Gruden could coach, but everyone has their own professional choices. I am sure he didn't have a shortage of head coaches around the league offering him positions on their staff.
I am hesitant to say that a former coach will make a good commentator. It seems that there needs to be some seperation from the game before jumping back into calling games of people you used to coach against. Plus, wasn't Kornheiser the color-commentator? Not sure Gruden fits that role very well, because he certainly won't be play-by-play, but I am sure he will have good insights. I will withhold judgement until I see him cover a game I suppose. ![]() Quote:

I think back on all of the folks who have called MNF through the years: Howard Cosell, Dandy Don, Tark, Gifford, Al Michaels, Madden. Kornhieser just never belonged. I was never a big fan of Cosell, but there have been some greats on that broadcast through the years. Though I think Gruden will be a good step up and will certainly bring an interesting perspective, I doubt he'll ever attain legendary status. I think in two years he'll get another gig, maybe in college, and be gone.
Patching into the stadium play by play announcer would be preferable to Kornhieser, but to be fair I think the same thing about a lot of sports broadcast teams. Too much talk, too much pedantic puffery.
