It's just like a cooler. :sh
Clean the inside.
Add 1lb or more of beads(HeartfeltIndustries or Shilala Beads from CigarNut)
Plug-in if desired.
Add cigars.
You can add accessories like shelves, fans and lights but none of that is necessary. :2

If you live someplace where the ambient temperature is quite high, 75+, you can plug it in and eliminate the risk of a beetle hatch destroying your stash-(P

All of this is in my own experience.
Advantage: Regulates temperature and avoids drastic fluctuations in temp. Most have a circulating fan that moves the air around slightly so you don't get humidity dead zones.
Disadvantage: Tough to regulate RH in my experience, seems to run about 5-6RH lower than my beads when I have it plugged in, also need to recharge my beads much more often. I use 70RH beads, so 65 is still optimum, not a big issue but it might be for some.

This brought up a question I'd never thought of before.
I've noticed that most wineadors use thermoelectric devices to regulate their temps. Does that imply that they will help in a situation where you might live somewhere cold and have trouble keeping the temp up? Wintertime at my new place isn't extreme, but I've noticed that the room I intended to store my cigars never really gets above 55 or 60 this time of year.
(Also, I spotted a used 16-bottle Cuisenart wine cabinet today for $35, and am wondering how to justify the project properly!)

There are no issues with storage at 55 degrees. Cooler temps will have no adverse affects. In fact many well known London merchants store their cigars in below ground cellars and have done so for decades. :2
