Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

I somewhat agree with you Myles on the whole fat is bad for you mantra. Funny how the whole "low-fat" boom during the 80-90's lead to ever increasing waistlines. What was added back in after the fat was removed? Sugar. Too much sugar in your diet if not burned off get's stored as fat. Imagine that.

I think carbs have their place in a diet. Mostly for a western diet though, they're not as necessary since we lead more sedentary lifestyles. If we're not burning off the excess fuel, we don't need to take in as much. That's just my $.02. I'm not a doctor, but i did stay at a hotel last night, but not a Holiday Inn.

Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

Myles, have you seen the documentary, "Fathead"? It was meant to debunk the whole myth behind the documentary, "Super Size Me". It has some holes in it, but does bring up some good questions about high fat diets and how they could be good for you.

Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

I agree that complex carbs can have a place in a diet, for example an ectomorph who is naturally skinny and uses a lot of energy probably benefits from carbs as part of an energy source, but a guy like myself who just sits around all day in an office has no use for them, and if i did, i could still get them from healthy vegatables and stuff

ie, we all agree :)

edit: Bob i have not, i shall get it

edit 2: Scott, the new atkins (which i haven't read yet, but will) focuses a lot more on health, including besides much protein and fat, very many vegetables, its a revision of the classic atkins

Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

Been getting in some good workouts on the treadmill at the hotel. Did a sustained 10mins of running Tuesday night during a total of 36 minutes. Was able to squeak out 6-7mins of sustained running last night during a 32 minute total. Tonight I'm taking a break to let my muscles heal a bit. I could really feel it last night walking around town to find dinner.

Not sure what I've lost/gained, but I'm close to going down another belt notch, so I'm guessing I'm still losing.

I'd be interested in some of the books you've read Myles. Seems I've really taken a passion to nutrition the last couple of years and would like to learn more.

Thanks Dom. It's taken me a while to get there. I started out walking 2 miles at a time, about a 16:30 mi/min average. I'm now up to 3miles or so at a time, doing about a 14:45 mi/min avg. I've been doing some jogging too, but on the pavement, my ankle takes a pounding so I haven't done much. The treadmill has a nice bounce to it, so it's been better for the ankle.

Keep it up with your daughter and dog. You'll get there.

Running for me still can put a strain on my back because of my big a$$. Well, it's not so big anymore, but still causes a counter balance effect. :D

Excellent. :tu
It's been a long time since I read any of the Atkins stuff, well over five years. My brother-in-law and I both lost lots of weight, only to put it back on. It wasn't the diet's fault.
The "I can eat all I want without regard to portion" thing really got in my head, and if anything it just worsened my habits. I abused the mojo cause it worked. Once I tired with the diet, I regained all the weight I lost and lots more. Ugh. :)

Pretty much the low fat labels are a lie (at least with many products, especially salad dressings). They are lower in fat than other products but still very high fat content.

Today was Cardio Recovery day..kind of a waste of time in my opinion. I think in the future I will just go run 2.5 to 5 miles on Cardio recovery day. :(

Still going good.

I'll have a Fresca!!!
(On the other hand, no I won't. It has grapefruit in it. I understand that if I eat grapefruit with my Carbamezapine it'll kill me or make my noodle soggy or something.)

Fresca? They still make that horrid drink?

Actually, now that I'm older and have acquired a taste for diet drinks, Fresca might not be bad. I don't think they sell it around here if it's still in production.

I love it. Loved it when I was a kid, even. That and Diet 7up. They had a citrus drink called Rondo that I liked, too. It was around 30 some-odd years ago, I have no idea when it disappeared. There were two kinds, I remember just liking the one in the yellow can.
You want horrid? Try a Tab. No idea what's in that stuff, but I never could get it down.

Breakfast gets your metabolism going in the morning, Laura. It's a key to doing this. Protein shakes are great and there are so many varieties that you can make in order to keep from getting bored with them.:tu Keep it up!:)

I have a hard time with breakfast.
I get up at 4 am start work at 6 and my first blow isn't until 9
Thats when I eat, a full 5hrs after I get up.
The other morning when I grabbed that banana at the store before my ride in, I was out of my mind hungry by 7:30.
I don't know which is worse for me!

ashtonlady 05-20-2011 04:29 PM

Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

I am like you Dom, I would get up and get going then settle down about 3 to 4 hours later for breakfast. I have found that 5 oz of milk with a protien mix, I use the one that is part of the Biggest looser plan. This takes me until 11 to noon, I do this at 7am.

Thanks Laura.
I may look into it.
Can It be mixed up the night before?
I usually don't get home from work until 1 am and have to get up at 4am.
My wife packs my bag the night before because I'm usually a zombie.

Jesus, seriously Dom? That's a big problem right there. Is there anyway to get around this? Most people recommend 6-8 hours of sleep for effective weightloss. If you are only getting three hours of sleep, your body needs extra calories to survive.
If you can't work around it, good luck, but if there's anything you can change to get some more sleep each night, try to do so.

Proteins and fiber are your best sources to help keep that full feeling longer. And there's nothing wrong with eating 4-5 small meals a day instead of the usual 3. Keyword being "small".

Re: Losing Weight with Starscream

Good morning fellas.

Had my weigh in today.
172.6
Another 1.2 lbs
I would say I'm on track with both my long term and short term goals.
260 by July 4th
250 by labor day
I know that's only 10 lbs between the two holidays but I tried to account for summer BBQ season.
Anyway, I'm well on my way! :tu

Good work, Dom!!!

I'm at 208.2 this morning, up about 3 pounds? It's from not feeling well and not moving around most of the week. I just started feeling better yesterday and got some work in. Headed out there right now. Hopefully the weather and my body holds out for me. That helps lots. :tu

172.6 but your goal for july 4th is 260? Thats a big gain! HAhaHAH jk i know thats a typo

As for me, after a week on a sales trip, i was worried, and it was the longest i went since i started trying without weighing myself, but happy i lost about 2 lbs. Good thing too, because i thought i was on a plateau and was about to have a crazy cheat meal to try and remedy it, but now that i saw the 2 lbs off i continued sticking to it. This is the longest ive stuck to anything (almost 4 weeks now), besides the time i lost it all like 10 years ago

Going by the scale at teh hotel here, I"m up a few pounds, however I'm down a belt notch. Probably just the scale and that I'm closer to the south pole, so gravity is pulling me down harder. :r

Been eating better. Finding places that actually serve salads.

Don't worry too much Andy and Kirk. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

One tip for eating that I find helps me eat less is to put down my fork in between each bite, or food for that matter if eating in hand. It gives you time to savor each bite and time for your body to tell itself that it's full.
