Perhaps some BOTL pilots can expand. I would think it impacts the blades on the engines which in turn cause the engine to shred as result of its own debris being sucked in.

Probably more than one bird. If you go through a flock and suck in several birds under take off(full power) conditions its possible to knock a blade off. And once one blade goes its over..
