I'm not weighing in until Saturday, but I've been doing great with my eating over the last week (even managed to stay clear of free pizza, cookies, and beer at a work function!). It's been a few days since I've been to the gym, but I'll be going tonight.
My body is finally getting used to the smaller portions... good thing too, because that growling stomach was driving me crazy!

Good job resisting the temptation, Kris. You are a better man than I, as I would have given in for free pizza and beer.:D

Been awhile since I've checked in. School's been keeping me busy. Anyway, I've kinda hit a plateau and have been sitting around 198 for the past month or so. I admit that I got away from working out, but I fixed that this week and am back on the workout bandwagon.

Up .2 here
Guess it's better than nothing.
As camping season rolls in, I expect that I'll get more active. Let's just hope it helps.
I can't be too hard on myself, as I'm not actually on an 'official' diet plan. But I need to do something.

I am finally home and loving it!!!
The days around my travel date were not so good so I was expecting to be up a bit. I was right. I'm +1 over last week, which is still not that bad. I'm also using a different scale that I would not consider to be as accurate.
In any case, it's my new starting point as the summer season kicks in.
Weighed in this morning at 214.8
It's getting a little easier as my body's getting used to the change in eating, last night I still had 150 more calories budgeted by 10:00pm and I wasn't even hungry.

I know its gotta be tough for ya Andy but don't do anything silly like giving up! It's not the ideal situation but every week you stay the same, thats one more week that you have kept the weight you have lost off. You know this already, but encouragement is always helpful!
I hit a major plateau when i was trying to break the 200lbs mark. I was stuck there for 5 weeks before I registered another 1lbs drop to hit 199. It was really tough mentally, but I just stuck with the exercise and tried to stay very strict with the diet and eventually my body and metabolism adapted and I started dropping again.
You will get there :tu

Weight loss plateau's drive me crazy... Stick with it, as long as you're still doing everything you've been doing, another loss must be just around the corner :tu. Keeping the good habits but changing your routine may help too. For me in the past I've been able to get out of plateaus by hitting the gym extra hard and/or doing something completely different at the gym than I would normally do.
I'm down to 209, which is well on my way to my first mini-goal of hitting 200lbs by my birthday in about a month!
Why does non-diet soda have to have so many calories? I really miss my (way too frequent) 1 liter Mtn Dew's :( :r
I am almost +/- 0 in the last couple of weeks (260lbs).
I stopped drinking coke last week and i went 5 times to the gym. Thats the most i have been in the last couple of years.
I am trying to go 7 times this week (4xcardio + 3xlifting). Next week i am going to do 5 x 45-50min cardio + 3 lifting workouts.
Getting up at 5.30 to do a 45 min cardio workout at 6 isnt as bad as i thought.
I also reached my benchpressing goal. I pressed 225 3 times.

On Sunday my girlfriend and I made a bet: if I can fit comfortably into my 34" pants from college (wearing 36" right now) by December, she'll buy me a box of any cigars I want, and throw in some other treats. I have never been so motivated.
I'm already contemplating salad for lunch.
Fortunately she didn't realize at the time that in order for it to be a proper bet, I would have to give her something if I lose, heh.

If you happen to be going to 24hr Fitness, check out their membership deal at Costco, it's by far the best deal around that I've seen. $300/2yrs if I remember correctly, with no additional hidden costs.

Sounds like a good deal, but only a local gym in my town. No big names here. They want $45 a month, but I hear they give state employee/teacher discounts. I'll have to check it out today.

Life is really hectic these days with no semblance of regularity. I don't have a regular weigh-in day any more, so I'll just post up when I do get a chance to do it. On the plus side, I've weighed in at 230 for the last 2 mornings, which is a 2lb drop since my last check in.
To get the weight loss for this summer, we should all agree to do 20 push ups for every piece of meat on the BBQ and 10 sit-ups for every beer. That should help.:D

Your muscles may be storing more water now that you are lifting. Dont let the number game bother you yet as long as ya are sticking to the plan.

I've been hovering around 230-235, which is not bad, but I'm not making any further progress beyond 230. I'll weigh in again on Friday morning and see how I'm doing.

Hows everyone doing?
I fell off my plan to diet for a couple months leading up to a family reunion on the 4th. Was back up 4lbs after a glorious night of 18 beers. I am going to seriously buckle down for the next 2 weeks here and see if I cant drop the 6lbs to get under 180 before the reunion. I may even try to cut out the booze for these few weeks.
Hope you guys are seeing some losses!

Still 216.2.
That's after a weekend of Fair food and I've been forcing myself to eat dinner every day. The only thing I can see that I've done differently in the last few months (aside from being sick) is that I drink about two gallons of water a day, whether it be coffee (watered down half-caff with lots of milk), or flavored water. Grape Aquafina and Grape Powerade Zero are my favorites.
I'm never without a 32 ounce cup around me, and I always feel like I'm in a desert.

The doctor gave me a choice last November ... lose weight or die. I'm 5'8' but I weighed 229. Had to look in the "big and tall' for pants with at 46" waist. Alright ... I looked like a walrus.
Been at this diet thing ... one reasonable meal a day and NO munchies (the real cause of my problem) ... for about 7 months now. Got on the scale this morning and was down to 158 ... yessssss ... that's 71 pounds. Kind of like I've lost a 4 year old.
I'm into 34" waist pants, and this morning I was able to get into some clothes that I haven't been able to wear for years.
My goal is 155 pounds and I'm just now starting to believe that I may really get there.

my plan for next couple of months is to go 1.5 times per day to the gym.
7x 90min-120 min crosstrainer/other cardio exercise.
3x weight lifting (1 day chest/triceps 1: back/biceps 1 legs)

I'm sick 90% of the day because of the pain and meds, so that helps. :)
I drink at least a gallon or two of Aquafina grape water, or just ice water, or powerade zero. I always have a 32 ouncer sitting by me and I drink it religiously.
I keep it warm and pour it over ice, so it's always watered down 50% or better. So it's really just water. Keeps me full.
When I eat, I really eat. The last 3 days I ate everything in sight, but really only one meal a day.
If I get hungry before 5:00, which doesn't generally happen, I eat a snack. Whatever I find first. It might be a candy bar or granola or jelly beans or whatever's sitting around. Doesn't matter. A couple bites settles my stomach so I don't get sick, then I try to eat around 5, then that's it.
If I get hungry at 1 in the morning, I eat a bowl of cereal or something.

I've been doing nothing but eating crappy and not exercising for the last few months. This week I decided to get back on with what i know i should do.. In life, a lot of the decisions we make come down to risk vs reward. To get healthy for me is almost no risk, with a huge reward of not getting diabetes, heart disease, heart attack and whatever else comes with being a fat ass :) It's hard because i love, and maybe i'm obsessed with food, and i hate exercise. But regardless, i started again, I'm vowing to walk at least 3 times a week, and i'm trying for more. So this last weekend I walked on Saturday and Sunday, and started following weight watchers again, and i'm down 3 lbs already in just 4-5 days. Here we go again ! *rollseyes* :D
Congrats on the 3 lbs and the recommitment:tu

205.6 this morning.
That makes me 20 pounds heavier than I was 13 years ago when my daughter was born. At 29 I was 185 and ripped. Spent every day at the gym.
Once the baby came, we laid around all day eating ice cream and getting hollered at by mom.
I promised myself by the time I was 45 I'd be in better shape than I was at 29.
So I set to trying. It didn't go well. Then I quit trying and gave it all to God.
Now it's going great.
I just got a new TENS unit yesterday and it's cut my meds in half. In a few more days I should be able to get back to doing something aside from staring at the ceiling in bed. :tu

Thought I'd jump on here...I've lost about 10 lbs in the last 3 months, but I have a new goal of losing about 7 more before the 28th of this month. I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I have a tournament on the 28th, and I want to be in the 170 - 189 lb division, rather than the 190 - 209 lb division. I'm at about 195 right now (give or take a pound). I'm only 5'8" and I'd love to be right around 180 - 185 lb walking around weight.
It's great to see you guys working at losing the weight, I love food so it's quite hard for me to give things up...but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

OK here goes I'm starting P90X next Monday, I hope to drop about 25 lbs. My biggest issue is going to be the nutrition plan, not because of what I'm limited to eating but how much and how often to eat. Right Now I eat 3 meals a day, one in the morning between 8 and 10, Lunch between 1 and 3 and my last meal usually at 10 at night. My other issue is I don't like to cook so lunch is usually a foot long turkey from Subway and supper is whatever I can scrape together in 5 minutes.
I'm going to the grocery store after work and am stocking up on everything that I'm going to need for next week and use Sunday afternoon to grill up tons of chicken breasts.

I decided to just go for it and started P90X yesterday... To say that it is a workout is an understatement. I convinced the fiancee to do plyometrics with me today.
I've stated the nutritional plan that goes along with the workout and I can't stop drinking water, I'm thirsty all the time, but I'm so full of water. Blah.

I'll never get that small again, unless I get sick or lose a leg.:r

I went to Kennywood Amusement park yesterday and ate everything in the world.
The day before I had a voracious apetite, too.
It's cause of this new TENS unit for my back. They say it works the muscles and releases endorphines like I'm getting a workout. Makes me tired and hungry.
It has really been a Godsend as far as the pain goes.
Today I'm back to normal. No appetite and I'm drinking my water. Go figure?
Still around 205, too.
I'd really like to get to 185, but I think I'll be too small at that weight.
I gained 3 holes on my church belt, and my skinny clothes all fit now, so that's a bonus. My wardrobe has really expanded. lol :)

Ok, so I've seen this thread around for a bit, but really had no reason to read too much into it. I still didn't read all of the 586 posts, but I understand this is where I need to post up and go for some moral support on this board. Here goes:
Started dieting Tuesday of last week (8/3) because my wife's doctor put her on a low calorie diet, so I too started cutting calories. As many have stated in this thread, it is easier with a support network in place and both of eating on the same type of diet will be less likely to sabotage the other. Her goal is to keep under 1200 calories per day, but I'm a bit larger and try to keep mine under 1400 calories. It has not been that difficult for me thus far, other than last weekend at my grandmother's and her offering ice cream with every meal (damn that sweet tooth), but I did not partake. Also started swimming yesterday. Signed up for the 7-day free trial of 24hr Fitness and did the tour thing yesterday at lunch and got in 150 meters in the 10 minutes I had to swim. Returned this morning before work with the goal of hitting 450 meters in 30 minutes, but was able to push it to 500 meters. It's a small victory, but I'll take it and push myself harder on Monday (might make it to the gym on the weekend, but it's not likely, still plenty of yard work and a garage that needs to be cleaned/painted so it should be no problem staying busy).
8/3
360lbs.
6'5" (not expecting this number to change, just throwing it in for reference)
8/13
349lbs.
I know that cutting back the calories, cutting out the fast food (still 6" chicken breast from Subway for lunch, but that beats the hell out of the 1090 calorie Bacon Ultimate from Jack in the Crack), cutting the junk food at home has been the biggest benefit. I already feel a lot better. I don't get that crash after lunch and have to fight to stay awake. So far I've been able to fall asleep faster and don't wake up as much during the night (unless my wife punches me in the ribs for snoring, I swear one of these days she's going to punch too hard, break a rib, and puncture a lung).
Thanks for letting me chime in and I'll update as I progress. Good luck to everyone in trying to maintain a lifestyle of healthier choices.

Thanks man. I'm used to the plateau that usually hits, for me at least, in the second to third month. My biggest thing is sticking to the diet and exercise and getting my cardio up. I want to be able to run the annual Jingle Bell Run (FW arthritis charity 5k) without slowing down. I have 4 months to get in shape for it.

I try not to diet per se, but watch what I'm eating in general. Usually the biggest thing for me is keeping my activity level up. I need to work the cardio and should start hitting the indoor track at the University. I don't know if I've ever run more than a km or two in one go. Might be a good thing to work on.
I should also get back into writing down everything I eat so that I am more accountable to it.

I'm almost finished with my first week of P90X. Honestly the hardest workout this week was the 1.5 hours of Yoga, yes Yoga. The nutrition plan is going well, it's a crap ton of protein, so I've been grilling chicken breasts a whole bag at a time, so I always have extra around. I feel pretty good, so we'll see in 3 weeks from now now much of a change it's made.

Not dieting as much as making much healthier choices on what I eat. It used to be fast food for breakfast and lunch and sometimes dinner. Now it's counting the calories I take in and making sure I don't eat as much bad stuff. Instead of a bag of doritos for a snack it's baby carrots; just changes like that. Also managed to swim 825 meters in half an hour this morning, which is up from 500 meters last friday and 700 meters yesterday. The time constraint is pretty rigid, so I just have to keep pushing myself to do more in the time I have. The thing that surprises me most is that I don't feel tired afterward, or at any point in the day for that matter.

Staying on the diet with the occasional hiccup, but have not gone over 1800 calories in almost a month now. I feel 100x better. Until this morning, that is. Didn't want to get out of bed. Spent all day yesterday at 6 Flags with my parents. My dad and I rode Batman 10x in a row to end the day. I don't recall the last time we had so much fun together. I took a pair of H. Upmann tubos to Shaq (he's my surgeon, looks exactly like Shaq) cause he told me a story about his wife wanting to smoke a cc on their honeymoon and he wouldn't do it.
I took a corona major and corona minor and explained one was a boy smoke and one was a girl smoke. He said "aren't these illegal?" I said "kinda. not marijuana illegal though".
Anyways, the first thing both of them said when they saw me was "damn, you lost a lot of weight".
Dr. Dave, the PA, hung out with me, we hashed over my iphone, I showed him the GPS software on it, and he decided he had to get it.
The last thing he said was "Dood, go f'ing eat something." :D

The weight loss has had a hugely positive impact on my back. Lots less pressure on the problems, and according to my mri's, I packed some serious grease back there.
I'm eating a lot more regularly now, and I've been drinking lots more coffee the last week, which needs to stop. That'll happen starting this morning. :tu

I just cleared mine up. Lasted two weeks. I had planned on starting back at the gym two weeks ago, but my cold decided otherwise.

Finally made it to the gym. My quads are sore as hell. I'm surprised at how weak I've gotten over the past two months. I did 3 sets of 10 on the hack squat at 160. I couldn't make it back up on the final rep of the third set. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.
I ate like a horse today (lots and lots of protein) just to counteract the soreness that will follow tomorrow, but I'm planning on cleaning my diet back up as well.

I'd be even better, but I had a date for lunch and ate a crab cake and 5 glasses of lemon water. Ate all the green stuff, too. It was at Ruby Tuesday's, it was good, too. :tu
The date went real well, too. A chick my age. Too smart and good looking though. She's got way too much sense to get mixed up with me. :tu
That post was from 6/15.
Turns out she didn't have all that much sense, after all. :D
Lisa and I were talking this evening about dinner and she mentioned surf and turf burgers at Applebees.
Somehow that came around to Salmon patties and crab cakes, and she mentioned the crab cakes at Ruby Tuesday's. I told her I thought I remembered having crab cakes when we went out "way back when".
Amazing how things change in a few short months.

Well mark that as a really crappy finish to the week. I managed to gain almost 8 lbs.
I think I must be retaining water. Could it be that time of the month again already?
On a positive note, I tried on the suit I got married in 9 years ago and it still fit. The pants were just a touch snug and the jacket was just a little tight in the shoulders. Still passable though, as long as this "water" comes back off again soon.

I'm going to jump into the mix...I've been a yo-yo guy since college in the mid-90's. I've tried Weight Watchers and Atkins and had success with both, but after awhile, lost interest.
I'm now 35 and was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in my lower back. I have 2 vertebrae with spurs that has compressed a disc against my lower spine which I will undergo surgery to fix that. It causes some numbness/tingling in my legs from time to time that I just attributed to being out of shape. The risk of doing nothing eventually leads to the function decreasing over time and once I lose something, it's not likely that I would ever recover from that. I'm hoping to get the surgery done with by the end of the month. As the doctor said, any additional pressure I can take off by losing my gut, the better off I'll be.
Anyway, I'm going to be doing Weight Watchers for this in addition to doing spinning classes at LA Fitness 6 times/week. I was doing the class regularly and then got out of the fold, particularly when I lost my job in July. Weight Watchers has an iPhone application that I just downloaded, so there's no excuse for me venturing off my plan.
Anyway, I'm starting on the plan tomorrow morning and will give this thing a go.

I started on a new healty diet about 3 weeks ago, as I needed to lose 37.84lbs before the surgeon would consider a gastric bypass. Since I started to eat more balanced and just a little less I lost 20.24lbs. All my nutrician did was make me have breakfast again, with low fat/low calorie toppings, low fat & calorie dinners and normal sized portions.
I also started to move a little more, I walk the dog of friends of mine two or three times a week for 90 minutes at a time, that's my exercise. I already feel a lot better due to the healthier food and the extra exercise.

Yep. The daily point allowances are based upon weight, regardless of whether you're a man/woman. The recommended weight is based upon height with no distinction made for men/women.

I did WeightWatchers a few years ago and I lost a lot of weight. I was down to 224 when my third child was born. What I don't like about WW is that they don't allow for certain things like weightlifting. You have to eat more to build muscle, but if you lift and follow WW, you're not going to bulk up at all. WW is for the average person, not for everyone. I'm just counting calories right now.
Down to 250 today. I'll probably be up tomorrow after eating all that fair food today though.

Not true-you get activity points for exercising and you can eat more as a result. You probably won't get big by any means, but it'll allow you to tone up and add a little muscle.

True, but I don't think that the activity points equal out to the gains that should be made in the gym. I think the activity points are geared more toward cardio and walking/running.
With that said, it's very hard no matter what you use to gain muscle and lose fat.
I'm not knocking WW at all, as it has been very beneficial to me in the past. It's just not what I need at this point in my life. I would recommend WW to anyone who is thinking about using it.

when you juice your fruit you're losing all the fiber and most of the water soluble vitamins. Much healthier to just eat the fruit whole. And because you're using more fruit when you juice than you would actually just eat, you're consuming way more sugar which will spike your insulin levels and could leave you feeling more groggy and hungry later. For the same reasons, juicing vegetables while still not as good as eating the vegetables themselves, is better for you than juicing fruit :p

For the same reasons, juicing vegetables while still not as good as eating the vegetables themselves, is better for you than juicing fruit :p
Myles, I read this about five times.
If the juicer isn't an extractor, it isn't removing anything. If Ferdinand is throwing in the same amount of fruit he'd normally consume in a sitting, the only thing that could make it better is to add a carrot and a handful of spinach.
That'd decrease the sugars by volume (which, contrary to popular belief, are not bad for you) and increase beta carotene and vitamin K, which is also great.
I couldn't see Ferdie's juicer from the link because it required a post code, but a juicer by definition does not extract pulp or fiber. It's a juicer.
I'd just use my food processor, personally, because I have one. :)
I seldom eat fruit unless my daughter makes me, though.
I suppose I eat a lot more than I did a year ago, but it still isn't much.

That'll allow me room to gain muscle weight and land at 185, where I want to be..
It's always my fault.:D

I think the answer to this question lies in what type of juicer is used. Some just squeeze out the juice, while others use the skin, pulp, and all to make juice.

I think you're right. That's what I was trying to say. :)
That's the difference between a juicer and an extractor. I use an extractor for making sketti sauce and jelly and so forth, and it pulls out all the skin and seeds and stuff.
I make smoothies in my food processor and don't lose anything.
I couldn't see a pic of Ferdie's juicer, I wanted to see what it does.
Regardless, I'm still not gonna eat banana peels and strawberry stems.
It's out of the question. :)

This one squeezes the juice out. But the problem is, I have to eat fruit but I nearly ever do. I do like to drink fruit juice though, so my nutrician said I could replace 2 pieces of fruit a day for 2 glasses of fruitjuice a day.
I'm jumping on this late but oh well. I've lost about 40 pounds from my heaviest while still gaining muscle and strength. The hardest part of losing weight is retaining and actually gaining that muscle while burning the fat.

That's the trick. Gaining muscle and burning fat has to be done precisely.

If you juiced them...........................added in a banana, it could be a new health phenomenon - peanut butter banana "juice" - on second thought skip the juicer, put it in a blender with a bit of milk and 3 scoops of ice cream! Oh wait..this is the wait loss thread not the weight gain thread :(

Today's weight was 230.6, down 2.9 lbs this week and 7.8 lbs overall.
Thought I'd share a recipe with you that I REALLY liked and ate twice this past week. One of the best meals I've ever had. It's a weightwatchers recipe, but will work for any low calorie type of diet. The only difference is that my wife subbed the corn flakes for bread crumbs.
Southern-style oven fried chicken
POINTS® Value: 5
Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 15 min
Cooking Time: 20 min
Level of Difficulty: Moderate
Ingredients
1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp table salt
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
3 oz buttermilk
3/4 cup(s) cornflake crumbs
1 pound(s) uncooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, four 4-oz pieces
Instructions
* Preheat oven to 365ºF. Lightly coat an 8 X 8 X 2-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.
* Combine flour, salt and cayenne pepper together in a medium-size bowl. Place buttermilk and corn flakes crumbs in 2 separate shallow bowls.
* Roll chicken breast halves in flour mixture and evenly coat each side. Next dip chicken into buttermilk and then corn flakes crumbs.
* Place coated chicken breasts in prepared baking dish. Bake until chicken is tender and no longer pink, about 20 minutes (there is no need to flip the chicken during baking). Yields 1 breast per serving.

I gain/lose 5 to 7 pounds every day.
I'm 188.4 right now, if I weighed in this evening I'll have easily put on five pounds. In the morning, I'm back where I started.

That's why I weigh in in the morning after waking up. If I weigh in the afternoon or evening, I'm always much heavier, which is why I assume the lack of sleep caused the big fluctuation today.:)

Andy, I checked yesterday to see how much I gained over the day.
Yesterday morning I was 185.2. Last night I was 188.6. 185.4 this morning.
So the swing is about 3.5 pounds.
I've gained as much as 7 or 8 pounds over a couple day period, only to end up right back where I started a few days later.
I drink tons of water. Aquafina Grape water, mostly. I can tell when I get dehydrated by watching the scale, too. Today I'll be drinking a LOT.
I find that when I'm drinking coffee I tend to not drink my water, so I've cut way back on the coffee again. That seems to help. :tu

It takes time. I lost at the rate of like 1.6 pounds a week for what seemed like forever. Now I pretty much bottomed out and ran out of fat to lose.
I've been back at Physical Therapy and working out and putting on muscle now, so I put on a few pounds.
