If I remember correctly you don't have to be as old as Peter to have experienced a cigar on a plane. You could smoke on international flights in the 90's. Although I was to young then.

Ive smoked in a Cessna at 6500 feet before... Havent done so in several years, as there is some concern that the smoke can damage the avionics through contamination and tar accumulation... All of the planes I fly nowadays are placarded for no smoking...
