BAGHDAD – American troops in Iraq will be allowed to drink beer without fear of court-martial for this year's Super Bowl — an exception to a strict military ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones.

In what is sure to be a major morale boost, the top U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. Raymond Odierno issued a waiver Wednesday paving the way for troops to participate in the popular American football tradition.

Super Bowl XLIII will kick off on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Florida, but it will be 2 a.m. in Baghdad when the live broadcast starts in Iraq. Troops will gather in dining halls on military bases nationwide to watch the game.

A copy of the waiver said the consumption of alcoholic beverages will be limited to Feb. 1-2 and service members can only have two, 12-ounce beers each.

Odierno also appeared to acknowledge the sensitivity of drinking alcohol in an Islamic country, particularly considering the game falls during a holy period for Iraq's majority Shiite Muslims.

The waiver orders commanders to "keep in mind all host nation laws and customs regarding alcohol consumption" and "to exercise discretion and good judgment in enforcing these guidelines and restrictions."

U.S. troops have been banned from drinking, possessing or selling alcoholic beverages under a general order that also bans them from possessing ****ography and other activities. They can face a reduction in pay or rank or even a court-martial if they violate the rule.

The Washington Post reported that several service members said the only other time the ban was lifted was in 2005, for troops operating under the Baghdad command.

Drinking alcohol isn't illegal in Iraq but is banned under Islam, and extremists have frequently targeted liquor stores.

The exemption comes as the U.S. military faces stricter Iraqi oversight under a new security agreement that took effect on Jan. 1.

Violence has declined dramatically over the past year, and the Americans are involved in less combat, focusing more on their training and advisory roles.

weather here for the last few days has been anything but good, messes w/TV and INTERNET signals, the temp, the mail system........but NOT the herfing
had a regular Sat night herf and had close to a new record even w/nasty weather..........gave out some cigar caddies, had some new attendees (who heard about us), had a good numbers of smokes thanks to the Bagram Troop Supporters...............will try to load pics later when weather clears

no mail to report today, but I did load up my last 10 5er Cigar Caddies and deliver them to Bruce's old work area (dust off)...it seems they went to a FOB a few days back and troops on the ground ask where the cigars are that they heard gets dropped off when they arrive, off course the pilots didn't have since no-one took over Bruce's spot when he left for the states. I filled them with 5 sticks and a cutter for their next trip out......someone down there now realizes the importance of the "Cigar for the Troops" program.......if you guys back there that use to send to Bruce want me to pick up the slack, I can deliver the items to Dust Off until they have one of their guys on the board to take over, besides Fekum also has flights out to the out lining FOB troops as well.

nets been down the last few days due to weather.............so here is the update

net now working.....got mail from TS Dave's cigar drive a few days back, thanks to all the helped out the BAF Orphans.....& OS Dave's long lost package arrived, thanks Dave but next time make sure they don't mistake the 0 at the beginning of the zip as an O and add it to the AE to make it AEO...but at least it arrived and I believe you know have a new record for snail mail :r

the Sat Herf went well for having snow on the ground and being colder than a well diggers butt..............Sun Herf on the other hand was a bust, everyone had meetings to attend instead of herfing, stayed till 35 min after start time and no-one arrived so I packed up and left the AO

howdy all, Saturday afternoon here with only a few hours left till BAF CIGAR CLUBs weekly cigar night........weather is getting warmer so we should be seeing more attend (you know the fair weather smokers).........hope all is well, 3 months to go (last week in June) till I'm back on AMERICAN soil:usa
