Hey Ken,

Since your is the ONE and only app I have on my Touch, and since we are waiting for approval of your latest version, I thought of you when I read this. Now you can see where your app is in the approval process:

 Not really much of an improvement. Lastest Mobile Stogie update went from "waiting for review" to "in review" on November 6th. Not sure what that status change has done for me to understand what is going on. I doubt it would take any of you guys 6 days to review the app :D

Any chance of a DROID version?

Answered in this thread just a couple days ago:

Actually I have started to look at the Android platform, but mostly as a curiosity at the moment. I seriously doubt that I'll have the time to learn and develop on a 2nd platform. The only reason I even look at it is that I'm sick to death of AT&T. I really like my iPhone, but I have enough issues with AT&T to consider alternatives. To me, the Android platform will best be remembered as the competition that drove Apple to fix the AT&T problem, and hopefully continue to drive innovation forward as well.

Got the "Your application is Ready for Sale" email about 1/2 hour ago, so version 1.8.6 should be showing up sometime this evening. Sometimes it takes and hour or so, sometimes several hours; I never fully understand the process

Reminder of what's new:

Added capability to email cigar inventory data
Added capability to move cigars between humidors
Added 'shake to select random cigar' feature
User interface tweaks
Code optimization to reduce memory needs and to increase speed
Added hundreds of cigars to the default database

Here's a use case for the 'move between humidors' capability:

If I grant a wish on the MAW or TAW thread (even when I'm not at home, since I have my inventory with me ;)), I just create a new humidor with the name of the BOTL that I'm sending the wish to. Then I browse through my other humidors and move cigars 1-by-1 into the newly created humidor.

Once I get home, I can just look at that one humidor and quickly grab the sticks to box 'em up for shipment. After that, I just delete that humidor, and I get prompted to delete the cigars that I added to it. I've used that capability several times in the past couple of weeks; very handy.

Another use for it, moving cigars from the main humi itself to the single drawer which you may want to treat as a separate humi. Or moving cigars from the big humi to the desktop, or moving cigars to the travel humi for a weekend trip. You get the point.

Ken - I was doing an "email" to myself from the program, and for some reason, I cannot select one of the Humidors. I can select 2 of the Humi's I use, and even my wishlist, but the 2nd humi on the list it will not let me put a check mark beside... any thoughts?

Edit: I deleted the humi and made a new one and it worked. The only thing I can think of is that it didn't like the ' that i had in the name.

Can you tell me the name of the humidor?
Also, can you try adding a new cigar to that humidor, and then delete that cigar? Then does the email function work?

Very strange problem, but we'll figure it out.

Ken,
if the program can output a cab file...can it be made to import a Csv file?

That way we could enter all of our cigars in excel and import into the app?
Just a convenience.

Just a convenience.

Unfortunately it is not that easy, for a couple of main reasons:

1. Each application is 'sandboxed' on the device, and not allowed to access any data of other apps (including email attachments, etc.) This is actually a good thing, so that malicious things can't be done between applications on your device. Of course it also creates some limitations that require clever things to work around.

2. The database structure itself has to maintain relationships between the reference data for a cigar, and the cigars that you put into your humidor. It does this with certain 'reference keys' that you would need to know about in order to create the spreadsheet/csv file in the first place.

Ultimately, the answer is a companion desktop app and/or online service for synchronizing your humidors. Both are under consideration, but pretty large undertakings. I already spend a LOT of time on this app, so I can't promise, but I continue to look for a way to give you guys what you are looking for :tu

In case you are wondering what all the updated cigars are all about, I have now gone through EVERY cuban cigar in the database and verified the information to the best of my ability (invested about 8 hours in this; currently 853 cuban cigars in the database):

- Removed duplicates
- Added a bunch of special release cigars
- Validated the status (current production, special release, or discontinued)
- Fixed a bunch of typos

The reason I did this is that the next version of Mobile Stogie will list the cuban cigars in "groups", starting with current production, then special release, then discontinued. This will make it much easier to find any given cigar in the reference.

(Though I could do this for the NC's as well, I have no confidence that I can maintain the status of those 1,000's of cigars.)

This feature is about done, but I want to add two more features before shipping the next release:

- Ability to move from Wish List to a humidor (forgot to do this before ;))
- Some basic search functionality (at least search by brand and/or name)

I'll let you know when I get these features done, and shipped to the app store :tu

Unfortunately it is not that easy, for a couple of main reasons:

So until some sort of import function or the like is implemented, what is the best way to make sure I can restore my collection should something happen to my Ipod Touch? Does Itunes back it up? What if I get a new Ipod or Iphone?? Will I be able to transfer?

I've spend a LOT of time entering my collection and I would HATE to have to do it again. Thanks!

Short answer is yes, iTunes backs up the database and can be restored onto a new iPod or iPhone. The gap is in the scenario where something bad happens and you want to restore your device to factory settings, without using your backup. In that scenario, use your emailed inventoy and start tapping on the buttons :)

Hopefully that scenario is not very common.

It seems totally random as to when it fails

My procedure:
I go into My Cigars, drill down through the Humidor, Cubans, Marca, Vitola.
I then click on the arrow for "Cigars on the Move"
I choose option 3 "Move to Humidor..."
On the left dial I select 3 (or #), in the right dial I choose the other Humidor.
I click Save and......Bam, back to the Apple Springboard.

I just ran a test moving 3 cigars and it failed
I then ran it moving 2 and it completed successfully.

Then I ran it with 2 and it failed, and ran it again with 3 and it completed

I just grabbed this app. Looks pretty sleek. Ever consider including pics of the cigars as well, inside the library? Maybe get your customers to upload standard pics (eg. Standard resolution, standard dimensions, photographed from same distance, cigar next to an iPhone -- for size comparison) to make it easier to collect thus data. Also, it would be nice to have the library link to a database of customer/forum reviews. Just some ideas I have.

Cheers

That sounds GREAT! Search would be helpful, but I really like the "shake and select" option. Keeps me from getting into a rut, and reminds me of the sticks I have hidden at the bottom of the humi. :banger

Well, it took me way longer than expected to get the new version of Mobile Stogie done, but I hope it was worth the wait. Version 2.0 now has a pretty useful search function (one of the most requested features). Tapping on the search icon will let you quickly find cigars in the reference or in your humidors. It will search any text string that you enter against both brand and name fields. It is a 'live' search, where the filtered list updates as you type each character.

What took so long was trying to optimize the code so that it performed well enough on the 1st gen iPhone (a much slower device). I spent a LOT of hours restructuring code to keep memory low and speed as good as possible. I think I got it figured out, and I think you'll be happy with the result. A few other things snuck into this release too. Here's the update text that I submitted with the app:

New Features:

Added SEARCH function for Reference Cigars and Personal Inventory (Number 1 requested feature!)
Segmented cuban cigar reference by 'Current Production', 'Special Release', and 'Discontinued'
Added many more cigars to the reference database. Now contains reference information for 3,543 cigars.

Bug fixes:

Fixed a problem where a humidor with an apostrophe in the name could not be emailed.
Fixed a problem where cigars with special characters could not be looked up in the web search.
Fixed a problem where cigars with an apostrophe in the name could not be edited.
Fixed memory leaks in certain rare situations.

It looks like Apple is doing a much better job these days of reviewing apps, so this should hit your update screen sometime soon.

As always, feedback appreciated :tu

Short answer is yes, when you sync your iphone, the database is backed up :tu. So for example, if you get a new phone and sync it to a backup of your old one, it will be all set. A more formal "import" feature is oft requested, still a tough one to do though.

Hard for me to say exactly. When you sync your device to iTunes, it backs up your data and you should be able at any time to restore your device from that backup. However, it sounds like your iTunes library is now rebuilt, so likely that means your app backups are gone too. In that case, I assume you'll be glad you emailed your inventory to yourself

I wish I had a better answer, but I'm guessing you'll know soon enough.

If, as I said before, I want to go back to having a life, I can hope that somebody will build an app that blows Mobile Stogie away (hell, I'm a cigar smoker first; an app developer about 6th :D)

I just looked up the cigar, then in the bottom left corner there is a filecabinet or something like that Icon. I then hit it and it says add to humidor or add to wishlist.

Finally getting some real traction on the Review section of the app. Here are a couple of teaser screenshots:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/Review1.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/Review2.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/Review3.jpg

First, the individual record for a review. Note the middle icon on the bottom of the screen; there will be a whole section where you can view, sort, and search for your reviews. There is more text, and other fields further down on the screen when scrolling...

Next, the screen for setting the ratings for Appearance, Construction, Burn, Flavor and Overall. Just a quick tap or slide on each row will set the ratings and fill in the stars...

Last, the familiar text box for notes will now link back to the detailed reviews instead of being hidden in the My Cigars section. This will make it much easier to find all of your reviews, and read through the details...

Lots more to come, but thought I'd get some early feedback ... for example, are those the right categories to set the rating values?

My plan is to initially release an update that allows you to save your own reviews, and email them. A followon release will link to mobilestogie.com to share reviews from the app, and download others' reviews as well. Hopefully, it will grow into a good reference source for choosing your cigars while shopping at the brick and morter or online stores :tu.

Feedback appreciated....

They are in the MRN, I'll send you the page number this evening when I get in.

Its not a new size however, they are repackaged production cigars produced for a vendor. However as a collectability thing, they should be diferentiated.

Hey Ken,
I don't currently see this as an option so I'll pose it as a request.

I don't know if this ability is in there or not, but I was trying to create seperate entries for Fuente 858 Maduro, Natural, and Claro since I have all three and they are vastly different in flavor.

OK, so my question/suggestion....
In the reference section, during the edit function, as a part of the 'Done' (save) function, can we chose to save as a new cigar? Or possibly have the choice to copy and edit at the beginning?
All for the reasons above. I'd like to create a new cigar without losing the one that is being modified.
I know we can add new, but editing a copy and storing as new is a big time saver.

That's a good idea, and should not take too much for me to implement. I'll take a look. In the meantime, most people just tell me which cigars are missing from the reference and let me do the work :). - Is there a limit to the length of the review? Some of us write more than others.

What categories would you add? Which would you take away? (that's the type of feedback I need :)). I want to set it up consistently for everybody (so yes, folks will need to adapt), so that I can then link it to an online database to be able to share reviews. If I have it all customizable, then there will be less value in the sharing aspects (not to mention a nightmare to code).

If you look at some of the online review sites, they tend to keep it pretty simple. I had one for "value", but decided to drop that... thoughts?

As for length of review, you'll be able to add quite a bit of text (no current limit that I have in mind). As long as this remains iPhoneOS only, then it will be limited by your patience to type on the device ;)

Another question: is there value in setting up "First 1/3", "Second 1/3", and "Third 1/3" in addition to "Overall Comments"? So many people tend to do reviews that way, but it might be overkill for an iphone app....

I think a possible addition would be the ability to export reviews on their own as well as add those fields (minus the text ramblings) with the inventory .csv files.
That way your inventory exports could be rated on reviews.
The reason for allowing stand alone review exports is so that one can exports all of the detail, as well as text ramblings, for possible review uploads (see SilverFox's Cheap Stick reviews).

I use Apperence, Construction, Flavor, Value and Overall Experience then I average them together. Thats what works for me. I also don't review solidly by thirds so I don' think you need to do that.

However I am in the minority prolly.

Yeah, but they are buried and somewhat useless there; it was always meant as a stopgap until I could spend the time to 'do it right'. In the new version, you'll be able to browse and search reviews (eventually other peoples' reviews too). Should make it much more useful.

This is absolutely what I have in mind. Initial release will allow you to email any of your reviews from within the app. You could then use that for uploading whereever you want. I'm checking into how much work it is to have them use html formatting (as an option) so that they would be nicely formatted in the email. But, I have to trade off the amount of work with actually getting something released ;)

I think I like those categories the best (I'll probably trade "Burn" for "Value"). And I think I'll try to make the thirds optional, so that you can just type the whole review in the 'overall' section, or tap an icon to open up space for breaking it down by thirds (either that or have it a preference setting).

I always knew the design part of this would be much harder than the coding

What an awesome program. Spent all day yesterday loading my inventory in, looking through old receipts and trying to remember where everything came from.
My question is what is the best way to marked a cigar as smoked. Seems there is 2 ways; reduce the number by 1, or create a humidor called smoked(but then it is still counted as you have it). Can anybody help me with this?
And also when an update is released how do I get it, I'm using a Touch.

Thanks

Right now, you can create a "Smoked" humidor, and then move cigars to it. But I would reduce the qty to 0 in that humidor, so they don't count overall.

I am working right now on a complete 'review' section, where you can capture ratings, notes, photos, etc. in a completely separate area of the app. Taking a lot longer than I expected, but progress is being made :tu

When an update is released, you'll see a numbered 'badge' on the app store icon, indicating that one or more updates are available (updates are free, btw).

Hope this helps...

Ken, Thanks for the quick reply. What would also be cool would be able to know when the last time you smoked a certain cigar. so when you marked them smoked it also keeps a record of the last time you smoked it.

Thanks again for a great app!

Simple answer is that when you drill down to the list of cigars for a particular brand, any that you have added yourself are shown in a slightly different font (little darker color and italic). From that listing, tap the "Edit" button on the top right, and you'll be given a choice to delete any that you want.

The more complicated answer is that if you have cigars in your humidor linked to the cigar that you added to the reference, then you'll have to re-add that cigar to your humidor (since it now has a different unique key). Unfortunately, I never created the capability to 'switch' to a different reference cigar (on the list of things to do).

Hey Ken, how are things goign for my favorite app developer?

Too busy. Lately I'm only getting a few hours per week to work on the next version, so progress is slower than expected. But, I'm still getting in a cigar a few days a week, so can't complain :)

Surprising how complex it can be to manage images in the app, such that performance is what people expect, yet easy to use. Adding images is easy... managing them is challenging. For example, if you review a cigar in the app and add photos, how to manage going back afterward and editing that review, deleting photos, potentially adding another photo from your camera roll, etc., etc.

Fun stuff, but slow....

Just got it myself.. Noticed it was missing a few cigars I had. Like Padron 44th and 45th.. Maybe I could be blind, but I added em myself.. heh.

Other then that. I'm having fun digging though what all I have.

Yep, good call. I'll get 'em added. Picked up a 45th myself recently :tu

I searched through the post without finding an answer - but is there a plan to have this come out for Zune or Blackberry (preferably Zune)?

Gator, did you have a Iphone 3 and upgrade to the 4? I did that Friday and am trying to figure out how to import all my cigar info onto the 4. I'd hate to retype it all in.

Same here.
I had to select all my apps again for some reason, but the data was still there.
I didn't have to reselect the apps for my wife's though, which was kinda strange.

I've been rocking this for about 3 weeks. I absolutely love it! Its great for me who just started my sticks hobby to track all that comes in and out of the humis.

Hey KenS. I've had this app a while now but am new to CA. Can I make two suggestions?

1- allow photos of each cigar in the cigar details. Either a photo I can take or a stock one of the actual stick.

2- allow personal photos of each humidor

3- allow an add/submit option. Fir a stick that's not in the reference, allow a user to add it to their stash And also submit it to you for further review and future updates.

4- a user rating system shared by all users. Have the option to review or rate a stick, submit and be able to view a collective user rating of each stick in the reference library.

I love your app brother, it's awesome. I just thought these additions may make it even better. Hope you agree.

That's where my problem lies. I didn't restore the settings from the old phone to the new. I might have to try tonight when I get home. Hopefully the old stuff is still there.

If you right click on your iphone in itunes, it'll have a drop down menu to restore from backup, which should allow you to choose which backup to use.

Ken, love the app, i use it an love it... The only thing that i wish it would have is a place to put a number. For example i number every cigar going into my humi, that way if i have bought say 4 oliva g this week and two months from now i buy 5 more, i know which one was bought and when. Just a suggestion. Either way thanks for an awesome app...

Yeah true, but i was thinking of if you could look in your humidor inside the app and sort it by your own custom number. Like that... but either way is an awesome app..

Just loaded my cigars into the app. Very cool. I wish I would have had this a while ago so I could better keep track of things. Very nice and even more useful than I thought it would be if that makes sense. Love the ring gauge tool!

Any word on when the next release is??

Unfortunately, things have slowed considerably over the past couple of months, because lots of things are changing for me (all good though :tu).

My lovely bride and I just moved from Michigan to Seattle; bought a new house, selling our old house, selling our boat, her starting a new job, me interviewing for new opportunities, etc. etc.

Fun stuff, but I've had to take a bit of a timeout from Mobile Stogie work (and have barely logged into CA, only to see if anything pops on this thread). Also in the meantime, there is a guy "in the business" who has expressed interest in buying the Mobile Stogie code and extending the app.

Just a lot going on at the moment, so little progress on updates. I absolutely will get back to it soon, so I appreciate your patience...
