I have been doing a thread on each humidor as I go... but, that is getting to be too confusing... so, I think I'll just keep this one thread going and post updates as I go... Will be easier for me to manage....

I just oiled this bunch up today.... the oil has to dry about 3 days... so, in the mean time, I'll work on dressing out the interiors...

First up... Maple with a heavy mineral stain streak & Walnut...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH51/WMWH51-Oiled.jpg

Next.... Curly Maple & Walnut

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH52/WMWH52-Oiled.jpg

Ambrosia Maple & Quilted Maple.... That lid is hypnotizing...

Wormy American Chestnut & Walnut...

Here's another Wormy Chestnut & Walnut.... This one has an engraving on the inside of the lid.

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH45/WMWH45-InsideLid.jpg

And these two.... are a little bit behind... I just need to add splines, cut the lids off and sand...sand....sand... but, it won't take long to get 'em caught up to the others...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH49/WMWH49-55.jpg

And.... because I'm spending so much time in the in the shop... I'm building this little jewelry box on the side for my girl...

Bird's Eye Maple & Wenge.... :-)

Very pretty! How do you accomplish the engraving?

Laser I am sure. In college I got to play around with a laser engraver in my free time.

It's done with a laser...yes. The laser can do pretty much any image that is digitized.....

I've got the angles figured out.... have it all drawn up and have been waiting for somebody to want one.... Ready when you are.... :xxx

The drawing is a bit short....but, it is the angles that count...

Finally, I am able to start finishing up these two little boxes.....

First up is the Curly Maple & Purple Heart... She's 10.25"x8.75"x5" for right around 60 count....
All I have to do is line her and let the freshly applied oil dry a couple days and then buff her out....

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH49/WMWH49.jpg

Next is the "sister" humidor.... she's Curly Maple & Cherry... 10.25"x8.75"x6.5" and good for around 80 count.....

This one is still unspoken for.... I've added a lid stay to her and will dress her out as requested to whomever wants to secure her....

Just like the other one, she only needs to be lined and the fresh oil needs to dry and then wax & buff.... should be ready to go in a day or two...

Last night I did a little bit more "detailed" work on the Wyoming humidor.... My customer wanted his family brands to really stand out on the lid.... Although the laser engraving did a great job, and layed down ground work... it just didn't quite give it the desired effect against the walnut....

So.... after kicking it around in my head for a couple of days on how to "fix it"... I came up with this.... Here's a before & after pic....

OK - So now, I can call it done.....

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH54/DSC00133.jpg

Next.... WMWH56 - Walnut & Cocobolo. 11x9x6 for a tight little 85 count humidor.... with some pizazz...

Next...WMWH59 - Ziricote & Gabon Ebony.... This is this run's Extra... We'll call it the Waxing Moon "choice"... as this one is not special ordered and will be available for the open market.... I plan on trying a couple of new things to the styling on this one.... Should be interesting.... 16x12x8 for a 220 count

Lastly.... WMWH62 - Jataboa (aka Brazilian Cherry). Last minute - able to fill order because I had the wood in house.... 16x12x7 for 190 count...

Today is a heavy sawdust day..... Time for some humidors to meet their makers!!!

Although we still have a little tweeking to do on #52 & #48 and a set of trays..... We should have them done by the close of the weekend....

First up - WMWH53..... Figured Cherry & Walnut. We are going to try to squeeze out a 19x12x8.5, 277 count humidor from what you see below. This cherry is amazing.... Highly figured - should prove to be an interesting piece.

First off, we had to tame the "live edge" of that slab of cocobolo.... Here's a picture of my partner Bruce.... getting a straight edge from that slab....

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/Taming.jpg

Here's the straight edge, which allows us to put it up against the table saw fence now...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/Tamed.jpg

I'm going to keep that live edge around and use it on a lid for a future humidor.....

And.... here's the progress so far today.... Still daylight to burn...

WMWH59 - Ziricote & Gabon Ebony..... This one is coming along as well... I plan on doing some cool stuff to the base molding and the lid is going to have a completely different style..... This one will be interesting....

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/wmwh59/WMWH59-1.jpg

WMWH62 - Jataboa or Brazilian Cherry..... this one is coming along as well... Have to get the others caught up before we do much more with this one.... Didn't do much with the lid pieces on this one either...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH62/wmwh62-1.jpg

So far... so good... I think have some nice lookers coming out of this batch!

Thanks for watching everybody!!!

We sure have made a lot of sawdust over the last couple of days.... I think we wore out a blade or two as well... some pretty hard wood getting cut up here.....

Three of lids will be laminated with contrasting stripes.... and four of the humidors will have a lid separator... which, (with any luck), we'll be cutting the lid off at the laminated 1/4" piece.... leaving 1/16th inch on each side of the cut... 1/8" appearance when the lid is closed.... of contrasting wood..

Here we go....

WMWH53 - Cherry & Walnut.... This one will have a glass lid. I put that other humidor in the picture to give you an idea of how cherry darkens up over time.... And... that humi has only been around about a week or two...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH53/wmwh53-1.jpg

WMWH54 - Walnut... We just worked the box portion of this one... as you can see, the lid parts still need to be planed down...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH54/wmwh54-1.jpg

WMWH56 - Walnut & Cocobolo... This is a great combination.... Again, haven't worked too much on the lid parts... except cut all the laminates for the laminated lid detail...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/WMWH56/wmwh56-1.jpg

WMWH57 - Quilted Maple & Cocoblo.... This one is going to be HUGE. Big Cocobolo base molding.... and then a cocobolo band separating the book matched top & bottom.... not to mention the lid.... We're going to have fun with this one....

I would LOVE to find a way to build one out of American Red Cedar. The problem with that is the aromatic cedar would surely ruin a cigar. I may experiment with some ways to seal the cedar before applying the interior Spanish Cedar. It's an iffy idea, at best. But American Red Cedar is some of the prettiest wood around.

Have you busted the myth and built a useable model out of Red Cedar yet?

If you seal the interior with shellac - it should be fine.... as long as your inner spanish cedar lining is tight..... I don't see where it would be an issue....

I spent most of the day today playing around with Spanish Cedar... The owner of #52 requested that I install an Accumonitor EZ in the cavernous space.... and I had the thing all but done.... but, I simply didn't like it. There were too many wires exposed and that big black tank sitting in the corner... I well..... started over.....

Here's what I came up with. It will allow for ventilation with the cuts between the top portion and the lower portion.... and the top portion is offset 1/8" to securely sit on top... the gaps below are 5/8" deep by 1/2" wide with a 1/4" between them... so, the water reservoir should have plenty of breathing room to do it's thing... Plus, the top lifts off for easy maintenance, etc...

Now, I think I am just going to build 4 stackable trays on each side and call it a day with this bad boy.... and then send her on it's long journey to London....

I should have it done...done...done tomorrow, or wednesday...with the final waxing and all... But, man... I'm glad this is done. What do ya'all think?

Busy day in the shop over the last couple of days. I didn't get much done during the working week.... things were kind of nuts at my "real job"... Man, I'd sure like to be able to give it up and do this 100%.... We'll see how things go...

I worked on the lids....and pretty much have them ready to bevel. But, first, I need to get the spline work done... that shouldn't be too bad.

I did the tray work on Bop's humidor #52.... I decided to rework the encasement for the accumonitor.... toying with those "waffle" looking things I made up out of SC.... I kind of like that... Might have to do my trays that way too... not sure yet...

Also, I finally finished up a cabinet insert I am doing for another BOTL…. Just need to get some drawer pulls.. Covered the drawers with Ambrosia Maple

Sorry.... I haven't had time to do the picture thing.... I've been busy with work & all the spare time I have has been making sawdust.... So, I thought I'd show where everything is at the moment... We'll see what the weekend brings.... At least they're starting to look like something....

I did all the spline work, sanded...sanded....and sanded some more... beveled the lids and then cut off the tops. Next up... Mill the mortises for the lid stays. Then, it's spanish cedar time!!!

Things have been a little hectic lately in the Waxing Moon shop.... My day job has really been getting in the way. I'm seriously thinking about giving it up and focusing on the humidors - Full Time. But, as you can guess.... the decision is a bit nerve wracking.... Time will tell.

I haven't even had time to get in to the computer to update the progress... but, I will be having Six humidors coming off the bench over the weekend... and then I get to start up on six more. The upcoming six will be a variety of some very cool wood and designs...

In the mean time.... I finally got Bobmachine's humidor finished and in the mail on Monday... she's on her way to London England..... My girl made me redesign the bottom portion of the accumonitor thing.... she's my lifesaver and best critic... she gives me great ideas. Set me back just a tad.

My first piece to wind up in Europe! How cool is that! Here she is.... snapped the pics the other night, right before she went in to the heavily padded box!

Or, just let the customer pick at the time of ordering. Some people might want the slats running the same direction as the cigars to allow them to be stacked more easily without rolling. :2

Ah, but sticks come in different RGs and the chances of the cigars lining up with the spaces between the slats such that they don't roll would be pretty slim. However, a choice would be ideal. :2
I do like the increased air flow between the tray and the main compartment, though! :tu

It's been busy in the Waxing Moon shop..... I have all sorts of nice exotics to play around with.... Most of the work I've been doing has been simply dimensioning and planing the wood down to the specifications.....

Currently in the shop.... Quilted Maple, Macassar Ebony, Gabon Ebony, Wenge, Goncalo Alves, Teak, Walnut, Figured Cherry.... and probably a couple more that I can't remember....

I know, it's probably boring to look at a chunk of rough cut wood, so, I'll wait and post as they start to look like something....

With that being said... Here's some progress on a couple of them...

WMWH58 - Mahogany & Wenge. This piece of mahogany is old growth... Just can't find it like this anymore. My wood supplier told me that this board was there when he started working there 30 years ago. Anymore, with all the harvesting and orchard type growth... you just don't see it like this anymore. Take a look at that fantastic ribbon effect, it's really going to pop when she gets to the finishing stage.... This humidor is bound for Tokyo!

Thinking about putting out a "down & dirty" humidor with a great seal.... Modelled after the all too familiar foot locker.... Build it, line it... and trim it out.... What do ya'all think?

Pretty good couple of days in the shop.... wish I could have had more time, but.... still enjoyed every minute of it....

I'll start out with Matador's.... I know he's been waiting. I have the lid put together and she's lined... still have to do the hinge work and stuff... and build out the trays... and Sand, Sand Sand.... I can't wait to oil up that quilted maple.... as it will really pop!

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/BG1210/DSC00581.jpg

Next up is a sweet Figured Cherry & Walnut.... glass top. She's a humidor as well. Just gotta do the interior trays and clean her up and she'll be out the door...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/BG1210/DSC00583.jpg

Zebrawood & Walnut..... I have the glass - ready to install.... she's lined and almost ready... I'll get the glass put in tomorrow...

It's been pretty busy down in the shop... there is a lot more to show than what I am showing here.... I should have a few humidors coming off the bench over the weekend.... and I will make sure I have time to take some good pictures....

Here's a couple pictures that I took last night... I just ran out of time to get pictures of some of the other stuff.....

Zebrawood & Walnut.... just about ready. Need to oil her up and polish... clean her up and she'll be out the door....

I lined the Ebony.... just need to do some tray work and sand...sand...sand.. oil & polish...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/BG1210/DSC00601.jpg

And then there's the vino trays....` or, I guess I should say Edgestar...

That set up was $136.64 plus shipping.....

Other options would be hardwood fronts, etc..... that would add too it...

WaxingMoon
01-07-2011, 11:06 AM
Yes - I'm taking requests.... I've partnered up with a fellow here in Charleston and he will be, for the most part, the drawer/tray guy....
His name is Jay and has 20+ years interior trim carpentry in the area and is bringing a lot of good things to my shop... knowledge & tools.... :D

We do not have all the specs on the various units - but hope to get a library to refer to..... so, it will take a little bit of back & forth to get ironed out what you need - but, we're going to try to tackle this monster....

Anybody purchasing a new unit.... feel free to drop ship it to my shop and we'll "square it away" for you....and then send it on your way...

I am still going to focus on the humidors.... Jay, will be "the spanish cedar guy"...

01-07-2011, 11:17 AM
Please let me know what you need from me. Do I need to get Jay measurements, or will he go to the Vinotemp website?

Do I need to contact him directly and if so how? Let me know what you need and I will get it to you guys.

I had a request to build a humidor for the Commanding General of tghe US Africa Command.... sort of put under the gun on this one - has to be in Washington DC by Wednesday to catch a ride to Africa.... The General is retiring on March 7th.... The wood is all African Wood... Sapele is the dark wood & Movingui is the lighter wood.... I will be putting ebony splines in there tomorrow and pretty much finish her up.... It's kind of cool, I get to put a pin on my map for Africa now.... Got all the continents except Australia & Antartica... Watch Out Tashaz.....!!!

That Lacewood is something else. How rare is it and how stable is it? What I mean is in small chunks will it move or crack at all like say snake wood? After seeing this something tells me I am going to be calling up my cue making and having him make me something heavy with the Lacewood.

So my wife told me I am getting a Humidor from Ed. I had to send the money in, but I have no idea what the humidor will look like or what will be done for me.

I can not wait to get the shipment and open my custom humidor from WaxingMoon. I now have my first heirloom to pass down to my kids.

Not real sure yet what I'm going to marry this stuff up with, but I'm sure I'll be making humidors with it.... I got a treat from my wood vendor today... I just have to show ya'all....

All of the pieces are old growth.... Richard at Carlton McLendon's Rare Woods & Veneers told me that they have been in his inventory since Carlton was around.... in other words, at least 30 years.

First up.... Muvingui or African Satinwood... This is my personal favorite of the bunch... I can't wait to get this one shined up.... You don't see boards like this anymore.... they get turned in to veneer...

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/DSC00860.jpg

Next up.... Some Eucolyptus.... this board actually came from Austrailia.... and is at least 30 years old. Ought to make an interesting box!

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/DSC00863.jpg

Last but not least... A very nice piece of Macassar Ebony.... again, old growth and has been in his shop for at least 30 years....

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn88/evsallee/DSC00866.jpg

I can't wait to start cutting on this stuff!

Back with a few more.....

Brazilian Cherry & Ebony
18" x 14" x 10"
360 Count.....

I like the tray set up the Brother asked for.... 1" deep full trays, 1-1/2" shorter than the hole they fit in.... so he can slide 'em back & forth just a bit and pull them out easily.... Plenty of room below for some serious storage...
