What are some of your favorite craft beers?

Never had a bad beer from Stone, Victory or Three Floyds ... and I've had quite a few. I've had more than 1 stinker from the likes of Dogfishhead and Sam Adams.

Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is probably my all-time fave craft beer.

60-minute IPA from DFH is outstanding especially on draft but find the 90 and 120 less than stellar because the bitterness makes them hard to pair with a cigar.

Brooklyn Brewery has a great Black Chocolate Stout.

Southern Tier has some great beers like Choklat Stout and Unearthly IPA.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo is pretty good as is Sweetwater 420 pale ale.

I love most Belgian beers such as Malheur 10 and Saison DuPont and LOVE Chimay Blue if it gets a couple of years on it. Also, the Chimay Blue in the 1.5l seems to have better flavor.

Unibroue Anny Brews and Ommegang make great beers too.

I just cant quite bring myself to drink mass-produced beer anymore.


And if anyone in socal wants to do a trade, I REALLY want to try Russian River Pliny the Elder IPA.

And Sean, I have a bottle of Bitter Choc Oatmeal Stout with your name on it if you want to do a trade (we are neighbors since I live in the tri-cities).

While you're getting socal brews, you need to get a bottle of the Alesmith Speedway stout, standard version or oak barrel. Or both. I had a Secret Santa hit me with one of those (standard) a few years back and it was outstanding. I haven't had the pliny the elder, but I've heard great things. From what I understand, Bob McDole, a famous homebrewer, won the Sam Adams Longshot contest with a pliny clone. We have the longshot 6ers in Kroger now. Close as you can get without a trade from one of our friends from socal. The other 2 beers in the 6er are an OK nothing special bock and a downright scary cranberry wit. YUK. What a shame. At least I can cook with the bock.

I haven't had that Stone but I'll work something out (PM coming).

Save for a couple of those breweries, they all mass produce beer. InBEV, Miller-Coors and Pabst just do it on a larger scale. Bottling lines, multiple fermentors and brew kettles make for "mass production".

Unless you're drinking beer you made yourself, or a small brewpub/brewery operation you're drinking "mass produced" beer.

To be a craft/microbrewery you can only make 15,000 barrels or less of beer a year. Miller and Bud make close to 100,000,000 barrels a year EACH. I think there is a difference there. For every one barrel of beer a craft brewery makes, Miller and Bud will make 14,000. I hope this will help you put "mass production" into perspective.

So we have a thread about craft beer started by someone other than you and you want to get into a semantic argument about what does or does not constitute mass-produced? Not to be nitpicking to you but this seems like a thread jack to me.

To add more perspective, a US beer barrel is 31 gallons. A craft brewery will make 465,000 gallons of beer a year. Bud will make 3,100,000,000 gallons. Add in Miller and you have 6,200,000,000 gallons a year. Thats only 2 of the big beer producers. For every 1 gallon of beer a craft brewery will make, Bud and Miller will make 413,333 gallons.

Oh, and I have multiple fermentors, multiple brew kettles, I sterile filter, artificially carbonate and have a bottling line (although I normally keg). So I guess I mass produce beer.

They finally made the Pliney clone? They couldn't do it last year, SA simply couldn't get the hops needed during the shortage, so McDole opted to have them wait rather than use hops they could get; I've been waiting all year for it to hit the shelves!

Yep. Its in this years Longshot 6pk. I tried it last week. I didnt think it was that great. I hope the one bottle of Pliny that I have been saving tastes better
