Driving an older model Dodge Ram w/ a Cumins Diesel around Boston, I got this kinda thing A LOT. I left the truck idling for 20 minutes to warm up and charge the battery a little and the neighbors called the cops, no joke!
And yes, more than a few times they ended up eating my black soot in payment
