I've been a trucker for years. The modern Cobras are not nearly as good as the older models. All made in China now. I still own an older American made 29. An 8 ft. steel whip will also outperform the plastic antennas all day long.

Whats a good brand for whips. Ive heard alot about firestick but I dont know much. I dont need the best but I want it to be good and not limited to under a mile due to cheap equipment

It really doesn't matter much what kind of antenna you get if you are not going to mount it properly. Mounting on the hood with the angle brackets or in the bed "like everyone else" are not the optimum placements. Ask the guy who is going to tune it for you. Center vehicle and high is the best.

I've been running CB's since the early 70's and really never noticed any difference between one steel whip or another - it's all in the tuning with them.

Cobra, Uniden - are okay. One of the easiest setups I've run was a K40 with a Firestick. Currently I have a Galaxy which I think is the best radio I've had. Great performer. Texas Ranger makes some great equipment also. Came down to them and Galaxy when I bought mine.

Really I would say to ask the guy who is going to install it and tune it for you to suggest which antenna is best matched to the radio and your vehicle. Picking something cause it's pretty or popular is not the best route.

Back in the mid 70's, I used to work at Radio Shack part-time. This was one of those periods in time where CB's were a hot item. You just couldn't keep em' in stock it seems.

The firestick was mentioned above, how would dual antennas work as opposed to a single antenna as far as output and reception? I only say that since a truck appears to be in the future for Smokey

Problem with duals on a pickup truck is that the mirrors now days are plastic/composite which creates grounding problems and the spread is not normally wide enough for a good tune.

Well, that makes sense. Gone are the days of metal...
