Signed up for my first 5K Run

A friend asked me earlier this year when I started walking if I'd do a 5K. I figured I'd at least walk it, not sure about running on a 4-time surgically repaired ankle. Fast forward about 6 months and I"m now regularly running. Last night I did 2.3 miles after doing a 45min cardio workout. So another friend of mine posted something on FB about a couple 5K's in the area, one the day before Halloween. The registration and check is in the mail. Can't wait. This was actually the first goal I set with my CDE after I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I hadn't officially done one but have walked many times over 3.2 miles. Now that my ankle can take the exertion of running I"m going to run the entire thing. Who knows, maybe I'll look at 10K's and possibly a half marathon for next year. Gotta keep setting those goals.

Congrats, Bob, kick some arse! :tu

Only way I would run 5K is if there was a free, all-you-can-eat smorgasboard at the finish line.

Good luck! You should be very proud of yourself! (I'm still in the 5K Walk stage of life -- not sure if I am going to graduate to running anytime soon )

OH YEAHHHH! You will love it. The buzz and atmosphere around the race cannot be beat. The nervousness before it starts and the party afterwards are always a good time.

Enjoy!

I see my registration check was cashed, so it's officially on. Now to figure out a costume to wear for the run. :D

Pops if you ever find that 5K I'll be right there next to ya :tu

Congratulations Bob. Best of luck to you bro. Give me the word and I'll be waiting at the finish line with cigars :ss

Hmm, hadn't thought about a cigar for the finish. That would be funny.

EXCELLENT! Signing up is 75% of the battle IMO.... It is something I am always having to do. No event, usually means no training on anything but the bike for me....

I look forward to hearing how it goes!

Just got back from running my first official 5K run. What a blast. This was the Big House, Big Heart run in Ann Arbor, MI. You start/end at Michigan Stadium, with the end coming down the tunnel onto the field, then across the 50 yd line. I"m hooked. It helped alsoto have the nice motivation in front of me. Whomever created the skin tight running pants women wear, I'd like to thank that person. :D

Official times will be posted later today. I think I'm somewhere around the 30min mark.

Re: Signed up for my first 5K Run

Congrats, I recently ran a 5K about a month ago. I wasn't really competing, I was only there as moral support for my wifey. I just went in cold without any training or practice runs at all. I'm not in shape whatsoever, but really good at pushing myself when there's competition.

I jogged the first 1/3, mixed walk/jog the 2/3, and walked the last 1/3. One thing that messed me up was they had markers along the way that said "1", "2", "3". I jogged to the "1" and figured that was 1km instead of 1 mile. So psychologically I was giving up by the time I was at the "2" since I thought that was 2km's instead of 2 miles (had I known I was nearly done at that point, I would have jogged the last mile+).

Next time, if I don't get practice time beforehand, I'd like to walk it with a cigar in hand and cup of scotch or rum. LOL

Here's the official timing results.

Age group - 75 out off 259 28:03.6 9:03/M
Overall - 1352 out of 6144

Guess it pays to follow those college coeds. :D

Congrats Bob. Not to shabby time either. I was "volunteered" into doing a 5k last year and actually liked it alot. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment just to know i could do it.

Yep, that was a big factor for me too. I think I"ll start shooting for 10K's next year.

Bought some new shoes today as my first set were finally wearing out after 5-6 months of use. Got a pair of Brooks Adrenaline. Wow, what a nice fit/feel. I tried on these first, plus some New Balance and Saucony's, but I knew right away the Brooks were the one. Went out and did 4.52 miles in just over 41mins to break them in. Now to keep going a little further every day. The plan is to run a 10k in the spring, then who knows where (half marathon maybe?).

Very nice shoes. I have a pair too, but now I mostly wear minimalist shoes. Go between Vibrams and New Balance Minimus

Not sure if I could run in shoes like that. Had enough problems with the ankle.

Re: Signed up for my first 5K Run

I think you owe it to the healthcare system in the US to live a less stressful life on that ankle. I do not mean to
be the only non-congratulator, but you see the medical device people's commercials where the guy is playing
tennis on his new hip, and I think that's BS. If you have a part put in you or a critical part of your body put
back together from parts and bits, you owe it to yourself to take it a little easier from here on out. not to retire
from life, but to use you ankle a little smarter. To me that is not running for excercise. Just my opinion

Re: Signed up for my first 5K Run

Believe me Brad, I'm watching how my ankle responds to the running. So far it's been good, mostly due to the weight loss taking stress off the ankle. Luckily I've only had to have a few surgeries on it to remove bone chips. No pins, etc yet and hope to never have to. Having invested in good shoes will also help limit any further injury. My old set was middle of the road and show it as I got about 300 miles out of them.

Right now though after many years of being a couch potato, I'm relishing in the fact that I can run as far as I've been able to.

Oh they definitely are not for everyone. If you don't strike with the ball of your foot I imagine they would be painful.

Re: Signed up for my first 5K Run

Ended up buying a treadmill yesterday. Made up my mind after dodging idiots the last few runs outside. Middle of the bright sunny day and I nearly got hit by some women who barely yielded for the stop sign.

After much research I bought the Precor 9.23. Got it on sale at Dick's Sporting Goods. Set it up today, got the Tv setup and went for a run. New PB for a 5K, 26:36. This should help me get ready for a 10k come spring. Did manage to run that far on Monday when I wanted to go for time and did exactly 60mins.

Re: Signed up for my first 5K Run

I read recently that less than 5% of Americans over the age of 20 jog on a regular basis. Far less than that 5% actually compete in a race of any kind. If you think about it in percentage terms, you're probably in the top 2% of all Americans at running. Congrats!

Ohhh yes...the "half." Ran one in '09. The physical side isn't too bad when you train-up (don't get me wrong, it will hurt), but the mental part surprised me. You're running for so long and your mind needs a way to stay occupied. I remember feeling really good up to the 10.5 mark, then I asked myself, "What the **** am I doing this for?" Then the crowd showed up with about 1.5 to go and I just "rode" them in...lol. You can get it done Bob, just put the work in!!!

D

Thanks Andre. I know what you mean about the mental part. I'm experiencing that right now trying to get past the hour mark, but I'm working on it.

Reviving an old thread of mine. Ran my first official 5k race this year. Set a new PR 24:41. Not bad for an old fart.
