This is the hardest part of layoffs IMO. No unions involved at my job but the layoffs are still heartbreakingly arbitrary. Hence my career change to nursing. Even in today's economy, I have yet to hear of nurses hitting the unemployment ranks.

Never mind my performance reviews or anything...I was costing too much money, thus I was expendable.
