That live update will be great !!!!

Easy for you to say ;). I fear I'll be creating an expectation that I spend all my waking hours loading cigar information into the online database, so people can keep getting updates. But I'm assuming I can find some help with that around here somewhere :ss

KenS

By the way, the bug that Sikk50 found has been fixed. I think I'll package up the live update feature with that bug fix (and a couple of other interface tweaks), and get an update out right away. That live update feature is one of the most requested, so no point waiting to finish up other development.

Any volunteers to figure out what additional brands/cigars need to be added?

Depends on what you're offering the volunteers :D J/K I know that your original intent was not to have you entering everyone's brands of cigars. IMHO it takes away from an app if you have to do it. I enjoy going through the app and entering my brands. :2

I did notice that if I try to delete a cigar, the cancel button won't work. At that point you have to delete it.

I often find the cancel button has to be tapped several times, and specifically on the top half of the button. It does seem hard to hit that button correctly, but it will work eventually.

That set of buttons is called an "ActionSheet", and I see the same problem with other apps as well. I don't think it has anything to do with Mobile Stogie specifically.

DId anyone else notice Puff now has a cigar app similar to Mobiel Stogie now? hmmmmm

From what I was looking at the screenshots, it looks like more of a "cigar review" app than an inventory app. Unless I'm looking at a second one.

"Our application gives the user quick access to both a vast cigar resource as well as a massive review database. It is comprised of user submitted reviews and commentaries."

So its not the same thing at all.. at least unless they decide to expand on it.

Personally I like the features of Mobile Stogie better as well as the direction its going... but it is definately only a matter of time before someone tries to get out there and compete with ya Ken!

Just trying to give Ken a heads up on the competition.

Ahh.. I haven't been on Puff's forums, so I wasn't aware of the direction, just what the current app looked like on the app store.

When Mobile Stogie first came out, Jon Caputo contacted me to write his app for him. Offered me a pretty fair deal, but I didn't trust him enough to want to do business with him. Apparently, he found somebody else to do it, which I don't worry about too much. Competition is good, and hopefully we all end up with what we want to enhance our hobby. I already have a day job, so I just work on Mobile Stogie because it's fun. If somebody comes out with an app that blows it away, I'll probably be first in line to buy the app :)

Appreciate the support from you guys though :tu

Update: Version 1.6.0 has been submitted to the app store today. What's new:

Fixed a crashing bug in certain situations when deleting cigars
Added Live Update feature for new cigars (most requested feature!!!)
Added 'Price Paid' to the My Cigars section
Miscellaneous code cleanup

Seems like the review cycle is around 7 to 10 days recently, so should show up sometime early next week. In the meantime, I'm adding more cigars to the online database for the live update feature.

Enjoy :tu

I sent Ken a spreadsheet with ALL of the Cuban Regional Release information as well as 2009 Edicion Limitada that have been released/testing.
Once his new version is approved he can push that new data to everyone.

I did restore from my backup, but that didn't fix the overriding problem with the ipod. I had to restore as a new ipod. I asked the Apple dude if I was going to lose all my data (thinking soley off this app), and he was not sure.

I now know the answer.

But, I enjoy counting my cigars and seeing how they are doing. I still have about 300 to load. Really not that hard to do, except for the "hard to find" Fuentes which have so many different purchase dates.

At does live update mean?

It means whenever KenS has a update to do as far as updating the cigar database it will update directly from a server instead of having to send in new updated applications and waiting on apple to approve them.

GoldnGT
08-03-2009, 08:58 AM
Yup. Only updates he will have to submit will be for the actual application itself. He won't have to program the cigar data into the app and then everyone wait for an update =)

Some of them are already out there. Go to the main screen of the "Reference" section, and tap the refresh icon on the bottom right of the screen. It will connect to the website and pull down the available new and updated cigar data.
Let me know if it works ok for you.

I have other updates to get into the website as well, but I'm crazy busy in my day job so I'm a little slow.

I'll try to get the RE list update in there tonight or tomorrow. I have to address duplicates of the ones I already had, and figure out the best way to represent them in the database regarding naming. See the Boli Legendario that I already have in there for my likely approach...

Thoughts?

Yeah I think putting RE in the name of the vitola(like you did with the Boli Legendario is your best bet. As you noted, they did reuse discontinued sizes and re-issue them as RE's for 1 year in the same vitola.
Look forward to it buddy.

Working on it now. I decided to go with the country/region name as printed on the band, so the Legendario is now "RE Suiza" instead of "RE Switzerland". I'll follow that approach for all of the regionals you sent me. Update now, and you'll see the Legendario and the JL Maximos with the updated country name. The rest will follow shortly...thanks for your help :tu

You have put out a wonderful cigar app and all the work you've done and continue to do to improve it is greatly appreciated. Any lookers who have not downloaded the app yet do so without hesitation. Top notch.

Success!

Cigars updated: 70

The price paid was a great add on this go around. One of the few things I really missed when comparing MobileStogie to what I use to track my pipe tobacco cellar.

There were a few things that were accidentally changed in the last release when "price paid" was added to the possibilities when adding a cigar to your humidor.
Ken said he has fixed the issue and submitted the update to the Apple store for review.

Cuban Reserva items have been added to the database as well, with 1 small update needed. The Cohiba Seleccion Reserva needs to be combined into 1 item ans they came as 1 box, not 6 seperate items.

Yup, I broke it :(
But, I have submitted the fix, so it should appear in a week or so. When I added Price Paid, I neglected to change the row numbers associated with rating and notes, so they are a bit screwed up. Hopefully the review process will be quick, and you'll get the fixed version soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Thanks for helping to add new cigars to the database, but I'm not sure I agree with the approach you recommend on the Seleccion Reserva. I tend to think of Mobile Stogie as a way to get info and inventory on individual cigars, not about collections of cigars. If I add this as a single item, how would you get shape, ring gauge and length information on any one of them? And if you had one of them in your humidor, how would you refer to it?

Anyway, that's why I exploded that one entry into the detailed information for each of the included cigars. Other people care to weigh in on this?

DPD6030

I go by individuals not by box. So if I have one box of Monte # 2s I put 25 sticks of Monte # 2 in my humidor. Now especially with the Cohiba Reserva line they come in a box but different sizes. I say enter them as individuals or you won't be able to put RG and length in under "1" box as they are different. :2

I put mine in as "reservas" because once I start smoking them I don't care that much about the size. And prior to smoking them I don't care about the size because its an unbroken box.

Here is a suggestion Ken. I've avoided entering my meager collection because I buy and smoke rapidly. If I had something that let me subtract from my humidors as I smoke, that would take the cake.

Also some kind of way that when I add new cigars the stars in the sky would spell out "f**k you thieving bastards at Puff" that would rock.

I know this more correctly belongs in the WTS area, but since it's so much related to this thread, I thought I'd post it here first (mods, feel free to let me know if this is unacceptable):

My lovely bride and I both received brand new iPod Touch 8GB models today in a golf outing. Since we both have iPhones and iPods already, I'm looking to sell these models. They retail for $229 ($215 on amazon). I'll let them go for $180 each (shipped) If any BOTL wants one, and I'll throw in a free copy of Mobile Stogie as well, via a code to be redeemed on the App Store.

MO or PP is fine (but please bump the amount for the PP fees). PM if interested...

The simplest way would be to add a fourth button for smoked/traded. Then clicking that button takes you into the humidor and you can click a selection to decrease its number maybe?

Is there any chance you would be able to develop a Blackberry version?

GoldnGT
08-19-2009, 01:39 PM
Ok, over the past few days I've come accross a few things I'd like to toss out there.

Ability to rename your humidor!

Easier way to move cigars. When you click on the cigar, edit, change the humi name, it leaves you in the humi you moved it to, rather than where you were previously, so you have to go all the way back out and over to the humi you were in. This was painful for the 25 cigars i moved.. i can only imagine it being more painful for people with larger collections! Think there would be a way such as with the email programs you can do an edit, select multiple, then tell it where to go? just a suggestion =)

(i think i saw this one in another post) have it where you can view information about the cigar in your collection. such as if you are looking at your Hemingway Short Story and you are trying to remember... "what is the filler on this thing" you can just click a button to see the info rather than having to go back through reference and look it up.

Is there any chance you would be able to develop a Blackberry version?

Short answer is "nope". Combination of my skills, blackberry capabilities, and (most importantly) available time for me to tackle another development platform. You are about the 10th person who's asked though :)

BTW, thanks for the rep bump, even with this answer ;)

Great, I always appreciate the feedback and suggestions!

Ability to rename your humidor!
Actually, you can do this pretty easily:
1. Create a new humidor with the new name that you want
2. Delete your existing humidor. If you have cigars in the existing humidor, you will be prompted to either delete them, or move them to another humidor
Simple as that :-)

This is one that I'm working on now. Should be in the next update :tu

By the way, in case you didn't know it, when you are several layers deep in a section (for example, "My Cigars"), tapping again on the "My Cigars" tab on the bottom of the screen immediately takes you to the main page of that section. It can be a real timesaver when you want to move up several screens at once.

(i think i saw this one in another post) have it where you can view information about the cigar in your collection. such as if you are looking at your Hemingway Short Story and you are trying to remember... "what is the filler on this thing" you can just click a button to see the info rather than having to go back through reference and look it up.

Actually, I have been working on that capability this week. I'm just about done with it; just have to make it easy to flip back and forth so it's not confusing. Again, should make it into the next release.

KenS
08-19-2009, 03:49 PM
One more update: Version 1.6.1 was approved today, so should begin showing up shortly. The only change is a bug fix for the "Rating" and "Notes" fields in the My Cigars section. They got messed up when I added "Price Paid" in the 1.6.0 release.

Also, quite a few new and updated cigars have been added in the past few weeks, so be sure to click on the update icon on the main Reference page to download the latest reference info.

Not sure how much "lighter" it needs to be than $3.99. That's less than a cigar (usually) :ss

Nobody says you need to populate the humidor section. The reference section is pretty useful even if you don't use the other parts. Then, when you fall hard down the dark side, people start insisting that you keep your humi's full, well, then you'll be ready!! :D

Absolutely, in fact I can do better than that!!!

From now on, you just have your purchases shipped to me, I'll inventory them properly, email you the update to your Mobile Stogie database, and then store your (our?) cigars in a properly humidified vino.

One suggestion -- would it be possible to allow us add notes to cigars, so we can note what we liked, or did not like about a particular cigar?

Thanks again!

There is a notes section in the app. When you add a cigar to your humidor, there is a notes field at the very bottom. Tapping it will expand it to a large text field where notes can be made. You can also get to this field by selecting a cigar you've already added to your humidor, where you can edit it to add likes/dislikes after you've smoked one.

don't get me wrong - $3.99 is more than fair! I was just suggesting a reference only version. But yes, I guess you're right - the reference alone is worth it even without using the database

Ok, another update has been submitted to Apple. It is version 1.7.0, and has some changes that have been requested by quite a few users:

From the My Cigar detail screen, added a button to 'flip' the screen to the reference information for that chosen cigar.
Also from the My Cigar detail screen, added a button called "Smoke One!", which will automatically deduct 1 cigar from the quantity, while (optionally) opening up the 'notes' field to type in notes about the cigar.
Fixed a couple of small bugs that happened in rare situations.

So again, we go into the Apple review cycle, typically around 7 to 10 days.

In the meantime, don't forget to periodically tap the update icon on the main reference screen, to download new cigars and updated information for existing cigars.

Ok, back to work now :)

When you "Smoke one" does it leave it in the humidor, or where does it go? I like to keep a record of what i've smoked and when, so i just wanna make sure that I'm able to pull up the information. Right now i've been using a seperate humidor in the program to move the cigars to. I would "guess" that it adds a section called smoked and moves them there? but i could be wrong.

Nothing too clever (yet). All it does now is reduce the quantity by one cigar, for the particular 'My Cigar' record that you are viewing. It's just a quick convenience to avoid having to go into edit mode, tap on quantity, edit the number, and save the change.

I still have plans to do a proper "smoking notes" section, but that's a big development effort (relatively speaking) to make it really easy to use. Been trying to knock off some of the smaller enhancements that people have been requesting first.

You know, I think we get spoiled by all the $0.99 apps that $4 seems like a lot.
At first, I thought, $4, really?
But I don't regret the purchase at all. It's definately worth it!!

While I'm waiting for Apple to approve the latest update, I'm wondering what NC brands you guys feel are most important to add to Mobile Stogie. Most consistent 'complaint' in the reviews is that there aren't enough NC brands represented, so I figure I can work to add some more over the next week or two.

Thoughts?

I was one of the first buyers of Mobile Stogie. But I wasn't using it because I smoke too much and it was too much of a hassle to adjust inventory. YOu pretty much turned me into a user now with this newest update and the "Smoke One" button and now next weekend I will give up a few hours to get everything properly inventoried. I've had some bad iPhone karma recently and have needed to restore from back ups several times. Each time I do, I end up with a virgin copy of Mobile Stogie. Not a big deal until tonite when I spent the last hour plus cataloging one of the vinos. Am I doing anything wrong? I KNOW I back up my iPhone correctly, but on the restore the app is there but not the data.

Wow, that is bad iPhone karma, but I don't see any reason that the backup shouldn't restore properly. Nobody else has ever raised this issue, and I have done restores many times without problems. I even changed phones twice in the past couple of months, and each time restored correctly.

I will ask on one of the iPhone dev forums to see if anybody else has seen this. Sorry for the inconvenience Vin. I'm getting ready to release another update that will include the ability to email the inventory data as an excel file. That wouldn't completely solve the issue, but would make it much easier to reload the info if you had it sitting in one place like that.

Lastly, there are several free applications that allow you to extract data from your iPhone backups (I use "iPhone Backup Extractor" on my Mac). You might want to find one of those and verify that you have a good backup of Mobile Stogie. If you go down that path, PM me and I'll help you understand what to look for).

Thanks, Ken. To this point it really hasn't been an imposition because I haven't been adding any significant data. Now though, I'm really starting to get serious about cataloging my inventory, so I look forward to the email functionality you're adding. The hour or so I spent with the app last night was actually kinda' fun. It's very functional, and not at all gimmicky. Me likey!

I did have another question though -- I came across a stick not in your database; an 09 ERDM French RE. I added it as a new cigar. Should you ultimately update the database with this cigar, what happens to the info I entered? (Let's assume the info I entered matches your update 100%.) Will my be overwritten? Or will I just end up with two possible selections for the same stick?

You'll end up with two possible selections. Each reference cigar gets a unique 'key' in the database. There is a reserved range of keys for user entered cigars, to ensure that I never overwrite any of your data, so your 09 ERDM will get its key, then when I add it to the main database, it will get a different key. It was the best way I could come up with to be sure I don't overwrite anything. I've been thinking about using a different color, font, italics, etc. to distinguish the user-entered records. Suggestions are welcome :tu

Another thing you could do is to email me the info that you would want to put in, and I could add to the master database. You'd then get that info when you tap the update icon. I have an excel template that a number of folks have been using to help fill in the reference data. Of course, that doesn't give the immediate result of just adding it to your own copy.

If you edit one of the reference cigars that is already in my database, and I subsequently edit the same cigar, it will overwrite your edits :(. Not sure of the best way to avoid that, other than to ask you to let me know what I have wrong in the reference data, so I can fix it for everybody ;)

I could change the code so that it flags the cigars that you edit, and then you would not get edits from the main database for that same cigar. It would create bit of complexity in the code, but it's certainly doable. Unfortunately, I would have to submit a new update to Apple in order to make that change. I can see both sides of it; what do you think?

I imagine you've noticed a LOT of updates recently. Those are mainly significant cleanup that I've been doing to Origin, Binder, Filler and Wrapper data, fixing a lot of inconsistencies, spelling errors, and a bunch of data that was truncated in the iPhone database (had the wrong field length in my online database for a while).

Everyday there's more coding to do... :ss

True enough, and I'll look into this as I continue to work on a more complete 'smoking notes' section of the app. In the meantime, a reasonable workaround that others are using:

Create a humidor called "Smoked". Anything that you want to maintain notes on can be put in this humidor. In your example, when you are viewing a cigar in the reference section, it's pretty quick to add it to the "Smoked" humidor, and you have immediate access to the notes field when you add it.

Not perfect, but not too bad for the moment.

Hope this helps :tu

Not exactly sure what you are describing. Can you tell me the steps you are doing, and what is happening? I cannot reproduce the error of adding cigars and having the quantity put at 0 (when I have specifically set a different quantity).

One thing to note is that each time you add the same cigar to your humidor, it creates a separate entry for that addition. That is so that if you have two boxes, for example, you can have different box codes, years, aqcuired from, etc. Maybe this is what is causing confusion?

Sorry. Here's what I did.. i'll give ya two examples.

One where I already had some in the humi: I went into Reference, Non Cuban, went to 5 Vegas, clicked on Miami Robusto. Clicked add to my cigars, add to humi. filled out the information i normally do, Quantity, Where I got it from, Format, which humi... etc. When I hit save it brought me back to the reference, and the "my cigars: XX" still had the same number listed..

I did this again, same process with a new cigar entirely, and it put the cigar in the humi with a quantity of zero. =\

Kinda weird, only time I've had something unusual like this happen.

I can't reproduce this behavior at the moment, but I'll try to test it some more. I'm wonderering if any of the info you added (acquired from, notes, etc) might have had some 'special characters', such as punctuation, that might have caused a problem saving it to the database. Any thoughts on that?

You can click edit to remove the cigar.
You need to be on the screen where it shows the cigar you added, but not in the screen where the details are. So, if you see the info for Origin, Shape, etc. Then go back one screen and hit edit. Then you can delete it.

Ken,

A few suggestions:

- A concept of boxes would be nice, like a total box count or something like that. Maybe even expand the humidor to know what it can hold so I can see where I am against capacity.

- An attribute that holds market value which can be more or less than I paid.

- A way to get this information from the iPhone to somethign else in case I want to publish a list or I need a record of my collection.

One more Ken, a way to copy a box. Like normally I buy boxes in quantities of more than one so to simply be able to hit a button and copy date, source etc would be great.

This is the first app that I have paid for and I must say that I'm very pleased with it. Great job, Ken.

Are there any plans for an archive of "smoked cigars?" I don't know the mechanics of the code, so I don't know if this would be a colossal update or a simple tweak. I'm envisioning something that takes the current date/time from when I click "Smoke one" and puts it into a list of cigars that are forever a memory. This might be outside the intent of this app, but would be a welcome addition.

- An attribute that holds market value which can be more or less than I paid.
I like this idea, also.

On the topic of amount paid, what happens if I buy more of a cigar that I already have but pay a different amount? Does the new amount overwrite the old or is there a weighted average?

If you add it as a new cigar (rather than just changing the #) you can have two or more different prices. They can show as purchased from different locations as well as dates.
I like this because it helps me remember that I paid $x from one location and $y from another.

I guess that would work, it's just that I don't know which one ($x or $y) I'm smoking unless they are from my locker at my standard B&M - all NC locker sticks are ones I bought there.

That is handy for comparing prices from more than one source. It is also a good method for keeping up with how long a particular cigar has been aging. I think I'll use it. I will also try to keep multiples separated so I know their age.

Ken,

A few suggestions:

- A concept of boxes would be nice, like a total box count or something like that. Maybe even expand the humidor to know what it can hold so I can see where I am against capacity.

This is one that I haven't heard before. Not sure what that implementation would look like, without becoming very complex. Got any detailed suggestions on how it might look?

- An attribute that holds market value which can be more or less than I paid.
The core database actually has two price fields in it, but I've only exposed one of them in the app so far. I had envisioned a "price paid" and an "msrp", but it feels like very heavy maintenance. Do users really want to track that level of detail? Actually, this may take care of itself, as I'm working on the next version that will allow each user to choose what fields to show for their own copy of the app. That way, people who don't care about all of the fields can simplify it, but those that like the gory details can have that too.

- A way to get this information from the iPhone to somethign else in case I want to publish a list or I need a record of my collection.

Another feature coming in the next version is the ability to email your humidor contents (to yourself or others) as a text file to import into something like Excel. It will allow you to choose which humidors and which fields to email, so should give some good flexibility.

Yep, anybody can add cigars to their own copy, but if you want to help out the rest of the users, let me know and I could send you a spreadsheet template to fill in the info. I would then upload that to the online database so everybody would benefit. I've sent the template to quite a few people, but only a few have taken the time to gather the info and return it to me. I guess they find out just how much time and effort it really takes ;)

Let me know what brands you are interested in, and I can add them to my to-do list as well.

Right now if you have Avo 80ths (A) and you enter more Avo 80ths (B) A and B are separate animals as they should be. When A is instantiated its its own entity. There is no function for "What did I pay for all my Avo 80ths and what is the average price for them?"

That function I'd guess is probably a new version of the app since there would be other rudimentary math functions you'd prolly want to expose as part of it, in fact it could be a separate app tho I'd personally prefer if it was the same app and he raised the price a bit.

Think of it as rows in a spread sheet with each row representing an entry.

My own two cents, unless this thing is selling like hotcakes I'd simply let people add to their own copies and do database updates a little less frequently. At this point you have like 2800 cigars represented, thats a pretty fair number.

Actually, we are just short of 3,000 cigars currently, if you tap the update button :)

This is the advantage of developing this as more of a hobby than a business, since I keep trying to make it better even though I'm not getting any money for the updates I do. Certainly not selling "like hotcakes", but I've been pleasantly surprised by the steady sales (about 8 to 10 per day for the past few weeks). If I were doing this as a business, I would have moved on to a new app in order to increase my income, but I do enjoy getting suggestions and continuing to add features. Oh, and because I love you guys :D

Short answer: nope.
Longer answer: nope.

If you read through the thread, you'll see that this is often asked (including recently). BB is a completely different beast to program for, and frankly doesn't have the user interface capabilities of the iPhone (I use both every day, so this is not an attempt to start a BB vs. iPhone debate).

Ken, I might suggest one thing to you, more recomended for this thread than the app. You need to make a FAQ for your app that covers some of the questions (Such as the BB app) and other stuf that might be asked consistantly, and have one of the mods edit your first post in the thread to have the answers to some of those questions.

Also, sending a PM to get the spreadsheet sent over.

More feedback requested:

I just got a file from Famous Smoke Shop with a listing of their house and exclusive brands, with info to import into Mobile Stogie. But they omitted 'binder', 'filler', and 'wrapper' info. How important is that info to include in the app? It seems like it's always a pain in the a$$ to collect that info, and I don't personally use it for anything, but wanted to get feedback from other users.

I've emailed back asking for that data, but have my doubts about them sending it.

Thoughts?

BTW, the list includes 1,485 records !!! Some of them are 'bundles' of more than one cigar, so I won't include those, but still this will add a hell of a lot of new cigars to the database. It also means I have to make a more efficient way to get to the info in the app (search, index, etc.); I'll be working on that...

Ken,

First off great job with this app, I absolutely love it. I just purchased this last night and I have a couple of questions/recommendations after toying around with it for a little bit.

-Is there a way that you can add a 4 digit passcode feature to gain access to the app?
-Is there a way that you can differentiate between cuban cigars that are current production and those that are discontinued? Also, maybe even a separate way to recognize the limited edition or regional edition cigars. A nice way to do that would be to use separate font colors, or to group the cigar types together under separate headers (example: http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/brand.aspx?brand=Cohiba)
-If a cigar is discontinued, it would be nice to see the year that the cigar was discontinued rather than the word Yes.
-Is there a way to add the year that the cigar came into production?
-Is there a way that you can add packaging types to current production cuban cigars?

Thanks again Ken.

Ken,

I just noticed something. When I use the smoke one button if that selection is reduced to zero it doesn't remove it, it just shows 0 left in that box. Is that supposed to happen?

Also is there an easy way to transfer things to a "smoked" list so you can see what you have smoked and bought over the years.

Ken,

First off great job with this app, I absolutely love it. I just purchased this last night and I have a couple of questions/recommendations after toying around with it for a little bit.

-Is there a way that you can add a 4 digit passcode feature to gain access to the app?

I'm sure there's a way; I'll take a look at what it would take; haven't really considered that before, but I understand a couple of scenarios where that would be desirable ;)

Yes, I did this in the original web version of Mobile Stogie (which still exists, by the way, at this link (http://www.mobilestogie.com/webapp/). Is that what you have in mind?

Each of these presents some challenges in terms of maintenance (as well as mostly being relevant to Cuban cigars). I honestly never intended Mobile Stogie to become "the" definitive reference, but more focused on the inventory capabilities. Already, I'm sure the reference info around the 'discontinued' status is not 100% accurate. But, having said that, it is also clear that people are using this as a reference more than I expected. Let me see what I can do on these; I'll add 'em to the list ;)

I've toyed around with this, but wanted to keep it simple so left it as just reducing the quantity to 0 (but it won't go below that ;)). Often when I smoke the last of a cigar entry, I just tap the delete button to get it out of my humidor. But if you want to keep the record, and add notes or something, then you could edit the record and change the humidor to "smoked". This refers to current version...

In the next version I'm shipping this weekend, there will be a 'transfer' capability that will make this easier. I'll describe that in more detail after I get the testing done and ship it off to Apple...

There's a free app called Lose it! that you can check out that offers this feature. I think it would be a nice option to have for your app.

Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind. I understand what you're saying about not intending for this program to be used as a reference tool, but that's one of the big things that I would like out of it. :D

Thanks again Ken. :tu

Well, it took a little longer than expected, but I finally got the next version of Mobile Stogie submitted to the app store. Hopefully, the review process will be reasonable, and this should be available in a week or so. It will show up as Version 1.8.6 (current release is 1.7.0).

What's new:

Added capability to email cigar inventory data
Added capability to move cigars between humidors
Added 'shake to select random cigar' feature
User interface tweaks
Code optimization to reduce memory needs and to increase speed
Added hundreds of cigars to the default database

When I get a few minutes, I'll post some "use cases" to highlight how some of the new features can make things easier, especially for those of us who move cigars around (pifs, bombs, trades, herfs, etc.)

(I have another app where the programmer has been promising an update since I got the app in February. Still waiting for all of the feature updates.)

I had downloaded the application when you first posted it here and became available.
Frankly, been so busy, had not had time to toy with it since then.
Last night, while sweating watching the Yankees, I messed with it and did some updates.
Great new features added to it since I last used it.
Can't wait to see these latest updates.
Nice job.

I'm thinking of a new model for adding cigars: to have a cigar added, you'd need to send me one, so I could do appropriate tests and measurements to ensure accuracy :ss

Thanks for the support, but right now the app store doesn't easily support the concept of paid upgrades. They allow "in app purchases", with which I could enable a "pay $$ for expanded features" kind of model, but to me it feels like nickel and diming people. If they ever did the true paid upgrade model, I might take advantage of that to offset the work for a major feature upgrade, but it's working fine for me now, since it's just a hobby anyway.

I do appreciate the support and feedback from CA members though :tu

Very nice! Feature request - I would love for a way to import data if we wanted to edit it on a computer.

And just throwing out another vote for a better way (than using the "Smoked" humi) to keep track of smoked cigars!

Thanks for the great app!!

The last update took a while to get through Apple's process too from what I can remember. Not Ken's issue, but this isn't a one-time thing. The only reason I remember is becasue the last update included the "Smoke 1" update that I was itching for, and I was checking the store for updates daily for about 10 days (maybe more).

I've yet to see them approve anything within a week. Depending on volume of apps (always increasing), I typically see between 1 and 2 weeks to approve. Plenty of horror stories of developers getting into several months of limbo as well, but (knock on wood) I haven't had that happen yet. I'm guessing sometime this week.

Actually I have started to look at the Android platform, but mostly as a curiosity at the moment. I seriously doubt that I'll have the time to learn and develop on a 2nd platform. The only reason I even look at it is that I'm sick to death of AT&T. I really like my iPhone, but I have enough issues with AT&T to consider alternatives. To me, the Android platform will best be remembered as the competition that drove Apple to fix the AT&T problem, and hopefully continue to drive innovation forward as well.

It's a little tricky to use landscape mode for apps with a "Tab Bar" (the bottom of the screen with the different sections of the app), but it can be done. Is there a particular view that you think would benefit from landscape mode?

I have exchanged email since April with Rob, and he continues to promise the info to add to the database, but he's a busy guy and hasn't gotten around to it. Most recently, I re-sent him the template 2 weeks ago. He again told me he'd get the info back to me, but I know he's busy launching a new website.

I honestly thought this would pretty easy, as I figured he would have the info sitting in a database somewhere. But what do I know

I think Verizon is being a little bit careful to attack the AT&T network, rather than specifically the iPhone itself. Might be hedging their bets :2

Either way, it's a brilliant ad campaign.

Actually, they specifically target the iPhone with their "iDon't" bullet points. This is the heart of the campaign and gets more play than the talk about the network. They also go after Apple policy with the "no open software development" line.

I still wouldn't be shocked if the iPhone came to VZW, but considering the amount of money they are spending on a (basically) anti-iPhone campaign it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon.
