Here's the new digs....

Issue Number #1.....will the season even start on time. Bettman says that if there is not a new CBA on Sept. 15th, the owners will be locking the players out.

Fehr says the sides are "far apart" on basic economic issues.

I'm already nervous that things aren't going to start on time. After cancelling the whole 2004 season, can the NHL afford to do this again so soon?

No way the NHL can afford a lockout. They already struggle to get viewers. If this happens they will be losing a lot of money and interest.

Not looking good, who's at fault, the owners got everything they asked for last lockout now player salaries are up dramatically since 03, the rich owners are richer but the poor owners are poorer. The players (after feeling like they conceeded everything the owners wanted last time) won't be willing to make any concessions this time around. A lockout may be the only thing that saves a couple of the franchises from having to start cutting paychecks until ownership issues are fixed.

After the offseason the Wild have had, I desperately hope that it starts on time. People have been absolutely buzzing in the Twin Cities area since July about the team.

As for the league as a whole, they definitely can't afford another labor issue like they had before. The league is making a comeback in a number of markets, at least. But therea re those that it appreas to be struggling in. The question that needs to beasked is if those markets were viable markets to begin with. Move franchises? Contract franchises? What's the best things to do? I have no idea. I do think that realignment will help the league out, though. Bring back some of the more natural geographic rivalries (I have the old Norris Division in mind).

I'm with you on rekindling the old rivalries. Realignment is needed. Bettman doesn't get it though. I love watching hockey but it is primarily a regional sport. The league had the best product when it was a 21 team league. I doubt they can contract enough to get there, but eliminating two teams would help. 24-28 teams would be ideal. IMO the talent is spread too thin. That doesn't help the owners' position when it's time to negotiate. Guys who can score 25 goals are getting offered deals in the 9 digit range because there's no talent available. The poor wording of the existing CBA concerning long contracts is another reason. Any talent gets locked up for 10 years due to the lower cap hit. Maybe a soft cap like the NBA's is better. Not sure but trying to keep teams alive like the Panthers and the Coyotes look like a no win situation. If the league owns the teams, contract them, have a contraction draft and move on. End result is a better product. Problem is NHLPA won't go for it. Less players = less power/money for them.

The owners wants to get the salaries down. Right now players get 57% of the revenue. It's funny that the NBA was at the exact same place this past year.
NHL owners want to see 46%. That won't happen. 50%, like the NBA players agreed to, would go over pretty easy, I think.
Who doesn't feel that 50/50 is fair, right?

You're almost certainly right. I was just covering my eventual "What did I tell you" basis, in case it did happen. Realistically, though, I think it should happen within 5 years or so, considering the core of players and the upcoming prospects. (Hey, there's no "fingers crossed" smilie?)

At this point, I am just hoping they will be playing by Thanksgiving. :(

i am(and always have been)on the side of the players.

50/50 split...players will be lucky(really lucky) to get this after the nba settlement last year.the players and owners remain steadfast with there stance. and just exactly what revenues are they going to share.

this and a salary rollback appear to be the main issue...i know if i was offered a 23% wage cut(for the second time)...i would be willing to walk away from my job...forever.

where is the wha when you need em...time is right for a second pro league.

to me a perfect solution would be a 16 game season followed by the playoffs...regular season is way way too long.players would be happy to play 16 games at 500,000 per game.

Both sides are to blame. The players for their part in shaping the prior CBA. The owners and their GMs for circumventing the intention of the CBA with legalese to give themselves the best competitive edge possible. It'll never change. Laywers write the CBA from both ends, then the same lawyers are used to take advantage of it so that each team has the best fighting chance. End result is unsustainable 17 year $100 million contracts and teams losing money.

Contract the teams that the league owns. That's a start. Then negotiate from there.

No sport can afford another lockout, but the NHL especially cannot. I've always been a big hockey fan, and I think the past few years have generated a little more interest in the sport. But this would be devastating to that momentum, and it seems the lockout is inevitable. The owners are planning to lock the players out tonight at midnight if a new CBA can't be agreed upon (and its not looking good)

"If the league (NHL) continues to insist on their (demands), then it will take a full year. That's because we are not going to cave in," Ovechkin said, according to the newspaper. "Then I will spend the entire season in the KHL. It's an absolute reality."

Monday saw no changes from either side, as talks between the league and the NHLPA remain unscheduled.

If it comes to hardball the owners will win. Many teams are losing money as is, so a lockout means NOT losing money. For the players, they would be making a lot of money. I'm sure after a while that'll catch up to them and put pressure on the union to make concessions.

Players took a 24% paycut in 2005, now the owners want an even bigger paycut now...though league revenues are at an all-time high?

What would you tell your boss if he told you he was wanting you to give him a 25% paycut even though his profits were up?

ChicagoWhiteSox
09-18-2012, 02:06 PM
Operating Income for the NHL as a whole has been on the decline since 08 or 09. Also, in the current CBA, salary is capped at 57% of revenue. Compare that too the NBA which is 50% or even the NFL which is 48. I think MLB is even less. Yeah, teams like the Maple Leafs are operating in massive profit, well massive for the NHL, but you also have big time losses sourcing from teams like the Lightening and Blue Jackets.. Of course, full disclosure to the NHL's financial position would be great. It's hard to understand why no one has agreed yet, but with such a tiny scope at the NHL and it's position, I'm more inclined to say both parties are dragging their feet and need to hash this out.. It's going to suck not having the Hawks/NHL to watch this year:sad

icehog3

What was the issue in 2005 Tom?

This was the basic issue:

The NHL, led by Commissioner Gary Bettman, attempted to convince players to accept a salary structure linking player salaries to league revenues, guaranteeing the clubs what the league called cost certainty. According to an NHL-commissioned report prepared by former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Arthur Levitt, prior to 2004–05, NHL clubs spent about 76 percent of their gross revenues on players' salaries – a figure far higher than those in other North American sports – and collectively lost US$273 million during the 2002–03 season.

http://www.ctvnews.ca/sports/nhl-offer-proposes-50-50-revenue-split-1.997818

TORONTO - The NHL has presented a new offer to the players that it hopes will end the lockout and allow for a full 82-game season.

League commissioner Gary Bettman says the long-term deal will split revenues with players 50-50 across the board and takes steps to guarantee the players will get full value from their existing deals.

Bettman says under the deal the season would start Nov. 2 and each team would have one additional game every five weeks in order to get a full season in.

Bettman says the proposal is now in the hands of the NHL Players' Association. The union has requested time to look the proposal over.

The current lockout is just over a month old.

The season was to start Oct. 11, but the two sides were not able to come to an agreement before then and the first 82 games of the schedule were scrapped.

From what I have read about this offer, some of the problem with it is that the new CBA could affect some current contracts. So, they need to hammer that out, but I'm optimistic.

My Saturday this week is my oldest son age 7 has roller hockey practice with the Jr. Inline Sharks travel roller team at 7am, supposed to then go to Oakland 1hr drive to play a few ice hockey games 10-2pm with his travel ice team Santa Clara Blackhawks. Then hes supposed to play a game on his inhouse ice team that night 6pm. My son loves hockey and skates 4-5 days a week. He also does Judo with my oldest daughter who is 4. Trust me I am rarely sitting around my house. Cant wait till baseball season starts so we can try to squeeze that in.

No junior teams close by, Mike?

We have the ECHL SF Bulls. This is their first season, but its an hour both ways freeway driving. Other issue is no time and money is strapped with all the kids activities. The $20 per month for the package is about all I can afford.

The NHL announced the cancellation of more games on Thursday, this time through Jan. 14, as time is running out to salvage a season.

In total, 625 regular-season games, or 50.8 percent of the entire schedule, has been canceled.

More news will come Friday when voting wraps up among the 700-plus players who were asked by the NHLPA's executive board for authorization to file a disclaimer of interest in order to dissolve the union and attempt to have the lockout deemed illegal. Whether the executive board will file a disclaimer remains to be seen but it has until Jan. 2 if it gets a "yes" vote from players Friday.

During a news conference on Dec. 6 in New York after talks broke up again, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman suggested that anything less than a 48-game season would not be acceptable. Given that the league has said it is willing to push a season into late June, a 48-game season would likely have to begin around the third week of January.

World Junior hockey 2013, USA vs. Canada: Americans crush rivals, will play for gold
By Travis Hughes on Jan 3, 6:46a

Team USA cruised to victory over the rival Canadians, advancing to the gold medal game of the 2013 WJC.

The United States utterly dominated Canada in every facet of the hockey game Thursday morning, advancing to the gold medal game of the World Junior Championship with a 5-1 win over their rivals to the north. That is a rare sentence.

From start to finish, Team USA outplayed Canada in all three zones of the ice, leaning on a relentless forecheck, strong defensive coverage, great special teams and phenomenal goaltending from John Gibson en route to the victory.

Captain Jake McCabe opened the scoring in the first period, scoring two nearly identical goals on netminder Malcolm Subban from the high slot. The Americans kept on the gas pedal through the second period, being tested by just a handful of Canadian chances. Goals from Boston College's Johnny Gaudreau and Harvard's Jim Vesey opened up the lead to 4-0 as Subban was chased from the game and replaced by backup Jordan Binnington.

Binnington held Canada in the game throughout the second half of the game, making a number of key stops. It put Canada in the position to get on the board and try to make something of the game with a shorthanded goal at the 4:03 mark of the third, trimming the American lead to 4-1.

The goal shouldn't have counted, as a quick (and, it should be noted, incorrect) whistle blew the play dead prior to the goal. Gibson and the USA defense clearly stopped playing at the sound of the whistle, giving Ty Rattie an easy shot at the back of the net. But after review, the IIHF officiating crew allowed the goal.

Canada got their legs under them afterward, generating long stretches of possession and a number of quality scoring chances for the first time in the game, but Gibson was more than up to the task. He made 15 saves in the third period alone -- 37 total in the game -- and robbed the Canadians of point-blank chances on more than one occasion.

Gaudreau scored again off a stretch pass from Vesey with 4:19 remaining in the third to seal the victory for the USA.

The Americans play for gold against the winner of the semifinal matchup between Sweden and Russia, which will come later in the day from Ufa.
Canada, meanwhile, will play for bronze against the loser of that matchup. Both games are on Saturday morning.

The KHL came out today and said they would not let players with current NHL contracts to play in the K after the NHL starts. It wil be interesting to see where this goes.

Of course, I meant "can you blame him" because the Islanders suck so bad. :r

They'll never improve if even their average, past their prime players can't be bothered to play for them. It is a shame the way this franchise has been run in the past XX years.

About the KHL, even Kovalchuk was considering remaining there. I have nothing against Russians playing in Russia, but when thay have an NHL contract, they have to honor it. GMs, after all, put effort into drafting/signing/trading for them.

If you want to see the top prospects for the 2013 NHL draft, NHL TV will be airing the CHL Prospect game live on 1/16/13.

This one isn't like an "all star" game, and usually features hard hitting, serious defense and an occassional scrap.

Wait a minute. I will preface this by saying I have gotten into heated arguments about hockey being the most difficult sport to play given speed, skill, toughness required.

I have seen people play hockey drunk as hell, you could do pickup smoking a stogie, and I have seen couples playing together. While golf is not as physically demanding it is a specialized skill sport. No I dont play, but I think it is a sport as most every scrub cant go out and play effectively.

I would argue of all the sports football basketball and soccer involve the most basic of human skills running, throwing, kicking and catching. Children can do these things easily. Thats why they are thr most popular in my view. Anybody can go outside with a ball and play. Baseball requires more skill as does hockey and golf.

I wouldn't get in any sort of heated argument about it cause everyone's allowed to have an opinion in my book, and they're certainly allowed to keep it.
The "can you play it on a date or while you're smoking a cigar" rule is a great way to divide sports from games.
Flag football is kinda like football. You could smoke a cigar and take a date. It's still not a sport, it's a fun game. You can smoke a cigar with a date playing Yahtzee. It sure isn't a sport. You can't win unless you're good, or have "specialized skills". I know that cause Weeze whips my ass on a regular basis. It still ain't a sport. :)

When we apply the rule, it's applied in the purest sense. I wouldn't take a date to play men's softball. She'd get killed. I wouldn't smoke a cigar because I wouldn't be able to play. Sport.
At picnics we have pick up games of softball. Girls and kids play. Cigar smoking is not only present, it's encouraged. Game.

Ya gotta argue apples to apples, man. If ya jump all over the place I could make an argument for cake baking and putting on a robe being a sport. :lr

DirecTV is offering the service for four payments of $14.99 compared to the normal rate of four payments of $42.95 for the full season. The prorated discount is nearly 40 percent off the normal price, with DirecTV offering many of the same perks of Center Ice as iN DEMAND.

Apparently due to contractual issues with cable and satellite, the NHL offering it free for this season was never going to happen. At $59.96 for the season, I willl likely keep it.

Wait mens softball? :r:r. Following is all in fun.
I am guessing you play and must take it fairly seriously. I will just say having played baseball through high school. I could definitely smoke a cigar playing mens softball. I have had a few run ins with softball guy at work. If you think slow pitch softball played by men is a sport then golf should qualify. Golf definitely requires more skill then slow pitch softball.

Smoked a Padron 1926 for the season opener. This cigar, that I had for the first time, was truly awesome. One of the best I ever had.

The game, however, was another story. The players were obviously very rusty. Penalties and puck fumbling were omnipresent during the first two periods, and it didn't get much better in the third. Habs lost 2-1 to the Leafs. Only 47 to go.

You can play hockey drunk as hell, and I have, but only after you have gained the ability to skate, puck handle and generally know how to play the game. ALL hockey skills are unnatural...almost all other sports have at least some natural variables, like running(compared to skating) for example. I've helped coach adults that were figure skaters learn to play hockey, they eliminated the variable of not having to learn how to skate...they still can't do anything with the puck. It takes years to be able to comfortably skate while controlling a puck at the end of a 60" long stick. I could go on but blah, blah, blah...That doesn't mean other sports aren't complex but hockey, in the depth of unnatural skills needed to play, is the most physically complex.

Anyway, LET'S GO LIGHTNING!

How many people here also play/coach ice hockey?
