Hello Inmates, I just purchased P90X for the wife and myself. We are both in good shape but are looking to get more ripped up. What is everyone's thoughts on P90X? Thanks for the responses!:ze

I am surprised that there are not that many hits on this thread. The P90X infomercial made the product very appealing.

I haven't tried this yet but I have ordered the set with the chinup bar and resistance bands.
I have hit the gym on and off in the past and haven't had too much trouble losing weight when needed. What I haven't done well is come up with a complete program for myself for a total body workout. I think this led to my minor back injury a couple of years ago.
I have read great reviews from pretty much every site I can find them on. Even the body building forums have some great reviews on this system as a way to get cut and toned.
I will be changing jobs in April of next year due to the sale of my current company. I'm hoping to get in better shape but more importantly raise my energy levels headed into my job hunt. Feeling like a million bucks heading into an interview sure can't hurt.
I imagine like any type of fitness plan the majority of you success will be in the food part of the plan. I have had success in the past with this by preparing meals plenty in advance. Boiled eggs a carton at a time, family packs of chicken grilled on Sunday's, etc. That way when life happens and you're in a rush, it's more convenient to grab your previously packaged lunch over fast food.
I'm looking forward to getting this in!

We have this and it kicks our ass. My 15 year old baseball stud swears by it, though. It got him ripped, increased his core strength, and added pounds of muscle where he needed it to improve his bat speed. My wife loves the toning routine, and the "muscle mass" routine is pretty effective. None of us really enjoy it ;), but the program works. The food plan is not that tough--we normally eat pretty healthy anyway.
I had to take the last 6 months off from working out due to an injury (I'm old, what can I say...?) but looking forward--well, not really "looking forward", more like "anxiously awaiting"--the opportunity to start the 90 days again in January.

My wife and i are starting the workouts and nutrition guide January the 5th. We are pumped but are not looking forward to the strictly regulated eating suggestions.

I have that system and plan on hitting it up in the new year. My recommendation is (and what I'm currently doing) getting into workout shape. What I mean is getting your body used to cardio & strength-training. If you just start these systems; you WILL be sore. I made that mistake a while back and had to stop (yes, I was out of shape). My muscles were aching so bad I couldn't do the movements like I needed to.
It is a great system that will really kick you a**. Best of luck. We should start our own P90 thread! I think I'll fire that up start of the year. No pics until the end though. ;)

I am in pretty good shape but i know i will be sore because it is something different. Great idea about the P90 thread. Before and after pictures;)
Shouldn't you have asked that question before you bought it.:D (not just a grim, but a sh@t eating grin)
I didn't know what this was so I had to go out and look it up. Anything that can get people up and moving and making improvements is a good thing. With that said I do have my own little reservations about it, but hard to be critical without personal knowledge of the program. I'd really be interested in seeing the exercises in the plan. Are there big movements? What plyos do they use? Is there stability ab work?

I ordered mine on Dec-11th and I am still waiting on it. There was a shipping error but hopefully I'll have it early next week.
I've been hitting some light weights at home just to get through all of the initial soreness of getting active again. I'm fully expecting this to kick my butt!
I'll post in here as I get going on the program and give my thoughts.

I won't be doing their diet...Diets never really worked for me, however I did day 1 of p90x (I'm doing doubles, not the classic or lean) and it was very tough. I thought it was going to be a weak sort of thing...but I haven't felt like this since High school Swimming and Lacrosse seasons

I wouldn't recommend doing the doubles to start with. I know you are a youngin, but after a couple weeks of even the regular program you will be hunting for energy throughout the day just to do one workout.

As far as my experience doing it...
I didn't finish the first time for a few reasons (stupid excuses). I got pretty sick during at the end of phase two, was out of town for a couple weeks, then Christmas season, then out of town for Christmas and now I have a knee problem I need to heal.
I also made the mistake of not following the diet plan. The diet plan really IS key. Especially if you want to burn fat, but also you need the diet plan for the extra energy it'll give you.
It will make you sore, almost regardless of the shape you are in. When it switches phases, you will get just as sore as you did the first day again. You will get noticeably stronger for the relatively short time frame. The size will come more slowly, but the strength you will notice by the end of phase one, and then it really packs it on in phase two. Obviously I can't comment on phase three or the finish, but I have no doubts it would have been awesome.
Do the yoga, it actually helps and I could tell a difference from the couple weeks I skipped it. I skipped the first yoga of phase two because my arms were just too sore from the biceps and back workout.
Do the stretching most of the weeks. Yes, it sucks that you have an hour video on your day off, but the stretching does help.
Get plenty of sleep. I failed in this regard.
I wouldn't recommend doing much else physically exerting during the program (except married people stuff). I played in my weekly basketball game we have. I made my rest day fall on it but really I should have been resting. I'll probably make that mistake again a few times when I do it again, but I will skip basketball more than not next time.
Kenpo is fun, but kind of stupid feeling as well. I took tae kwon do when I was younger and the kenpo just seemed childish after that. It's as good of an aerobic workout as you make it, but it gets old after a few times. I think I'll make basketball fall on kenpo day next time so I can replace it if I want and still have a rest day.
Lastly, Plyometrics will destroy you. You'll hate it every time you do it, but you'll also like it because it is the best aerobic workout in the program and you'll be just exhausted afterwards.
I definitely recommend the program, but with the warning that it is a BIG commitment.

Enh we'll see what happens with the doubles since it does not get different until week 5. It'll mostly depend on my final class schedule and if I'll have time for the AM to do it. I've set a goal for losing 10 more pounds of fat by Spring break. This previous fall I'm down 25lbs as it is. I don't plan on skipping any of them since I've done yoga before and I always stretch before I do anything physical no matter what.
I'm not entirely worried for doing doubles or searching for energy. If it was anything like the energy consumption of swimming I think I will be ok. Thanks for the review though. Didn't mean to steal the thread =P

I just got started on this Monday night. It is royally kicking my arse. We did the first plyometrics workout last night and that destroyed me! I figured the ab ripper session from Monday night would have had some crunches or something but man that was a crazy workout. I need to work on my balance and flexability pronto to get the ab workout down.
I can barely move today and just getting out of my chair is a chore. Strangely enough I can't wait for the arms and shoulder workout tonight.

Each workout is anywhere from 45-90 minutes if memory serves me correctly. That includes warm-up and cool-down.
Hah... I remember the first time I tried this workout. I just about passed out. I had to stop halfway though. It is rough; but good. Get used to working a few weeks in advance (not light either; should be able to run a little bit). Then get used to the intensity. Gatorade & Motrin will be your friend!

Yep. If you read the manual (what? who reads the manual?) it says that you should already be in pretty good shape before you start this. There's a pre-P90X assessment you're supposed to do to make sure you don't have a heart attack or something once you start. Cuz I'm telling you --you might anyway, even if you're in good shape. :tu

It's been a couple months so I thought I'd bump this thread up and see how folks are progressing...
After recuperating from some "old age" injuries, I started back in to my P90X prep in January with some running and light weight training. Worked myself up to about 15-20 mi/week before relaunching P90X about a month ago. Going down the "classic" path, and decided that I would stick as close as possible to the nutrition plan. I had lost some weight since January but despite all that running, I plateaued and couldn't lose more past a certain point.
So now I'm in the "recovery" week of Phase I, and I'm pleased that I've dropped those last 5 pounds to break my targeted weight barrier :wo The cardio I started really helped prepare me for the P90X plyometrics, kenpo, and the general pace of the workouts. It is intense! I've always been pretty flexible but never done yoga before, but I've come to enjoy--well, respect--YogaX. I still hate Ab Ripper X, but I never skip it. Mostly because I like seeing Audra, :D but it really does help. I'm still too fat around the middle for my sculpted abs to show, but I can really tell a difference in my core strength. And at 46, who has sculpted abs anyway? Except for Mr. Tony "Freakofnature" Horton. The bastard.
I can see the strength gains on paper, since all of my weights or reps have gone up every week since starting. I still can't grind out the pull-ups--wtf, these guys are doing 100 in the Chest & Back session? Holy crap! But I substitute by loading up my lat pulldown machine with weights and performing the various exercises that way. I figure it's the same as using the bands and I can see a definite progression.
It's a ball buster, but I'm glad I finally started. Looking forward to more improvements over the rest of the summer.
Anybody else have anything to report?

I love P90X. I did it last year and got totally jacked...the best shape I have ever been in. With the wedding and moving I got lazy...time to start again. Before P-90 I am going to run everyday for 2 weeks to get in the zone, plus I do not want to start before my Flortida vacation. I have the pictures to prove how jacked I was :tu I cant wait to start up again!

Great going, James! I'm just finishing up Phase 2 (I took about a week off for vacation, so I'm off schedule just a bit.) I think coupling the nutrition plan with the daily exercise is key to this program. My weight has continued to drop, and my strength & muscle definition is better than it's been in years.

Sweet Gerard. I actually did P90X over a year ago and got my body fat down to 6%. Since then I have lost a lot of muscle definition and gained some weight. I am following the nutrition plan as well. I will have the results to the body fat test sometime tomorrow. Today is shoulders and arms...one of my favorites. :banger

I did the work-out without doing the diet portion. I already ate pretty healthy so I did not think I needed to go by their plan. I usually worked out at the gym for about an hour and then drove home and did each days work-out. After 5 weeks, I went from 150lbs to 142lbs. I really did not try to do it to lose weight but it happened. It leaned me out pretty good so I had to stop. :( It can be as intense as you make it to be, but the guy can get pretty annoying at times so I would just do it with the cues on and music off. Plyometrics is the best one I think.....it's tough.

When you guys did the P90X did you take any supplements or just follow the nutrition plan?
I followed the nutrition plan but had to supplement with protein mix and a post-workout recovery drink. In Phase 2 the plan called for 7 servings of protein/day, which is tough to get without the shake.
I did P90X for 2 months and the last week and a half of the two months I started running three miles every other morning before workouts at night. I lost about 18 lbs and then my knee got all messed up and couldn't work out for about a month. Just started day one again. When I first started I was 225lbs and my goal is to get under 200lbs then take a break and start again to get under 190lbs. I don't do the diet plan that well I am a picky eater but while doing the X i cut out sugars so no sodas, sweet tea, candy ect..
I do drink a pre workout drink, a post workout drink and some daily pills.

Me and the Girlfriend are starting P90X in the AM tomorrow, Just did all the grocery shopping, that was a nightmare! All the food and supplies aren't all that bad, the food is actually really tasty. I am hoping to get back down to my wrestling weight, but we'll see. I am an ex athlete and just kinda stop caring about fitness after highschool. So I am weighing in at 235 hoping to shred out at 190 at somewhere around 7% -10% body fat.

Well, I finally finished this stretch of the program and I am very pleased by the results. It took me a little longer than 90 days--vacation, being old, etc., slowed me down a bit. I'll spare you all the semi-naked before & after photos  but here are a few data points to show you my progress:
Start: 190 pounds, 17% bodyfat
End: 182 pounds, 12% bodyfat
Dropped almost 2" in my waist, gained 2" in my chest and an inch in each bicep. Added 4" to my vertical leap, tripled my max wall squat time, and I can now max out at 5x the number of pullups I did when I started. My resting heart rate went from 65 to 55, and my BP is now 115/65. As a runner my legs were always very muscular, so not much change there. I compared my exercise logs from week 1 to week 12, and I'm floored by the progress. Much stronger and more flexible in every category.
This program kicks ass.
In fact, I decided not to stop. :banger After taking the past 10 days to rest & recupe, I started Round 2 this morning! My goals this time are for 6-8% bodyfat, a 34" waist and much larger upper body muscle gains.
This is probably the best shape I've been in since college. Still have a ways to go to get to my ideal fitness level, but at 46, I am very happy with where I am.
I highly recommend both the exercise & nutritional components of P90X!

I wouldnt bother getting the beachbody items, you can get golds gym ones from walmart for cheaper and they are just as good. Yoga X days are the biggest time commitment, and the first 45 minutes seems like it goes on for freakin' hours as Jesse points out, but the second half of the workout is balance postures so it's a bit more sedate. If I'm running short on time, I just do the first half.

Congrats brother, make sure when you get the disks sit down and watch them it will help with the transitions between sets. Also give you an idea of what to expect. DO NOT LET IT DISCOURAGE YOU! like tony said you gotta bring it each and every workout no matter how tired you are, if you do that you will feel awesome after each workout. I am 1 week in so far and have increased my flexibility substantially, dropped 5 lbs of fat and have gained strength already. make sure you stick to the nutrition plan to a T and dont skimp because you need all the energy you can get.

Thanks!!! Since I haven't worked out in years… in preparation of P90x's arrival (and me not wanting to punk out), last night I did a 45 minute total body exercise download from exercise tv. I wanted to quit after 10 minutes, but I didn't, and today I can barely walk (I hate squats). I'm planning on doing some type of similar mini routine every other day until P90x arrives and we start. I've been playing around with our newly acquired chin-up bar and I can do a whooping 3 (my wife can't do a full one yet, but can do 10 real push-ups). This is going to suck very much! Oh well, I shouldn't have gotten so out of shape.
Question, are you guys smoking cigars during the 90 day exercise marathon? What about drinking booze?

Yes, although I don't typically have much time to smoke during the week, and I've cut my beer consumption to strictly weekends. I count beer as a carbs on the nutrition plan (although, it's not technically a healthy carb :D)

I have cut out all alcohol because with the sugars and carbs the way they work out for me a good beer sets me back like 3 days of workout... so not really worth it to me, and with as much as I am sweating and trying to replace with water it will dehydrate you quickly and make it harder for you to work out. I am still smoking cigars though with no problems there.

quick update, first week down with a loss of 5 lbs, I just got done with my second workout this week, and wow what i difference a week makes! I can do full reps + 5-8 extra compaired to the vid since I am doing lean to start with. My flexibility has improved drastically as well as my endurance. I can clear a whole vid with only breaks the video alots no more pausing and grabbing water 2-3times per vid. I love when things come together the way they are supposed to.

Day 1 completed. Just finished the core synergetics. I have to admit that it kicked my ass. Great workout though. Now, if I could only resist food, things would be ok.
My game plan is to do the first week to get used to it and start the diet part next week.
I am going to do the lean program. Diet to start after my conference. Liking it so far, even though it is a little humbling.

:tpd: Flexibility, strength, weight loss--all these things come from using the program as it's designed. I would suggest picking the Classic or Lean route and sticking with it for the 90 days. You'll be shocked at how flexible you become. :2

Not sticking to the diet could be a bad idea, these are intense workouts and if you aren't bringing in the right foods you will crash. Its a bad way to start a workout routine that is going to last a while because you will feel more exhausted than if you are bringing in the right nutrition and it could make you think twice about finishing the program.

Here is an excellent spreadsheet to track your progress if your doing the classic version of the program. I print out the sheets and write down all the reps during the workout and then type them in later. It's also nice to be see your progress each week through out the 90 days.

Yep, it's a killer 15 minutes--wait until you feel those hip flexors tomorrow! I couldn't complete the entire Ab Ripper workout without taking breaks until nearly the end of the 90 days. For some of the exercises I was only doing 10-15 reps. I've just now gotten to the point where I can do all 50 Mason Twists with my legs off the ground. Fifer Scissors still gives me problems, especially on Legs & Back day.
You know what's the best thing about the recovery weeks? NO AB RIPPER! :wo

Had a similar experience: we had already purchased the original program and were looking to pick up a second set of discs to keep at my stepson's other house (no DVD burner at the house.) We found a set on ebay, turned out that it was one of those fake vendor sites and that we had actually bought it from some company in China! The discs arrived as promised, though--only difference being that the packaging was backwards: you open the disc binder from the left, and Disc 1 is in the back.
beachbody.com has a number of fitness tools, including some spreadsheets/pdfs you can download that contain the workout sheets, fitness tests, pre- and post-program measurements, etc.
If you're looking for just the workout sequences for each week, let me know which program you want to do (Classic, Lean, Doubles) and I can send you the workout program order. Those might also be available on the beachbody forums.
You definitely need the meal plan, but the nutritional tools on their site do a good job as a substitute for the guide.

We do chocolate milk and bars because the bars are so damned expensive. We only buy bars when they clearance them at stores for .25 to .50 cents per otherwise they are like 2 bucks a pop. We also went to walmart and got some protein powder that is really awesome, I am doing laundry and on my phone now, but I will give you the name of it. For 2 people its like 14 bucks for a months worth of powder

I used BSN Syntha-6 protein as a meal supplement in Phases 1 & 2 of the diet plan. It was about the only way to get to the 6 or 7 proteins/day. Most any brand of whey protein will work, just depends on how your body digests it and what's your budget. BSN fits the bill for me. I mix with light soy milk for the little extra protein boost. Tastes great. For bars, I've tried a lot of brands and finally settled on Zone Perfect. It's not strictly a protein bar, but it's well balanced nutritionally (~210 cal, 15g prot, lots of vitamins.) The chocolate almond raisin are excellent. It counts as a Single Snack on the diet plan.
For a recovery drink, I get Endurox. Less expensive than the Beachbody brand. I go through about a container every 4-6 weeks. Anything with a 4:1 carb: protein ratio should work. I definitely recommend a recovery drink. Don't be put off by the carbs--your body needs them, especially after burning 600-1000 calories/workout.
It's not necessary, but I started using BSN's NO-Explode as a pre-workout drink about a month ago, and really like it. I've never used this kind of product before, but I love it now. It's especially helpful for my early morning resistance & cardio routines--hard to get going at 0530!
I also supplement with 2 MegaMan vitamins/day.
All of these products are available at GNC. Go the Gold Card route and you'll save big bucks.
Check the forums at beachbody.com. Lots of folks have alternate opinions, products, etc. Going through P90X the second/third time, this is what I've found to work best for me.

I am in a Financial black hole right now so had to put the eating plan on hold for the time being, but still working out. I am down another 3 lbs I assume it slowed down because we aren't bringing in enough calories. We opted to do the weight watchers point system for the time being that way we are still regulating the foods we bring in vs what we actually need.

Alright guys I am officially restarting next Monday. I originally started at the beginning of August and made it about 6 weeks before my herniated disk flared up and I could barely walk, let alone workout. I think I'm good to go now, at least after a handful of Advil. I am however not going to do Plyo because I believe the high impact of that workout was the cause of my back pain. I think I'll do the the Kempo workout twice a week to replace the plyo.

You can also replace it with CardioX. That disc is a pretty much a 45 minute compilation of all the other cardio workouts, including some yoga poses. The plyo moves in that disc are the low impact exercises.

Wow, congrats to your success!!! 2 1/2 weeks into it and it's starting to take a toll on me. Today while warming up I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulder. I was able to do all of the actual movements without injury pain, but it's kinda gotten me alittle spooked. Then after today's arm and shoulder workout my right hip flexer felt sore (maybe from yesterday's plyo?). If you are feeling so out of shape you would be deterred from starting or sticking with P90X then by all means get what you are comfortable with and do it. Make sure you don't get too comfortable with your plan though, make sure you push yourself and set realistic goals that you can complete. If you set yourself up for failure you will get discouraged. So I literally found a copy of this in the trash at my apartment building about 9 months ago. I don't have the hardware, but the CDs and manuals all appear to be intact.
Going to ask your advice on this one......
I'm trying to figure out how to get into this thing, because I want to get in shape. I've tried the gym workout thing in the past and never could stick with it. I'm a "go for broke or go home" kind of guy, so I'm either not going to do something, or I'm going to redefine the term overkill. Hence why this course appeals to me - Overkill at its best.
Good news is that it's overkill at it's best... BAD news is that I was a computer geek growing up and have the body to match. Very little sports in HS, sedentary lifestyle (with regards to exercise or physical activity). I'm not fat, I used to eat well and be a very lean 5'10" w/ 31" waist and 145lbs. (in other words, I have no muscle). The last four months have been pretty tough and my eating went to hell, so now I'm at a 34.5" waist and 160lbs... but I KNOW I can fix that in less than a month with diet only.
I don't have much weight to lose and I can do that with diet, so this is more for muscle toning (or muscles PERIOD), overall energy and stamina. The diet part of the workout will not be a problem, I have EXCELLENT self-control when it comes to that. The workout part on the other hand... lets just say I grew up with the "muscles hurting means stop" mentality...
Run a mile? whats that? Can I walk for half of it? Jogging for a block puts me out of breath, 3 blocks has me gasping. Powerwalking the mile into work, but my calfs will hurt so much later I might be limping!
So after that bleak overview... what do the resident fitness buffs recomend?

So after that bleak overview... what do the resident fitness buffs recomend?
I feel your pain, I've been where you are. I will say that P90x will turn that around entirely. I am more toned overall, and less flabby around the middle, than I've been in years. I'm not a huge guy, but I'm more muscular now than I've ever been. After two rounds of this, my resting heartrate is something like 48, giving me better cardio capacity than I've had since high school almost 30 years ago.
The program isn't a lot of fancy stuff. It's basic, old fashioned working out and eating right. And it works, if you follow it.
After sitting on my ass for 10-12 years, I was as concerned as you are before I started. So I took a few months to work up to a basic level of fitness. Running a few miles every other day, push-ups, sit-ups. Tried to get into a basic level of conditioning. I think that helped me, but I know a lot of guys that just jump right in.
As you can tell, I'm a big believer in this particular program. Mainly because I've seen the results. It's hard work and requires commitment, but if you want to get the "best body you've ever had" (as the infomercial says :D) this will get you there. Don't get discouraged with it. I'd also recommend setting up an account at beachbody.com--lots of helpful information and other P90x-er's on that site.

I'm kind of curious what hardware is required to complete these.
Seems the kit they sell has the software and some nutrition charts, but all the pictures show them using equipment like dumbells and what not.
Anyone have a list of what they use in addition to the DVD's?
The P90x fitness guide says
The following equipment is recommended for use with P90x:
Manduka Mat
Chin-up Bar
Dumbbells (ranging in weight from 5 to 70 pounds)
B-Line Resistance Bands (for men, they recommend a 3-band set including Magenta B4, Red B6, Green B8)
Heart Rate monitor
Yoga blocks
Body fat tester
Push-up stands
Of all that stuff, the minimum you'll need is 1) a set of dumbbells, or resistance bands and 2) a yoga mat (there are tons of floor exercises, and you'll need it for yoga.) That's all I used when I started out. The body fat calipers are nice to have if you're interested in charting your progress, like I was.
A lot of the weight training relies on moving your body weight around, so the program is pretty light on equipment. A pull-up bar is a big help, but you can use the bands to sub for pull-ups. I couldn't even do one pull-up until Week 10 or so anyway, so I didn't miss not having the bar (although now I'm doing over 110 pull-ups on shoulder & back days, so it's an important part of the program!)
Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.

Well after acquiring a sample disc, me and the wife viewed it and were pleased by the structure of how it worked. Very well made, easy to follow, up front and cautious, yet encouraging based on your skill level. Reading through testimonials it sounds like the collection of workouts and diet is a healthy approach to this. Also read that it doesn't really provide anything new, cutting edge or totally unbelievable, it just organizes the things that work into a nice package.
Needless to say after seeing some before and after photos on the web and looking at the nutrition guide which actually would be an easy transition for us considering our current diet. As well as the fact some of the recipes actually looked quite good.
We're gonna give it a go :tu.
Her the lean, and myself the classic.
I figure my hardest class day of the week for college is Wednesday so I'm gonna make that my day 7 stretch/rest day.
Gonna gear up on some of the essential equipment and probably start a week from tomorrow. Wish us luck :D

That's outstanding, Jordan--great committment to make to start the year! I just completed the final Fit Test for my second round of P90x. I'll post-up the details later, but I'll just say that I'm astounded at how far I've been able to come in strength gains & lean body weight in a little over 6 months. I've probably never been as fit as I am now, and I'm 46! Can only imagine what it would be like had I started when younger. :D You'll be impressed by what this program helps you do!

I'd be curious to read the details.
The funny part though is I'm not really out of shape.... yet. I weigh like 175 - 180, 5' 9", 34 waist. By all standards, I'm not unhealthy.
But I can feel myself being pulled out of that adolescent metabolism stage where the stuff I eat is starting to add a couple of pounds. Men in my family get very large very quickly in their late 20's and I'd like to prevent that before it even has a chance to start. The toning wouldn't be a bad biproduct either :D
My wife just wants to look good in a bikini. :r ... I think she has ulterior motives though... ie.. wanting to go on a cruise this summer. Maybe that can be the reward when we finish.

Let me give you the "Plyometrics Ladder of Progression," in CA Smilie speak:
Weeks 1-3: :pu
Weeks 4 & 8: :banger (there's no plyo!)
Weeks 5-7: :su
Week 9-12: :bx
Week 13: :wnr
So to summarize: it gets progressively better--more tolerable, that is--but never easy. I guarantee you'll be following them before you finish!

I hope so... felt like I got hit by a car.
I think the hardest part of this program is the diet. And it not the way you would think. The portions they have you eating of healthy food is amazing. I don't even think I'm eating enough, but I'm not hungry.
I had to modify the diet a bit since I'm a diabetic (ie.. needed more than 30-45 carbs a day lol).. but wow.. they had me making 8-10 ounce turkey burger patties. Those were huge!.

I really enjoyed the plyometrics even from the start, the one that kicked my butt was the yoga. For the first couple weeks I would drop out after 45 minutes and then I called it a "rest day" from there. I never finished the complete 90 days but I will tell you that I had huge results, mostly pull ups (started at 8 and stopped after 9 weeks with 37).
The diet was pretty rough but you can pretty much pick and choose from the menu but I got sick of eating the same stuff every week. Now when I want to lose weight fast, I eat a whole bunch of turkey lunch meat, fruits, and a crap ton of veggies, so far 6lbs. in one week, 20 more to go for the next 6 weeks.

I just modified it to my liking. I eat a special K bar for breakfast or a bowl of special K. (LOVE that cereal, so it's not even a punishment)
Lunch is typically a small sandwich or tunafish. Some string cheese or stuff for snacks. Then for dinner we get creative with healthy recipes mostly consisting of pork chops, chicken, rice, trying some salmon tomorrow, lots of frozen steam veggies instead of canned to reduce sodium intake.
Cut down on the soda about 500%, but we drank diet before this. Switched it up to some crystal light and some carbonated water(little bad since they don't recommend it, but it's sodium free and personally I don't care. I'm not giving up everything lol. )
I'm full every night at dinner, but my stomach usually growls before bed. That's the hardest part is resisting that craving. But I enjoy my breakfast so much, that i have that to look forward to. Though tomorrow we're gonna try that chicken-basil egg scramble. That sounded quite tasty.
I'm actually impressed at the recipes. Some are quite good sounding.

Round 2 of Plyo today.
Day 9 and going strong. Added some recovery drinks for my post workouts and it alleviated most of my next-day muscle fatigue/pain. Not sure if that was a coincidence that I'm getting used to working out, or if it actually works, but I'll take it.
Blended a scoop of BSN Syntha-6 Chocolate with about 5 ounces of nonfat milk and some ice cubes. Actually tasted like a chocolate milkshake. :D
Obviously there are no real results yet, but I feel better day to day. More energy almost.

The soreness going away is a result of both your body being used to being so active, and the increased protein intake. If you're trying to gain muscle mass, I would raise your protein intake a bit, by taking a shake about 30 mins before you start your workout as well.
I used P90x for a few months, and it helped me get into better shape, but the workouts weren't really for me, since they really focus more on endurance than intensity. As a result I've started doing customized workouts, and have been getting much better results. Though I still use Interval X from p90x+ for my cardio.

Only problem I see with that is these shakes I calculated out to being about 20 carbs a piece.
I may start doing this on phase 2, but for now I think it might be a bit overkill.

If you're watching carbs, I'd switch to a low-carb protein shake, and just add a tablespoon of sugar for some after-workout carbs, which will help your muscles absorb the protein. :2

While I didn't and am not following the food plan, I'm pretty sure that if you're following the plan to a tee, sugar should not be added. But again, I'm not really following the food plan.

Honey or some fruit would be an acceptable alternative, and it's even on the "approved" list.
Although I think Jordan's aversion to carbs is more a result of his diabetes. My wife is insulin-dependent Type 1 and she doesn't do the recovery drink either, just deals with the soreness. Too tough regulating her insulin levels with all the exercise anyway. :(

Actually I've found the recovery drink is the perfect amount of carbs to ingest without insulin to offset the crash post workout.
20 grams of carbs seems to do the trick. I haven't woken up in the middle of the night yet since doing the recovery drinks. And I feel better the next day. Win win, but you're right, by increasing it to 40 carbs, I would have to take insulin, and with the way the body reacts post workout, even with a small dosage, I'd still crash. It's a fine line between a good night sleep and waking up in a cold sweat with shaky hands. Not fun :(
Also can anyone recommend a good daily vitamin? I got a nasty cramp in my side one workout after I sneezed. My entire diaphragm just locked up. I was in pain for about 10 minutes. I'm thinking that that might be a hint that I need more potassium, calcium.. etc.

Those things even safe?
Burning too much fat off at once would put your body into a state similar to that of ketoacidosis which is like remnant acids (leftver from the burning of fat) traveling through your bloodstream and digestive track causing pH imbalances.

I thought about using Hydroxycut, but didn't want to deal with the side effects. For me, the exercise program + the nutrition plan was all I needed to burn fat. I would suggest starting with the Phase 1 eating plan--it's called Fat Burner!--and following that for at least a month; I'd bet you begin to see results. Make sure you take measurements so you can chart your progress. GL!

Figured I would bump this thread, as I have read through it probably 8 times in the last 2 months.
Toward the end of the summer (beach season), I decided it was time for me to get serious about getting rid of the excess baggage I was carrying. No, not my wife :), weight. I decided to purchase P90X and commit to following the program. I decided I would do the lean version as my main priority was to lose weight. I have a touch of plantar fasciitis, and since plyo isn't part of the lean version (which I think plyo would aggravate) that also was a consideration for which plan to do.
All I can say is the program definitely works! I am a big guy, about 6'-5" and am generally athletic. When I started the program 30 days ago, I weighed in at 302.2 lbs. :(, and after the first 30 days following both the work-outs and nutrition plan have lost 20.6 lbs. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. I have already lost 3 inches from my waist and have noticed some increased muscularity, especially in my shoulders.
I didn't want to post in the thread until I had some results in hand, but to everyone who contributed to this thread, especially Gerard, thank you. It's always great to read about other's experiences especially when they are people you know, even though in most cases, only through the forum. :tu
My goal for the 90 days is to lose a total of 40 lbs. Fat comes off in layers, so for now, that is my only goal. If I don't reach it, I'm not going to be discouraged. I know that it is getting me in a lot better shape.
30 days down, 60 days to go. :banger

We were doing the program before our trip to Greece, and my wife developed achilles tendonitis. I LOVED the yoga. That was awesome. Loved the balance it provided, and I felt that my flexibility was increasing, which is a key for my triathlons. And yes, even though I was in shape from my summer races, the plyo still kicked my ass. I hope we can get back into it once she's healed. We were seeing some differences, but I was not following the diet plan. I'm not a dieter, so I'll just eat what I want.

Gerard, I picked up some Endurox R4 recovery drink (I think that's what you used). Two questions if you don't mind... it calls for two scoops, did you use two? And what did you do with the nasty floating cottage cheese looking stuff after it's mixed? I scoop it out, as it really is nasty!!! :pu
I tried a buddy's Gatorade recovery shake. It was a lot smoother and tasted fine. I might try that after I'm through the Endurox. The ratio isn't 4:1, more like 2.5:1 though.
Feeling good near the end of week 6. Down about 25 pounds. :tu
Okay, I have to admit--whenever I skipped ARX, it was always on Legs & Back day. And to be honest, I didn't feel too guilty about doing it either :D
Hmm, I never had any problems with the Endurox--just used 1 scoop to 8 oz water, and whisked/shook it up real good. The only time I doubled dosage was when I did an Insanity workout, but those were burning 800+ calories/hour, so I needed it.
Nice job on the weightloss! :tu

Day 60 update:
Weighed myself this morning, and I'm down 33.8 lbs since starting the program!!!!:banger As my waist continues to shrink, I find myself reaching for clothes I haven't worn in years. Soon, I'll have to buckle down and buy some new stuff!
I've definitely noticed appreciable increases strength and endurance while doing the workouts. Yesterday I did shoulders and arms for the first time since phase 1, and had to bump up pretty much all of my weight.
Eating right, working out 6 days a week. This program rocks. :tu
My problem with the Endurox was that I was stirring it instead of shaking it. After switching to a tupperware shaking container, the consistency of the drink became waaaaay better.

P90x is a much more balanced program than Insanity, it blends strength training & flexibility with cardio. As you know, Insanity is pretty much pure cardio. Guys I know who went FROM P90x to Insanity leaned-out and lost muscle mass. I would guess you'll find some increases in strength & size, especially in your chest, shoulders & back as those get big workouts in P90x.
As for the Cardio, you'll probably be bored with it after Insanity. It's nowhere near as intense, even Plyometrics doesn't compare to some of Shaun T's stuff :pu ;)

LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I cannot say enough good stuff about it. I am planning on hitting P90X full on here shortly and I will still keep Insanity at least 3 days a week. A big key to Insanity is easting enough. If you do their formula for caloric intake, I need to eat about 2700 Cal a day to maintain while on the program, so 2200 or so to lose weight. If you are eating healthy like I do, 2200 cals is a lot of food.

Exactly what I want. I am a bit disproportionate right now as I have massive Quads and hammys from years and years of intense running.
I need to find a good protein powder, any suggestions on a very good one that doesn't blow the top off on calories? Someone suggested Syntha 6, but it is like 225 cals in JUST the powder.

You might want to check with the guys in the "Pumping Iron with Zemekone & Icehog" thread for more suggestions from true gym-rats :ze :r but I've been using Syntha6 for years. I do 1 scoop in ~8 oz soy milk, and I think it comes in at just around 300 calories or so, I can't recall. But I typically use that twice a day (breakfast + mid-afternoon snack) as part of my 5-meal plan, so it works out calorically.

P90X rocks! I'm three weeks away from finishing my 90 days, and I'm within one pound of reaching my weight loss goal of 40 lbs. I think it's time to revise my goals!
Gerard, after week 10 and 11, I'm beginning to see what you mean about seeing results, aside from shedding pounds. I definitely have noticed some development, especially in my chest and back. :tu
I'm actually going to be doing a P89X, skipping my mid-week stretch, on the last week as my family and I are going to Disney for a week. I guess since I'm not going to finish, I'll have to start the program all over again. ;) Actually, after the holidays (while still exercising) I am going to start round two. I'm not even done round one, and I'm already looking forward to it.
P90X gets a solid two thumbs up from me. :tu :tu

I have completed 90 day P90X Lean routine, and I am incredibly happy, and even surprised at the results. In 90 days (well, 88 really) I've lost 50.2 pounds. Yes, five-oh. I am truly astounded. Seven inches off my waist. Holy crap.
I'm fitting in gifted clothes that I've never worn...punching holes in belts I've had for ten years...and feeling great.
Anyone who is considering P90X, I highly recommend it.
Now, a week's respite with the family in Disney (hence the accelerated last week), return for the Holidays...continue exercising and eating well, and start a round of the Classic version in late January/early February to get ready for the summer. I might just start it sooner I enjoyed it so much.

I started my second 90 day cycle today, doing the Classic version as intended. In the month I haven't been training, I've continued eating right (for the most part - Christmas and New Year parties....;)), have worked out some, but not as much as I hoped, and am starting pretty much where I left off in December...plus about two pounds. That should come off in a flash. :)
I'm amazed how a much a little time off can effect rep counts. Nothing drastic, but I hoped to be able to match where I left off in the first workout. Close, but not quite the same. I definitely struggled with ab ripper more than I thought, but I hunted on Saturday, assigning myself "designated driver" and if you have ever hunted through briars, reeds, cattails, etc., it's like doing dozens and dozens of different exercises. Crawling through the briars actually reminded me of dive bomber pushups. :r Anyway, my hip flexors and glutes were sore today from Saturday, so that may have affected my reps.
Good stuff...already looking forward to working out tomorrow. :tu

Plyo has a tendency to make you want to throw up. Very intense.
I like the plyo so much, that's literally the only DVD I do out of the set. I don't get into the kick boxing stuff, yoga, or the lifting stuff because I'm gonna wait until I get some actual dumbbells. Bands are too difficult because there's so much variation in tensions and hard to keep track of.

Week 7 of round 2...the more you do the workouts, the more strange things you notice. Today I did Legs and Back (for the 12th time total), and for the first time noticed that during Sneaky Lunges Tony loses count, and instead of doing 20 (like he says both before and after the exercise) we actually do 22! Bastage! :r
Still losing weight...not like the first time (as expected), but I'm down a total of 55-57 pounds. I'm not eating quite as well as I did during round 1, but still way better than before I started. Hoping for a total loss of 62 lbs or maybe even 67 when finished this round, bringing me down to 235-240 (I'm okay with that on my 6'5"+ frame)....probably would be easier if I hadn't start drinking craft beer again!:sl

I am on day 4 of week 3. This is my second go at P90X I started it a year 1/2 ago and got to week 5 and then blew out 2 of my disks in my lower back, and was out of action completely for about 6 months. I had lost about 20 pounds at that point but after the injury I could barley put a sock on my foot because my back hurt so much. I gained back all the weight I lost plus some on double cheeseburgers and beer while I felt sorry for myself. The bad eating habits continued eating 2 gigantic meals a day and not working out.
Within the last 2 months my back has really felt better, and I decided to see this 90 through. I am not following the meal plan but am eating 5-6 small meals a day, and generally eating more clean, and have given up the double crack burgers.

If the high impact bothers you, don't be afraid to do the CardioX routine in its place. It's still a hell of a workout. I did the Lean version the first time through (no Plyo, CardioX in its place), and have done the CardioX in lieu of Plyo two out of six times this time through (doing Classic). I have problems with my plantar fascia from time to time, and if it's not feeling 100%, I do CardioX. No regrets from me.

Did you hurt your back doing P90X or was it unrelated?
These two disks have given me trouble for the last 7 years or so, they would bulge out and be sore for a month, then the swelling would go down and I'd feel fine again, and then something else would happen and they'd bulge out again. This particular time it was the Plyo that did it. Actually it was a combination of incorrect technique plus going balls out on all the high impact jumps, and being too stupid to stop when I felt like something was wrong. This happened in September of '09. February of 2010 I went to a doctor because they hadn't gotten any better, and after a Prednisone pack, therapy, an MRI and thousands of upward dog type back extensions, it's pack to about 95%
I was really nervous about doing Plyo again, but I am overly cautious about my back this time, and modify some of the moves, and make 100% sure I keep my head and chest up instead of bending over on all those squat jumps.

A Christmas present to myself, that I hope I don't regret. From what I've previewed, lots more focus on athleticism, balance, sports training and core/synergistic strength. He adds medicine balls, a stability ball & a foam roller to many of the routines, but it looks like you can still get by with the stuff from the original. Still a heavy concentration on pull-ups, and some of the moves look like they'd be tough to do with bands, so I'm not sure how that works. Workouts are only 5d/wk, and they are all under an hour (including yoga!) Plyometrics is now called Plyocide. Lovely  The nutrition guide adds vegan & gluten-free plans, but generally still follows the same basic structure as P90x.

For the workouts I've completed so far, I'm finding that he includes a number of modifications with each exercise so that you don't have to spring for extra equipment. It's kind of ironic that in the original, Tony poo-poos the whole "gidgets & gadgets and things that don't work!" But in X2, he's using balance balls, weighted bars, medicine balls, a foam roller, and his own custom-designed pull-up bar. :2 talks, I guess :sh If you have weights & bands from the original, they'll still get a lot of use.
We fortunately already had a balance ball, and an 8# medicine ball. I picked up 2 6# balls, mostly because there are a lot of balance exercises that use them (pushups, etc.) My wife gave me a foamroller for Christmas, and it's surprising how well that thing works for warm-up, stretching & deep tissue massage. I would definitely recommend one now, mine's the Gaia brand, they sell a lot of yoga equipment. Pretty inexpensive but definitely worth it.

Heading to the doctor today :( After 3 weeks on Phase 1, I think I pulled something in my chest wall. I had been progressively moving up in the difficulty level of those workouts, and making some nice progress--couldn't do some of the stability ball moves in the first week, but now I can, etc. Last Tuesday I was going all out on the Total Body routine with medicine ball pushups, burpees, you name it, and I think I over-exerted. Right chest muscle & sternum are kind of painful now, wake me up at night, so there may be some ligament or cartilage involvement. That, or angina. Either way, it pisses me off. I was going with one more week of Phase 1 before switching up the program. We'll see.

That sucks, Gerard. I feel your pain, bro.
I had intended to start right after the new year with another round of P90X but have been having some lower back pain that I want to clear up before starting. Of course, having not worked out much lately may be contributing to the back pain, so it's a bit of a catch 22. I think I may suck it up and do some yoga, stretching and lower intensity workouts (CardioX) for a week or so and see if it feels any better.

It's a pretty good workout. Even in my better shape than a year ago, the workouts get my heart rate pumping and I'm drenched in sweat. From what I can gather, not as hard as P90X, but a lot of the moves from P90 are repeated in P90x.

Right chest muscle & sternum are kind of painful now, wake me up at night, so there may be some ligament or cartilage involvement. That, or angina. Either way, it pisses me off. I was going with one more week of Phase 1 before switching up the program. We'll see.
Gerard I hope you are doing better now! This program is giving me all kinds of new pains especially in my legs, hips and lower back so I have been doing alot of foam rolling but I am realy not sure if its working or not yet time will tell.

It's a pretty good workout. Even in my better shape than a year ago, the workouts get my heart rate pumping and I'm drenched in sweat. From what I can gather, not as hard as P90X, but a lot of the moves from P90 are repeated in P90x.
Did my first workout today in conjunction with my diet. This first week is going to be tough to get through!

I am loading up on the supplements as I get back into the thick of things when I restart this week:
BSN N.O. EXPLODE 2.0
BSN CellMass
Muscle Pharm Assault
Modern BCAA
Universal Nutrition Animal Packs
Protein:
Optimum: Cookies n Cream, Rocky Road, Caramel Toffee Fudge, Coffee, Cake Batter
BSN: Cookies n Cream, Mocha Cappucino
2 of the proteins are 5 # bags, so I figure 20# of protein should keep me going for awhile. :tu

Nice haul--although, don't NO Explode & MP Assault serve basically the same purpose as a pre-workout supplement? I used NO Explode for about 2 years, but currently use Body Rush. My stepson uses Assault. I think both are good products.

Thanks, waiting on the results of some xrays. Doc doesn't think it's cardiac, but is concerned about the positional nature of the pain--it's relieved when I move a certain way. In any event, he restricted my workout regimen for a week, so it looks like I'm in recovery mode. Lots of foam rolling, I guess.

Yeah, I'm not going to do assault and no xplode at the same time. It'll be the combo of one or the other for pre-workout and then cellmass for post workout. The BCAA I have is highly rated and even the optimum protein has some bcaa's already.

mmm, good timing. I've been debating adding P90X to help get ready for tough mudder...
I used p90x when I was getting ready for my tough mudder. Besides Tony Horton being annoying it really helped. I also added in weight training and a lot of running. As for the tough mudder it was great. I can't wait to do another one. :banger

I am seriously considering buying and starting the P90x and I'm looking for some advice from people who have used the workout. From what little I know about it there is a large emphasis on pull-ups. I have doubts about me being able to do pull-ups due to a shoulder surgery. Is there a heavy emphasis on pull-ups? if so does he suggest alternatives to pull-ups? If not, is the workout worth it if I have to skip the pullups?
Thank you in advance

Also, Would I be better off starting out with Power 90?

If I remember correctly, I believe they show an alternative using resistance bands.

I just finished the Yoga X for the very first time. Holy cow-that sucks. After doing arms and shoulders, you spend the first 45 minutes plus in stuff like downward dog and everything else that further reinforces how sore you are from the day before.
And seriously, who can do the stretch where you reach one hand between their legs and the other behind their back and grasp?

As an alternative, as suggested, you can use resistance bands. I used them almost exclusively when I started out, and still got a great workout. And seriously, who can do the stretch where you reach one hand between their legs and the other behind their back and grasp?
I couldn't when I started....but I can now! :D

I did my tough mudder in the mountains of Virginia. Don't worry about the shock it's at the very end. By the time I got there I just wanted to be done :)
Haha, it's funny to me that the thread is 3.4 years old and no results pictures.
Not that I WOULD post such a photo, I am not even in the pix of you smoking
thread. But it just struck me as funny. I can't do any of that stuff until I
can get my wind up. I either have LC or Emphy. I walk 5-6 miles a day on Friday
and Saturday and about 3 miles a day on four out of five of the other days. But that
seems to be my limit. I know I will never run again. I can do various workouts
with dumbells at home, too, but until I can lose my huge belly, there will be no
exotic workouts for me. Good luck to all of YOU though.

In the second week of P90x2 Phase II, glad to be hitting the resistance workouts again. So far still a heavy concentration on core strength with lots of one-legged & balance moves, even on the weight training days. Longer warm-up & cool downs, but focused intensity while training. Phase I was like Core Synergistics 4 days/week, with a 1 hour 1 legged yoga routine thrown in for fun.
Still good stuff, I'm making progress with my ability to do these very demanding exercises, and I'm already seeing results.

I had an MRI done last week due to the tingling I've had from my left shoulder down to my fingers. As expected, I have a bulging disc (didn't catch exactly where it was). Thus, I think I will be going a very light route of rehab before getting back into the program. :(

:banger Way to go, Bob! Stick with it, man! A word of advice I've shared with a few people...there's going to be a day when you don't feel like it, or feel tired, or are trying to talk yourself out of working out... do the workout anyway. You'll feel tons better after the workout and proud that you did it. Few workouts will feel better when you're done. Best of luck, bro!

Thanks Joel. I'll make every effort to do this program. It might take me longer than 90 days due to my work schedule having me out of town a lot. I am looking to transfer the discs to my IPad so I can take some of them on the road with me.

Did day three yesterday. Liked it. I'm thinking I need to postpone starting this routine though. I thought my shoulder had healed from a previous strain from working out. I reaggravated it after the chest and back disc. Last nights arm and shoulder workout didn't help either. I'm not using huge weights now so going lighter might not do much for me.

I think their needs to be an into section for each one of the workouts demonstrating proper technique etc. I don't know how many people would actually watch it, but it could be helpful instead of the "Hey everybody, we're going to bust our balls on Shoulders and Arms try to keep up while you do max reps of these with heavy weights! Just watch me for the next 4 seconds...and go!"

Lighter weights & bands (pull-ups) are definitely the way to go until you can get the movements down, and then even after. I could see big gains in definition & strength from sticking with light/mid-range weights through most of the routines. For example, I still have ligament issues at my elbow/biceps insertion, so the most I can wrestle with on 21s is 15-17#s because of the static move. Nothing wrong with lighter weights in these routines!

I was using mostly 25-35# for the workouts. I'll drop down to 15-20 for the time being until the shoulder heals. I'm also icing it which is helping.

Plyo was the one that actually did it for me. I've had problems with 2 discs in my lower back before, so I was predisposed to have problems, in addition to being too tough (stupid) to stop when things didn't feel right. That was in week 5 or 6 so it wasn't like I was trying to go all out right away.

I just finished day 14. From all my years of heavy lifting and sports, I will say I feel great. I have 2 herniated discs, 3 screws in one shoulder, and need surgery on the other. I use bands and really light weights. When it comes to anything I shouldn't or can't do, I mimic the motion in a non-hurting way. Remember your doing this to be healthy not get hurt. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the advice guys. After so many years of being out of shape, now that I'm in much better shape, it's almost become and obsession to get that look that I want. I just need to remember to listen to my body and go at the pace it wants. I'm not 20 anymore.
