Question for people in constant high heat weather.

Hey Josh, living in Phoenix has me contemplating a strategy for keeping my cigars cooler in the summer months as well. I think for me I plan to get some big reusable freezer block things to rotate in my Coleman every week or so because my house never drops below 78. This coupled with freezing will hopefully prevent any beetle issues. Eventually I want to get a wine cooler.

As for the 20 questions, I can relate. I tend to ask first search later as well. I just try to keep it in check and be as humble as possible when I do it. Personally I haven't had much luck using the search feature, but it's probably user error.

Also for me I think it has a lot to do with the social aspect of opening a dialog with people. I like the interaction. Again though, it can lead to frustration for others when they feel like they are answering the same questions over and over. Even though these topics are new and exciting to you and I, it's old hat to the veterans of the forum. Michael gave some good advice about limiting it.

Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that I can relate.

If you're freezing all your cigars for at least 3 days prior to putting them in your humi you should never have a beetle issue, regardless of how high your ambient temperature gets.

This will cause condensation problems in your coolerdor.

Keeping cigars in a warmer climate is what I'm asking about.

Guess it could be related to beetles though.

If you freeze them to start with you dont have to worry how warm they get afterwords?

That is correct. Freezing == No Beetles.

However, humidity changes with temperature so you still need to keep your eye on things...

It depends on how close they are to the reusable ice blocks, but yes it might cause condensation issues in the bags too.

I thought that too and will maybe store it in a gallon ziplock and/or possibly wrapped in a dish towel.

This dish towel will just become the breading ground for mold. That ice pack is a novel idea but all I see is trouble. Only way condensation isn't a problem is if you have air movement and a way to absorb it over time and release back into the environment. Otherwise you just fight a constant battle of removing it yourself with paper towels or the like then adding water to beads or other humidification device when you go low.

Unless you are freezing your cigars keep them away from ice -- you are only making problems for yourself otherwise.

Freeze your cigars when you get them and 78 degress won't matter.

The edgestars retail for around $200, usually with free shipping. You can find scratch and dents as low as $100. With about another $40 in beads and you have one mighty effective humidor in a hot climate that for the cost and it stores a lot, say 18+ boxes of cigars.

Think about it this way. At a $140 you are forgoing buying only one box of the cheapest cigars you like and protecting everything you have now, plus everything in the future.


Drawers, shelves etc can come latter.

Second, sorry to burst people bubbles, but freezing is not a 100% pest exclusion method. You are kidding yourself about any pest to ever think that any pest control method is 100% effective. However thourough and below 0 freezing is highly effective on all insects and given the prescence of tobacco beetles is already low you are further lowering the chances to as low as possible to make an outbreak inprobable but it will always be possible.
