View Full Version : Dream humidor construction in progress- help?!

So a new co-worker and friend of mine Darrell happens to have experience building cabinetry / jewelry boxes / display cases ect.... I rough sketched plans to him and he became very enthusiastic about our project to build my dream humidor. I will do my best to describe the dimensions and design and I have/ and will inevitably have more questions... I'd love any and everyone's feedback in this endeavor....

DESCRIPTION: (to the best of my abilities)

The Humidor internal dimensions are Height:17in Width:18in Depth: 8in
The Humidor (more or less) consists of 3 parts,
--Base: containing 1 accessory Drawer (non humidified), Humidification bay, slotted overlay, and 8in wall for box storage, the Wall is of single slot and groove design upon which the next layer rests.
--Single storage: 5in wall with stops that allow top portion of humidor to be removed to allow direct access to box storage, this portion will contain 2 trays with the dimensions 2.5in x 18in x 8in
--Lid : Humidification bay of 1 inch for bead storage resting on slotted panel directly over single storage, then a 1 in hardwood top.

QUESTIONS: (HELP!)

1) Anyone know of a good place to get wood? (ha)
2) Does the inside HAVE to be lined with Spanish Cedar? or will just Cedar work? How thick of a lining?
3) Darrell thinks a 1/4 inch wall, and tongue and groove seals separating the compartments will hold humidity, anyone know/have anything to say about this?
4) What beads should I use? everyone on here seems viciously loyal to their bead brands.

ANY AND ALL CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS WELCOMED AND GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Thanks Guys,

Rob

First off just wanna say 2 things. 1 the project seems like a grat idea I cant wait to see how it turns out. 2nd I love Sylva. I just moved back to Florida from Brevard well Rosman to be exact but few know that lil place. I wish I was still in the upstate area.

As far as your second question is concerned spanish cedar would be the BEST to use. It last longer and holds the humidity much better. I myself have one of each. I would say that if you are gonna go for it then do it right and go for the spanish.

As far as wood is concerned there is a really good place here in orlando to get some. I will check into it on the morrow and let you know prices and availability. I dont know if they have a web site or not but its ok because you know ppl here lol.

Good luck and cant wait to see pics!!!!

. how big is too big? and how big is really necessary?

That really depends. How long have you been "seriously" smoking cigars. How many cigars do you smoke per week on average?

Do you plan on collecting, and or ageing cigars?

There is not hard and fast formula, its different for every person.

Maybe a cigar a day, sometimes 2 if i really feel it. But i admit I have a bit of a hoarding problem. I keep one stick from every blend I smoke telling myself someday I'll write a review on it... I am just waiting to finish the preparation of my cigar journal/blog.... so with my holding onto one of several brands I am already brimming 2 desk humi's way above capacity, but with robustos mostly....

I think my dimensions should hold about a 3 month supply with the ability to age specific sticks if i wanted to... or i could move ageing sticks out to one of the other desk humi's I already have...

I really want a wineador but my funds just wont cover it... Darrell says he can get this done just south of a hundred bucks.... throw in 50 for beads and an agreed upon "steak dinner" for Darrell's efforts and I think I can get this done for around 175... Which seems reasonable when i estimate the dimensions will hold around 400 sticks.... but thats a rough guess.... (anyone have a different opinion? )

So I don't know, Thoughts? Feedback? It all helps the cause....

Thanks Md4958,

Rob

1) www.woodfinder.com (http://www.woodfinder.com)
2) Spanish Cedar and Cedar are two totally different animals. Spanish Cedar is actually a hardwood in the mahogany family, cedar is a softwood in the cypress family. Spanish cedar gets it's name from the aroma of it's wood when cut, and that's where the similarities end. Cedar is so pungent that it will likely overpower the natural flavors/aromas your cigars within less than a year, possibly as quickly as within a few months. It's also debatable how well cedar holds a humidity range that is ideal for cigars. There can also be issues with the soft wood leaking sap. Best bet, just get Spanish cedar or mahogany to line the humidor.
3) I've seen it accomplished with a thinner piece, so 1/4" is probably fine.
4) Either hcmbeads.com or Heartfelt.com They work a bit differently but produce similar results. Each has some unique characteristics, either will serve you well.

Awesome pictures, Awesome Build... Anyone else have any personally crafted humidors they wanna share? I'm always looking for design ideas/ improvements...

So I get it... Bigger... My second design looks less like a humidor and more like an old dinner cart with caster wheels, and additional tray, and 8in more depth and height, my only concern is that once I get this thing built it will take a year to fill it... lol

My paycheck comes this Thursday, and we are going parts/supply shopping saturday, so I have to make a decision soon...

Any words of advice or encouragement always appreciated,

Thanks everyone & Good Smoke,

Rob

Absolutely, 100% use spanish cedar, and not "regular" cedar!

And I would recommend 1/2" thick, personally. Most cheap Chinese-manufactured humidors utilize 1/4" and it just isn't thick enough to do the job.

So let me start by saying I am in no way an architect...

But to show my plans better I drew the following plans... anyone who cares to look them over and provide feedback it will be greatly appreciated...

As for the bigger, much bigger comments, as the plans show this is a Modular system that can be expanded by adding extra tray housings, as it stands now, this set up is a good 7 times bigger then what I am currently dealing with so I feel it will do me well for now, but I did take your expansion recommendations into account and when space starts running low I will add space as needed.

So without further adieu, Here are my plans...

think of the tongue and groove portion for expansion as a "bee keepers hive" that allows for additional storage to be added... Maybe I should call it the bee hive humidor....lol

My pleasure, Rob.
While I am one of the owners and admins of Cigar Asylum, that does not make me any more of an expert than anyone else. There are others more knowledgable and competent in the construction arts. I just happen to know that regular cedar is bad for humidors.

I do look forward to the pictures.

In the last pic....I would not do the 45 degree "tray supports" personally, I think it would add unnecessary awkwardness to putting in and removing cigars, boxed or unboxed. I would just use a small (1/2") square stock type runners to support tray on.

If I am understanding your support frames, they would waste some valuable real estate. You may want to just run a piece flush with the side wall :2 Or even just a square dowel in each corner to rest on.

VERY QUICK QUESTION,

Does anyone know if red oak is an appropriate wood for the exterior? the only reason I ask is because Darrell says it is decently priced and we are giving thought to using it for the exterior... I ask because I don't want any smells or tastes to be transferred through the inlay wood to my sticks, and once again, I know nothing about wood or woodworking....

Thanks everyone for your help, a few quick replies to this question would be great seeing how Darrell and I are going shopping in about 4 hours...

Looking forward to your input,

Rest Assured... Ill be posting pics as we complete every step of the way... I used to be just a cigar on an occasion smoker...Then thanks to my neighbor and these forums I am now up to 1-2 cigars a day... This project is an undertaking so that I can improve on that... and have the space to store it all also...

Thanks for your interest Shawn... Ill be sure to provide many pictures....

More pics... a few days sooner then I had expected... Darrel made some more saw dust today...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8038/8024763784_7045e05338_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024763784/) Humidor 013 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024763784/) by Robulous78 (http://www.flickr.com/people/86665059@N08/), on Flickr

Here we can see my second layer... The humidification beads will go in the bottom in the 1.5 inch pocket between the base and this layer... when completed this layer will have a Spanish Cedar slatted bottom...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8024765579_62f0ff9720_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024765579/) Humidor 012 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024765579/) by Robulous78 (http://www.flickr.com/people/86665059@N08/), on Flickr

Darrel can sure make some good slots. you can barely make out the seams where these 2 parts will separate...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8030/8024765871_31ac325ff6_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024765871/) Humidor 011 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024765871/) by Robulous78 (http://www.flickr.com/people/86665059@N08/), on Flickr

On top of this section goes one more wall section attached to a lid... Darrel took this picture to show how my drawer will be flush with the front and side faces... We are going to get pop release tracks to run the drawer... so no need for a pull or other hardware...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8456/8024764548_e0913df512_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024764548/) Humidor 010 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/86665059@N08/8024764548/) by Robulous78 (http://www.flickr.com/people/86665059@N08/), on Flickr

My baby as it stands now... Darrel will start on the next 8 inch tall wall that goes on top of it next, followed by the lid... Which means I am getting ever closer to having to find Spanish Cedar without it costing me an arm and a leg... Anyone have suggestions? / Comments? I'd love to hear them...

That is where Darrel and I differ... he feels that all the outer hull needs is a few clear coats to accentuate the patterns of the red oak... I on the other hand feel a nice stain and some clear coats are the way to go... I have been looking at a few stains and what not... but if you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them...

Much appreciated... yea we took every piece of red oak that Lowe's had off the shelf... sorted our way through 20 or more boards and this is the winner... I just think it needs a stain to give it a darker color to match my bar... I haven't seen many "natural grain" finished humidors... I don't know if it will go well with the rest of my stuff...

If you're looking to have it match your bar then I would stain it a similar color:tu

Yea... well my bar is really dark... and given the moolah I spent on the wood I do want it to show some grain pattern... so I guess I am going to go with the same tone... just a bit lighter...

Well I do and I don't... Darrel is still working on it and has made good headway he says but he won't let me see it... I think he is going for shock and awe and I am completely ok with it... So unfortunately no pictures but he did say he ordered the lid hardware as well as the slides for my accessory drawer... Other then that we are kind of at a stand still till I get my money together for the half inch chat inlay... My estimates are 150.00 worth of it from Rockler so it might take a minute as all good things do...

Thanks for the interest! :)

GOOD NEWS!!!!!

So after 1 CRAZY, and let me emphasize CRAZY Weekend of running drunks back and forth from the hotel to the casino I have enough money to make my Spanish Cedar order from Rockler...

Placing the order Monday so Darrel will have all he needs to wrap up my box except for the finish and finishing touches...

Meanwhile I am starting to consider humidification options... I feel that with the money I have spent... Kitty Litter is definitely out of the question... So that leaves 2 options as far as I can tell... HCM Beads or Heartfelt...? Feel free to give me your opinions...

I'll be needing a whole pound either way... And I'll admit I am biased toward HCM beads because Shilala is a member here and I want to support a fellow Inmate... However, the pollster in me wanted to have some other opinions weigh in (forgive me Shilala)...

So there you have it... HCM vs. Heartfelt... Discuss...

Hi Rob.... It's good to see this......

As for the Red Oak... you may want to try what is known as "fuming".... this will darken the oak significantly without using stains.... Pick up one of those totes with a lid that your box will fit in. Then, using cool whip containers or jar lids or whatever you can find.... pour some amonia in them.... put the humidor in the tote, seal the lid and leave it be for a couple days...

The amonia reacts with the tanins in the oak.... and oak is heavy in tanins - and it will darken it up, naturally.... for a gorgeous look.

The ammonia fumes will disapate.... and not present a problem.

My example below is in White Oak.... but, I'm sure red oak would do the same....

This shows the tray removed from the bottom...

With 3/8's lining, and 3/8's thick trays, that means my sticks will be surrounded by 3/4's an inch of Spanish Cedar... I can't wait to see what that does for aging...

I AM SOOOO EXCITED.... I can't wait to see what Darrel has in mind for the finish... !!!

Robulous78
11-26-2012, 02:17 AM
So to give everyone an idea of where this is heading... on top of this goes another section the same height as the middle, which will have a catch and room for 3- 2 inch deep trays, then an inch thick 4 sided "breadboard" top with 3/4's inch recess and grate for upper humidification, and will have both a lock and a magnetic seal to be extra tight...

The bottom tray catch also leaves 3/4's an inch room for lower humidification as well...

another buckle latch will join the middle section to the top and the next section will have recessed handles as well...

1) Anywhere you can get it. My local menards actually sells spanish cedar, it's expensive tho.

2) You can substitute a little mohagany instead of cedar, but your cigars won't get that great cedar smell nor does it protect against worms. Regular cedar isn't very good, it doesn't absorb as well and has a strong woody odor.

3) I can't say for sure since I don't build humidors, but I don't think this would have too much of a problem. I wonder about how far moisture gets absorbed tho, you might have a little loss if it absorbs further than 1/4". PM Waxingmoon on these forums, Ed is pretty knowledgeable, he should know.

4) I'm not going to recommend one brand or another since this always leads to a fight on the forums. But both brands do their job very well. I will say tho that (Disclaimer: IN MY EXPERIENCE) recharging heartfelt beads is far easier than hcm beads, however hcm beads seem to last longer on a single charge, so take your pick.

I got to this late but you can lay a coat of laquer between the spanish cedar and oak. this will seal the oak. You don't want to do this to your spanish cedar..it would be nasty.

Everything else has been answered really.. If you build one in the future, check your local lumber mills. They will have a larger variety and you won't have to pay department store prices.

You can save money by using a cheaper wood for the outside box and lay veneer over it..still line with spanish cedar or another mahogany, though. You could buy some exotic wood, have your friend use a bandsaw to cut several thin planks and then joint/plane them..this will allow you to save money and use any wood you want for the exterior without breaking the bank.

Looks like it's turning out well. Nice project.

The Seasoning process... Lined with 1/4 inch Spanish Cedar... I gave it 1 good wipe with a fresh sponge and distilled water, then left the tupper wear of distilled inside with trays for 3 hours... then gave it one more through rubdown and again left the tupper wear of distilled inside... Notice the magnetic sealer strip Darrell channeled into the top... closes tight like a glove...

The following day I gave the 3 trays 2 separate rubdowns and then removed the tupper wear of distilled and placed the radio controlled weather sensor, verified to be accurate by another hygrometer, inside, allowing me to keep temp and RH tabs wire free and without opening the lid...

So there you have it... my collection all nice and neat... Makes me so happy... and as an added bonus I still have room for a bunch of box storage or an additional 4 trays If I want to have them built....

Thanks to all that have contributed to educating me in this <ahem> "pass-time" .... :lr I feel lucky to be a member here and to know you all...
