If you're riding a bike or driving in a convertible, the wind can catch under the bill and bye bye hat. Wearing them backwards in those two cases will likely allow you to hang onto your lid. Other than that, I haven't a clue either (unless you're a U Boat skipper ).

Airflow dynamics. I lost a couple in my old Triumph. Also had a ragtop VW that damn near blew your hair off.
