View Full Version : Is there such a thing as a good tabletop cutter?

I've got a Palio (terrific) and a Xikar 009 Punch (also terrific, if not a little heavy), but I'd like to have a good-looking, functional desktop cutter.

Is there such a thing??

A CA search came up with only good-natured Palio vs. Xikar pissing matches. A Google turned up a handful, but not without their problems. There was a handsome desktop cutter by a company called Boston Cigar Cutter Company, but sadly they seem to have gone tits up. Maybe they didn't work as well as they look. The other desktop cutters I could find, like at Cuban Crafters for instance, are mostly priced too good to be true -- forty or fifty bucks, and without any ratings. Then there's one shiny behemoth, solid forged aluminum, weighs eight pounds, marked down from $900 to $325 and also without any ratings. That's all I'm seeing.

Has anyone here seen, or better yet, used a desktop they'd recommend? Or I guess conversely, seen or used one they'd warn against? Has anyone seen in person or used any of the desktop cutters I mention above? If so, what're your thoughts on them?

Thanks a million!

Can't say that I have but I know you can find all kinds of tabletop cutters on the Ebays...

Here is what I found that resembles the one at my local shop.

I have only used it once and had no issues. Maybe someone else can give more insight.

Ah. I'd seen that one also. Thanks, Zane. Thing with this one is, according to the description, it's for cigars 52-60 ring gauge. I'm most often smoking a cigar with a RG in the low to mid 40s. I rarely smoke anything larger than 50. So this tabletop cutter isn't for me.

I do appreciate that it offers both straight and cat eye cuts, it's attractive, appears well-constructed, and is reasonably priced. But I am puzzled why it's been designed for only large RG cigars.

Additionally, I've also seen a similar-looking stainless round tabletop cutter on both Famous and E-bay that says it'll accommodate smaller-sized cigars, but on Famous it's got two very negative reviews. Anybody familiar with this one (http://www.famous-smoke.com/stainless+table+top+v+cutter/item+21368)?

My Family years ago was in the Cigar Business and this is my Great Grandfathers cutter from his shop a long time ago never actually cut a cigar with it but I will one of these days. Its not really sharp I will have to take care of that but if I screw it to a table top it would work wonders, very smooth and steady cut... but nearly 100 years ago the made S*%T right.

Yes! My local B&M has a big stainless that has a lever with three different cuts. A large diameter, a smaller diameter, and a V-cut. The owner said he got it back in the early nineties and can't find another one. Hasn't sharpened the blade once and still cuts like butter.

I will take a pic of it tomorrow when I go in and post it here.

Corey, your grandfather's tabletop cutter looks great. What a cool heirloom. And Pete, nice that your B&M has a good functioning tabletop. But fellas, I am actually looking for a tabletop cutter that's available for purchase, like I said in the first post. ;)

Matt, I've seen that one and I like the looks of it just fine, but have you used it? I'd be fine with the v-cut, but did you see the reviews? Ouch!

Wow. That one's a beaut! Wonder if it works well. Doesn't say what kind of cut you get. For that money, it had better make perfect cuts forever! Has anyone seen this one before?

They stay out of them a lot but Famous also has a 4 hole version with the addition of 2 straight cuts. Bought one a few months ago on the Monster for under$40 delivered. Works pretty good and my shopping found nothing better under $200+. There are some really nice tabletops out there but very expensive.

Here is the table top I was talking about. From the early nineties and works flawlessly.

Same as the one i have that Famous usually sells for under $50 and cheaper on the Monster but they are currently out of them. They don't last too long when they get them in stock.

A friend of mine has this one and uses it on all sizes. Says it's not a problem. The sizes listed in the specs is just for the cutouts in the metal.

I suggest guillotine cutter as it is handy, double bladed and provides a nice even cut and can brought with you whenever you go. You can buy it via Amazon or even in local cigar shops.

Apparently we weren't looking in the right places. I'm telling you....Even at that price I'm thinking about getting one. These things cut really smooth on each type of cut.
