I just got the Galaxy S 3 and this thing is just absolutely amazing. In fact, I posted this entire response with just my voice. You really should go check it out. It seems to me that the new iPhone 5 give you a whole extra row for icons, but the android operating system seems to give you so much more control and functionality.

Based on your riveting and informative review, I'll go put this crappy iPhone 5 up on eBay today. Thank you! I'm so glad you felt compelled to post your recommendation for an android phone in a thread discussing the new iPhone. If you hadn't, I never would have figured out how I've been wrong for so long.

Seeing as though I was responding to Big Bert, who was wondering about the Iphone 5 vs the Galaxy S3, and I was giving him encouragement to check it out before making a decision, your snide and belittling response was rather uncalled for.

Got my phone in yesterday, played with it for about 10 minutes and then the home button is going whacko on me, Siri popping up, pictures randomly taken, voice control turning on and off. Getting it replaced shortly, but for the first 10 minutes of playing with it, this phone is badass. Amazing how LTE is faster than my wifi at home!

I like to call it a "Taller" screen, haha. Does it feel larger? I can't wrap my head around a taller screen without widening it. Taki's should land soon and I intend to break it before making up my mind.

I think it still feels very nice in hand, the screen is "taller" but the overall size of the phone is still comfortable in hand and in the pocket.

Because they decreased the size of the bezel, the screen got larger but the phone is not that much taller. I personally don't even notice the size different that often except on apps that require more scrolling (facebook, mail, safari, twitter), and the only reason I notice it there is because I was used to how much of the content was visible in my iPhone 4. It, so far, has actually been a nice improvement of being able to see more messages, emails, posts, tweets, etc. I was not a fan of increasing the screen size, so though how Apple increased the size of the phone was a good compromise. However, people that want a big screen will still likely not be satisfied if they didn't like the size of the iPhone 4

I had an intersting experience today.

I am due for an upgrade on Nov 20 and stopped by the ATT store to see if there was any flexibility on early upgrade and how long they anticipate stock to be in store.

The ATT store in my area is doing a sales blitz on the new ATT U-Verse home internet and apparantly they are motivated.

I had no intention of subscribing, but the guy explained that if I did, he would order my iPhone 5 TODAY and I should have it in 2-3 weeks.

They didn't hold any payment for the U-Verse and it was in the contract that I can cancel any time before installation with no fee and the phone will still be shipped.

After looking at the fiber optic cable speeds and savings over my bundled Brighthouse package, I may actually go with the U-Verse, but at least have a phone on the way.

I am in sales and extremely skeptical, but went over the contract with a microscope and it was definitely legitimate in the cancellation policy.

floydpink
10-02-2012, 03:17 PM
After a couple hours, I decided to cancel the Uverse but have a confirmation that my phone is processing and will ship in 14-21 days, so I'm not sure how much time I knocked off my Nov 21 upgrade date besides the obvious 30 or so.

If history is a guide, they will be easy to find in stock by then.

Not an intentionally sleazy move, I just want to wait until they bundle cable into the package

$19 adaptor will fix that problem. There probably are a few aftermarket ones available on eBay or amazon that are even cheaper. I agree that Apple shouldn't have done this, but to me it wouldn't deter me from the 5. I am definitely not implying that you are one of these people but alot of the people that are complaining about the new charging/syncing port are just haters who want to bash Apple. I've had the iPhone since the first one, so I have collected a lot of chargers. My question is, how often have you upgraded any cell phone and NOT had to buy new chargers?

Considering pretty much every other smart phone thats been available for years charges off a microUSB cable, only iPhone people are having to buy new chargers... Europe has standardized on micro USB, so I'm curious to see what they say\do about Apple.

Same way they complied with it for the 30-pin connector, they have a lightning/microUSB adapter.

The EU standard has been in place for 2-3 years, and I'd say the trend towards a microUSB standard is around 4-5 years old. The old 30-pin connector, as I think I may have mentioned earlier in this thread, is around 10 years old.

I do not know why Apple didn't chose to switch to microUSB, but the switch to something was going to happen regardless, and people would have needed to buy new chargers either way. A smaller connector was needed to clear up room inside the phone and not make it bigger.

Unless you only need one charger and don't have any accessories like an iHome or something, Then you don't need to buy anything extra.

Gazelle seems to undervalue things by quite a lot, you should almost always be able to get a better price on eBay or Craigslist. I know factory unlocked 16gb iPhone 4's are selling for about $300 in my area.

I need a completely un-biased opinion.
Is it worth it to get the iPhone 5 over the 4s? I mean speed. Is the 4g crazy fast on the 5?

King James
10-15-2012, 07:42 PM
The speed is considerably faster, yes. Whether or not its worth upgrading from a 4S is dependent on other things, though. At least in my opinion.

Dependent on what Sir?

King James
10-15-2012, 07:58 PM
Well I'm sure it can be different for different people. If you are happy with the 4S, if you have an upgrade available, why you need or don't need the speed increase, if you want the bigger screen, etc. I just more meant speed may not be the only thing to consider

BHalbrooks
10-15-2012, 08:14 PM
Yea, I'm only worried about speed really. The bigger screen, etc is all secondary. I want the faster phone is the bottom line.

I had the 4s and did the upgrade since I had it available (bought the 4s off contract on craigslist for $380 this spring). AT&T unlocked it for me and I sold it on craigslist this week for $420. It was the 32GB model though. I think you can get at least $300 for a 16gb and more if yours is 32 or 64gb.

I think it was worth the upgrade, but that's my humble opinion. LTE is so much better than 3g speeds. Things that rarely worked on 3g work like a champ now (Like imessage, the internet, etc.). Additionally, I hit over 30mbps on speedtest.net's app the first week I had it.

I was on a 21 day backorder from ATT for a black 16g iPhone 5 and found a Sam's Club that that had them so I cancelled my order and walked out with one last night. That was nice as I was planning on sometime near November 5 for expected delivery.

I was a little nervous after some of the "scuffgate" talk on the Mac forums but have been extremely impressed going from my 4 to the 5 and haven't had any issues with scratched back or dinged edges out of the box like some are complaining about and looked it over pretty well before paying.

I'll avoid the politics of the conditions in the China factories, but will say I think Apple has their hands full on this release and there are bugs to work out just like every other iPhone release.

I'm already looking at tents and air mattresses for the launch of iPhone 6.

The map app needs some work, but I use Waze for navigation anyway.

I haven't been overly impressed by iOS6 and am thinking an update will be good.

The LTE speeds are blazing fast and I put this in a bumper rather than the Otterbox my other was in, so it seems like such a lighter phone.

The screen might not be like a Galaxy SIII, but I have an iPad when I want a bigger screen and wouldn't trade this phone for anything currently out there, but that's just me.

Ok I need some convincing in getting a 5 over a 4s. I dropped my 4 yesterday and busted up the screen.

I'm leaning towards the 4s in that I have a lot of other devices that have the older 30 pin connector, including a number of charging cables. I keep one in each bag I use for travel. I don't want to have to buy a lot of extra adapters. That's a lot of extra $$$. Also, do the adapters work on an iHome clock radio? Plus, looking on amazon, there's not too many armbands for the 5 that get decent ratings. Since I'd put a Zagg shield on it, most of the armbands with the plastic screen don't work well. At least that's what I found with my 4. Plus it's more money for a new one. I'm also not a heavy data user, so the LTE speeds wouldn't really do much for me.

The reason for a 5 is that it's the latest and greatest. Why already buy something that's old tech? And since I plan to switch to Verizon, the monthly charge would be the same whether I got a 4s or 5.

Go for the 5... My wife has a 4S and she is envious. The 5 is faster, does LTE right, and the larger screen is handy. Yes, there are a few problems ("purple" haze photo shots, camera flash sync) that are supposed to be fixed in the upcoming software update.

For me, when I am buying something I figure that I will get the latest available as the life expectancy is that much longer. I *know* that I can get two years out of my 5, while I am sure that in the next two years there will be IOS features introduced that will work on the 5 but not on the 4S.

I wouldn't let the chargers dissuade you. If you stick with the 4S now, it will not be a savior but a stay of execution. The lightning connector is not going anywhere, so if you are going to stay with Apple, you will have to make the switch at some point. I have a large quantity of 30-pin chargers as well from buying apple products over the course of the 9-10 years the 30-pin was used.

It will be less convenient at first, but you should be able to manage with one adaptor to float around and have an extra charger. I'm doing fine without any adaptors.

Plus, you can always wait for some viable third party lightning cables/adaptors to get on the market (maybe they are there already)

Wife & I both have the older i4 (not the 4s). Apple email says both our new black/slate 64G i5's are on the way. Woot!

My UPS tracking shows they are being shipped directly from China:

Also, do the adapters work on an iHome clock radio?

Bob,
I bought the lightning dock adapter when I ordered some sync cables from Apple.
I have an iHome on my nightstand and prefer to just dock it to charge at night.
If you use any type of case or bumper, the adapter won't work. I received the adapter in the mail yesterday and I ended up modifying my bumper to make it work. I took a dremel to the bumper and made the hole on the bottom larger. Works fine, but the bottom of the bumper looks a little ugly.
I checked to make sure the iPod functions properly, and everything worked just as before. It does make the iPhone sit higher than normal of course. I can snap a pic tonight if you'd like to see what it looks like.

thanks for the feedback. I was planning on a adapter for the iHome since like you, I use it to charge my phone every night. I'm debating the bumper. I haven't used a case on any of my iPhones at this point and not sure I'm going to start.

Going to stop by the Verizon store at lunch and see what they can do for me on a 5.

I'm having trouble finding a lightning adapter for my car charger and am nervous about going with a knockoff until I know how they work.

This whole rollout of the 5 and new accessories has been less than lightning but resistance is futile as they are all going to be using lightning.

FWIW, I put a bumper on my iPhone5 and haven't had any scratches, and am convincing myself that I don't put a rubber case around my expensive watch, so I won't on my phone.

Just buy the USB piece that you can plug your normal charger in. Works for me.

I picked up a 5 Friday afternoon. A friend called to say a local RadioShack had one in stock, on Verizon too. Score! Gotta say this thing is fast. I put the Zagg shield on it, the new one that doesn't smudge. Gives the screen a matte finish. I like it.

I wasn't planning on getting the 5, but now i might. My iphone 4 button is really getting on my nerves. Some days I have to hit it 20 times before it works. I have an upgrade in December, but wasn't going to use it. Guess I need to now.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I had no intentions of upgrading but liking it so far. I'm really impressed with how light it is. The Retina display is really nice too.

I got my i5 around Sept. 25th. I love it. I work in the Middle East and had a company meeting in Dubai. I took some great pics with it. I got a good face shot of me in front of Atlantis Dubai. Then another one of Burj Kalifa(The tallest building in the world). Not one of them turned purple on me. I guess I lucked out. So far I haven't had any problems with it. I love that the mini connector can go in any side. It's so much easier to connect that way. My adapter should be waiting for me at home by now. I had some time with it at home and the LTE is great. I also like the voice txt dictation. The 3D view on the GPS is awesome. My wife wants to upgrade from the 4s now! I had the 3GS so it was about time. When the 4s came out I was not happy that it did not come with LTE so I held out. I have an Incipio case it comes with a silicone cover inside of an aluminum back with plastic sides case. The silicone cover leaves plenty of room for connections IMO....Overall I'm very satisfied with it.

Meh, there's always a rumour that the next gen will be released within month. That rumour is also almost never true, Apple is pretty strict at keeping to their yearly release schedule. The only exception is when they want to reposition or consolidate, such as the iPad4. The only reason they released the 4 with the Mini was to get all the portable iDevices onto the Lightning connector. The odds are 99-1 that the next iPhone will be the 5s and it will be released on the yearly schedule in Sept 2013, not Q1.

Even if they do, I'm sure I'll be ok with my iPhone 5.

Well, I wasn't going to get an iPhone 5, but my contract with Sprint is done now, and I couldn't run away fast enough. Now I have AT&T, and for a $100 difference, I got the iP5 instead of the 4s. I like it. No really big changes from the 4s though, which was expected.

I bought the lifeproof case today for it, and if anyone wants I can write a review, and take some pictures.

So I made the switch from iPhone to Android. I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I was extremely dissapointed with the narrow/tall iPhone5 design so I moved to android for a better sized phone. After using the Note2 for a few days I have come to some early conclusions. The Note2's screen is beautiful and a wonderful viewing size for movies and the internet. Android is incredibly diverse and the posibilities for customization seem endless. I will say this, IOS is more stable, it is much more simple and predictable. But the fun factor is so much better on the Android. So I have determined that Android is more fun, more customizable, better screen size. But it lacks some of the stable, reliableness IOS has. If you want a phone that flat out works, may be kind of boring though, get an iphone. If you want something fun that you can tinker with, go Android, and you may have to deal with an occasional lag or glitch. No phone is perfect... yet.

Exactly Shane. I have the Galaxy S 3, and I'm upgrading to the Note when my Wife joins my Account with AT&T.

Weeze just got me the iphone 5 for my birthday. I'd fully intended to stick with my 4 until it fell apart.
I got her the 5 back when it released, but she uses hers daily at work. She needed more storage space, too. Then we went through all the "need adapters and cords for everything in the world" crap and I just decided not to put myself through it.
I'll have to run to the AT&T store and get it activated so I can begin my adventure.

I am looking forward to using it, I'm always shocked at how nice Lisa's screen looks. I use mine all day and it'll be nice to look at that sexy display. The increased speed will be awesome, and I intend to use Siri until I figure out what it's good for. :D

"Siri I feel like Wendy's for lunch"....

I haven't eaten at wendy's in years and the only one I've seen around me actually closed down 2 years, ago, Siri pulled up 3 fairly close and one only a couple miles away ... needless to say I was lovin' my frosty brand non-dairy dessert beverage!

It's true I did that :P I usually use Siri to remind me when something is on, it's awesome you are watching tv and you see a commercial for something just grab your phone and ..

"Siri remind me to watch Archer at 930 on Thursday..."

(not that i would ever need to be reminded to watch archer, but it's perfect for random shows I really want to catch)
