... should be all cleared up in a matter of days.

Thanks for the continued interest :)

Update: The 1.1.1 version is back on the app store. If you haven't upgraded to iPhone OS 3, then this version is fine. If you already have OS3, then I recommend that you wait until 1.1.5 is posted (any day now, I hope).

Absolutely, you'll get notified of the updates as they are posted (no charge for the updates).

The issue you will have until 1.1.5 comes out is in trying to drill down into the "My Cigars" section. There is a crashing bug in that code due to changes in the database calls with OS 3. The reference section should work fine, so you can get a feel for the app at that point. Hopefully 1.1.5 will get approved/posted any day now.

Thanks

if you setup your 3GS as a new device, then the app would simply give you a default database (with an empty "My Cigars" section). If you instead restored from a backup of a prior device, it should copy your existing database. Not certain if it's possible though going from one type of device to a new one. (by the way, I'm jealous of your new 3GS; I don't have one yet, still using an origingal iPhone)

Quick reminder that with iPhone OS 3, the My Cigars section is broken; should see the update posted very soon to fix that.

Thanks again for your support :tu

Well that makes sense LOL. Ok then not having an issue...just a dumbass :)

I must say that the 3GS is worlds above the 3G IMO. The voice search functionality in multiple applications alone is worth the price of admission. Nothing like saying "Phoenix area malls" in Google and having it auto-search EXACTLY what I said. Also searching for songs/artists etc and playing them all through voice control is Awesome :banger

This app is pretty sweet. I still have some onesy-twosy sticks to enter. And any Davidoffs -- they are not in the selector, for whatever reason.

Two things that were sobering: I have more smokes than I thought I did, and I have spent a lot more than I should have. I remembered most of my purchase dates (pretty closely, anyway), but consulted receipts in some cases.

Don't look at your receipts. Just get rid of them.

Ok, I've been updating the Mobile Stogie code, adding a few new features, and I'm (finally) ready to code up the "Smoking Notes" section. I don't want to get too elaborate with this, but want to capture the basics. Things that could be put into a 'pick list' would be best, to minimize typing.

My initial thoughts:

All the cigar info (including year, box code, etc) will come from the existing inventory data, so just need to add these fields:

Date
Location
Smoked with whom
Drink paired with
Appearance
Draw
Burn
Ash
Flavors (how to best do this?)
Text notes (do I need to break this down into thirds?
Photo(s) ... (one is easy, more than one might get tricky)

Thoughts??

As for flavours, how about using the flavour wheel on SilverFox's cheap stick review sheets and the iphone's touch controls so you could just touch as many of the flavours that apply?

FYI, last night I submitted the next version of Mobile Stogie to Apple. Now we wait (again) for the mysterious review process before they post the app. It is version 1.5.0, and yes it is a free update. Still haven't finished the smoking notes section, but there are some nice updates here that people have been asking for. NOTE: This is for iPhone OS 3.0 ONLY. Major changes include:

Added 493 new cigars to the reference database. Additional NC brands:

Davidoff
Macanudo
Hoyo de Monterrey
Cohiba
Partagas
Punch
Don Tomás
Montecristo
Drew Estate
Guillen Cigars

Added 'All Humidors' view
Added sort feature to 'My Cigars' views
Added Ring Gauge Tool
Improved user interface for cigar counts
Improved, easier access to inventory data
Many code optimizations

Here are a few new screenshots.

Main screen with updated reference cigar count (up to 2,335 cigars, from 1,842 previously):
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/MobileStogieMain.jpg

New Humidor View showing 'All Humidors', and the new cigar count look:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/MobileStogie1.jpg

New 'All My Cigars' view that can replace the Humidors view. This allows very quick access to your inventory, as you don't have to drill down to screens of category, brand, cigar, etc. Also can be sorted by brand or quantity. Just one big list:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/CigarView.jpg

And lastly, I added a ring gauge tool (because I could ;)). It is remarkably accurate! Just move the slider, and the image changes size. Set the (unlit !!) foot of the cigar on it, and figure out what ring gauge that mystery smoke is.
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/RingGauge.jpg

Look for the update in probably a week or two, after Apple reviews it!!

Why wouldn't it work for your ipod touch? You can update the software on your ipod to v3.0 for about $10. I should have all the same capabilities as the iphone, without the calls, of course.

If you are in the app window in itunes, click the "check updates" button at the bottom. That should put the latest changes on your ipod. You may have to update your software, as noted above, for some apps.

 Everything in this app will work on the iPod Touch just the same as the iPhone, as long as you are running OS 3.0. I'm not using any special features of the phone.

Seems like the review process for apps is running about 2 weeks these days, so we still have to wait for Apple to post the new Mobile Stogie version. But you'll be notified automatically when it is available.

Yep, right now all of that information is in the reference section (shape, length, ring gauge, etc.). How much of the reference info is needed in the My Cigars section? I have toyed around with having a button to "flip" the screen to toggle between the My Cigars info and the Reference info. Would it be better to just list more of the info directly on that My Cigars detail page?

A direct 'export' thing not simple, as there are a lot of limitations in the filesystem that apple doesn't allow certain actions. Likewise, when emailing, I don't think they allow attachments. However, I could create a full table of inventory data in the body of an email message, which you could address to anybody (including yourself). Would that be useful?

By the way, you are on your own if you accidently email your inventory to your wife :r:r

Best way to provide feedback is to email me at the address in the app. I keep all of the feedback organized in a 'wish list' of ideas people have provided, so can track better that way.

if you go back a page or two in this thread, you'll see the main updates that are coming with version 1.5.0 (still in review at apple at the moment). Hopefully that will post to the app store within a week or so.

I there are two cigars with the same brand and name won't they gt added together. If the shape was added they would be separate. This is why I was asking for shape. Not a big deal.
This is the only extra thing I think would be nice to see. Mainly to separate the sizes. I realize you are probably trying to keep the info displayed to a minimum for space real estate.

I was going to suggest a way to do a review, but it looks like you are already thinking about it.

Maybe a way to be able to pick a cigar from My Cigars and it place it into a section called Smoked Cigars. Thay way it removes it from the Humidor list and in another list where you can track the ones you have smoked and your thoughts.
(Just a suggestion as it may not be feasable)
